On The 12 Days of Christmas, BlackSapphicGuide Gave To Me..
A full list of winter holiday movies! (With black sapphics in them)
12. Silent Night
This movie is the first in our list because, it is Christmas themed (sort of), and it does have a black sapphic character (Alex) in a relationship. It isn't your typical Christmas movie and the sapphic couple is nauseatingly toxic (well, more so from the other's side) but I guess it's refreshing, even if stomach turning, to see a different dynamic between sapphics beyond the super healthy, super loved up couplings. For the little screen time Alex had, they sure seemed to treat her very nastily. The movie itself is very interesting and I enjoyed it throughout the confusion, but its strength as a contender in our list is very weak.
Tumblr media
11. A Christmas In New York
This movie is low on our list because while it's cute to see a married black lesbian couple particularly in a Christmas movie, their story unfortunately had less screen time. They argued for most of the movie (which all couples did, but at least others had intimate scenes showcasing their connection to balance it out, and the fact that they were married should have counted for something more, right!?). The acting was a bit awkward sometimes overall and the movie was a solid average watch, but hey, black married lesbians who make up in the end and don't die? We'll take it.
Tumblr media
10. Coming Home for Christmas
This movie was midpoint on our list solely for the reasons of the transphobia and disbelief in straight love shown by one of the main characters. Beyond that (and the slightly cringe acting in some scenes), this movie is a beautiful display of intentionally made family and togetherness throughout differences. It was lovely seeing a movie centered around a queer led household as well as the conversation of adoption so present. Though this film isn't the best quality, it has lots of heart and potential. This indie movie was brought to life by Onyx Keesha and B. Danielle Watkins.
Tumblr media
9. Mixed Christmas
A hilarious movie based on the premise of a double-booked AirBnB, this Christmas tale was an enjoyable watch. Filled with an all-black cast, and a nearly all-queer cast at that, it felt right at home in this list. Navigating an engagement, and a college crush, the main storyline took a crazy situation and made it funny and entertaining. One plot among the gay cousins and friends of the main cast had me side-eyeing, and seeing as the groomed character left the relationship, all that left was a sour taste in my mouth. Throughout the face-offs, the pining and the jealousy, the crew finally put aside their differences, faced their own truths and desires in a grand conclusion of love in the holidays. This is another Christmas movie made by Onyx Keesha and B. Danielle Watkins, who I think are two icons in the world of black sapphic indie movie, this is one movie that fits right into this list.
Tumblr media
8. Christmas With You
A rather fun movie, this film starts off with a very uncomfortable truth - that Kelsey was being cheated on while she planned to propose to her girlfriend. Hurt, and with the timely excuse of her father's passing, she escapes back to her hometown. There she reconnects with her mother, her high school friends and even her high school crush. Throughout the pain, and manipulation, Kelsey finally choose a new love to build with her high school crush who liked her back. A cute and cozy independent film, this had to make an appearance on our list.
Tumblr media
7. Every Time A Bell Rings
A Hallmark movie has a 3-ingredient recipe: small-town charm, a coffee-shop or ranch, and holiday magic - and this movie fell right in line. Following 3 adopted sisters, we see them spend time together in remembrance of their deceased father and the Christmas traditions he did with them. Unfortunately, the sapphic romance has little screen time in comparison to the other 2 (though in fairness, it was fairly new), but it was still very cute. If you love yourself a Hallmark movie, be sure to check this one out!
Tumblr media
6. Last ExMas
It's always wonderful to see new films pop up with a sapphic leading couple, and for it to be Christmas themed, Canadian produced and have that quality aligned with that of bigger production companies. Last ExMas feels fresh but it does have classic elements like small town, high school romance, a snarky one-liner best friend who encourages the second chance at love, and one character escaping to LA and having a relationship with an artistic celeb. What's relatively new is our main character has a love triangle of sorts, but she also was embarrassed of her high school girlfriend, not because the town was homophobic, but because she was not cool enough for her friends. A cute and cozy watch, this movie had to make it relatively high on our list.
Tumblr media
& now, our 5 golden ring recommendations!
5. Something From Tiffany's
This cute movie shows the messy intertwining of two couples and a mix-up that had crazy consequences. Our gorgeous resident black lesbian couple was personally the spotlight for me (along with the lead's daughter), as those two had the snarky, married banter down! Even though, for the purposes of this list, this movie did not center the black sapphic couple (who were mad adorable the entire movie!) it was still an adorable watch that definitely got me in the holiday mood! I'll urge anyone to watch this. The dynamic alone between our resident couple was enough to place this movie very high on our list!
Tumblr media
4. Under the Christmas Tree
This made history as the first lesbian Christmas Lifetime movie and for such a feat, it brought a really cute holiday movie. One that incorporates the basic ingredients of a family friendly Christmas watch, this movie really sets the cozy, cute and flirty mood. Charlie had such a unique job so it was interesting to see where that plotline led. By the end, I was smiling really hard because finally, here was a cheesy, Hallmark-level Christmas movie for all to enjoy. This made it high on our list as it’s an easy watch, of good production quality, features a lesbian romance and it’s something appropriate for the whole family to watch together.
Tumblr media
3. The Christmas Clapback
I definitely see myself watching this movie yearly now as this incorporates so many lovely things that make a movie great. From the family dynamics, to the varying love storylines among the co-starring sisters, this movie has something for everyone. I especially enjoyed the budding romance between our resident black sapphic couple, Tisha and Aaliyah (in my head they're both lesbians). We all love a good ol' competition, and this one was no different with its testament of love, family and community. Highly recommend.
Tumblr media
2. A New York Christmas Wedding
Putting aside the weirdness of certain plot points, and the slightly awkward acting, I really enjoyed this movie. It has struggle, it has choice, religious elements, regret, family and most importantly, it has a wedding! An afro-latina bisexual lead on a movie like this was very important in many ways, and I adored how all aspects of her identity (both racial and sexuality) were incorporated into this.
Tumblr media
1. The Christmas Lottery
A heartfelt story which captivated me from start to finish with a black family at the forefront? One which isn't homophobic? Or toxic? (I put that question mark there because they clearly have some issues with vegans?) A solid plot line and pacing? Every actor in this movie was solid and this movie had me shedding a small tear at the end for familial reconnection and the power of love. Diedre and Belinda are a gorgeous couple, and by the end, I was sobbing and wishing I had what they had. And damn, these sisters can sing! As the number one spot, I think this is a must watch annual film.
Tumblr media
And that's all for now folks! Thanks for sticking around to read this! I hope you enjoyed all, or at the very least, one movie on this list this holiday season.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

Photographer Research Post 2
In her series Amalgamations, Kat Moser presents ethereal photographs that intertwine the female form with elements of nature, evoking a sense of timelessness and connection to the human and natural world. Her pictures are created through a unique process of layering two or more images, blending a foundational photograph of the female form with landscapes or textures from various natural settings which allows for a beautiful and mysterious blend of colors and textures that enhance both images.
Tumblr media
This often includes contrasts between luminous bodies of water or rugged terrains, such as rocky coastlines and weathered stone walls from rural chapels in France. Each piece within Amalgamations takes on a painterly, almost ethereal quality due to Moser’s use of a converted infrared camera, which imparts a dreamlike aura to her work. This technique encourages her to play around with themes of mythology and legends, capturing the strength and beauty of her subjects as integrated elements of the environment. Whether hazy and vague or sharp and undeniable, Moser aims to show the beauty of Mother Earth and the human form through her lens.
Tumblr media
Moser's influences stem from several wonderful photographers including, Clarence John Laughlin, Deborah Turbeville, Sarah Moon, and Duane Michals. Additionally, she has refined her skills under the guidance of Joyce Tenneson, Doug Beasley, Elizabeth Opalenik, and Connie Imboden. With studios in Omaha, Nebraska, and Snow Mass, Colorado, Moser travels extensively, bringing landscapes from across the United States and abroad into her work, which has been widely exhibited and is held in private and corporate collections. Her photographs serve not only as visual art but as windows to “special places just beyond the shadows,” inviting viewers to ponder the deep, unseen worlds that link humanity to the mysteries of nature and the feminine form.
Tumblr media
What attracts me to her pieces are those same dreamlike and hazy qualities that make her images feel unreal as well as the technique of layering her images over one another to bring out not only the forms of both images but the colors as well. I could not help but be reminded of Aphrodite and the bird of venus specifically seeing the images of the women layers over water. Additionally, I have always also found the quality of water be be significant to me spiritually and emotionally which is another reason why this photographer stood out to me. There are honestly no words to describe just how beautiful and emotional these works feel to me. There is currently no information regarding the size she prefers to work in he does seem to post often on her Facebook. I would highly recommend anyone curious to take a thorough deep dive into her work.

hi everyone !! my name is reed, chaotic energy queen, owner of a single braincell (only 33% of the time), and 1/2 of the admin team at covingtonhqs. i live in the est timezone, use they & she pronouns (pls alternate these as much as u can, thank u mwah), am 19 years old, and a hot mess disaster. however, you’re not here to hear about me, you’re here to read all about my daughter, michal. so, without further delay, click the read more to learn all about the one, the only, michal glickman.
Tumblr media
name: michal glickman gender & pronouns: cis female, she & hers age: 21 major & year: environmental studies major with a dual concentration in toxic plants and environmental advocacy, fourth year faceclaim: diana silvers occupation: floral apprentice at foxglove florists
everyone has a moment where they first find the place that they belong, michal’s just happened to be in the middle of bum fuck nowhere
bresheit––in the beginning
born michal אביבה glickman (pronounced michal aviva glickman) at 6:00am on april 22nd, 1998 to two loving parents; rabbi adam עקבא (akiva) glickman and deborah ברכה (bracha) glickman nee goldstein esq
name meanings time !
michal: biblical michal was king saul's daughter and first wife of david. in the biblical narrative, michal chooses the welfare of david over the wishes of her father. when saul's messengers search for david in order to kill him,  michal sends them away while pretending she is ill and laid up in bed. she lets david down through a window and hides teraphim in his bed as a ruse. although she risked her life in helping him, after he leaves the court, he makes no attempt to contact her. after michal was returned to david, she criticized him for dancing in an undignified manner, as he brought the ark of the covenant to the newly captured jerusalem in a religious procession. for this she is punished, according to samuel, with not having children until the day she dies.
אביבה (aviva): a modern hebrew name meaning "springtime". it is related to the name of the israeli city tel aviv, as well as to the jewish holiday passover which occurs in the month of nisan, previously called aviv.
glickman: the name glickman is a proud symbol of ancient jewish culture. it is taken from the yiddish word glik, which means luck.
more about her parents !
michal’s dad works as hemlock’s one and only resident conservative rabbi at temple shir shalom, located about a fifteen minute walk from the glickman family home. (i define conservative judaism as a happy medium between reform ~laid back judaism~ and orthodox StRiCt judaism, a conservative jew would probably punch me for saying that).
michal’s mom works as a corporate lawyer at some ugly mean bank that hates the environment and we don’t stan at all
they didn’t meet on j date but they met via j date’s predecessor, their grandmothers being best friends
the past !
the glickmans have been a member of high society in hemlock since their matriarch, michal’s great grandmother hadassah, came over during the holocaust. she immigrated easily, fitting right in with the crowd. an avid follower of practical kabbalah, a jewish mystic tradition concerning the use of magic, her uniqueness made her quite the popular person, and people began to pay large sums of money for her to interpret their dreams and read their palms.
hadassah was the last follower of kabbalah in her line, and her son cut off ties to the mystic tradition as soon as he was able to choose his own religious practices.
still the past but less far in the past !
michal’s upbringing was pretty standard for a white rich kid in a white rich town. she was brought to parties and events she didn’t want to go to, forced to wear cute dresses and shoes and things that she felt weird wearing. she wanted to run around outside, she didn’t want to eat gross appetizers at boring events and pretend like she wanted to be there.
as the years she spent on this earth grew, so did the amount of donor events and fundraising efforts and pairs of fancy shoes she owned. despite her expressing to her parents multiple times that this was not who she was, that these were not things she wanted to go to, they refused to listen to her and continued to drag her to the events against her will.
while they took care of her financially, they didn’t take care of her spiritually. she has a weird complicated relationship with her childhood, as it could have been so much worse, and in the grand scheme of things she was so lucky, but there were so many things she wished she could have done like go hiking and play basketball and be allowed to be herself, and missing out on that has really stopped her from letting her true self shine through, even now.
the label !
now, you may be asking yourself, “reed, how on earth does michal fit this label?” well, let me tell you!
when i hear high heels, i think of an old pair of dress shoes that you probably should’ve gotten rid of a while ago. they’re scuffed, a bit too small for you, and have lost the majority of their shine. michal is trapped in this idea of what her parents want her to be, and while she still squeezes into those high heels for important holidays and events that she is still forced to go to, it’s something that she does begrudgingly, and because she doesn’t want to start conflict.
vayikra––and he called
on a retreat to charles mound, the highest point in illinois, during her sophomore year of high school, michal experienced what it was like to feel the presence of god. she took her shoes off, laid down in the grass, and closed her eyes. it was the first moment she was certain of anything
ever since then, michal’s point of view on spirituality and religion has changed drastically, and she has become much more in touch with the world around her. she practices her judaism through gardening, leading environmental protests (sometimes against her mother’s company, she’s got no clue how she’s managed to avoid getting caught for that), and going on lots of hikes and adventures
it was a moment of clarity for her, her first opportunity to really be who she wanted to and needed to be
bamidbar––in the wilderness
so now, she’s stuck. she knows exactly what she wants to do and who she wants to be, yet is afraid of coming clean to her parents, who currently think she is studying economics on a pre-law track.
she has this kind of double life that she leads, she’s one person at school and another person at home, and as much as she hates it, she fears being cut off from her parents if she refuses to do what they ask of her
headcannons
taurus sun, pisces moon, taurus rising
she was born on earth day in case that was lost on u adjshjkfdhgfd
wants to be a park ranger when she grows up
very socially awkward and bad @ most human interactions, but is also super witty once u get to know her
hasn’t been single/not actively pursuing a or being pursued for a romantic relationship since she was six
falls in love extremely easily, leads to her getting her heart broken a lot
bisexual (prefers women & nb individuals, probably like a 4.5 on the kinsey scale)
while she has had a lot of romantic relationships, real friendships are harder for her to make, and finding one that sticks and makes her feel comfortable is something that is so sacred and special for her that she cherishes it
really looks up to melanie, the connections she makes with people, and how confident she is in the person that she is
smokes a lot of weed
extremely anti-shoe, if she could never wear shoes, that is what she would do, but bc she has to wear shoes sometimes she wears tevas and birkenstocks most of the time
has a huge passion for learning and gaining knowledge, would probably have seventeen minors if she could
she wants to visit every national park by the time she turns 30
michal has a catfish named dog!! it’s a hebrew joke bc in hebrew, dog means fish.
wanted connections
exes ! all of the exes ! ending on good terms, ending on bad terms, first love, losing their virginity to each other, right person wrong time, something that was never quite a relationship
friends ! pals ! amigos ! comrades !
other things i FORGOT TO FINISH AND RAN OUT TIME FOR THIS PLS PLOT W/ ME THANK U

Exhibition at Scottish National Portrait Gallery Francesca Woodman Review
Francesca Woodman started photography at the early age of 13 when her father gave her a camera for her birthday.  Woodman grew up in a household of art, her father painted and her mother was into pottery.  Between 1973 and 1979, Woodman studied at Rhode Island School of Design whilst there she was awarded a scholarship to go to Rome.  Woodman was fascinated by photographers Duane Michals and Deborah Turbeville.  In 1978, Woodman presented her first exhibition in Rome.  Woodman rarely photographed men but more so women.  The woman she photographed the most was herself, naked, jumping and creeping about Infront of the camera like a performance artist (Friedewald 2018). Included in these photos were props such as furniture, animals clothing, all of which were used to produce a atmospheric image.  In 1981 at the age of 22, Francesca Woodman took her own life, leaving over 800 photographs and thousands of negatives.  Why did Francesca Woodman take pictures of herself? “it’s a matter of convenience, I’m always available” (https://www.tate.org.uk).
Tumblr media
This style of photography is portrait in nature and is of course a self portrait of Woodman.  The use of window light works well and is effective showing enough light but also shadows in which create an atmosphere to the image.  It looks as though the sun light coming from outside is harsh however the doors acts as a diffuser without which more harsh light would invade the room thus casting shadows.  As mentioned above the subject is that of Francessca Woodman herself lying under a door.  The door has been carefully placed at such an angle that the viewer would be tricked into thinking that the subject is trapped under a fallen door.  The room is bare much like the subject but with a door partially covering her body.  Everything in this image is in clear focus suggesting that this shot was taken with a deep depth of field.  Although the main focus of the image is the fallen door and semi naked body under the door, your eyes fall on other areas of the picture such as the light coming in through the window, the main window and the floor.  Having said that the composition of the image is good as you are immediately drawn to the middle of the image which is dark surrounded by light, which then highlight the door and the semi naked body.  This then is a strong image.  This image is quite dramatic and sad in nature, the fact that the door is imposing on the body and the fact the body is naked implies a vulnerability to the scene.
Tumblr media
This image is different from the one previously reviewed. This is one of the many images that Woodman darts about in a empty room.  By achieving the blurred movement effect, a ling exposure would have been used. Her camera would have been on a tripod not just because she is the one in the shot but because of the slow shutter speed.  I understand that the blur effect is what she is after however the camera being on a tripod will eliminate camera shake.  Again as with the image above, this is a self portrait, this time however, Woodman has clothes on and there is nothing hiding her other than the fact that she is blurred apart from her feet, which is quite interesting.  The use of natural light coming in through the window works well and produces a dramatic effect.  Having looked at more of Woodman’s images and without stating the obvious, the dramatic, mysterious and vulnerable effects are what she is aiming for and is done so well by the use  of harsh natural light and the rooms she uses.   This image depicts Woodman in motion and is facing the window which is just noticeable and no more.  As mentioned previously, Woodmans feet are in clear focus and again are facing the window suggesting that she is running towards the window as if to jump from it. I find this shot to be quite clever in that the body and face are blurred and the feet are in clear focus. The rest of the picture has no distraction; blank walls, clear floor.  With the walls being white and the dark skirting board followed by the grey looking floor, this helps the focus of attention remain on Woodman as she is in black. This image works for me as there is a haunting feel to it, this woman was haunted, possibly with her own thoughts which could be distorted like the image of Woodman herself.  Although this image comes across as disturbed, it is also vulnerable, similar to the first image reviewed.  Again another strong image

Reverend Jake Woodyard Boggs, Jr. passed peacefully at age 97 early in the evening of Monday, January 10, 2022. Jake was blessed with good health and lived on his own in Mink Shoals (with some assistance in the last few years) after the passing of the love of his life, Betty Rae (White) Boggs, on January 24, 2016. He got the most out of his life and earthly body. He loved working outside, tending to his yard, building fences, and growing flowers. He cut his yard with a push mower until he was past 95 years, and he also drove until that same age when his children deemed it unsafe and took his keys (at great personal peril). The highlight of Jake's week was attending Emmanuel Baptist Church on the West Side, where he had held revivals, served as an interim Pastor, and was a member for over 50 years. His funeral service will be at Emmanuel Baptist Church at Noon on Saturday, January 22, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. His body will be laid to rest beside that of his beloved Betty Rae, to whom he was married for over 65years, at the White family cemetery in Clendenin.
Jake was born to Jake Woodyard Boggs, Sr. and Ruby Oressa (Paisley) Boggs on May 9, 1924, in the town of Gassaway, West Virginia. He had one sister, Marian Boggs Smithers of Belle, who preceded him in death. Jake's family moved from Gassaway when he was a young boy, and he grew up in Belle where his father worked as a machinist for Dupont. His mother worked for many years in the women's coats department of Stone & Thomas. After attending schools in Belle, and with the help of local businessman R. M. Maxwell (founder of the People's Store, later Stone & Thomas, and also of the Bible Center Church), Jake attended the Prairie High School Academy and then Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada where he studied for six years. Following graduation, Jake continued his education at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, for four years. He married his wife Betty on November 23,1950, his senior year at Bob Jones. In his early twenties, Jake held revival meetings throughout West Virginia using an old piano and a collapsible meeting tent. He also had a Christian Radio Broadcast in Charleston and published a monthly paper called Christian Conquest. Betty worked as a surgical nurse at Charleston Memorial Hospital until Jake could grow his ministry. By the 1960s, he held revival meetings throughout the United States.
In the late 1960s, Jake started a travel business organizing and directing tours. He began with tours to the Holy Land, which was his favorite destination. He visited Israel and the greater Middle East 48 times. Jake also directed groups of travelers to the Soviet Union as early as 1970, and to China, Japan, India, Africa, Haiti, Hawaii, the South Pacific, and all throughout Europe. Jake still considered his most important work the revival meetings he held throughout America, and he had great joy in the more than 20,000 people who committed their lives to Jesus Christ in these meetings. Jake admired Dr. Billy Graham and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He met Billy Graham several times, and Billy joked with Jake that they had been successful because they both had been expelled from Bob Jones University (Jake for missing chapel services his senior year because he was spending too much time with his new wife). Jake heard Dr. King speak at an American Baptist convention in the early 1960s and was so impressed that he tracked him down and had a private conversation with Dr. King and his wife, Coretta, at a restaurant near the convention site. He considered Dr. King's assassination to be one of the great tragedies of American history.
Jake is survived by his two children, Deborah Faith (Boggs) VanderWoude of Bradenton, FL, and Jonathan David Boggs of Charleston, along with his four grandchildren: Michal Anne VanderWoude of Sarasota, FL; Marlin Boggs, married to Kathryn, of Arlington, VA; Garrett Boggs of Huntington; and Winsor Boggs, married to Abby, of Vancouver, Canada.

Deborah Sampson
Tumblr media
This is Deborah Sampson. Deborah Sampson is a really amazing woman. She lived during the Revolutionary War and dressed as a man to fight for her country. I included her in this project because I wanted to give an example of a woman who broke the gender rules of her time. She majorly broke the gender rules of her decade and generation. Deborah Sampson successfully dressed as a man and fought in the war for two years. She was only discovered when she was severely injured in a battle.
Sampson transformed herself into Robert Shurtleff and she joined the Fourth Massachusetts Regiment. Sampson wasn’t given an easy job in the military. “She was given the dangerous task of scouting neutral territory to assess the British buildup of men and materiel in Manhattan, which General George Washington contemplated attacking.” She was successful in her performance for about two years. Even when she was severely injured, she treated the injuries herself so that her secret wouldn’t be discovered. Her true sex was discovered when she got sick and was taken to a hospital. Sampson received an honorable discharge on October 23. 1783. The rest of her life was pretty typical for a farmer’s wife but she did a lecture tour to tell the rest of the country about her experience. She was the first woman to do so.
I added Sampson to this project because I thought that it was important to my argument. Her story really exemplifies the argument that gender is a performance and is performed by people daily. Sampson, as far as we know, did not truly identify as a man but successfully performed as one for a few years. The United States even granted her husband the right to her pension after she died. This story, as well as the other stories, show life is a performance but it doesn’t mean that you have to perform within the gender guidelines that society forces on people of different genders.
Obviously, Deborah Sampson did not fit into the gender ideals of her gender as well. She was a woman and identified as a woman. During wartime, she would have been expected to stay home and run the home while the men were on the battle field.
I have always been amazed by this woman. Truly, I almost wrote a project about her in the fourth grade when we did the wax museum project. Unfortunately, three other girls wanted to do write about her as well and my teacher made me choose someone else.
