Rogers had a similar way with people — a sweet approach to looking out for others, whether they deserved it or not. Those who knew Rogers say her love, unconditional and without discrimination, now feels even more profound following her recent death in a #murdersuicide that was an act of domestic violence. “We lost a good one with her,” said friend Domonic McGrath. “She loved every animal. She loved every person she ever met.” Rogers, 50, was found dead with a cut to her neck when police performed a welfare check at her home in #GooseCreek on Nov. 15. Her live-in boyfriend, 38-year-old Alex Schaffer, was at the home and got into a physical struggle with officers, who used Tasers on him, but the stuns appeared to have no effect. He later died in the hospital from self-inflicted wounds, authorities said. Rogers' death is the fifth homicide attributed to #domesticviolence in #BerkeleyCounty this year. The killing came 10 days after a Hanahan woman was strangled by her boyfriend, police say. Previously ranked the worst state in the nation for men killing women, #SouthCarolina fell to the fifth worst in a recent national report that evaluated 2014 data. Still, the state’s rate of killing women remains markedly higher than the national average. McGrath was Rogers' neighbor when she lived in #Summerville, which brought them close, like family. He said Schaffer lived with Rogers on and off, and the couple's problems dated back a few years and at times centered around Schaffer's drug use. On the day of Rogers' death, police were alerted by a caller who phoned dispatchers to say that Schaffer claimed to have killed Rogers and that he was detoxing from drugs, according to an incident report.
