Rainbow Swing AU Headcanon
So while writing the next chapter, I came up with a headcanon for your Swing AU. In my head Rainbow has taken a REAL liking to magic tricks. As such she’s started practising sleight of hand and other sneaky, thief-like skills. However, cause her ego can get big and Sunset knows it, Sunset never says ‘very good’ to her. At least not as often as Rainbow would like.
This leads Rainbow to train to get better and better at her skills (even though she’s already exceptional) to earn the proper adoration. Also maybe the Wonderbolts could be a very famous group of magicians Rainbow looks up to? Just a bunch of ideas that popped into my head.
Thanks for the headcanon @deathscar 110% accepted! ^^

Wonder
“And…” Rainbow shouted as she flicked a card up into the air. As it fell in front of her face, she swiftly snapped it up with two fingers. “Tada!” She stood proudly, turning the face of her card towards Sunset.
Sunset smirked, plucking the card from Rainbow’s grasp.
“It’s your card, isn’t it?” Rainbow’s mouth was drawn into a proud smile. Using her fingers, she ruffled through the remaining deck of cards, effortlessly cutting and shuffling it with her right hand. “No no, don’t need to say anything. Of course it is.”
Wow Rainbow, careful. If your ego gets any larger it might eclipse the sun. Sunset stared at the jack of clubs, raising an eyebrow. “And what if I said it wasn’t my card?”
“Then you’re lying.” Rainbow shot the deck from her right hand to her left, a satisfying riffling noise echoing through the air. “I’ve practiced this trick for weeks until it was flawless.”
Sunset’s eyes widened in surprise. Wow. Gotta admit, that’s some dedication. With a grin on her face, she passed the card back to Rainbow. “Well, the trick is good. But it’s no hoofdini.”
Rainbow picked the card from Sunset’s hand, her prideful smirk having been replaced with an unimpressed frown. “Wow, control yourself Sunset. I can only handle so much praise at one time,” she said with a deadpan tone.
“Oh sorry Miss Copperfi-”
“Yeah yeah,” Rainbow snickered, placing a hand swiftly upon Sunset’s face as she playfully pushed it away. “I’ll do a trick that’ll impress you eventually. You’ll see.”
----------
“And then, ka-pow! I’ll punch him right in the kisser!” Rainbow slammed her fist into her palm, beaming as she spoke.
“Oh will you now?” Sunset asked, raising an eyebrow. At least she has an active imagination. She thought with her gaze locked onto the street ahead. “So, what’ll you do after you punch him? Tackle him for hurting your friend?”
Sunset waited for a couple of seconds, but no reply came. She turned her head, noticing that Rainbow has vanished from her side. Instantly, her heart started to race and adrenaline pumped through her veins. “Rainbow!? Rainbow!” She screamed, scanning her vision across the road in hopes of catching sight of her six colored hair.
The first thing that caught her eye was the building that sat on the opposite end of the street. Bright lights ran up the building sides, rising all the way to its roof. The words ‘Ponyville Theatre’ adorned the front in bright colorful lettering while the two panels above read ‘Wonderbolts! World’s Greatest Magicians perform tonight!’
Don’t tell me...
She lowered her gaze to the ticketing counter at the front and sure enough, Rainbow was standing in front, her head staring upwards at the posters that lined the entrance.
Sunset raced over, a mixture of relief and anger filling her heart. “Rainbow Dash!”
Rainbow didn’t budge. Upon reaching, Sunset could see that Rainbow’s mouth was drawn into a large smile and her eyes were practically glittering with wonder.
“Rainbow!”
“Huh?” Rainbow gave several blinks as if she was just snapping out of a trance.
“Don’t you dare run off like that again! You nearly gave me a heart attack!”
“But… Sunset look.” Rainbow pointed to a poster of an orange-haired girl holding an ace of spades. Her entire body was obscured with darkness, except for her hair, her smile and the card in her hand. Large yellow and blue text at the bottom read ‘Wonderbolts’ followed by a symbol of thunder striking from a dark cloud.
Wow that symbol looks… familiar. ...Oh! Sunset realized that if the thunderbolt was colored like a rainbow, it would have been almost identical to Rainbow’s very own magician symbol she designed.
“Wonderbolts? Are these the ‘world’s greatest magicians’ you keep talking about?” Sunset asked, taking a step closer to the poster. She ran her eyes up and down the mysterious figure’s form.
“Yup! That right there’s Spitfire. She’s the leader of the Wonderbolt Troupe! And probably the greatest magician that’ll ever live!”
“Ever live? I find that hard to believe.” Sunset swung her attention back to Rainbow, who was bouncing on her spot. Wow, I’ve never seen her so excited before.
“Well, don’t take my word for it. Let her prove it to you!”
“How?” Sunset asked. She stared at Rainbow with a perplexed expression. However, as Rainbow gazed back with a large, growing grin, it started to sink in what Rainbow was implying. “Oh no no no. We don’t have the time or the money.”
Rainbow’s expression fell into despair. Her bouncing stopped immediately and the joyful atmosphere around them seemed to cease altogether. “Sunset…” Rainbow dragged her name as she said it.
“Look, I’m sorry Rainbow. We barely have enough cash to keep us fed as it is.”
Rainbow gave a depressed sigh and folded her arms with a frown. “I… I know.” She reluctantly muttered. “I just thought… you know, nevermind.” Silently, Rainbow began to shuffle away, her shoulders drooping as if they were being weighed down.
The sight crushed Sunset’s heart. She turned back to the poster, her eyes focused entirely on the symbol at the corner. A million thoughts ran through her mind but one in particular stood out to her.
These magicians are her heroes. Who knows how long they’ll be here?
“Wait.”
Sunset’s voice stopped Rainbow in her tracks. She turned back with a small glint of hope in her eye. “If, and I mean if we get tickets. You have to promise me youll work super hard for our next few jobs alright?”
Rainbow shot up into the air then into Sunset’s arms. “Yes! Yes I promise! I’ll work triple hard! Rainbow Dash’s word!”
Sunset couldn’t help but smile at Rainbow’s enthusiasm. She strolled to the ticketing counter with Rainbow right behind her.
“Two tickets to the next Wonderbolt show please.”
“Alright!” The man at the counter answered. “Just in time too, the next show starts in a few minutes! That’ll be ten dollars!”
Rainbow winced upon hearing the price. Sunset did too, though she did it internally. She handed the ten bills to the man, who passed them each a ticket stub in return.
“Oh thank you thank you thank you Sunset! You won’t regret this!”
“I better not.” Sunset said smugly. “Though I gotta ask, why didn’t I hear anything about their show in the papers?”
“They don’t announce when they arrive!” Rainbow replied enthusiastically as they strolled through the main doors of the theatre. “Their shows appear out of nowhere and only for a random amount of time. You could have the Wonderbolts pass by your place, do a couple of shows and leave. And you wouldn’t even know they were there!”
“So their shows are like…. magic?” Sunset joked with a playful smirk on her face. Rainbow merely rolled her eyes and picked up her pace.
“Come on! Let’s get in before the show starts!”
-----------
Sunset shuffled nervously in her cushioned seat. She was seated at the second row from the front, though she wouldn’t have been able to tell. The lights had been shut off completely, drenching the room in darkness so thick, she couldn’t even see Rainbow seated beside her.
She didn’t know how long she had been waiting. It felt like the better part of an hour, though inside her mind, she knew it had probably only been five minutes.
Suddenly, a spotlight clicked itself on, shining a blinding light onto the stage. Sunset lifted her hand to shield her eyes and, finally being able to see the people around her, she wasn’t the only one.
“Good evening ladies and gentlemen.” A voice echoed from in front of Sunset. Once her vision had time to adjust, she lowered her hand and spotted the orange-haired girl in the poster standing on the stage. She was dressed in a black magician’s outfit, complete with the white bowtie and black cape while a top hat sat on top of her head.
Spitfire, was that her name? Sunset thought, watching her scan the audience slowly.
“My name is Spitfire…”
Well that answers that.
“And you’re all lucky enough to be passing by the theatre where we’re hosting our show. Not only that, you decided to get a ticket to watch our performance.”
Yeah a five dollar ticket each. Sunset drew an agitated breath at the thought. However, a quick glance at Rainbow staring at the stage with glittering eyes reminded Sunset why she agreed in the first place. She returned her gaze to Spitfire, smiling softly. Let’s just hope I enjoy it as much as she does.
“Call it luck. Fate. Destiny. But the chances of all of you happening across our theatre when we’re hosting our first show here… well, that’s pretty amazing. So, I think it’s only fair that we, the Wonderbolts, give you the single, most amazing show of your life!” Spitfire extended both of her arms outwards and all of a sudden, the speakers roared to life with an energetic tune while the stage was illuminated by countless lights.
And the sight Sunset saw made her, and everybody around her, drop their jaws in awe.
The stage was filled with several men and women, each with a different hair color, performing a different act at different parts. At the left side, a girl with pale white hair was levitating off the ground as she flew around in small circles. While at the back, a tall, spiky haired man strolled through a wall of fire, emerging completely unscathed.
However, the one thing that truly caught Sunset’s eye was their costumes. Every single one bared the same color scheme and logo. Be it the unitard the levitating girl was sporting or the shirt the green-haired man wore, all of them were colored a bright blue and yellow with a thunderbolt striking right down the middle. Sunset took another glance at the back of the stage, watching the man return into the fire before stepping out on the other side once more.
Wonder how his blue hair doesn’t get singed right off. Sunset turned and couldn’t help but giggle upon spotting Rainbow’s expression. Her jaw had fallen as far as it could go. Yet the sides of her mouth was pulled upwards into the largest smile Sunset had ever seen. It was as if Rainbow was at a candy store and every passing second was a different treat.
“But, let’s start simple shall we?” With a snap of Spitfire’s fingers, the stage lights vanished, cutting the other acts from view. “Let’s start with…” Without warning, she rakishly threw her cape in front of her.
What’s that supposed to d- Before Sunset had a chance to finish her thought, the cape fell to the floor and no one stood behind it.
Spitfire had vanished.
Hushed whispers dotted the crowd. Sunset could hear scattered voices saying ‘where did she go?’ and ‘is this part of the act?’
Suddenly, the theatre’s lights cut back on, giving everyone full view of the stage. However, that only turned the hushed whispers into loud speaking and murmuring. Even Sunset sat dumbfounded once she had seen what was in front of her. Or more accurately, the lack of it.
For the stage sat empty.
There were no tracers of the awe-inspiring acts that stood there mere minutes ago. The floor was pristine and the curtains looked exactly as they did before the show began.
Sunset spotted Rainbow glancing around excitedly, the grin still very much sprawled on her face.
“A disappearing act!” Spitfire’s loud voice resonated from the middle of the theatre. Sunset swung her head to the back, spotting the magician standing with her arms outstretched, her suit and cape having been replaced with a yellow and blue jumpsuit. The top hat on her head had disappeared completely, allowing her spiky fiery-colored hair to stand out.
The crowd erupted into a deafening applause. Sunset began to clap when a loud, joyful scream erupted from beside her. She turned, spotting Rainbow leaping up from her seat and clapping wildly, causing the people around her to give odd, judging stares.
But knowing Rainbow, she wouldn’t care. Sunset smirked wide, returning her attention to Spitfire.
Spitfire took a bow. With confident, faultless strides, she strolled down the aisles. Every clap, shout and praise seemed to energize her, causing the smile on her face to grow with every passing second. The same infectious spirit had started to spread to the people she passed. And even Sunset found it hard to resist grinning wide as Spitfire crossed her path,
Once she returned to the stage, the lights above the audience dimmed, causing the clapping to slowly cease.
“Now that the prologue is out of the way…”
Rainbow leaned into Sunset. “That was the prologue!?”
Sunset gave a soft giggle, returning her focus to Spitfire.
“Let’s begin with Act 1.”
----------
“And…” Fleetfoot begun speaking. She brought a lighter close to the deck of cards and, in a flash of fire and smoke, it disappeared. That is, except for one. “Is this your card?”
The audience member nodded enthusiastically. His applause came with that of the hundreds in the audience. With a smile, Fleetfoot took a bow before exiting off the stage and the volunteer returned to his seat. Mere moments later, Spitfire returned once more.
“For this next trick…” Spitfire deftly played with a coin in her right hand. It swung under, over and around her fingers, doing tricks that Sunset wouldn’t have even thought possible. “I’ll need a volunteer.”
Sunset turned to Rainbow, whose eyes were surprisingly locked onto her own feet. Her eyes showed a silent longing and her cheeks were a soft red.
Wow, shyness. Didn’t think that girl had that emotion in her. She turned her attention back to Spitfire, who was glancing out towards the crowd.
“A lot of hands. But I don’t see any-”
“Over here!” Sunset shouted, raising a hand high up. Spitfire locked gazes with her and Sunset gave a beaming grin.
“What the heck are you doing?” She heard Rainbow lean over and speak in a hushed tone.
“Rainbow here would like to volunteer!” Sunset pointed at Rainbow, giving her a side wink as she did so.
“Wait what!? I’m not going t-”
“Is that so? Well, then let’s welcome Rainbow!” Spitfire shouted and a round of applause followed her words. Sunset quickly pushed Rainbow forward, not even giving a second glance at her angered glare.
Rainbow nervously took the spotlight. Her fingers trembled softly as she approached Spitfire. As they met, Spitfire shook Rainbow’s hand with full confidence, a bright grin on her face.
“Love your hair.”
“T-thanks.” Rainbow stammered, a speech pattern Sunset was definitely not used to hearing.
“Well, up for helping me with a trick?”
“Y-yeah. O-of course.”
“Actually, think of it more like a bet.” Spitfire flourished the coin once more before holding it up in front of Rainbow’s face. Sunset couldn’t see the coin with any detail from where she sat, though if Rainbow’s jaw hitting the floor was any indication, it was probably beautiful. “This is my lucky coin. It’s one of a kind so there’s no more like it in the world.”
Rainbow recoiled upon hearing the words.
“Here’s the bet. You have three chances. If you can grab the coin from my fingers before I hide it, you get to keep it. Wonderbolt’s promise.”
Spitfire’s words seemed to ignite a spark within Rainbow. Her awed, dumbfounded expression had given way to one of confidence. Though Sunset could see that her hands were still trembling slightly, she couldn’t help but smile.
That’s the Rainbow I know.
“So, up to take the bet?” Spitfire asked, gesturing to Rainbow.
“You bet I am.”
“Very well!” Spitfire held the coin out front with two fingers, grinning wide. “Whenever you’re ready!”
Rainbow flicked her fingers by her side several times to warm them up. The tip of her tongue had found its way out of her mouth as she bounced on the spot. Suddenly, she shot her arm out almost quicker than Sunset could see.
She must’ve gotten it.
“Ooo, close.” The hand that Spitfire held the coin with was now turned over in a fist. She turned it upwards, revealing the circular object sitting squarely in the middle. “Try again.”
Rainbow’s smile had vanished. Her eyebrows furrowed and the nervous shivering had stopped completely. Sunset knew what those tells meant.
She… she really wants this.
Rainbow attempted to swipe the coin once more. This time, it happened even quicker. Before Sunset had time to process what happen, Spitfire’s voice came through the speakers.
“Almost! One last try Rainbow,” Spitfire said. With a wave of her hand, the coin reappeared at her fingertips.
Rainbow took a deep breath of air. She closed her eyes for a couple of seconds before opening them up.
The next several seconds passed by in silence. The tension in the theatre was so thick, it took a while before Sunset realized she was no longer drawing breath. Suddenly, there was a flash of movement from the two girls and the front and Sunset swore she could hear the audience take a gasp of air simultaneously.
Spitfire’s hand was in a tight fist, a smirk on her face. “Good try Rainbow. But that was three tries.”
Aw Rainbow… Sunset frowned, wondering just how heartbroken Rainbow must’ve been. She turned to catch Rainbow’s expression and, to her absolute shock, she saw Rainbow’s signature smirk plastered on her face.
“You’re right. That was three tries,” her voice was filled with confidence. There wasn’t a single hint of doubt or worry as she spoke, “good thing three tries is all I needed.” Pushing her thumb up, Rainbow revealed the shining coin that was hidden in her hand.
Sunset leapt out of seat in joy, cheering loudly.
And the audience followed suit.
Spitfire opened her hand in shock. Upon laying eyes on her empty palm, she turned her attention back to Rainbow with a soft, caring smile.
Rainbow flourished the coin, turning to the audience and giving a bow. The people around Sunset rose from their seats to give her a standing ovation. As the cheering continued, Sunset felt her happiness slowly give way to pride. She watched as Spitfire shook Rainbow’s hand. She could see that Spitfire was muttering something to Rainbow, but couldn’t discern what it was through the thunderous applause. Rainbow swiftly descended the steps and returned to the audience, praise showering her every step of the way.
“Heh, I see you got your money’s worth?” Sunset asked as Rainbow retook her seat.
“More than you know.” Rainbow passed the coin to Sunset.
Up close, Sunset could see the detail of the coin. However, it was vastly different than the shining gold item she had imagined. It was made of a dull copper alloy. ‘Well-worn’ would have been a kind way to describe its state. It was badly blemished from repeated use. Though the one thing that stood out was the symbol that was embossed on it. It resembled a thunderbolt, much like the Wonderbolt’s insignia.
“Why’d you look so shocked when you saw this? It’s just a coin.” Sunset returned it to Rainbow, who took it into her hands. She held her palms tightly together, as if the coin was part of her life.
“It’s the Wonderbolt coin. There’s a long history behind it I’ll tell you some other time.”
“Right. And Spitfire said something to you after you grabbed it?”
Rainbow turned to Sunset with a smile. “I’ll tell you later.”
-----------
Fire lit Spitfire alight.
The crowd gasped in a mixture of shock and horror. They sat on the very edges of their seats as the flames continued to spread throughout the girl on the stage.
“Heh, no need to fear. We did say this would be our last trick wouldn’t we?”
Sunset didn’t like the way Spitfire said her words.
The other Wonderbolts quickly assembled beside her. They turned to the crowd, each holding the hand of the person beside them. Then at once, they gave a bow.
“We would like to thank all of you for coming to our show! We are the Wonderbolts! And we hope you take this display of magic and the feeling of awe with you home tonight!” Spitfire said, seemingly unphased as the searing fire grew wilder and wilder with each passing second.
Sunset was half tempted to rush up to put out the flames, but she had to constantly tell herself that it’s all just an act. They know what they’re doing.
Without warning, the entire stage lit up in a blazing torrent. The crowd gasped as the bright flash appeared and disappeared quicker than they could comprehend. And, as the smoke cleared, the stage stood empty. There wasn’t a prop, imperfection or Wonderbolt left standing. Even the speakers had fell silent, the lively, blood-pumping music was no longer filling the stadium.
Sunset was the first to stand, though she did so filled with worry. She attempted to find traces of the magicians that stood there just a moment ago, though she could see nothing out of place.
The audience soon followed Sunset’s gesture and shot up from their seats. The difference being that a round of thunderous applause followed their stand. Several members, including Rainbow, whistled loudly. While several others screamed for an encore.
Sunset soon allowed her worry to melt away. This must’ve been part of the plan. And she too began joining in with the standing ovation.
After a short while, the audience started to clear out. Sunset turned, ready to take her first step out of her aisle when she felt her jacket being tugged from behind. She swung around, spotting Rainbow staring up at her.
“Don’t go,” Rainbow spoke.
“Huh? Why? The performance’s over.”
“Not for us.” Rainbow brandished the coin in her fingers. “Remember when I said I’d ‘tell you later’? Well, Spitfire told me to stay till everyone else has left.”
Sunset raised an eyebrow and opened her mouth to protest. However, seeing Rainbow’s wide, confident smile told Sunset that she wasn’t lying.
At least, she hoped Rainbow wasn’t lying.
Sunset retook her seat, watching as everyone around her slowly took their leave. It didn’t take long before the theatre was empty. The only two visible souls being Sunset and Rainbow.
“So, think it was worth the $10?” Rainbow asked, flicking the coin between her fingers.
“Was it worth it for you?” Sunset shot the question back to her.
“Yes! A hundred times yes! It would’ve been worth it even if it was $20!” Rainbow shouted, raising her arms in the air.
Wait till you’re the one paying. Sunset thought. She gave a glance down to Rainbow’s fingers, watching the coin slide, swing and shoot in a flash of movement. The sound of clicking metal echoed on the walls of the empty hall. Gotta admit. Sunset spotted the coin vanishing from her left palm before appearing in the right. Rainbow’s ridiculously talented. She looked up and realized that Rainbow wasn’t even paying attention to what she was doing. Her eyes were locked onto the stage while her mouth was drawn into a nervous frown.
After a couple of silent minutes, Sunset finally spoke up. “I don’t think they’re coming.”
“Come on, Sunset. Just five more minutes,” Rainbow begged.
Sunset was about to protest when a voice called out from the stage.
“Yeah. Just five more minutes!” Spitfire spoke in a playful tone as she strutted onto the stage.
Sunset saw Rainbow’s eyes practically light up like lights on a Christmas tree when the magician reappeared.
“S-Spitfire!” Rainbow stuttered, pocketing the coin.
“Heh, hey Rainbow Dash. Come on.” She gestured, prompting Sunset and Rainbow to sprint up and join her as she made her way backstage.
Spitfire pushed the back curtains aside, strolling down the large corridors lined with doors.
“That was an amazing show, Spitfire!” Rainbow shouted with her mouth drawn wide.
“Thank you! Glad you two enjoyed it!” Spitfire thanked before turning her attention to Sunset. “You must be Rainbow’s… urr… s-sister?”
Sunset giggled. “Guardian.”
“Oh?” Spitfire said with a hint of shock. She stuck her hand out towards Sunset. “Nice to meet you…?”
“Sunset. Sunset Shimmer,” she took her hand, giving a firm shake.
“Well, hope you two are hungry.” Spitfire spoke, stopping right in front of a door with a large star emblazoned on the front.
“Now that you mention it…”
Sunset smiled softly as she spotted Rainbow rubbing her belly.
Spitfire pushed the door open and took a step in. As the duo followed behind, their nostrils were immediately hit with the scent of freshly cooked treats. Sunset gave her nose a soft rub, feeling as if the smell had punched her from the sheer intensity.
At the same time, her eyes caught sight of the enormous size of the room. It resembled more of a suite from a hotel rather than a dressing room, with a kitchen, two bathrooms and a large king sized bed. However, what truly caught her eye were the Wonderbolts that were seated around, chatting and eating happily from their plates.
“Bolts, meet the girl who took the coin.” Spitfire gestured towards Rainbow, whose eyes glimmered and shone like diamonds.
“Please tell me this isn’t a dream,” Rainbow muttered under her breath.
Sunset shot her hand forward, giving Rainbow a slight pinch on her arm and causing her to yelp in pain.
“Hey, what do you know. Not a dream.” A playful smirk accompanied Sunset’s words. Rainbow shot her a death glare before turning back to her heroes.
“Well, nice to meet you Rainbow Dash,” Soarin greeted, lounging at the back of the room beside Fleetfoot. “Come on, grab a plate from the buffet table and join us!”
The squeal Rainbow emitted forced Sunset to place a finger on her ear just to protect her hearing. If there’s a better reason to not make Rainbow too happy, I haven’t heard it. Actually I might not hear anything ever again if she squeals like that once more.
Rainbow zipped towards the buffet table, loading her plate before joining the Bolts in their chat. Sunset took her time to fill her plate with several cuts of meatloaf, slices of pizza and a cookie before taking a seat away from the group. She ate in silence, occasionally glancing up at Rainbow to see her talking with animated gestures. All the while a huge, unwavering smile was stuck on her face.
Suddenly, Sunset heard a voice speak from beside her. “Not joining your kid?”
Sunset turned, spotting Spitfire taking a seat beside her. She chuckled, staring as Rainbow whipped out the coin, passing it to the other Bolts.
“Not my kid,” Sunset clarified, forking another slice of meatloaf into her mouth. “Plus, this is her moment. I can spend all the time I want with her later. But this is a once in a lifetime chance for her.”
“Mind if I ask how you two afforded our tickets?” Spitfire asked. “Not that I’m assuming you’re poor, it’s just-”
“You wouldn’t be too far off,” Sunset admitted, turning to Spitfire. “We don’t earn a lot in our line of work.”
“Then why come to our show?”
Sunset heard Rainbow’s laughter echo through the room, along with that of the other Bolts.
“Because you’re all her heroes.”
Spitfire seemed speechless for a second. She gave Sunset a beat, as if expecting a longer answer. “That simple?”
“When I was young, I never even got a chance to try to fulfill my dreams. The way her face lit up when she saw your poster hanging from the theatre wall...” Sunset paused, shaking her head and chuckling slightly. “I can skip a couple of meals a day for a week or so to earn back the cash. It won’t kill me. But this experience will never come again. Not for her.”
Spitfire leaned back into her chair. She rested her elbow on the back seat, pressing her hand softly into her mouth. Her eyes told Sunset she was lost in her thought, though what she was thinking, Sunset had no idea.
“What do you work as?”
Sunset placed her plate softly down onto the small round table between them. “Nothing nice.”
“Ah,” Spitfire raised her head, understanding Sunset’s reply perfectly. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone. Wonderbolt promise.”
“How good is a Wonderbolt promise?” Sunset asked cautiously.
“You get kicked out of the troupe if you break a Wonderbolt promise so… pretty good.”
Sunset smiled for a moment, before allowing it to melt into a frown. “I know what you’re thinking. No, it’s not a good line of work for Rainbow.”
“Then why are you still in it?”
“Because…” Sunset stared at Spitfire with deadly serious eyes. “It puts food on the table.” She turned to Rainbow, spotting her vanishing the coin with one hand. The other Bolts gave a round of applause and Rainbow’s grin only grew wider.
“How did you find her?” Spitfire asked.
“Starving, on the streets.”
“So you took her in?”
Sunset bit her lip, sighing. “She’s so young. And to see what kind of hand life dealt her, I couldn’t just stand by and watch her live like that.”
“But your profession…” Spitfire’s tone changed to one of concern.
“Heh, well, like I said, it feeds her. And I know it’s wrong to ask a kid to be part of this but I don’t have a choice. No one wants to hire me and after this, no one else will.” She drew a long, slow breath. “So I suppose the question is, which is worse? Being raised by a criminal but getting to eat?” Sunset shut her eyes tight. “Or starving on the street, yet away from all the terrible people?”
A moment of silence fell between the two girls.
“I don’t know the right answer.” Spitfire’s reply brought a sliver of calm to the storm of feelings that were in Sunset’s heart.
Even then, thinking about her reply, Sunset felt the atmosphere of the room drop significantly. The weight of the air around her threatened to squeeze all the breath from her lungs. She bit her lip, replying with shaky breath.
“I don’t either.”
Spitfire tapped Sunset’s shoulder. When she opened her eyes and turned back up, she saw a cup of water in Spitfire’s hand.
Sunset grasped the plastic with a soft smile, before lifting it to her lips and taking a gulp.
“You care a lot for her don’t you?”
She lowered the cup, placing it beside her plate.
“More than I can say.” Sunset gave Spitfire a small smile. One Spitfire returned in kind.
“Sunset! Sunset!” Rainbow’s voice drew both girl’s attention to her as she dashed forward. “Look at this cool trick the Wonderbolts taught me!” She placed the coin in her palm before closing her fingers around it. After giving it one firm shake, she reopened her fist and the coin had vanished.
Sunset’s eyes shot wide. “Whoa, that’s… pretty good.”
“Pretty good?” Rainbow repeated joyfully. “I got a pretty good out of Sunset!”
“Told you that trick impresses everyone!” Fleetfoot shouted from the back.
“Hey! Don’t teach her any fire tricks alright?” Spitfire said.
“Of course not!” Soarin replied. “But on a totally unrelated note, do you have a match?”
Spitfire raised an eyebrow. “Nope. I’m single.”
The entire room burst into laughter. And though Sunset didn’t chortle at first, she soon joined the joy that was filling the air, giggling along with the Wonderbolts. Along with Spitfire.
And along with Rainbow.
----------
“Thank you for letting us be part of your group, if only for a little while,” Sunset said as she strolled with them to the exit.
“Hey, as long as you two had a good time.” Spitfire smiled.
“The best time!” Rainbow added, grinning from ear to ear.
“That’s good.” Spitfire stopped at the large door which read ‘EXIT’ in big red letters. “You better keep our tricks safe, you hear Rainbow?”
“Wonderbolt’s promise!” Rainbow answered confidently, puffing her chest out slightly.
“Well, thank you again Spitfire, but we should get goi-”
“Wait!” Rainbow shouted. She took several steps towards Spitfire, staring up at her with a bright beam on her face.
“What is it Dash?”
“Here.” Rainbow held out her hand, one which held a familiar coin between her fingers. Spitfire glanced down, confused.
“That’s yours, Rainbow. You won it.”
“Yeah, I did. But it means more to you than it does to me.”
Rainbow’s words caused Sunset’s jaw to drop. Already, she could feel tears welling up in her eyes but she tried her best to suppress them.
Spitfire grinned, lightly grabbing the coin and bouncing it between her fingers. “Thank you, Rainbow. But I can’t let you leave empty handed.”
Turning to Sunset, Spitfire began speaking, “check your back pocket will you?”
Oh what now? Sunset reached for her back pocket, expecting to feel only the fabric of her jeans. “Yeah there’s nothing in her-” As she reached her hand in, she felt a rectangular object hiding inside. She pulled it out, spotting a folded envelope. “How did…?”
Spitfire gave a wink to the two girls, grinning wide. “It’s getting late. You two should head home while the street’s still full.” She swung around and started to walk away.
Rainbow and Sunset merely stared at her in confused wonder before heading out the door themselves. As soon as the door closed shut behind them, Sunset started to rip the envelope open when she felt two arms wrap around her waist. She looked down, spotting Rainbow giving her a large hug.
“Thank you, Sunset. For everything.”
The urge to cry was getting near impossible for Sunset to stop.
She gave Rainbow a hug in return. “As long as you had a good time.”
“I’ll do something cool for you one day, I promise.”
“Wonderbolt promise?” Sunset asked, giggling.
Rainbow nodded several times. “Wonderbolt promise.” As they broke their hug, Rainbow was the first to stroll forward onto the sidewalk with Sunset close behind.
Ripping open the last part of the letter, she reached her fingers in and pulled out the contents. However, upon seeing what was in her fingers, she screeched to a halt.
In her hand sat two five dollar notes along with a shining, golden ticket. A handwritten note was at the front of it all and it read ‘Use this ticket when you need our help. Wonderbolts always stick together. That means you and Rainbow. Take care of her for us, alright? - SF’.
“Hey!” Rainbow’s voice snapped Sunset out of her daze. She glanced upwards, noticing Rainbow gesturing for her at the traffic light. “Light’s changing! Come on!”
Tucking the contents back into the envelope, Sunset sprinted forward, all while one word rang constantly in her mind.
Wonderbolts...?
----------
Spitfire entered the dressing room, flourishing the coin in her hand. She spotted Soarin seated on her bed, eyes growing wide as a familiar clicking echoed through the room.
“She returned it,” Soarin spoke in disbelief as he pushed himself off the bed.
Spitfire knew he was expecting a reply, yet found it unnecessary to give one. Just ask the question already.
And as if on cue, Soarin spoke, “did you ask her?”
“Nope.” Spitfire gave an instant reply.
“Why not?” Soarin asked. “She returned the coin. She passed the Wonderbolt test. What, were you worried she was going to say no?”
Spitfire laughed, taking a seat on her chair. “Quite the opposite actually.”
“You were worried she would say… yes?”
Spitfire gave a nod as her reply.
Soarin stared at her, dumbfounded. “I… don’t get it. She’s smart. She has stage presence. She’s super talented for her age. She’d be a perfect fit! And the other Bolts already love her!”
“Yeah, I know.”
Spitfire stared at the damaged, worn coin in her hand. Holding it up to the window, she watched as the moonlight glimmered and glittered around it, illuminating it softly. Though it wasn’t made of gold, for a couple of seconds, Spitfire could believe it was. She gave it a small smile before turning her head back up to meet Soarin’s gaze.
“But they don’t love her as much as she does.”

Shadow
“So? Is she okay?” Rainbow asked while she nibbled on her fingernails. Sunset opened her mouth to berate Rainbow’s terrible habits but swiftly closed it just a second later.
She won’t listen anyway. Sunset drew a breath before speaking, “calm down Rainbow. You didn’t get an answer the last four times you asked, you’re not going to get one now,” Sunset said, feeling a finger press into her ribcage.
“Does this hurt?” Fluttershy asked, pushing her gloved thumb into a faint black spot on Sunset’s side.
“Nope. Not even a little,” Sunset answered with a grin.
“Then it looks like your wounds healed just fine. You may put your shirt back on.” Fluttershy stood from her kneeling position and made her way to the desk at the other end of the room.
Sunset pulled the teal colored garment over her head, sliding her arms through the respective sleeves before tugging the collar down. She watched as Fluttershy ruffled through her table drawer, filling the room with the sound of shuffling papers.
Sunset took this time to glance around the office. It contained only several pieces of furniture. Most notably a tall cabinet filled to the brim with bottles and boxes of all kinds. She was seated on a cushioned examination table in the middle of the room, while at the far end sat Fluttershy’s mahogany desk. Countless papers were stacked neatly into several piles, each sitting in their own individual tray.
Maybe I should get to organizing my place like that. Sunset recalled her table, where a mountain of papers, stationery and miscellaneous items sat in a disheveled mess atop it. Simply the thought of attempting to shuffle through that mess made Sunset feel exhausted. Eh, I’ll just do it some other time.
“Ahem.” Sunset leaped up a little upon hearing how close Fluttershy’s voice was. She turned her head, realizing that the doctor was already standing right beside her, waiting.
“Oh hey Doc. Didn’t-”
“So, she’s okay?” Rainbow interrupted, the tip of her thumb still jammed in between her teeth.
“Yes, she’s fine for now,” Fluttershy spoke with her gaze locked squarely onto Sunset’s. “But she needs to take better care of herself. With how often she’s coming into my office, she’s starting to worry me.” She grabbed Sunset’s wrist lightly, turning her hand so that her palm faced upwards. She placed a tiny orange container in it before forcing her fingers close.
Sunset could only smirk through the whole ordeal. In one swift motion, she pocketed the item and retrieved several dollar bills from her back pocket with her other hand. “I didn’t know you cared about what happens to criminals like us.”
Fluttershy gave a soft sigh, plucking the notes from Sunset’s grip before placing it in her own pocket. “I’m a doctor. It’s my job to care about my patients. Whoever they may be.”
“Thank you, Doctor.” Rainbow gave a warm smile towards Fluttershy, who returned a tiny one in kind. “We wouldn’t know what we’d do without you.”
“Yes, well, you’re very welcome but it is getting very late. Would you mind-”
“Right. We got it. You want us to…” Sunset gave a smack of her lips and a point to the door. “Come on, Rainbow. Let’s not hold up Miss Fluttershy.”
Rainbow nodded, giving Fluttershy a wave goodbye. Sunset grabbed her black jacket off the coat rack, slipping it on with ease.
However, as Sunset reached for the doorknob, it began to turn on its own. She swiftly retracted her arm in shock, hearing a ‘click’ echo through the room. The door swung open, revealing a familiar orange-haired detective standing at the doorway,
“Hey Flutters, ready to g-” Applejack froze in stunned silence once her eyes landed on the two girls in front of her. “Wait, what-”
“Go!” Sunset shouted to Rainbow and pointed towards an open window. They took off towards it, rushing pass a perplexed Fluttershy before leaping out the window and onto the streets outside.
“Wait wait wait! Ah ain’t gonna arrest you!” Applejack’s voice yelled from behind, accompanied with a rapid barrage of footsteps.
Of course she’s giving chase. Sunset thought as she weaved through the pitch black alleyways. Why do all cops have to be so persistent? Suddenly, she and Rainbow screeched to a halt, noticing that the road had split into two paths: one of the left and the other to the right. Sunset squinted her eyes, hoping to discern which path was the better choice. However, a wall of vent smoke rising from the ground made it impossible.
“Go right, Rainbow. Find a place to hide. And <i>do not come out</i>,” Sunset ordered.
“Sunset I’m not-”
“Ya’ll stop! Please just hear me out!”
Upon hearing the voice call out from behind them, Sunset wasted no time and darted to the left while giving Rainbow a forceful push to the right. She sprinted straight down the alley, matching it’s winding turns with swift movements of her own.
The longer Sunset followed her path, the darker it became. Eventually, she could barely see a few feet in front of her, the thick veil of darkness obscuring all her vision.
“Please stop! Ah need your help!”
Oh dammit. Sunset continued her pace and slowly, her eyes began to adjust itself to the pitch black surroundings. However, the sight of what sat in front of her made her heart sink. A large brick wall towered over her, sealing her in a dead end. Upon reaching it, she pressed her hands upon the obstacle. She jumped and clawed at any loose bricks or hand-holds, but quickly determined that the wall was insurmountable.
“Okay would ya’ll just please listen to what I have to say!?” Applejack shouted in frustration.
Sunset pondered her options but found only one that was favorable to her. In a blink of an eye, she drew the handgun in her pocket and aimed it straight at Applejack’s face. The detective recoiled in worried shock.
“N-now, don’t do something you’ll regret,” Applejack raised her arms slightly into the air.
“What’s your deal huh? You keep shouting that you need my help-”
“Cause ah do!” Applejack interrupted.
“And you expect me to believe you? A cop that wants help from the very people you arrest and toss in jail!?” Sunset screamed, taking a step forward.
“I’m a private investigator! Not a cop!”
“Psh, same difference. Some of your kind is more crooked than any mafia I know.”
Applejack opened her mouth to reply, but a meek voice drew her attention behind her.
“A-Applejack?”
As if on instinct, Sunset turned her gun to the approaching figure. When the pink-haired girl noticed what was being aimed at her, she shrieked in horror, crouching down into a tiny ball.
Sunset, upon spotting Fluttershy, returned her aim onto Applejack. Oh dammit. She was tempted to open her mouth to comfort the shivering girl, but just as quickly shut it. Can’t show any weakness now.
“B-baby, go back in. It’ll be okay,” Applejack spoke in a slightly worried tone, a rare break in her usual faultless facade. She leaned down, wrapping her arms lightly around the sobbing girl.
“Wait, baby? You two know each other?” Sunset asked.
“That ain’t what’s important! Like I said a thousand times before, I need your help!”
“What could you possibly need my help for? And why would I-”
“Shadowbolts.”
The word stilled the air around the three girls. Sunset froze in shock and a gnawing fear had started creeping from her heart. No way this detective knows what she’s talking about. She tightened the grip on her pistol and asked, “what?”
“The Shadowbolts.” Applejack repeated with her arms still wrapped tenderly around Fluttershy. “You know what ah’m talking about don’t you?”
Sunset shook her head in disbelief. “You… you’re in way over your head, detective. Piece of advice, don’t…” Sunset paused. Several thoughts flashed rapidly through her mind in that moment of silence. The screams. The memories.
The regret.
Her hand that was holding the gun began to shake nervously. The anxiety that was growing within her threatened to take over. It threatened to reduce her to a fearful mess, but she summoned as much of her strength as she could. “Don’t meddle in affairs you don’t know anything about.” Sunset warned through shallow breaths.
Applejack pulled Fluttershy softly to her feet. “Ah ain’t being left with much of a choice here. They’re planning something. Something big. If we don’t stop them-”
“We? No, no there’s no ‘we’ in this.”
“People are gonna die!”
“And if I help so will we!” Sunset screamed. Only one person was on her mind. That girl’s smile. Her laugh. She shut her eyes tight for a split second, drawing another breath to steady her fraying nerves.
If I help… so will she.
Suddenly, a loud yell echoed through the alley. Sunset glanced behind Applejack, spotting a figure running straight towards her. As she approached, Sunset could see that the girl was sporting a light blue shirt tucked into a pair of brown pants. A camera bounced around her neck as she sprinted forth, but what truly caught Sunset’s eyes was the girl’s bright pink hair. It seemed impossibly puffy and resembled clumps of cotton candy.
“Get away from my cousin you no good criminal!” The girl shouted in a high pitched voice. Sunset swung her gun to aim at the advancing stranger.
“P-Pinkie!?” Applejack stuttered out. She reached out to stop her but a sudden black blur tackled Pinkie to the ground instead.
Sunset shook her head in confusion. When she darted her eyes to the two girls on the ground, she noticed a familiar multi-colored hairstyle on one of them.
“Rainbow!?” Sunset screamed. She reached down, pulling her off from Pinkie by her collar.
“Try to hurt Sunset again! I dare you!” Rainbow flailed her arms wildly at Pinkie, her face drawn into an angry snarl.
Pinkie pushed herself off the ground, moving to join Applejack’s side. Her shirt was crumpled and her hair was now in a disheveled mess. Her posture told Sunset she was ready to pounce again if given a chance, though this time her gaze was locked onto Rainbow. She was clenching her teeth tightly and every exhale was an audible huff.
“Pinkie, how’d you even find us?” Applejack asked as she hugged Fluttershy close.
“You girls didn’t make yourselves hard to follow.” A calm, refined voice said. Sunset turned to the source. From the back of the alley, a stranger with purple hair strolled forth, seemingly unphased when Sunset’s gun pointed at her. “There’s no need to worry. She isn’t going to shoot anybody.”
“And what makes you so sure about that?” Sunset asked, taking a step forward. Everyone else matched her gesture with a step back. Applejack especially was hugging the distraught doctor, positioning her safely behind.
“If you did, your finger would be on the trigger.”
Pinkie, Applejack and Fluttershy shot their eyes towards Sunset. And sure enough, her finger was placed just above the trigger. They opened their eyes wide in shock, prompting a sneer from Sunset.
“Now would you put down your arm. I can’t imagine how tired it must be.”
Sunset maintained her aim for a couple more seconds before lowering her arm, causing the others to give a sigh of relief.
“Detective, I’m going to give you the best advice you’ll ever hear in your life. Don’t mess with… with them,” Sunset warned. “They’re heartless. Give it up and just… enjoy your life. Continue arresting crooks like us, not going after a group that’ll end you and everyone you love.”
“I wish I could,” Applejack placed her free arm around Pinkie. “But if I don’t stop them, they’re gonna take the ones I love away anyway.”
Sunset averted her eyes, feeling a knot forming in her stomach. She stared at Rainbow, who looked back at her with wide worried eyes. “Who are they talking about?”
“No one.” Sunset felt her heart fall as she said those words. She knew it was a lie. She knew Applejack posed a point she couldn’t deny.
She knew Applejack was right.
“And you know it.” Applejack remarked in disbelief. “Y-you know how bad it’s gonna get if cwe don’t do something.”
Sunset shut her eyes tightly, her mind racing at a thousand thoughts. Dammit, why do I keep getting dragged back into this?
“Sunset?” Rainbow called out in a broken and terrified voice.
Sunset shut her eyes in contemplation. Every single part of her told her to walk away. That living a life without getting involved would be the right thing to do.
“Sunset what’re they talking about? Sunset?”
The emotions Sunset heard in Rainbow’s voice pushed all of her thoughts away.
All that is, except one.
Only for you Rainbow.
Sunset opened her eyes, locking her gaze onto Applejack. “Let’s say I were to help you. How can I be sure you won’t just lead me to prison huh?”
Applejack took a deep breath. She met Sunset’s glare, staring back into her bright teal eyes with an unwavering look. In an instant, she reached her hand up past her coat, grasping her shining, gold badge and tugging it off in one swift motion.
Fluttershy gasped in horror, holding Applejack’s arm tightly in hers. “Applejack, what’re you doing!?”
Applejack glanced down at Fluttershy, giving her a reassuring smile. “Doing what I need to to keep you safe.” Opening her palm, she allowed her badge to drop to the floor. It’s clanking the only sound resonating through the alley.
Sunset’s mouth fell open in slight disbelief. “Y-you’re serious about this?”
Applejack nodded in reply. “Please. I need all the help I can get. I love the people around me too much.”
Sunset huffed before giving a reply. “Fine.”
All of a sudden, a blinding pair of headlights lit the dark alley completely. The group lifted their arms to shield their eyes from the brightness. “What the-”
Before Rainbow had a chance to finish her sentence, the sound of an engine roaring to life reached their ears.
O-oh no. Sunset blinked several times, attempting to get her vision back once more. Okay Sunset time to think! With her thoughts racing at a thousand miles an hour, she glanced rapidly among her surroundings. Think! Suddenly, her eyes fell on a door on the building to her left. Well, not much of a choice now! She raced to it with her hand outstretched. Suddenly, just as she was about to touch it, the door swung open. Wha-
The next thing Sunset knew, she had fallen face first past the door into a pitch black room.
“Well, if the rest of you would kindly follow Sunset,” an unknown voice spoke somewhere from the darkness. Suddenly, Sunset heard the screeching of tires come from outside. “Now!”
The word triggered a stampede of footsteps. There were screams and shouts, running and diving. Sunset swung herself around to catch sight of what was going on. However, she was instead met with five silhouettes diving past her before the door slammed itself shut, cutting off all light, and vision, from Sunset’s eyes.
Sunset could still hear the muffled screeching of tires just beyond the door, followed by a loud crash. After a couple seconds of silence, there came another roar from the vehicle’s engine and a blaring screech from the car’s wheels. Though this time, it grew quieter instead of louder.
Just a few moments later and all sounds had ceased. The air fell deathly silent, enabling Sunset to hear the beating of her own heart and the sound of her own breathing.
Without warning, a bright light eliminated the darkness and blinded Sunset temporarily. She raised her arm to shield herself from it, blinking rapidly to allow her vision to adjust. The first thing she noticed upon regaining her sight was Rainbow, groaning over her. She shot up from her seat in a moment of panic, adrenaline once more rushing through her veins.
“Rainbow!? Are you hurt! Rainbow!”
“Stop shouting, Sunset. I’m fine.” Rainbow replied with slurred words.
“Did everyone make it? Ya’ll okay?” Applejack called out.
Sunset turned her attention to the rest of the people in front of her. Though they were clearly dazed and reeling, everyone from the alley had managed to make it safely out. She gandered at her surroundings, spotting a wooden table with four chairs in what looked to be a kitchen.
“Well, I’d say make yourself at home,” the same, refined voice spoke from behind the group. “However it looks like you all have done that on your own accord.” As she sashayed to the front, Sunset could now clearly see who it was.
“Rarity?”
“Yes well, we can rule ‘concussion’ out of the list of injuries you might’ve sustained.” Rarity strutted towards one of the chairs, pulling it up and taking a seat. She was dressed in a white nightgown and her usually lustrous hair had been pulled into a messy bun.
“Oh Rarity thank you thank you!” Fluttershy pushed herself up and launched herself towards the singer. She wrapped her arms around Rarity, burying her face in her shoulder.
“Oh well, it’s quite alright dear.” Rarity gave Fluttershy a light pat on her back.
“You two know one another?” Applejack asked as she stood up.
“O-oh… w-well…”
“Yes. We are friends. I hope that isn’t a problem Detective,” Rarity answered nonchalantly, breaking the hug and pulling up a chair for Fluttershy. “So may I know why all of you were at my doorstep at three in the morning? And do not get me started on the car.”
“Well…” Pinkie started. “Twi and I followed Applejack’s trail to the alleyway when BAM! We saw meanie ol’ firehair there-” She pointed towards Sunset, who recoiled in anger.
“Firehair!?”
“Pointing a gun at Applejack! So I was like kapow! I charged at her but her crazy rainbow companion-”
“Crazy!?” Rainbow screamed.
“Tackled me! Then there was talk about gun pointing and Shadowbolts and running. I wasn’t really paying much attention. I was thinking about cookies and-”
“Wait, Shadowbolts?” Rarity’s eyebrows furrowed upon hearing that word.
“Rarity, don’t tell me you know them too?” Twilight asked.
“I did not have much of a choice.” Rarity made her way to the kitchen counter and poured herself a glass of whisky. “I deal with information and recently, I’ve been hearing murmurs about them.” She placed the bottle back down. “Though I suppose you’ve arrived at the same conclusion, Twilight? Seeing as how you’re in the same business as I am?”
Her words drew everyone’s eyes onto the reporter, who gave a blush and a cough. Twilight darted her eyes to the ground in silence as she retreated to a corner of the room.
“Well, we’re looking to stop whatever it is they’re planning!” Applejack punched her fist into her palm, a smirk drawn across her face.
“Excellent. So tell me, besides their name, how much do you know about them?” Rarity asked, taking a sip of her drink.
Applejack’s smirked vanished in an instant. She gave a cough and rubbed the back of her head lightly. “W-well, I… I ain’t sure yet.”
Rarity rolled her eyes, letting out a long, strained sigh. “How do you exactly hope to defeat an enemy you do not even know?”
“I knew this was a stupid idea.” Sunset shook her head. “And now we’re all marked for death. Hope you’re happy, Detective. You just doomed everyone you love.”
“Now wait just a second!” Applejack shouted in a panic. “Don’t ya’ll go saying that! We’ll find a way to get more info!”
“Where would we even start?” Fluttershy asked.
“Ahem.” Rarity interrupted the trio. “If I may interrupt your bickering for a second, I believe I may have an answer to that question.”
“Well?” Rainbow gestured to Rarity. “Spit it out!”
“Suri Polomare.”
“Suri?” Pinkie tapped her finger on her chin. “You mean that meanie that runs the club across yours?”
“Yes.” Rarity placed her glass on the table. “Her.”
“And why exactly would she be a lead? From all I can gather she’s just an impulsive brat.” Rainbow said with a scowl.
Sunset resisted the urge to burst out into laughter. If there’s a better example of irony, I haven’t seen it.
“That’s precisely why I think she’s a person of interest.”
Twilight thought for a second before speaking. “I… don’t follow.”
“You’ve met her, Twilight. What words would you use to describe her?” Rarity inquired, picking up the nearby cigar case.
“Impatient. Offensive. Self-centered. Remorseless…”
Geez, remind me never to get on Twilight’s bad side. Sunset thought to herself.
“So tell me.” Rarity slid a cigar out of the case. “How many of those qualities do you look for in a club manager?”
The room fell silent for a second until Applejack spoke up. “None.”
“Exactly. A club owner needs to be calm, patient and kind. The job is a year-long commitment with few vacation days and your establishment is only as good as the people willing to work for you.”
“If she’s really as bad as you say, Twilight, then I wouldn’t want to work for her,” Fluttershy spoke with her hands pressed towards her chest.
“So now we have to ask the question.” Rarity flicked her lighter open, slamming her thumb against the top to light the wick. “Why would she choose to open a club when it’s clearly something she wouldn’t be able to handle nor enjoy.” She brought the flame to the cigar in her mouth, lighting it before exhaling a breath of smoke.
“She wouldn’t.” Twilight answered, pacing around the room with her finger glued to her chin. “Unless the club is a front for…”
“A hidden business.” Sunset and Twilight said in unison. They shot each other a shocked glance which quickly melted into a smirk.
“What makes you two so confident?” Applejack leaned into a nearby wall with her arms folded.
“We did that before!” Rainbow replied proudly, pumping her chest outwards. Upon hearing her answer, Sunset sent an elbow swiftly into Rainbow’s chest, causing her to recoil in pain. “Ow! What was that for?”
“Still, that ain’t no confirmation that Suri’s part of the Shadowbolts.” Applejack shook her head. Sunset didn’t know if Applejack missed what Rainbow had said or was choosing to ignore it.
And even though Sunset was curious, she wasn’t dumb enough to look for clarification.
“Only one way to find out!” Pinkie yelled happily, her hands gripping tightly onto her camera. Sunset and the others gave a nod in agreement. All, that is, except for Applejack.
“Let us enter her club tonight and find out more about her connections.” Rarity said, taking a long draw of her cigar. Sunset watched as her eyes scanned the room, eventually landing on Applejack’s face. “Unless you have a better idea, Detective?”
Applejack shook her head. “I ain’t worried about the plan, Miss Rarity. I’m worried about the safety of the people I care about.” She darted her eyes to Fluttershy, then to Twilight and Pinkie.
“Applejack, you left ‘safety’ behind when you said their name in public.” Sunset strolled towards the kitchen counter, hands pressing firmly on the wooden top. “Now it’s a race. Either we get them first. Or...” Sunset picked up the glass of whisky, eyeing its contents. “Well, let’s not consider that part.” She lifted the cup to her lips, tilting the whiskey into her mouth.
“Well, then its settled. Meet me at Club Everfree at 8 p.m. tonight. Whether we like it or not, we’re stuck together for now.” Rarity sat back down, taking another smoke of her cigar.
“What are our chances of getting out of this alive?” Rainbow asked.
“Statistically?” Twilight spoke. “Umm, you probably don’t want to know.”
“Way to be positive,” Sunset said.
“Well, regardless,” Rarity interrupted the bickering, drawing all attention to her once more. “Let’s just hope we will still be drawing breath after settling this matter.”
“How do we do that?” Fluttershy frowned.
“At this point?” Rarity took a deep smoke, before exhaling a dense cloud. “We just hope that there’s some sort of magic that’ll keep us together and alive.”

Twilight nervously shifted her feet on the floorboard. She lifted her arm towards the door, drawing a deep breath before knocking several times. With each hit on the door, she felt her heart beat quicker and quicker, eventually halting at a racing speed.
No turning back now…
The door soon swung open and the sight at the doorway made Twilight’s heart skip. The girl- No, lady, Twilight corrected herself, that stood in front of her was dressed in a ravishing purple cocktail dress. Her purple hair was tied up into a tight bun, though a few stray locks still fell over her face.
“May I help you?” The lady asked with such confidence, Twilight wondered if she somehow managed to steal some of her own.
“Y-yes, I-I’m Twilight Sparkle.” Twilight lifted her right hand to push her glasses upwards. “I-I called earlier? I’m the reporter, that… that well…” She darted her gaze down to the floor and started tapping on the thick blue folder in her hands.
“Ah yes of course,” the woman spoke with an unimpressed expression. “Please, come in.” She stepped aside and allowed Twilight to take a step into her dressing room.
Twilight entered practically shaking from head to toe. And she knew it wasn’t because of the chilly weather. Glancing to the middle of the room, she noticed two large, cushioned chairs had already been placed facing each other. In between them stood a coffee table with two cups on top, filled with what Twilight could only assume was coffee.
The lady took her seat, gesturing towards the chair in front Twilight. “Please, take a seat.”
“Y-yes. Of course.” Twilight scrambled to sit herself down, making sure the folder was held securely in her palm.
“So, you said you’d like to interview me?”
“Well, a-actually Miss Rarity-”
“Rarity is fine.” The lady interjected.
“R-right. Rarity, I said I’d like to ask you a few questions,” Twilight stammered. Every few seconds, she would have to remind herself to breathe, so as to not pass out from the nerves that were wracking her body.
“Well, please proceed,” Rarity reached forth and grabbed her cup before lifting it to her lips.
“W-well, first off,” Twilight whipped out a tiny notepad and retrieved the pencil that was behind her right ear. “I was wondering if you had any comments about the incident on the Ponyville Pier last night?”
Rarity chuckled softly. “I’m a singer dearie. Why would I know anything about the incident at Ponyville Pier? And why would I care?”
Twilight scribbled something in her notepad, a frown crossing her face. “You’d care a lot. Especially if the two girls involved in that shooting happen to be your friends?” She darted her eyes up to meet Rarity’s gaze.
Rarity’s mouth grew into a tiny, playful smirk. “Twilight Sparkle, the only friends I have in this club are several audience members. And I assure you the only ‘shooting’ they would do is with a camera.” Lifting the cup to her mouth, she gave a sip of her beverage, shutting her eyes softly as she did so.
“Is that so?” Twilight penned something in her notepad once again. She then reached into her folder, pulling out a tiny pearl.
With a flick of her wrist, she shot the pearl across the coffee table towards Rarity, who caught it effortlessly. Lifting it to her eye, Rarity shrugged. “Are you trying to bribe me?”
“No, I could never afford your bribes. But I found that at the pier, dropped onto the floor among a bunch of debris.” Twilight felt her confidence levels rising rapidly, crushing any semblance of nerves she might have had. “I managed to find the shop that sold this extremely pricey piece. And well, they directed me to the only buyer of this piece: you.” Twilight noticed a tinge of shock in Rarity’s eyes, so she quickly continued, “don’t worry. The only person that knows about this is me. Not even my partner knows.”
Rarity placed the pearl gingerly on the counter. “So then, allow me to ask you a question. What is it that you want?”
“Information,” Twilight answered without a moment’s hesitation. The answer drew a snicker from Rarity.
“As you’ve so clearly described for me, I don’t think you can afford the information I can provide.” Rarity lifted a lit cigar from a nearby ashtray. “And don’t you even think about trying to blackmail me with that tiny piece of evidence of yours.”
“I wasn’t planning to. And while I might not be able to afford it, I can offer something equal in return.”
“A trade?” Rarity scoffed, resisting the urge to laugh even more. “Darling, my sources are top notch. There will be nothing you can provide that I don’t already know.”
“I don’t agree.” Twilight smirked, pulling out an orange piece of paper from her folder. “Tell me, you must be interested in the opening of Suri’s club across the street aren’t you?”
Rarity’s eyes widened in shock, but she remained silent as she took a draw of the cigar. As she did, her eyes locked squarely onto Twilight’s purple pupils.
“Another club means more competition. And you must be worried that business will be affected. That your audience will be affected.”
Rarity raised her eyebrows as she exhaled a cloud of smoke into the air.
“I heard.” Twilight coughed, waving the smoke from her face. Trying to unerve me? Going to have to do better than that. She continued. “I heard that the opening day is supposed to be something special.” She gave a knowing smile to Rarity, who returned a smaller one in kind. “Do you know the date?”
“Next tuesday,” Rarity gave an arrogant grin. “I told you, my sources are top. Notch.”
“Not good enough it appears.” The words drew a glare from Rarity, one of both anger and curiosity. Twilight felt a chill run down her spine but swiftly steeled herself. She knew that if she were to show even a slight weakness now, she would get eaten up by the lady seated across her. “You see Rarity, you may have unofficial sources, which are great for underground meddling, but you need someone that has connections legally. Someone that can get things none of your criminal friends can.” She placed the orange paper on the table. “I know people you don’t. I know things you don’t.” With a swipe of her palm, the paper glided across the wooden table and stopped just in front of Rarity.
Rarity picked up the piece, flipping it over to reveal a promotional brochure.
‘Come for the official opening of Suri Polomare’s Club! Official opening: Tomorrow Night, 6pm! Free drinks and performances!
NOTE: Please keep this brochure secret, it will be your entry for that night! Do not, under any circumstances, share this information with non-invitees. Uncooperative members will be severely dealt with.’
Rarity lowered the paper in shock and slowly, a smile started to appear on her face. It was clear to Twilight what the expression meant.
It meant that Rarity was impressed.
“My my, this could be interesting after all. Very well. Now you have the one thing a lot of people seek from me but few get.” Rarity took another smoke from the cigar.
“Which is?”
Rarity exhaled a ring of smoke. “My attention.”
Silence enveloped the room, the only sound being the pitter-patter of the rain against the window. “So what do you want to know?” Rarity asked.
Twilight smiled wide, ripping off the page of the notepad she had been scribbling on and passing it to Rarity. An address and number appeared to be written on it, along with several short words such as ‘Jar’ and ‘Bullet’.
“You’ll know soon enough.” Twilight lifted the cup off the table, preparing to take a sip of the beverage.
“Well, a toast.” Rarity raised her cup, prompting Twilight to do the same. They lightly knocked their glasses together, sending a soft ‘clink’ echoing with the sound of rain on the window.
Twilight placed the cup to her lip and took a heavy sip. She was immediately hit with a strong bitter flavor, causing her to splutter. That is not coffee. Not just coffee anyway.
“Not a liquor drinker I presume?” Rarity furrowed her eyebrows in concern.
“N-nope. Never cared for it.” Twilight placed the cup back on the table and reclined in her chair. “No offence.”
“None taken, Twilight. You know, people much tougher and with much more power than you wouldn’t dare tell me ‘no’,” Rarity spoke in a slightly proud tone. Though Twilight couldn’t tell if she meant it as a compliment or a threat.
“Well, I’m not like most other people,” Twilight explained. Only after the words had left her lips did she realize just how prideful she sounded. She worried at what Rarity’s reaction would be.
Thankfully, Rarity gave a soft giggle, even lifting her hand to her mouth to stifle the laughs. “Clearly. And that is what I like about you. You’re not as naive as you appear.”
“Looks can be deceiving.”
Rarity chuckled once more, lifting the cigar to her lips and pushing the pearl towards Twilight.
“Hm?” Twilight grabbed the pearl and lifted it to her eye. “What’s this for?”
“You said you wanted to trade didn’t you?” Rarity gestured to the orange flyer. “Keep that for when you need a… how shall I put this? A boost.”
Twilight twisted and turned the pearl under the light. As far as she could tell, it appeared no different than any other pearl she had seen. “It doesn’t look special at all.”
Rarity’s smile melted into a cunning smirk as she stared at Twilight.
“Well,” Rarity spoke in a foreboding tone. She pressed the cigar harshly into the ashtray, giving it several turns to snuff out the fire. With her eyes still locked onto the reporter across her, she continued.
"Looks can be deceiving.”

The First Act
(RECOMMEND READING SONG: https://youtu.be/chhksy7wmWY)
Rarity sat silently in the audience, eyes locked onto the man on the stage. The only sound echoing through the club were several soft mutterings. At any other time, she would have listened in on those conversations in hopes of picking up something interesting.
However, today was different.
Rarity took a draw of the cigar between her fingers and exhaled the smoke in one long breath, her gaze still locked onto the man as he took the mic.
“Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Everfree Bar!” The man spoke in a deep, rough voice. A small round of applause followed his sentence, though none came from Rarity herself. “Tonight we have our best talents lined up for your listening pleasure! Of course we have to start off strong. So I would like to invite Everfree’s own little canary up on stage. Please welcome… Rarity!”
Rarity smiled, though the expression contained little emotion, almost as if it was out of formality. She placed her cigar gingerly in the smoking tray and stood from her seat. Slowly, she made her way to the stage, making sure to sway her hips with every step she took. That movement, combined with the seductively flowing purple dress she wore drew every pair of eyes onto her and silenced the scattered murmurs.
Exactly as Rarity had planned.
Soon, she found herself in front of the Everfree crowd, her band right behind her. Leaning into the microphone, she whispered softly into it, “I do hope you’re enjoying the performance. And before one of you embarrasses yourself by shouting that I haven’t started to perform…” Rarity paused, taking a glance at the crowd that sat in front of her. “Understand that a true performer doesn’t start performing when she gets up on stage. She starts themoment she stands.”
No one in the club dared to even draw a breath.
“Now that I have your attention.” She turned to the musicians behind behind her. “Shall we begin?”
As if on cue, the musicians begun to play a lively swing tune. Rarity waited for several seconds before belting out in a smooth, silky voice.
“I didn’t know that you collected souls. Gambling fire, rolling bones. I should’ve known you would take it all. I never planned to be your voodoo doll.”
The performance continued without a hitch. Rarity sang several of her most notable hits, eventually reaching her last song. She had fully melted into her performance, drawing the full attention of every single person in the crowd. Some were so entranced by her performance that the ice in their filled whisky glass had begun to melt.
Suddenly, Rarity’s ears caught the sound of the main door opening. She darted her eyes open to spot her new admirers, determined to return to her performance. However, the two people she spotted caused her eyes to open wide in shock.
Oh no, not again.
At the entrance stood a girl dressed in a flawless suit. Atop her head sat a black trilby and just underneath sat her most defining feature; her fiery colored hair. Beside her stood what looked to be a kid, dressed in a sleeveless blue vest worn over a white shirt. However, there was one aspect of her that caused Rarity to do a double take.
It was her rainbow-colored hair.
For a second, Rarity and the fiery-haired girl locked eyes. The girl gave a subtle nod to Rarity, but the singer didn’t return the gesture. Instead, she resumed her performance, occasionally glancing to the duo as they made their way to the table closest to the stage.
———–
“Thank you for being such a captivating audience.”
The crowd erupted into loud applause. Whistling accompanied the clapping as Rarity stepped off the stage. She made her way to the duo and subtly gestured for them to follow. The two girls stood from their seats and followed Rarity to the back of the stage.
“Nice performance, Rarity,” the taller girl complemented, limping forward with the support of the kid beside her.
Rarity turned towards a hallway, strutting forth with unrefined steps. “Let us skip the formalities shall we Sunset Shimmer? What do you need this time?”
“Wow, she’s to the point,” the short, rainbow-haired kid muttered.
Rarity pushed open a door with the word ‘Rarity’ emblazoned on the front and they entered into her dressing room. Though it wasn’t the biggest room in the building, Rarity found little to complain about. It had everything she needed: a washroom, dressing table and closet. A window on the right wall also gave her a good view of the road the club was next to.
“Actually allow me to ask the more pressing question, what’s with the kid?”
“K-kid!? I’m no kid!” The rainbow-haired girl shouted in a gravely voice.
“To be fair Rarity. Rainbow Dash here is not as young as you might think,” Sunset grunted through clenched teeth as she leaned against Rainbow for support.
Rarity sighed in disappointment. “Maturity is not dependent on age, Sunset. I thought you of all people should know that.” She backed up to the dresser, planting her hands firmly on the table while still facing the duo.
“Look Rares, you can berate me another time. But for now, we need help,” Sunset urged.
“Of course you do. You know, one of these days you should drop by and say hi. It’s be a refreshing change of pace,” Rarity remarked with a coy smirk.
“Rares…”
“Very well, what is it this time? Information? Are you planning another heist on the Canterlot Bank?”
“We need a doctor,” Rainbow answered matter-of-factly.
Rarity stood in complete confusion. “Y-you do understand I’m a singer right?”
“We need to know if you know a doctor,” Rainbow explained impatiently.
“Not just any doctor. A trustworthy doctor,” Sunset added. “You know, someone that can hide our…”
“Yes yes, I understand. How bad is the injury?” Rarity inquired.
Sunset started to take off her jacket and with every movement of her arm, she grunted in pain. Once she had gotten it off, she began undoing the top button of her shirt, pulling the left side of it down to reveal several large bruises.
“O-oh dear,” Rarity gasped.
Sunset spun around, revealing two more black patches of skin.
“R-right I’ve seen quite enough. Do I want to know how you got those?”
“Great story, but.” Sunset gasped loudly as she accidentally hit one of her bruises. “I’d like to tell you another time,” she stammered as she begun to pull her garments back up. “Preferably when I’m not in pain.”
“Of course.” Rarity grabbed a pencil and a piece of paper. She swiftly scribbled something on it before folding it neatly into half. She walked forward, pushing it into Sunset’s palm. “Go to that address, it’s only a few blocks from here. Tell the vet there that Rarity sent you”
“Wait wait wait wait,” Rainbow shook her head as she spoke. “A vet? We’re not animals, Rarity.”
“You could have fooled me,” Rarity quipped, much to Rainbow’s annoyance. “I understand it’s not the same. However, that girl is skilled in her field. She might not be able to perform life saving operations but she’ll treat your injuries just fine.”
“And she’s trustworthy?” Sunset asked through pained breaths, her hand pressed against her left ribcage.
Rarity nodded confidently. “I trust her with my life.”
“Great, thanks Rarity. We-”
“Owe you one.” Both Rarity and Sunset said simultaneously and they couldn’t help but giggle.
“Well, yes I shall put it on your tab,” Rarity joked, promoting a staggered laugh from Sunset. “Go. You’ve stayed here long enough.”
“Thank you, Rarity.” Rainbow gave a small, innocent smile.
“No probl-” Rarity’s reply was halted as her ears caught an odd sound. She heard the distinct creak of the wooden floorboards in the hallway. Then silence. Person must be pretty heavy to creak the floor outside.Rarity’s mind raced so quickly time seemed to slow down around her. And all the staff here knows not to bother me after the show. Why would anyone want to find me? Unless they’re not here to find me. They’re here to find… She glanced upwards towards the duo. Immediately, she spun around and opened her dressing drawer before pulling up a pistol.
“Rari-!?”
“Shh,” Rarity interrupted Rainbow as she lobbed the weapon towards Sunset. “Listen to me. In 20 seconds that door is going to open. You’re going to point that gun at me, I’m going to scream and you two are going to jump out the window behind you and run. I’ll buy you guys a bit of time but you guys need to get out of here as fast as possible.”
Sunset nodded and attempted to lift up the gun. However, a sharp pain caused her to drop her arm back down.
“Sunset, you’re hurt…” Rainbow stuttered. Suddenly, the footsteps got louder and a loud creak echoed through the room. Without a second thought, Rainbow snatched the gun and pointed it at Rarity. Sunset opened her mouth to protest but the door swung open just as she was about to speak.
At the doorway stood a tall woman in a brown trenchcoat. It was clear from the gold badge she wore on the front that she was a detective, no doubt having followed Sunset and Rainbow to the club. Her blonde hair was tied up in a ponytail and she stood frozen for a second, as if she was trying to comprehend the scene in front of her.
“What the-” The detective attempted to speak, but Rarity suddenly gave a high pitched shriek.
Taking the cue, Rainbow grabbed Sunset and crashed out of the window with a forceful leap. Sunset barely had time to react to what was happening when she felt her body slam into the cold stone floor outside. Pain shot through her veins, freezing her in place. However, once her mind had caught up to what Rainbow had just done, she shot her eyes open in horror. Adrenaline raced through her veins, forcing her to push herself up and take a glance at Rainbow.
“Rainbow!” Sunset shook her friend roughly, noticing several small, bleeding cuts on her arm.
“Oof… t-that wasn’t so bad,” Rainbow’s legs trembled immensely as she attempted to stand.
“Rainbow that was insane. Don’t you dare do something like this again,” Sunset spoke in a deathly serious tone. Once Rainbow had gotten to her feet, she gave Sunset a wide, confident smile.
“C-come on, let’s get to the doc.” Rainbow stumbled forth, a deep concern growing in Sunset with each passing second. “And hey, at least we’ll get our money’s worth.”
———-
The detective attempted to sprint to the window but she was swiftly stopped by a tug on her sleeve.
“Don’t go Detective. They’re much too dangerous,” Rarity coaxed, tugging softly on the trenchcoat.
“I appreciate your concern, ma’am, but I’m a trained professional. Please step back,” she spoke in a calm yet commanding voice.
“Very well detective.” Rarity lightly released her grip on the sleeve. The detective sprinted forth to the window and glanced out.
“Dammit.” She huffed. “They’re already gone.” She turned around and approached Rarity, who had deeply worried look on her face. “You hurt ma’am?”
“No, thankfully you arrived just in time before those ruffians could pull the trigger.” She sighed. “I apologize if I interfered. I was just so worried about your safety,” Rarity placed both of her hands tenderly on the detective’s arm.
“It’s okay ma’am.” The detective gave one confident nod.
“Call me Rarity.”
“Detective Applejack,” she whipped out a badge from her coat, flashing the shining symbol to the singer. “Would it be alright if I ask you a couple of questions about the two fugitives that just escaped?”
“Certainly not. But would it be alright if we do it over a drink?” Rarity swung her arms around Applejack’s broad shoulders, her mouth drawn up to a seductive smirk.
“Thanks for the offer ma’am, that’s mighty kind of ya.” Applejack smiled softly, giving a small tip of her hat. “but I’m on a case. Can’t drink.”
“Oh what a shame. I earned quite a bit today and was hoping I’d be able to share it with you.” Rarity pulled away, a fake frown on her face. “Well sit tight Miss Applejack. I shall be right back, lady’s promise.”
Applejack could only watch as Rarity sashayed out of the door. She attempted to reason with herself that Rarity wasn’t drop dead beautiful. However, she never could accept lying, even if it was only in her head.
Applejack tapped her pocket, wondering if she could get a drink of her own. Hm? She checked the pocket of her trenchcoat, then the back pocket of her jeans. A sigh escaped her lips and her mind raced to wonder.
Now where did my wallet go?
