Between Two Worlds, Jacob Lewis Gallery, 521 West 26th Street, 4th Floor
June 12, 2015—July 18, 2015
Jacob has a really nice group show going on right now. A couple of the artists that stood out for me the most were Dean Sameshima and Dani Tull’s pieces.
Dean’s work has an unexpected juxtaposition with childlike connecting the dots revealing a pornagraphic image.
Dean Sameshima
Dani’s piece has this fun combination of the graphic patterned background, pop art lips and fangs parted to reveal an almost cheesy 70′s sunset image. Plus I love the name of this one “Feeder (houndstooth)”.

✨🌜#InBetweenDays🌛✨ Dean Sameshima intimates a sense of privatized loss: an absent body, an empty space, thwarted desire. But in successive repetition, the images extend beyond the missing persons or even the unspoken voyeur, to address loss not as an individual but as a collective process. Tousled bed sheets suggest not only the departure but also the imminent arrival of bodies, and in turn, transform thwarted desires into desirous anticipations. 𝘐𝘯 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴, this, offers a counterintuitive understanding of lost bodies, spaces, and ideals by configuring absence as a potential presence. Dean Sameshima’s 𝘐𝘯 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴 (𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶) is a series of fifteen eight-by-ten color photographs, laid out like a calendrical sequence, of empty twin beds in the corner of a small room. Each photo directs a spotlight of a different color – a harvest orange, a blood red – foregrounding the empty beds against dark, inconspicuous backgrounds. From a distance, the uniform composition, the stark white mat and austere black frame, all placed neatly in a horizontal row, creates a semblance of symmetry: only color distinguishes each individual photograph. But such symmetry doesn’t lead to abstraction; rather, the series of rumpled beds evokes domesticity, encapsulates the ‘private’ & conjures tranquil bodies in repose. Coming in closer, we see more clearly: these beds have been used, slept in, lain on, untucked. They evoke an ambiguous sense of longing and loss. The presence of human bodies is absent from the scene, yet their absence is palpable. Considered in isolation, Sameshima’s pictures of empty beds flooded in different colors and light endeavor to address loss not only as an individual and isolated process, but also as a collective one, through a kind of performative transference that reinvests the lost object into the social, public sphere. Sameshima’s beds visually articulate mourning & melancholia as constitutive of social materiality. —Suzette Min Dean Sameshima 𝘐𝘯 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴 (𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶), 1998 Edition 2/3 +3AP Set of 15 C-type prints 8 x 10 inches, each. 🛏🥀 #deansameshima @homosexuals_anonymous (at EMPTY ROOM) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_0T7Qdld4M/?igshid=15fpi6lemj2h6
