Phoenix Suns Add Jock Landale in Trade with Atlanta Hawks
On July 6th, 2022, the Atlanta Hawks traded center Jock Landale to the Phoenix Suns for cash considerations. Atlanta also received a trade exception of $46,120.
When the Atlanta Hawks made a splashy deal to acquire All-Star Dejounte Murray from the San Antonio Spurs for Danilo Gallinari and several draft picks, an attachment to the deal was the Hawks taking on the minimum, non-guaranteed salary of center Jock Landale.
To make the math in the trade work, the Spurs guaranteed $46,120 of Landale’s salary in addition to Murray’s $15 million-plus salary to get within $5 million of Gallinari’s $20 million-plus salary.
Looking to offload Landale, the Hawks subsequently moved the Aussie center to the Phoenix Suns about a week later. Facing a luxury tax bill, the Suns were looking for some cheap help to add to a roster that was becoming expensive.
The Landale move created a trade exception worth a minuscule $46,120. Atlanta also received an undisclosed sum of cash in the deal. The Athletic’s John Hollinger believed it was $110,000, the minimum sum a team can send in a deal.
Landale joined a Suns frontcourt that already had Deandre Ayton starting at center. Reserves Bismack Biyombo and Dario Šarić were also expected to receive minutes at the five.
The 2022-23 season was a year of calamity for Phoenix. First, the Suns decided to not bring back Jae Crowder, sending the veteran starter home while searching for a trade.
Phoenix won six of its first seven games and were at the top of the West after 21 games with a 15-6 record. However, injuries began to pile up. Starter Cam Johnson tore the meniscus in his right knee in early November. Hamstring and groin injuries caused star Devin Booker to miss 26 of 29 games.
Injuries to starters Chris Paul and Ayton also creeped up. Phoenix went through a 2-12 stretch in December and January that dropped the team to 21-24. Soon after, the Suns rebounded, going 9-2 to rise to 30-26.
As all this happened, the Suns were bought by a new owner, Mat Ishbia. The new owner’s big splash was dealing Crowder, Johnson, Mikal Bridges and several draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets in a deal for star Kevin Durant.
The move added Durant to Phoenix’s core of Booker, Paul and Ayton. Durant missed some time with knee and ankle injuries as Phoenix finished the season in fourth place with a 45-37 record.
Landale was a revelation during training camp. In preseason, he averaged 13.3 PPG and 6.8 RPG in 22.2 MPG. This included a 17-point, 8-rebound, 4-block, 3-steal night.
youtube
The performance earned Landale some minutes at the start of the season and he played well initially, scoring well in the paint and in the pick-and-roll.
However, his limitations as a rim protector and outside shooter caused his minutes to yoyo throughout the season as coach Monty Williams preferred at times to play the more mobile and active defender in Biyombo.
Still, Landale had a strong second season in the NBA, playing in 69 games and producing career-highs of 6.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG and 1.0 APG in 14.2 MPG. When Landale was on the floor, Phoenix outscored opponents by 7.9 points per 100 possessions per NBA Stats.
The Suns entered the postseason as a favorite for the NBA championship though there were concerns with Durant having only played eight games with Suns after the midseason trade.
Phoenix matched up with the Los Angeles Clippers in the opening round. One of Los Angeles’ stars Paul George was out with a knee injury. His co-star Kawhi Leonard stepped up, scoring 38 points as the Clippers took the first game 115-110 in Game One.
The Suns responded with a 123-109 win in Game Two. Leonard was revealed to have a sprained MCL and missed the rest of the series. Two of the next three games were decided by single digits, but Phoenix won all of those games to win the series 4-1. Landale played just one game and eight minutes in the series.
Phoenix advanced to the second round where the team faced the number one seed Denver Nuggets. Denver’s Jamal Murray had 34 points and the Nuggets made nine more threes in a 125-107 win.
Two-time MVP Nikola Jokić dominated Game Two, recording 39 points and 16 rebounds. Phoenix had a lead in the second half. With the Suns up 73-70 with about 10 minutes left, Denver went on a 27-14 run to win 97-87. In the loss, Paul suffered a left groin injury that would cause him to miss the rest of the series.
With Paul out and Ayton ineffective, Booker and Durant stepped up in Phoenix. The duo combined for 86 points as Phoenix outlasted the Nuggets 121-114. Booker was particularly effective with 47 points.
In Game Four, the Suns led for all of the fourth quarter. Jokić was phenomenal with 53 points. Durant and Booker both put up 36 points and they got help from reserve Landry Shamet who had 19 points and five threes.
Landale saw an uptick in minutes in Games Three and Four as Ayton struggled and was a plus-26 combined in those two games. He closed Game Four with Ayton on the bench.
youtube
Game Five saw the Nuggets jump out to a 11-point edge in the first quarter. Phoenix battled back. Denver built a 17-point at the end of the third period and held on for an easy 118-102 win. Game Six was even easier as the Nuggets built a 30-point lead in the first half and held on for a 125-100 rout to eliminate Phoenix.
Landale started the final game of the series due to an Ayton injury. He appeared in all six games and managed 6.5 PPG on 67% from the field and 4.3 RPG in 17.6 MPG.
After the season, the Suns made moves to keep pushing towards title contention. The team traded Paul and Shamet to the Washington Wizards in a deal for star guard Bradley Beal. Suns head coach Monty Williams was also let go and replaced by Frank Vogel.
The team first extended a qualifying offer to Landale but ultimately pulled it, making him an unrestricted free agent. Landale later signed a four-year, $32 million deal with the Houston Rockets.
Jock Landale on his style of basketball in Suns training camp (via Cronkite News):
“For me, I play such a high intensity brand of basketball, and that is what I am going to do. It is all the same thing for me compared to prior seasons like setting hard screens, roll, pop and do (the) little things as best as I can.”
Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams on Landale during training camp (via Cronkite News):
“He does a good job of keeping his big in front of him but also dealing with the ball and then being able to go up and distract the shot. That’s a skill that we lost in JaVale [McGee] and now we feel like we have some similarities in Jock.”

These NBA Round 1 Playoff Matchups Are Must-See TV
1. Los Angeles Clippers vs Phoenix Suns
Really this one hinges on how healthy Paul George will be but with the timelines that have been given, there is every chance he will be back for the 1st round.
This series has the potential to be the most exciting of anything on this list and there’s a couple of reasons for that.
Not only is there the prospect of Kevin Durant, Chris Paul and Devin Booker, playing against Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Russell Westbrook, but you can bet on a very special competetive atmosphere because most of the star players are over the age of 30 and playoff opportunities are at a premium now.
Niether team has really had an ideal season and niether of them have really had their best players on the court together for a significant stretch, so watch the turnover count in these games.
Expect some very interesting adjustments from the coaches because every timeout will add a note of intrigue when Tyronn Lue and Monty Wiliams start making thier adjustments.
It really isn’t healthy to bet or try to predict a winner for this series, so whoever is healthiest is the favorite, but I think the boggets mismatch of any player on either team will be Deandre Ayton and I don’t think the Clippers have answers for him.
Give me the Suns in 7.
2. Golden State Warriors vs Sacremento Kings
The Sacremento Kings are in the NBA playoffs for the first time in 21 years.
For as good as that narrative is, and as well deserved as their playoff appearance is, a series against the defending champions in the 1st round.
For what it’s worth the Warriors limp into this 1st round on the back of what looked like it would be the worst season by a defending NBA champion in history.
The Kings are the number 1 offense in the regular season and at 25 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds per game, De’Aaron Fox is the great hope leading the Kings resurgence and ending a dark period of Sacremento basketball history of bad draft picks. Next to him is dribble-hand-off master, Donantas Sabonis, veteran shooter Harrison Barnes and my old nemesis, Kevin Huerter.
While the Kings are statistically the best offense in the NBA, the great achillies heel with young teams is typically thier defense, and that’s where I think the Warriors can turn the series.
Former NBA Allstar and full time knucklehead, Gilbert Arenas had some interesting observations regarding how the crowd would be split in each game of the series, noting how the Warriors fans would takeover Sacremento’s arena, and he could very well be right.
Yet another very hard series to pick and the Kings are so unproven that I have to go with the Warriors but I will be rooting HARD for the Kings in this one.
Prediction: Warriors in 7.
3. Los Angeles Lakers vs Memphis Grizzlies
I am no fan, advocate, admirer or kin to any Laker or thier fans, but the quality of this post season is greatly improved by the presence of LeBron James, and that’s just objective facts and the idea that they have been paired with the flavor-of-the-month, Memphis Grizzlies, is even better for neutrals.
The Memphis Grizzlies are not a great 3-point shooting team and that along with Steven Adam’s injury, will likely make this a far more even series than what it looks like on paper.
This is going to come down to 2 teams doing most of thier scoring at the rim and if either team can have a hot 3-point shooting night it will be a bonus and also an anomaly.
Despite the difference in the team’s regular season records, it’s a much closer series than anyone wants to admit, and go ahead and call my crazy but I am picking Los Angeles to win in 7 games.
Dillon Brooks and the Memphis Grizzlies might feel different about the series, but I don’t think a team with 0 rim protectors is going to be able to overcome LeBron and Anthony Davis.
Lakers in 7.

Kevin Durant, Returns from injury, scores 23 in winning Suns debut
Charlotte, N.C. -- It was at All-Star Weekend 2019 that Kevin Durant solidified his decision to join forces together with Kyrie Irving as both players became free agents in the summer following. A few decades later, a brand new partnership was revealed in the same arena, but this one with hopes for better results.
First time playing as a part of the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night, Durant showed early signs of the devastating one-two punch he could create along with Devin Booker in the victory of 105-91 to end the Charlotte Hornets' five-game winning streak.
Durant recorded 23 points in just 27 minutes, and his jumper appeared like it was rust-free since he had been absent since January. 8 after recuperating from an MCL injury that he sustained while still playing with his team, the Brooklyn Nets.
"I feel like I fit in pretty well. Everybody out there was trying to make me as comfortable as possible," Durant declared. "I just got to keep grinding, man, and this jersey on me will look normal as games go on."
Durant's combination of playmaking with Booker left the greatest impression.
When they took to the court together, certainly they were, as Booker enjoyed a fantastic overall game, scoring 37 points as well as six rebounds and seven assists to form the type of wing-scoring duo which Durant acquired. Durant's purchase was about.
"This is one of those moments that doesn't really feel real," Booker declared. "I mean, it's just every time he shoots the ball, it's just so effortless. You can see defenders trying their hardest to contest or fight over a screen, and he just looks unbothered, unfazed."
It was only when Booker, as well as Durant, were split that the Sun's game plan for Durant and Booker became apparent.
In both periods, Durant played stretches with four bench players. each time the score was from near to double-digit Phoenix leads when he hit several of his signature mid-range jumpers. Durant finished the game with shots of 10-15.
The stretches ensured a comfortable win since the Suns did not trail and Durant finished with a plus-13 rating and was ranked second in the league.
While Durant who was on the first four six-minute shifts, and the final three minutes of his shift as part of a minute restriction was in the sitting area in the sand, the team was Booker who would take on the job, taking 15 of his 26 shots while he was working with Chris Paul, who was credited with 11 assists as per the norm.
After the minutes restriction has been lifted and Durant's participation in conjunction with Booker's increase -- as the coach Monty Williams' plan seems to be -the Suns' potential will be unleashed.
"It's just pretty cool to be able to give the guy the ball and he could get to his spot and get a really good shot," Williams stated. "I thought the team fed off of him just being himself tonight."
The game on Wednesday night wasn't without blemishes but it was a good game. The potential for top-heavy scoring of the Suns scoring have already shown up when only one athlete, Deandre Ayton who was in double figures, scoring 16 points.
Paul who has had an unfavorable shooting season suffered another poor shooting night shooting just 1-of-8. Josh Okogie, who was able to keep his spot as a starter after scoring 18.5 points in a more energized role after the Durant trade and scored four points.
The Suns have also suggested that getting to the foul line could be a challenge in the past with three players that specialize in mid-range shots. The Hornets were without the star LaMelo Ball after LaMelo Ball had a broken ankle earlier in the week also drew 13 free throws.
Kelly Oubre Jr. was the leading scorer in Charlotte by scoring 26 points, however, he only shot 9-of-24 while the Suns were able to hold their Hornets to 36.4 percent on the floor.
However it was a success. Durant rollout was a huge success with a planned strategy that allowed for extra training and practice time as well as the chance to play against one of the teams that are weak in the league.
However, despite that, Durant admitted he was worried.
"New environment, new situation, new teammates, I mean I always feel I got to prove myself to my teammates and my coaches every single day no matter what I've done in the league," Durant declared. "So I feel like there's pressure to be who I am every day."

Has Deandre Ayton's defense regressed?
Has Deandre Ayton’s defense regressed?
A lot of the talk about Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton has been about his point and rebound totals. The season started off with a lot of frustration, but that seems to have cooled a bit of late as the big man has gone for 20 more more points four times in the past two weeks, and collected 10 or more rebounds the same number of times. . And while some fans will (and arguably should) continue to…
