Coming to America (1988). An extremely pampered African prince travels to Queens, New York and goes undercover to find a wife that he can respect for her intelligence and strong will.

I didn't really know what to expect with this one, but man, what a delight! Just a really, really fun romantic comedy that threads joy through practically every beat. It flirts with deeper themes of tradition and wanting better for your children in a way that infringes on their agency in ways that feel authentic but never overtake the main arc of connection and coming of age. Plus the costumes are killer. Just delightful. 8/10.

The children usually entertained themselves independently with each of their respective toys; Jemima could visit her peers and Amos and Leroy typically pestered each other, however, the children could only do so much at one time and with Claudia preocuppied with her own errands and Elmer either working or sleeping - no inbetween - the family hit a block with their boredom. Naturally, Charlotte found it her duty to spoil her niece and nephews and began to show them the variety of activities Brindelton Bay, and occasionally places outside of the town, had to offer. Per Claudia's request, Charlotte also began to bake with Jemima, albeit allowing much more mess to occur than Claudia would've liked.

Although Jemima had at most dipped her feet in the pond, she was ecstatic to hear Charlotte was taking the three of them swimming in her mother's hometown: Windenburg. Due to the last minute spotaneity, Charlotte had been lended the children's costumes and though they were equally greatful, Jemima found herself deeply insecure once her marks were on display. Charlotte made sure they stayed in the shallow end and only let Amos and Leroy into the pool with her absolute supervision, but Jemima seemed a born natural and could already stay afloat where her feet could not touch the ground. She much preferred her body submerged and hidden; it was restricting but comforting all the same.

… Another surprise awaited them upon arriving at the forgotten homestead …

New years eve 1899 / 1900

Though the death of Ethel scarred Elmer and Claudia, December marked the 10 year anniversary of their wedding and they danced the night away in bliss as the children slept peacefully.

New years was the one occasion Jemima, Amos and Leroy were allowed to stay up, but as soon as the clock struck 12 they were ushered to go to sleep and celebrate the next day.

Over at the forgotten homestead, Charlotte and Diana celebrated the entire night - or morning - and they too slept like babies throughout the January afternoon.

Claudia reflected on the past decade. The 1890's changed both herself and Elmers lives, and while there were the natural bumps along the way, it all ended up being for the better. Still, she couldn't help but feel slightly worried for the 1900's - after all, it was a new century.
