DEADLY WOMEN DAILY: DIANE DOWNS
In this article you’ll learn about a woman who loved her lover more than she loved her own children, so much to the point of murdering them in order to secure him in her life forever.
WHO WAS DIANE DOWNS?
Diane Downs was born on August 7th, 1955, in Phoenix, Arizona. There’s not much known about her childhood, outside of graduating from Moon Valley High School, where she met her future husband, Steve Downs. After graduating the couple broke up as she enrolled herself into Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College in Orange, California. However, her enrollment there was short lived, as she was expelled after her first year due to promiscuous behavior, and returned back to her parents home, and continued her relationship with Steve. Diane would also later testify that her father allegedly sexually abused her when she was 12, while her mother knew about it and yet portrayed themselves as a conservative family. She ran away from home at 18 years old and got married to Steve on November 13th, 1973.
In 1974, they had their first child, Christie Ann. Another baby girl, Cheryl Lynn, followed in 1976, and Stephen Daniel (nicknamed Danny) in 1979. Their marriage began to crumble as the couple constantly argued about finances, and Diane was accused of having multiple affairs throughout their marriage. By the time Danny was born, Steve was completely convinced that Danny wasn’t his biological child, and divorced in 1980. Diane needed the extra money and really wanted to become a surrogate, however, there’s conflicting reports about what happened with that. Some sources claim that she was declined twice due to failing her psychiatric tests, while other sources claim that she had been accepted and given birth to a baby girl on May 8th, 1982, which she named Jennifer before terminating her parental rights.
Diane soon fell into a depression and started to severely neglect her children. The children consistently appeared dirty and unkept, and very malnourished. She would often go out and leave Christie, who was 6 years old at the time, home alone and in charge of the other children. Diane’s spirits would soon go up in 1981, after meeting her new lover, Robert Knickerbocker. Robert was married and the two started up an affair, however things began to sour after he told her that he could never leave his wife for her due to her having children and not wanting to be a father, and the affair ended.
THE SHOOTINGS
In April 1983, took her children and moved to Springfield, Oregon, and began working as a postal worker. She wanted to start a new life, however, her plan was nothing but sinister. She wanted Robert, and she intended to get him back, and would do anything to win back his love, even if it meant murdering her own children. On May 19th, 1983, her plan was put into motion. She took her .22 caliber pistol and loaded her children into the car and drove down Old Mohawk Road, pulled over, and shot each of her children. She then took her gun and shot herself in the forearm to make it look more believable that she had been attacked. Diane then began driving to the McKenzie-Willamette hospital, but she certainly wasn’t in any hurry, as a witness stated that she couldn’t have been going more than 5MPH.
When they arrived at the hospital, Cheryl, 7, was pronounced dead, and Danny, 3, was paralyzed from the waist down. Christie, 8, suffered a terrible stroke, but doctors were thankfully able to save her life. Diane was also being treated at the time for the gunshot wound in her forearm, but hospital staff soon became suspicious of her, and investigators weren’t buying her story. She claimed that she had been carjacked by a man on Rural Road and shot her and the children when she refused to give him her car. Initially she became suspicious due to her overly calm and collected demeanor, considering she had just lived through an extremely traumatic event and had lost a child while the others were fighting to stay alive. She had also made a number of inappropriate statements, although what those statements were are unknown.
Diane was discharged and returned to visit her children, and that’s when things really became clear that she was most likely lying about her story. When she returned to the hospital she called her former lover, Robert Knickerboxer, who still lived in Arizona with his wife. Robert would later tell police that Diane had stalked him, and acted like she’d be willing to murder his wife if that’s what she had to do to be with him. He was very relieved when she had left Oregon, and was even able to reconcile with his wife, and had absolutely no interest in speaking to her again. Hospital staff also found it strange that Christie’s heart rate went up and looked scared when she saw her mother walk into her room to see her. Due to the stroke, she wasn’t able to speak, and it took months before she’d be able to fully speak again.
The forensic evidence also didn’t match up with Diane’s story; there was no gunpowder residue on the drivers door or on the interior door panel, and there wasn’t any blood splatter on the drivers side door either. She told police that she didn’t own a gun, but Steve and Robert both told police that she did. Investigators discovered that bought the gun in Arizona, and even though they were never able to locate the gun, they found unfired casings in her home, along with extractor markings from the murder weapon. She also claimed that she had rushed to the hospital at a high speed, even though witnesses have stated she was driving extremely slow.
TRIAL AND SENTENCING
Investigators have been piling up evidence for nine months before they were finally able to get the biggest source of evidence to make an arrest: Christie’s statement. Once Christie was able to regain her speech, she was asked who shot her. The poor young girl simply said, “my mom.” Diane was arrested on February 28th, 1984. She was evaluated by psychiatrists before her trial, being diagnosed with narcissism, Histrionic Personality Disorder, antisocial personality disorders, and was labeled as a “deviant” sociopath. Prosecutors argued that she planned to murder her children so she could be relieved of their burden, and to win back the affection of her former lover, as he claimed he did not want children. Even though they had so much evidence against her, most of the weight was in Christie’s statement. Christie took the stand and described how her mother parked on the side of the road, took out her gun, and began shooting at her and her siblings, and then shot herself in the arm.
On June 17th, 1984, Diane was convicted on one count of murder, and two counts each of attempted murder and criminal assault. Prior to her arrest, Diane became pregnant with her 5th child and gave birth to a girl, who she named Amy Elizabeth, a month after her trial. Ten days before her sentencing, Amy was taken by the State of Oregon, and put up for adoption. Diane was sentenced to life in prison, plus 50 years, and was required to serve 25 years before having a possibility of parole. The judge made it clear that he did not intend for her to ever walk free again.
Diane briefly escaped prison in 1987 for ten days, but was recaptured. She was denied parole in 2008, 2010, and in 2020. Her earliest possible release would be in 2025, but it’s highly unlikely she will ever be released. She is currently 67 years old.
AFTERMATH FOR THE SURVIVING CHILDREN
Cheryl and Danny both went off to live with the lead prosecutor of the case, Fred Hugi, and were adopted by him and his wife, Joanne, in 1986. Amy Elizabeth was adopted by Chris and Jackie Babcock, and renamed her Rebecca. Rebecca appeared on ABC’s 20/20, and The Oprah Winfrey Show, where she discussed how she felt about her biological mother. Rebecca went public about her mother in 2010, and also met her in a bid to find out about her roots. Christie, who still suffers from a speech disability, is happily married and has two children, a son, and a daughter, who she named Cheryl, in memory of her sister.

I spoke about Heather Mack in another podcast episode and how her boyfriend and her stuffed her mother’s body in a suitcase. What about someone being cut into pieces and placed into three suitcases. This is what happened in 2004. William McGuire was murdered and then scattered into three suitcases that were found in Virginia Beach. Who would do something like that? We can ask his wife, Melanie McGuire. DEADLY WOMEN DAILY: LEONARDA CIANCIULLI
Meet Leonarda Cianciulli. This woman has a story to tell, and it’s a wild ride. Her life story makes you wonder if people could truly see the future, and if dark magic really exists. Is dark magic really the reason her life turned out the way it did? Or was this outcome of life just destined to be hers, without any curses at all? Was she just insane, and a victim of abuse and poor mental health? Or was she simply a monster, waiting for a reason to kill? That’s for you to decide. Let’s begin with her story.
Leonarda was born in 1894 and raised in Montella, Avellino, Kingdom of Italy. From the very beginning she was plagued with unfortunate life circumstances. She was born as a product of rape, and her mother was forced to marry her rapist. This naturally made her mother somewhat resentful towards Leonarda, and over time her mother became more and more emotionally abusive. If that’s not bad enough, her father died when she was very young, and they lived in poverty. Shortly after her father passed away, her mother remarried, but still struggled financially. She grew up a very depressed young girl, and attempted to commit suicide on two separate occassions.
Leonarda started having an interest in astrology, fortune telling, and palm reading at a young age, and these beliefs only got stronger as she aged into adulthood. One day she decided to visit a fortune teller, and she was told that she was going to get married, and have a lot of children… But they would all die at a young age. This began her paranoia. Afterwards, she visited a palm reader. The lady told Leonarda that she saw a prison in her right hand, and an asylum in her left hand. Naturally, she had no idea why those things could possibly be in her future. Eventually, she met a man and fell in love, and she wanted to marry him. This really angered her parents, as they have already found a suiter for her, who was a wealthy man. But Leonarda didn’t want to marry for wealth, she wanted to marry for love, and that’s what she did. However, on the day of their wedding in 1917 Leonarda became very paranoid and claimed that her mother put a dark curse on her and her husband, due to how much she disapproved of their union. She stuck to this claim for the rest of her life, and honestly… Things do go downhill severely for poor Leonarda after this.
She and her husband end up moving to Lauria, which in modern times was located in the province of Potenza, and in 1927 she was arrested and sent to prison for committing fraud. After she was released from prison, they relocated to Lacedonia, where their home was later destroyed by an earthquake. Then finally they relocated to Correggio, where they’d officially settle down. Leonarda loved to make soap and opened up her own soap shop, which flourished! She was a very well respected woman in her community, and everyone seemed to really love her. As a side business, she was also a fortune teller. She ended up having 17 pregnancies, three of them ending up in miscarriages, and ten children dying during their childhood. She became extremely protective over her four remaining children. What happens next is what leads to Leonardas decision to start her killing spree.
In 1939 World War II had started, and Leonarda found out that her oldest and most favored child, Giuseppe, was joining the Italian Army in preparations for the war. She was so paranoid, and terrified, of her son dying in war, she had to come up with a way to keep him safe… and she did. Human sacrifice. That was apparently the most logical way for her to ensure his safety. So she wasted no time getting down to business, and she ended up murdering three of her clients who visited her for fortune telling. Faustina Setti, who went to Leonarda for help regarding finding her a husband, Francesca Soavi and Virginia Cacioppo, who were both looking for work, would all be tricked and killed by someone who they thought of as a trusted friend. How Leonarda killed these women and what she did with their remains will most likely make your stomach sick. Leonarda made her victims into bars of soap, and teacakes. She let all these women into her home, gave them wine which she had previously drugged, and once they were unconscious she dragged them into her closet, killed them with an ax, and chopped their bodies into nine pieces. She claimed to have put the pieces of their bodies into a pot, added seven kitos of caustic soda, and mixed it until the mixture turned into a thick dark mush. Then she poured it into multiple buckets and disposed of it in a nearby septic tank. For the blood in the basin, she let it caugulate before putting it in the oven, grinding it, mixing it with flour, milk, chocolate, eggs, sugar, and margarine to make teacakes. She gave a lot of these teacakes to the women who visited her, and the rest were eaten by Giuseppe and herself. She also allegedly received large payments before their deaths, for the “help” she gave them. Leonarda gave a very chilling explanation of what happened with Virginia’s body. “She ended up in the pot, like the other two… her flesh was fat and white, when it had melted I added a bottle of cologne, and after a long time on the boil I was able to make some most acceptable creamy soap. I gave bars to the neighbors and acquaintances. The cakes, too, were better: That woman was really sweet.”
But how did she get caught? Well, she messed up. With the first two victims she specifically told them to write postcards to all their friends and family about where they’re going to be traveling to for their new husband and job, and to not tell anyone about where they were receiving this help from. Honestly, this all sounds super sketchy to me, but I guess back in the day, no one really thought things like this could happen, especially by someone they trusted so much. However, she failed to inform Virginia to do this, and Virginia had a cousin who was growing suspicious of her sudden disappearance, and went to the police and informed them that the last place she saw her cousin was at Leonarda’s home. The police automatically arrested her and put together an investigation. At first she denied every having taken part in any murders, until they started throwing suspicion on her son, Giuseppe. After that, she came clean about everything. She was found guilty of all three murders, and was sentenced to thirty years in prison. She was also forced to spend three years in a criminal asylum. The fortune teller she saw, and the palm reader were all accurate in their predictions.
She passed away in 1970 in the women's criminal asylum, located in Pozzuoli. She was suffering from cerebral apoplexy for a long time, and was 76 years old at the time of her death. Many of the items from her case, including the pot that she boiled her victims remains in, are now located in the Criminal Museum in Rome.
