Vibal Foundation and The Office of the Dean, UP College of Arts and Letters (CAL) will launch ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐๐ญ๐ก-๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ: ๐๐ข๐ญ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ (๐๐๐๐โ๐๐๐๐) by Soledad Reyes on Wednesday, 23 October 2024, 3:00-5:00 p.m., at Palma Hall, Pavilion 1, Room 1131 (Roces corner Quirino Streets), UP Diliman. The novels presented in this book are not just mere reenactments of critical historical moments but magnificent works that show the storytelling brilliance and personal interpretations of the novelists about certain vital events in the countryโs history. De La Salle University Professor of Literature David Jonathan Bayot wrote the foreword to ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐๐ญ๐ก-๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ: ๐๐ข๐ญ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ (๐๐๐๐-๐๐๐๐).
The launch marks the return of Ateneo de Manila University Professor Emerita Reyes to UP Diliman, where she earned her Ph.D (Philippine Studies). During the launch, she will formally donate books from her collection on literary history, literary criticism, popular culture, and Philippine Literature to her alma mater. CAL Dean Jimmuel Naval will receive the books. After which, short presentations on the works and legacy of Dr. Reyes will be presented by Palanca-winning poet Louie Jon Sรกnchez and 2023 UMPIL Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas recipient D.M. Reyes. Sanchez teaches Media Arts and Studies at the UP College of Mass Communication, while Reyes teaches Literature at CALโs Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas and Department of English and Comparative Literature.
Dr. Reyes also received degrees from Maryknoll College (BA), Ateneo de Manila Unversity (MA), and the University of Essex (MA). She was Chair of two Ateneo Departments: Kagawaran ng Filipino sa Pamantasang Ateneo de Manila (1988-1995) and the Ateneo Department of Interdisciplinary Studies (2003-2004). She also co-founded (with Dr. Edna Zapanta-Manlapaz) the Ateneo Library of Women's Writings (ALiWW) in 1994.
Her research areas include Philippine literary history, criticism, Tagalog novels, popular culture, especially komiks and films, and womenโs writing. She has published comprehensive studies on Macario Pineda, Lina Flor, and Rosario de Guzman Lingat. She also edited collections of essays on Balagtas, Rizal, Philippine popular culture, studies on women, the post-war political landscape dominated by the Aquinos, and famous actors turned politicians. She organized lecture series and books on Fr. Horacio de la Costa, Fr. Raul Bonoan, Fr. Roque Ferriols, and other Jesuit intellectuals.
She was a Visiting Professor of Philippine Literature and popular culture at Beijing University and Xiamen University. She received many awards for her groundbreaking research, including a Philippine National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle for Nobelang Tagalog 1905-1975: Tradisyon at Modernismo. She translated 15 volumes: 11 novels, three short stories, and Fr. Roque Ferriols S.J.'s memoir. She also mentored numerous creative writers, critics, scholars, and teachers.
