A/N: This is set a few weeks after The Punisher season 1. Frank never went away on his trip (or whatever he was doing at the beginning of season 2) and this is their first encounter after the hotel. I took the liberty of using and rewriting a scene from season 2 that I think it works better this way.  You’ll have to find out for yourself. I don’t wanna spoil it.

(Also- it turned out more angsty that I wanted to but it has a promising ending.)

Summary: Frank had no business showing and messing up her sting. He probably had David, the CIA or someone else track her phone because nobody knew who she was meeting and where that particular night. She almost had it in the bag too until he overstepped. It was especially annoying since he had been radio silent for weeks after that day at the hotel.

It was always a guessing game with Frank, he could be both- dead and alive, like Schrödinger's cat. That’s how he exists in Karen’s head, alas.

It was done. Her lead was dead; the goons were just as much. And so was her case now.

She came out unscathed despite the amount of blood, covering the most part of her body and clothes, pointing otherwise. 

Him was an entirely different story.

Fire escape reunion

Jessica Jones took another swig from her flask and scanned the alley below the thick soles of her boots. She wasn’t uncomfortable yet, but that was only a matter of time. She saw a figure detach from the deeper shadows behind the dumpsters and set off at an easy jog away from her fire escape perch. The dumpster diver was no concern of hers, she was being paid to watch the window across the road. There was a low rumble of conversation, some kind of scuffle perhaps, then silence – or what passed for it in the overcrowded city. Ugh, people. Far better just to watch.

A pair of combat boots casually dangled into her peripheral vision when she took a drink from her thermos. The rest of the black clad figure followed as the Devil lowered himself to a silent crouch beside her. Okay, some people were less annoying than others. At least this person brought waves of heat with him to take some of the chill out of the spring night air.

“Heard you weren’t dead.” She offered him the flask. The wrinkle of his nose under the black mask telegraphed his opinion of the cheap whiskey lacing her coffee. His distaste was not at all cute. Not at all. The jawline was as stubbled and heroic as she remembered, the lips still pouty and probably a little too red. She didn’t quite understand the narrow ropes on his hands, not much protection compared to the red gear. Still, the armour hadn’t been enough to keep him safe the last time she’d seen him in the wild, and there was a certain aesthetic value to the way the streetlight caressed the contours inside that skin-tight shirt. Jeez, the asshole was no less pretty for having a building fall on him.

“Turns out that dying is overrated.”
