The Future Of Electric Vehicle Charging: Innovations & Trends To Watch
Electric vehicle charging technology is changing so rapidly that keeping an eye on the future of EV charging has become as vital as the vehicles themselves. Large-scale EV adoption depends not only on accessible charging but also on technologically advanced charging.
Even with access to home charging, EV owners have to rely on public charging as well. It has been observed in US & China that as EV adoption increases, use of public charging stations grows exponentially.
Now lets have a look at some of the innovations & trends in the field of EV charging to look out for:
Green Charging:
As EV adoption increases in India, significant efforts will be made to integrate clean, renewable energy to power the EV charging infrastructure. The use of renewable energy will help in drastically reducing the carbon footprint of vehicles.
Wireless EV Charging:
Just like smartphones adopted wireless charging technology, electric vehicles are next in line. By deploying electromagnetic induction coils on roads & receivers underneath EVs, it is now possible to charge the EV without using a physical connection. It clears the road to charge the EV while it is being driven. Pilot programs around the world have shown the potential for the same by deploying coils under a segment of road that charge EVs that drive on top. This has tremendous potential for keeping EVs on road for much longer before they have to be stopped for recharging.
EV Roaming:
Multiple EV charging apps, memberships, RFID cards are a source of inconvenience to a lot of electric car owners. EV roaming attempts to solve this issue. With roaming, EV charging networks can communicate with each other and allow EV owners subscribed with one charging network to charge at another network in the same way mobile phone network roaming allows you to use your phone on different networks. EV roaming functionality has two execution paths:
Direct agreements between EV charging networks.
Universal adoption of the open charge point interface (OCPI). OCPI allows hardware & software of different charging networks to communicate & allow automated transactions between networks without pre-existing agreements.
Smart Charging:
Widespread adoption of smart charging approach, such as off-peak charging, green energy integration, etc will help optimize the use of energy resources, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and make EV charging more affordable. Smart charging will also make the power grid more efficient and integrate clean energy thereby increasing ecological benefits.
Kerbside (or Curbside) Charging:
There are many factors that shape the need for EV charging infrastructure and the type of charging infrastructure.
Kerbside pole-mounted EV chargers are more compact than large EV charging stations set-up at off-street parking areas. Curbside charging will substantially increase the number of locations where EV users can charge their vehicles. Mounting EV chargers on existing poles can save on installation costs. This type of EV charging is an upcoming arena for EV charger manufacturers & charge point operators (CPOs). Curbside chargers are less expensive that regular public EV charging stations as it saves up on real estate, hardware & installation costs.
Megawatt Charging:
The main aim of fast EV charging is to minimize vehicle downtime. At present, DC charging technology allows EVs to charge rapidly in around 15-45 minutes. Unfortunately, this isn’t fast enough when it comes to medium & heavy-duty EVs. Longer charging times & vehicle downtimes are big barriers to electric truck adoption. Currently, a long-haul electric truck takes around 4 hours while charging at today’s high-capacity DC EV charging stations.
But there is a solution to this. And it is known as Megawatt Charging System (MCS). Megawatt charging is the future of EV charging for heavy-duty EVs. It allows large commercial electric trucks to charge up to 80% in just a few minutes!
Conclusion:
Longer times taken to charge EVs are a big irritant for EV owners, but there are multiple solutions being developed to deal with it. These promise to cut charging times, make owning an EV more convenient and most certainly, eradicate the headache of range anxiety.

What Are Different Levels Of EV Chargers
Nowadays, manufacturers offer different types and models of electric vehicles (EVs). A primary difference is their power and how fast they charge the EV. Charging the electric car is rather classified into three different levels, namely, Level 1, 2, and 3. A higher charging level offers higher output, and charging speed. Hence, knowing them in detail allows you to make the correct choice.
Understand the charging levels!
Depending on the current type delivered and their optimum power output, they are classified into three levels. The first and second levels deliver AC (alternating current) to your EV with an optimum power output of 2.3 to 22kW. On the other hand, the third charging level delivers DC (direct current) into your vehicle’s battery. It provides power of about 400kW, thus enabling faster charging.
Enhance your EV charging knowledge!
EVs are gaining worldwide popularity, even in developing countries like India. You don’t have to depend on the fossil fuel station to fill your electric vehicle. Instead, you have diverse options to choose from in your region. However, the time to charge your vehicle may vary based on your vehicle type and the charging station model. Know the EV charging stations in India to ensure your vehicle stays charged all the time.
Level 1 charging
The average time required to charge a medium-sized vehicle is approximately 19 hours. They are the slowest and can be used to charge your car at home’s 2.3kW electrical circuit. The EV manufacturer provides a cable. One end is plugged into the vehicle, while the other end to the regular wall outlet. Per hour charge offers a range of 4-5 miles. You may use it anywhere without any worry.
Level 2 charging
A medium-sized EV may take approximately 1 hour to 6 hours to charge fully. Dedicated charging stations are available at residential complexes, workplaces, parking stations, etc. They use AC sources and are faster. They may have additional functionalities installed by professional electricians. They provide quick charging speeds and are a better option than a level 1 charger.
Level 3 charging
A medium-sized EV takes approximately 17 to 52 minutes to charge fully, depending on the make and battery size. These chargers provide higher output than level 1 and 2 chargers. Hence, they suit commercial businesses like complexes, gas stations, etc. Grid-based AC is converted to DC directly in the charging station.
What level types suit your EV?
Check the manual and understand the level types suitable for your vehicle. Follow instructions strictly to prevent damage to the battery and engine. Remember, wrong usage or charging might cause costly repairs and replacements.

Four adults will find ample headroom and legroom, ensuring a comfortable journey. However, accommodating five adults might feel a bit cramped due to the cabin’s narrower dimensions.
Citroen eC3: Range, Top Speed & Charging
The eC3 distinguishes itself by offering a single battery size — a 29.2kWh lithium-ion pack. Citroen claims a mileage of 320 kilometers/charge (ARAI), though real-world range expectations are typically lower, as is the case with most EV cars. A comprehensive test will be needed to assess the eC3’s actual range, performance, and charging capabilities.
Citroen eC3 is one of the best EV cars in India but it doesn’t provide a wall box charger. Consequently, charging at home via a 15A plug point will require approximately 10.5 hours to reach a full charge from 10 percent. For faster charging, the eC3 is compatible with DC fast chargers, promising an 80 percent charge in about an hour. Interestingly, Citroen notes that the eC3 can undergo DC fast charging more frequently, thanks to its lower overall charging speed.
To extend battery life, many experts recommend regular AC charging for this electric car. The eC3 adopts an air-cooled battery cooling system, which maintains low charging and discharge rates. This ensures that the battery operates within a controlled temperature range, limiting rapid temperature fluctuations. Consequently, even during DC fast charging, the charging speed is moderated, with the motor’s power consumption kept in check. The motor generates a modest 57 horsepower, while torque stands at a more respectable 143 Newton-meters. The eC3’s top speed is limited to 107 kilometers per hour.
Citroen eC3 Price in India
The Citroen eC3 is available in four different variants, with ex-showroom prices ranging from ₹11.5 to ₹12.68 lakh. The top-of-the-line variant is the Feel Dual Tone Vibe Pack, while the base variant is known as Live. You can refer to the table below for detailed pricing information based on the eC3 variants.
Variants Starting PriceLive₹ 11,50,000Feel₹ 12,38,000Feel Vibe Pack₹ 12,53,000Feel Dual Tone Vibe Pack₹ 12,68,000
Citroen eC3: Optimized Boot Space, Ground Clearance and Comfort
Tumblr media
While the ground clearance decreases from 180mm to 170mm for this electric car, it remains more than sufficient for most urban driving conditions. The floor sees a 70mm elevation, resulting in a knees-up seating position at the rear. However, ample legroom and space under the front seats ensure a comfortable ride. Remarkably, Citroen has ingeniously integrated the entire battery pack within the car’s extended wheelbase, avoiding the need for a split configuration, unlike other electric cars in India. Consequently, the eC3 retains a spare wheel and maintains a consistent 315-liter boot space.
Citroen eC3: Seamless Electric Integration
Citroen attributes the seamless integration of the electric powertrain to the C3’s CMP platform, designed with electrification in mind from its inception. Impressively, the eC3 made its market debut merely six months after the ICE version, showcasing Citroen’s commitment to electric cars. The compact battery neatly fits within the car’s wheelbase, eliminating the possibility of a front trunk (frunk), as the motor and controller unit occupy that space.
Citroen eC3: Equipment Discrepancies and Sparse Features
Despite being one of the best EV cars in India, the equipment level remains a point of contention of one of the seemingly best EVs in India. While the eC3 boasts the significant advantage of a day/night adjustment for the interior rearview mirror (IRVM), it still lacks several fundamental features. Notably, there is no rear wash wipe or defogger, and the eC3 relies on manual air conditioning, manual outside rearview mirror (ORVM) adjustment, and shared rear power window switches. The sparse equipment level is particularly noticeable on the eC3, given its positioning in a higher price bracket than the ICE version.
Partially compensating for these equipment limitations is a connectivity suite that introduces functions like geo-fencing and intruder alert, a feature that a lot of electric cars in India don’t sport.
Citroen eC3: The Driving Experience
Tumblr media
While the focus of this EV car may not be on high-performance, it offers a comfortable and composed ride ideal for urban environments. Acceleration from a standstill is gentle, and initial response may not exhibit the instant, brisk acceleration characteristic of many EVs. However, beyond 30 kilometers per hour, the eC3 picks up pace more effectively. Citroen claims a 0 to 60 kilometers per hour time of 6.8 seconds

Mahindra New Cars: Everything You Need to Know
Introduction:
With the Scorpio-N, Mahindra has surpassed all other SUV manufacturers in India. Yet, the influx of new Mahindra vehicles is still ongoing. A detailed list of the Mahindra lineup for 2023 and 2024 can be found here.
1. Mahindra XUV400 EV:
The first of many Mahindra New Cars scheduled for that year, the XUV400, would be made available by Mahindra in January 2023. There is more to Mahindra's upcoming electric vehicle in India than just a plug-in XUV300. Both in terms of size and power, it is more substantial. A Li-ion battery with a 39.4 kilowatt-hour capacity powers one motor.
Maximum horsepower and torque are rated at 147.5 hp and 310 Nm, respectively. The electric SUV can reach up to 150 kilometers per hour and can cover an acceleration distance of 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 8.3 seconds.
A fully charged Mahindra XUV400 has a maximum range that has been validated by ARAI of 456 kilometres. The Mahindra New Vehicles will compete in the market for electric vehicles, just like the Tata Nexon EV. It can be charged to 100% using a 50 kW DC fast charger in 50 minutes, but it will take 6 hours and 30 minutes to reach 80% using a 7.2 kW/32A outlet. Three distinct "driving modes" for the forthcoming electric Vehicle will either extend range or speed. Having fun, moving rapidly, and not being afraid of the unknown are a few of these traits. Some of the highlights include six airbags, a sunroof, a 7-inch touchscreen entertainment system, a rear-view camera, and more than 60 different networking options.
2. Mahindra eKUV100:
The Mahindra KUV100 will replace the KUV90, a B1-segment hatchback with SUV styling that was discontinued due to poor sales. Mahindra now seems poised to give the KUV100 new life by turning its slowly selling vehicle into an electric vehicle (EV).
3. Mahindra Thar 5-Door:
The Scorpio and Bolero, two of Mahindra's best-known off-road vehicles, have a reputation for dependability and toughness. The Thar, however, distinguishes out from the competition in terms of both performance and looks. The new Thar has been one of India's most well-liked vehicles since its release. Sometime around 2023, the new Thar 5-Door variant will be available. The 2.0L Turbo-petrol and 2.2L diesel engines in the current Thar 5-Door may or may not receive an improved tune, but you anticipate they will be retained.
4. Mahindra XUV Aero:
The Mahindra XUV Aero first debuted at the 2016 Auto Expo. Mahindra eventually abandoned the idea in favor of the XUV700 and the Scorpio-N. Therefore, the design was never put into production. However, the crossover SUV may be released by the end of 2023. While the XUV Aero concept looks like the Mahindra XUV 500, the production model may take design cues from the XUV700 and the Born Electric idea. The coupe-crossover body design will continue to be used.
5. Mahindra XUVe8 (XUV700 EV):
Even though the Mahindra XUV700 has already achieved remarkable success, the company is working on a new version of its best-selling flagship model. The Mahindra XUV700 EV, which is slated to be on sale in India by the end of 2019, has the potential to be the country's first fully electric sport utility vehicle. The new model will have the same high-end features as the XUV700 AX7L. Digital gauge cluster, automatic dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and a 360-degree camera just a few of the goodies that come standard on this particular model.
6. Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus:
Mahindra reintroduced the TUV300, this time as the Bolero Neo, in July 2021. Since the Mahindra New Cars release, it has been widely expected that the larger TUV300 Plus will be phased out in favor of the Bolero Neo Plus. It is now anticipated that the same will debut in the first quarter of 2023. The huge SUV may be had with as many as nine seats, making it a tough people carrier. The Bolero Neo Plus should have a refined version of the dependable 2.2L diesel engine seen in the Scorpio Classic under the hood. The powerplant will be paired with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox.
