Let this be a lesson to all of you: DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN WITHOUT PROTECTION. As I was setting up for solar observing, before I had the chance to put on my solar filter, the sun burned a hole through the dust cap of my eyepiece. An updated poster from @nasa about #Eclipse2017! Make sure to look for the "ISO" icon, including the ISO reference 12312-2, which means the glasses meet the requirements for direct observation of the sun. The name of one of five manufacturers who have been verified by the American Astronomical Society as producers of safe eclipse glasses: American Paper Optics, Baader Planetarium (AstroSolar Silver/Gold film only), Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.
