“Our torogan was first built some 260 years ago with the founding of the agama (community) of Dayawan and the installation of the first Sultan of Dayawan. The prestige of this royal house has grown beyond the boundaries of the community. Together with the royal houses of Marawi, Marantao, Guimba, and Madaya, Dayawan is a “keeper” of the House of Lanao. This means that the Sultan of Lanao must belong to the major descent lines of these communities.

Members of this historical royal house led the defense of Marawi against the Spanish in 1891 and 1895. During the American Occupation, Dayawan was very active. In 1935, it was one of the royal houses that hosted the signing of the so-called Dansalan or Marawi Declaration, which was submitted to the US Congress and President. In this declaration, the Maranao datus expressed their desire to maintain independence from Manila. The datus declared that they would rather ‘drown in the lake’ than allow Lanao (and the rest of Mindanao) to be included in the coming Philippine statehood.”

Lanao Del Sur

Ngayong papalapit na ang pasko, siguro marami na sa atin ang nagpaplano kung saan magandang pumunta at mamasyal. Maraming mga magagandang tanawin dito sa Pilipinas. Sa Luzon man, Visayas o kaya naman sa Mindanao. Noong Mayo 23 2017, nang magsimula ang labanan sa Marawi laban sa Maute group. Makalipas ang 154 na araw ay natapos din ito noong Oktubre 23 2017. Marami ang buhay na nasawi at mga arkitekturang napinsala gayunpama'y nanatili pa rin ang pagkakaisa ng mga Maranao. Ngayon, tunghayan natin ang kaibig-ibig, kaakit-akit at kagila-gilalas na Lanao Del sur!

Ang Lanao del sur ay nasa rehiyon ng ARMM at ang kapital nito ay ang Marawi City. Ito ay may 1,158 na barangay at may 39 na munisipyo. Ang mga nakatira rito ay ang mga Maranao. Ang ibigsabihin ng salitang Maranao ay “mga tao sa lawa” sapagkat ang mga Maranao ay namumuhay at naninirahan sa paligid ng Lake Lanao sa loob ng maraming siglo at sila ay isa sa labintatlong pangkat etnolinggwistiko sa Mindanao at Palawan. Muslim ang relihiyon ng mga Maranao kaya’t maraming mga mosque sa loob at labas man ng Marawi, ipinapakita nito kung gaano kalakas ang kanilang pananampalataya. Maranao, Filipino (Tagalog), Cebuano at Arabic naman ang gamit nilang wika. Tulad ng ibang tribo ang mga Maranao ay may mayaman ding tradisyon at kultura. Isa rito ay ang kaugalian nilang ang mga kabataan ay palaging napapailalim sa pagsumite ng mga may edad na. Ang mga kabataan ay dapat sumunod sa mga kautusan o kahilingan ng mga matatanda. Ang pagsunod sa kaugalian na ito ay nagsisilbing pagsasanay sa pag-aayos ng pag-aasawa at upang mapangalagaan na rin ang uri ng pamumuhay ng mga Maranao. Bukod sa kanilang kultura at tradisyon, mayroon rin silang mga panitikan. Isa na rito ang Darangan, ang Epiko ng Maranao. Ang mga Darangan ay nasusulat sa wikang Maranaw. Ang lalong popular sa lahat ay ang Bantugan, na paulit-ulit na binibigkas sa dating pagkakakatha sa palibot ng Lawa ng Lanaw. May ilang mga Muslim ngayon na nakapag-uulit sa kabuuan ng Bantugan. Ang Alamat ng Lawa ng Lanao naman ay pumapatungkol sa pinaggalingan o kung paano nabuo ang lawa ng lanao. Ipinapakita rin nito ang pagkamalikhain ng ating mga ninuno tungkol sa pagpapaliwanang ng kanilang kapaligiran. Gusto nilang bigyang halaga ang kalikasan sa pamamagitan ng mga kuwento at alamat. Isa rin sa kanilang mga tradisyon o paniniwala, kapag daw may paglalaho o eklipse, hinahampas nila ang mga lata at bakal upang magkaingayan. Ito’y upang mawala raw agad ang eklipse. Itong paniniwala o kaugalian ay ginagawa rin sa Kotabato. Ayon kasi sa kanilang alamat, noong unang panahon, ang buwan ay nilunok ng isang napakalaking ibong kung tawagin ay minokawa.  Nang marinig ang sigawan ng mga tao ang minokawa ay sumilip sa pagitan ng mga ulap at binuksan ang tuka.  Sa pagbubukas niya ng tuka, ang buwan ay nakatanaw.  Sa kalakihan ng minokawa, ang daigdig ay nangagdilim kapag nagdaraan siya sa palipad. Binabantayan ng minokawa ang pagsikat ng araw upang iyon ay isunod niyang lunukin.  Subalit siya ay bigo at nawalan ng pag-asa kaya’t siya ay lumisan sa Lanaw at Kotabato. Naniniwala ang mga tao na kapag bumalik si minokawa ay tiyak na isusunod niya ang araw at pagkatapos ay ang daigdig. Ang Lanao del sur ay hindi lang mayaman sa kultura, tradisyon at panitikan, sila rin ay mayaman sa mga magagandang tanawin. Ito ang ilan sa mga makapigil hiningang mga tanawin at sulit na puntahan sa Lanao Del Sur.

Taraka ay isang malaking bahagi ng kasaysayan sa Lanao Del sur. Ito ay isa sa mga catalysts ng Islamization ng mga Maranao sa ika-16 na siglo at ang tahanan ni Baab Ur-Rahman Masjid, ang pinakalumang moske sa lalawigan.

Ipinahayag ng National Museum bilang National Cultural Treasure ang torogan. Ito ay tahanan ng mga mayayamang maranao o ang mga datu  o sultan. Ang pinakasikat ay ang Dayawan Torogan sa Marawi City. Ito ay gawa sa kahoy at may disenyo na tawag ay okir.

Ang Tugaya ay ang Paete ng Mindanao. Ngunit ang sining na ito ay higit pa sa mga mahuhusay na woodcarvings. Ito ay tungkol din sa paghahagis ng brassware, back-strap loom weaving, hand-made tapestry stitching, at gold smithing. Halos lahat ng tahanan sa Lawa ng Lanao ay may isang craftsman na ang mga kasanayan at kasiningan ay pinapahalagahan.

Kung ikaw ay pupunta rito sa Lanao del Sur, ihanda mo ang iyong tiyan sa mga masasarap at natatangi nilang mga putahe!

Ang karaniwang putahe ng mga Maranao ay mailalarawan sa paggamit ng maraming niyog na ang tawag ay tono at gumagamit rin sila ng mga pampalasa tulad ng turmeric o kalawag. Isa sa mga sikat nilang putahe ay ang Palapa, ito ay may scallion na may sili at katas ng niyog.

Sa lahat, ang mga katangian ng mga Maranao ang nangingibabaw at umaangat. Kahit pa man sila'y nakaranas ng matinding  pagsubok,  sila pa rin ay nananatiling masayahin at magiliw sa kabila ng mga masasakit na pangyayari Iyan ang mga Maranao, Iyan ang Lanao Del Sur!
