Type of Boyfriends | Dream Headcanon #15
Headcanon: Type of Boyfriends
Genre: Fluff, a little angsty in some parts
Warnings: light mentions of anxiety and feeling insecure
Word Count: ~2.7k
Author's Note: I was actually planning on writing something for Haechan today. But I had the content for this headcanon pre-planned for quite some time now, so I just thought it would be good to actually write it. Also, I haven't been making a lot of group posts lately—so this is me making up for it lol. I know this idea isn't super original, but I wanted to make my version of it. I'm sorry if the scenarios are written badly, but I still thank you for reading ^ ^
~ ~ ~
mark
Mark is the type of boyfriend who feels like your best friend but with the added warmth of kisses and hugs. He loves taking you on spontaneous midnight drives, where carpool karaoke becomes your shared stage, belting out your favorite tunes together. Music is a big part of your relationship, with shared Spotify playlists that reflect your combined tastes and moments. Whenever you’re feeling down, he grabs his guitar and serenades you with Bruno Mars or Day6 songs, lifting your spirits with his husky yet gentle voice. He’s also the type of boyfriend who writes songs about you, with lyrics so touching they bring you to tears.
He’s the type of boyfriend who attempts to cook for you but ultimately results in a comedy of errors. But they always end in laughter as you step in to save the kitchen from further disaster. His cooking skills would likely improve over time, with your guidance. You’d patiently be teaching him the proper way to cut vegetables or how much seasoning should be put in a dish. But he’s the type of boyfriend to lose focus because he keeps getting distracted by how pretty you look. And then you’d blush profusely when you caught his gaze and scold him for not listening.
He’s the type of boyfriend to give you bone-crushing hugs whenever he finds something you did cute. He especially does this when you get annoyed at him for something, finding the furrow of your brows and pouty lips to be so adorable. He’s the type to go in for long kisses after being away from you for a long time. His career often keeps him away, leaving him longing for the moments he can be with you. He’s the type of boyfriend to give kisses that are so warm and tender, filled with a depth of emotion that speaks volumes about how much he cherishes you. Each kiss feels like a promise, a reassurance that no matter how far apart you are, his heart is always with you.
He’s the type of boyfriend who would geek out with you over shared interests, like Spiderman. Whether it's discussing the latest movie or comic book, these moments of shared enthusiasm bring you even closer. He’s the type of boyfriend who would watch k-dramas with you and enjoy ranting with you about the characters. These shared experiences, filled with laughter, debates, and discussions deepen your bond and create fond memories to look back on.
All in all, Mark is the type of boyfriend who is a unique blend of friendship, romance, and genuine affection that makes him the perfect partner, someone who brings joy, music, and a sense of adventure into your life.

renjun
Renjun is the type of boyfriend to be motherly at times with how attentive and caring he is. He’s always looking after you in subtle ways, like telling you the weather beforehand so you know to wear a jacket before your date. When you share your insecurities with him, he responds by creating beautiful paintings or drawings of you, turning your worries into art. He's also the type to blush when you compliment him but cleverly turns the praise back on you, making you feel just as flustered.
He’s the type of boyfriend who loves planning and sharing things with you, like maintaining a shared Pinterest board of matching couple outfits you both should try. He’s the type to enjoy doing your skincare routines together during sleepovers, transforming these moments into intimate bonding experiences. He has a great sense of style and is the type of boyfriend who helps put together your outfits, and even learns how to style your hair to make sure you feel confident and beautiful. He’s also the type of boyfriend to patiently untangle your earphones when you get frustrated trying to do it yourself.
He’s the type of boyfriend to be deeply empathetic and share his concerns with you, valuing open communication in your relationship. He’s not afraid to show his emotions, and he tears up when he hears about your hard times, feeling your pain as his own. His thoughtful nature ensures you always feel understood and supported. When he’s the one dealing with hardships, he appreciates you just being there to hug him and talk him through his thoughts. No matter what’s troubling him, your presence alone makes him feel a little better.
He’s the type of boyfriend who may not be as physically affectionate as the other members. Though he doesn't kiss you often, it’s always behind closed doors when he does. Similar to Mark, he’s the type of boyfriend whose kisses are long, deep, and sincere, filled with unspoken affection and love. But he’s also the type of boyfriend to surprise you with pecks to the lips when he finds you cute.
Ultimately, Renjun is the type of boyfriend who truly cares for you in every way, creating a relationship built on mutual respect, understanding, and deep emotional connection. He doesn’t need to say anything for you to know how much he loves you, you can just feel it whenever you look at him.

These gestures not only showcase his protective instincts but also his possessive side, reminding you and others that you’re his.
He’s the type of boyfriend to keep you on your toes with how affectionate he can be. You never truly know what to expect from him. Sometimes, he surprises you with kisses so deeply passionate that they leave you breathless. His thoughtfulness shines through in these acts of service, making you feel cherished and loved in practical ways.
He’s the type of boyfriend to be a compassionate listener who values your thoughts and feelings deeply. When you share your concerns or discuss something that's bothering you, he listens intently, his touch gentle as he traces comforting patterns on your hand. His ability to offer silent support and understanding strengthens your bond, creating a safe space where you can be vulnerable and open with each other.
In essence, Jeno is the type of boyfriend who is a partner that fills your life with love and security. Being with him will make you feel like you’re stuck in the honeymoon phase forever.

He’s the type of boyfriend who is generally easygoing, though he has his moments of jealousy. He gets laughably envious when you give more attention to his cats than him or when you rave about how Jeno looked on stage. These moments of jealousy are never overbearing but rather endearing, showing how much he values your attention and affection. And he loves that you always reassure him that your heart belongs to him.
He’s the type of boyfriend to take countless photos of you on your dates. Even if you don’t love having your photo taken, he just can’t resist capturing your beauty. Besides, he insists it's for the memories to look back on when you two are old and fray. He’s the type to have his phone gallery filled with pictures of you, and he proudly shows them to his members from time to time. While you could point out all your flaws in one picture, Jaemin never even looked at them. No matter how insecure you might be, he’s the type of boyfriend to make you feel pretty.
Simply put, Jaemin is the type of boyfriend who is practically perfect with his unwavering support and daily reminders of his love. Being in a relationship with him is nurturing, fun, and filled with dreams for the future.

chenle
Chenle is the type of boyfriend who can be really annoying at times, but you can’t help but love him for it. He loves to joke around and make you laugh, especially when you're feeling down. When he does something that annoys you, he’s quick to make it up with a lot of hugs, using affection to win you over. Most of the time, you end up giving into his silliness and laughing with him.
He’s the type of boyfriend to buy gifts for you quite often, something you kind of had to get used to. He’s the type to surprise you with things he’s seen you admiring online or at a store. Even if you scold him for not saving his money or spending it more wisely, Chenle insists that as your boyfriend, it’s part of his job to spoil you.
He’s also the type of boyfriend to share his passions with you, whether it’s taking you to see a Warrior’s game or having you watch and cheer him on as he plays basketball. He’s the type of boyfriend who regularly gushes to you about how cute the members are, but gets all shy when you also call him cute. He’s also the type to feel a little betrayed when his dog, Daegal, likes you more than him. However, he can never be sulky for long because he can’t really blame her. And he admires how you always make sure his daughter runs back into his arms.
Altogether, Chenle is the type of boyfriend to keep your life vibrant and full of love with his playfulness, generosity, and genuine care. Although he drives you crazy at times, he teaches you how to have fun and live in the present.

He’s the type to hide behind your back or bury his face in your shirt when he gets embarrassed about something. I’ll hold my breath as I wait for your answer I’ll leave it up to you Tell me whether it’s yes or no Baby, love me or leave me tonight
Love Me or Leave Me - Day6
Tumblr media
The warning signs, they're there. You can see them before they materialize. You know your own tells.
Your metaphorical bags are packed, your shoes are already on. You're about to run again, leave a half empty house before it has the chance to become a home. No one has to tell you that you're a flight risk; you're well aware of it yourself.
Wednesday Min: got plans tonight? You: booked and busy with ze old canvas Min: tomorrow? You: same thing probably. sorry Min: u're working hard lately You: yeah this one is just driving me crazy and i need it to turn out decent Min: it'll be perfect. it's u
Thursday Min: running errands at the store Min: want me to bring u anything? that caramel popcorn u like?
Friday Min: don't work too hard. remember to eat
That was three days ago, the last time you'd heard from him after you left him on read. It wasn't a complete lie; this project is driving you kinda crazy and you do need it to end up a decent piece, but you weren't exactly holed up in your apartment to slave over your painting. And you suppose Minho didn't find it all that suspicious because you tend to do this sometimes - disappear for a couple of days and force yourself to focus whenever you had a project to finish, before you come back to everybody again. You've come back to him before; it stands to reason that you'll do it again.
It's been about two weeks since you'd seen him, though the memories of that evening are still fresh in your mind - the evening of the group dinner, when he'd kissed you goodnight and left for his parents' house the following day. True to his words, he did send you pictures of the cats - ones of Soonie wearing a matching hoodie with him, a few of Doongie and Dori napping at the foot of his bed. There was an accompanying text - The kids miss you - along with a frowning emoji, and it made you wonder if what he really meant was I miss you.
You wanted him to miss you, because you missed him too.
The photos brought a smile to your face despite the predicament you found yourself in. A smile that was short lived, a smile that was soon wiped off when you realized your heart shouldn't be swelling with that much affection for him. It shouldn't, but the truth was that it did and you don't know how to live with it.
Love isn't something you've ever learned to hold.
It's beautiful yet full of thorns, and your hands are too clumsy to ever keep it from slipping from your fingers.
You remember when you first met Minho. Freshman year, at some popular senior's house party.
It feels like forever ago when you were just an awkward freshman at orientation who didn't have a single clue on how to make friends. Jess was your first friend in college, and you'll always be grateful that you got along well enough that she adopted you into the group with the rest of the guys.
You didn't cross paths with Minho until you were already acquainted with everyone else. On the night of the party, you remember being enamored with him for those couple of hours, and it wasn't the side effect of too many solo cups of cheap beer. Who in their right mind wouldn't be infatuated with him? He was beautiful, absolutely alluring, and you would always tell him as much.
Back then, he had brown hair, slighter shorter than now but it was tinted with the most gorgeous shade of red. You didn't know much about Minho, only been told that he was pretty quiet and might be off-putting to new people. It was sort of true; that night, you were intimidated by the aura he exuded. Mysterious, couldn't be bothered, didn't seem to give a shit. He looked like a scary little thing, while you were the new kid who was only trying to observe everyone's dynamics, not wanting to overstep any unspoken boundary.
To this day, you're still not sure what really happened, how you two immediately clicked and he's been one of the most important parts of your life ever since.
Maybe it was just him. Maybe it's always been him.
Minho, the one who makes you smile when all you want to do is curl up and cry. The one who makes you laugh when you look for joy but the search comes up empty. The one who grounds you every time you lose your way. Your anchor, the safe harbor you can always return to. The light at the end of a long, long tunnel.
You don't know where you stand, don't know where it goes from here now that everything is changing. He told you so himself, that nothing changed for him, but how could he possibly know that everything is changing for you? And it infuriates you to no end because you don't even have anyone to talk about this with. You're the only person whose world is being turned upside down after all.
You can't tell your friends because they can't know about you and Minho. You can't tell Minho because what would you even say? That you think you're in love with him? That the implications of what it means are devastating to you?
For the first time, you regret everything. Kissing him that night, sleeping with him, becoming whatever this is with him. Letting down your guard and falling for him somewhere along the way and you didn't even stop to notice it. You regret all of the decisions you've made up until now, because they've only led you to the point of no return, the point of losing him. You made bad decision after bad decision after bad decision, until you couldn't anymore. All along, there's been no one else to blame but you.
Maybe it hasn't happened yet, but it's inevitable. You will lose him. You are going to lose him.
There's no other ending, no other alternative that you can imagine. You're going to leave because you're a coward and it's what you do best. You ruin things before they get a chance to hurt you. You leave because if you don't leave then you'll be left behind, and you'd rather not bear the brunt of it.
Now, when you think of Minho, the thought is always accompanied by a painful reminder - Nothing changed for him.
Tumblr media
When you get to the cafe, Hyunjin and Seungmin are already seated in a corner booth, three drinks in front of them, one of which they'd ordered for you before you arrived.
You slide into the seat next to Hyunjin, smiling at him appreciatively for the drink. There's still over half an hour before you have to walk to your shared class, over half an hour before Seungmin parts ways with you two to do whatever or whoever it is that Seungmin does on his off days.
"I still think it's Nara," Hyunjin says, casually sipping his iced coffee.
"Nara from your Lit class last semester?"
"Yup."
"Why?"
"I saw them talking at a party once."
"Okay. And?"
"And what? That's it."
"That's... all the evidence you have to back up your claim?"
"Pretty much, yeah."
You wave your hands in front of them. "What are you bozos talking about?"
"He’s still trying to figure out who Minho is hooking up with," Seungmin is the one who answers you without missing a beat, then he turns back to Hyunjin. "Anyway, it can't be Nara. She's dating Jaehyun on the basketball team."
The friend next to you flails his arms like a petulant child, like he couldn't have possibly seen this coming, like he was so sure that he had finally solved the mystery. "Great. I'm back to square one again."
You straighten your back and reach for your drink, tentatively gulping down the beverage as if it'll hide the fact that you've gone stiff the second this topic is brought up. You feel bad about it, sure. These are your friends that you're lying to after all. They don't have to look anywhere far; the answer to the secret is right in front of them.
"We're still on about that?" you ask in the calmest, most nonchalant voice you can muster. You usually consider yourself a believable liar (which, to be honest, isn't really a flex at all), but whenever someone mentions this little arrangement between you and Minho that shouldn't be common knowledge for anyone else, you feel like you're been put under a spotlight for the whole world to scrutinize.
"Duh," Hyunjin says. "You know, I'm kinda surprised that you don't know. You two are like, attached at the hip sometimes."
You give him a thoughtless shrug, your hands fiddling with the sticker on the plastic cup as you avoid looking at either of your friends. "Maybe he just wants to keep private things private, y'know? You wouldn't like either if all of us is suddenly all up in your business. And besides, what if it's just casual?"
Hyunjin scoffs. "Please, I'm an open book. I tell you guys everything. I tell you every time I hook up with someone."
"Yeah, but you see, literally no one needs to know that," Seungmin says.
The taller one only scoffs, waving his hands around dismissively in Seungmin's direction before he turns to you. "If it was just casual, would he save her name as - oh my God, I forgot what her contact name is. Freaking bird person or something."
You make a face. "What?"
"Dude, seriously?" Seungmin rolls his eyes. "You forgot one word? Dove? What is the matter with you?"
Perhaps it's the half-hearted teasing judgment in Seungmin's voice that makes Hyunjin take offense and drop the topic. The conversation veers off course when they start bickering like children in the busy cafe. You suppose it works in your favor, but you can't focus. You drown it all out.
Your hand is still on the cup but the sticker has been left alone and forgotten, half peeled off, half still clinging to the plastic underneath the condensation.
The single word repeats itself in your mind, over and over and over again.
Tumblr media
The entire time you're in class, you don't really focus on anything. You can't bring yourself to listen to whatever your professor is saying, not after what Hyunjin and Seungmin told you earlier. At some point, your friend has to nudge your shoulder to bring you back down to earth when usually, you're the one who has to remind Hyunjin to pay attention. Class ends soon enough though; time tends to fly by when your mind is lost elsewhere.
"What's wrong with you today?" he asks with his bag slung over his shoulder, slowing down his steps to match your speed as you walk out of the lecture hall together.
You scratch the back of your neck sheepishly. "Nothing's wrong. I was just tired."
"You wanna grab dinner with me and Felix?"
Any other day, you would've agreed in a heartbeat. But today, you want to be alone. Sometimes, you'd rather wallow in your own misery than settle for a temporary distraction.
You're still stuck on the conversation from earlier, on the small detail that Hyunjin and Seungmin had let slip in the cafe.
Dove.
His dove.
Maybe it doesn't mean anything. Perhaps it's only a nickname that he's assigned to you out of mere platonic fondness, but it makes you conscious about the dove on your own wrist nonetheless, the one that you feel compelled to hide from your friends underneath your long sleeve.
"No, it's okay," you tell Hyunjin. "I'll just go home and sleep it off."
"Okay. I can walk you for a bit," he says. "Just wait with me here. Minho's coming to give me back something he borrowed."
"Minho's coming?" you ask too quickly for it to sound casual. There's a panicked edge that you can hear in your own voice, though you don't think Hyunjin picks it up as he unlocks his phone and types something on the screen.
"Yeah, he was at the library. He's coming over right now, should only be a couple minutes. Then I'll walk back with you."
You shift on your feet uneasily, but you cover it up by rubbing your hands on your arms to pretend like you're just cold. There's no excuse that you could think of that would justify why you can't stand here with Hyunjin for just two more minutes, without giving it away the fact that you're avoiding Minho.
You take in a quiet breath, put on your best brave face. Casual, nonchalant. It's just Minho. Just Minho...
He comes up from behind, where you can't see him. A warm hand gently lands on your shoulder, and it takes everything not to shy away from his touch. It takes even more not to lean into his side.
You've missed it. You've missed him.
"Hey." He smiles at you while Hyunjin only gets a nod in acknowledgment.
"Hey." You return the smile, though you're sure you look a little rigid. You can tell there's an inkling of confusion in his eyes when he senses that your energy is off, but you're thankful he doesn't comment on it, at least not in front of Hyunjin anyway.
You don't notice the paper bag in his other hand until he hands it to your other friend with a simple Thanks, to which Hyunjin just nods along in a silent You're welcome.
"I was going to walk with Y/N for a bit and then meet Felix for food," he tells Minho. "You wanna get burgers with me and Lix?"
"No, thanks. I'm not hungry, I had a late lunch. I'll take the walk though."
Tumblr media
You didn't plan on being alone with Minho today, even though you knew you had to talk to him eventually. You just thought you had a little more time, at least until you got your shit together and face him with a brave façade.
Minho's hand brushes yours the entire time you walk, and it's nothing if not confusing. It's unbearable, the way your fingers twitch with the urge to intertwine them with his.
It persists even after Hyunjin has waved you goodbye to you two and turned to head wherever he and Felix agreed to meet. You think Minho would hold your hand now that it's just you and him, but he doesn't. He lets your skin continue to brush, lets you suffer alone and wanting in your sunken disappointment.
It has very little to do with him and everything to do with you, the conflicting thoughts inside your head piling up one by one the more time you spend in his presence.
Dove, the brief display of jealousy at Yeonjun's party, the way he looks at you sometimes that you can't really decipher the meaning behind, how he kisses you so tenderly that it can't possibly be strictly platonic. You want these things to all mean something, and yet...
You want him to hold your hand, but you know you'd wave it off if he tries to reach for your fingers. You want him to stop you right then and there to kiss you breathless, just as he had that night two weeks ago, even though you're sure you'd only dodge his lips and push him away. You want to stay, you want to leave. You're terrified of things changing, but you wish that something, anything, would be different for him; that you aren't the only one who's spinning out of control. You love him, but you wish you didn't.
Eventually, Minho asks, "You okay?"
It's not until now that you realize this is the first time you've ever been this quiet around him. You purse your lips, glancing down briefly at your feet as you keep on treading the rest of the way home. "Yeah, all good. I'm just tired," you tell him, visibly unenthusiastic despite the smile you try to fake. "I just need to sleep it off."
"The project stressing you out?"
"I guess, yeah."
"And here I thought maybe you were avoiding me," he says, half a joke, half inquisitive. "Were you?"
"Was I what?"
"Were you avoiding me?"
You give him a weird look, one that's meant to be dismissive and call his question ridiculous even though you know you've been caught. And maybe it's the over-the-top glance that you throw his way and the way your pitch goes higher when you reply, "Why would I be avoiding you?" that makes him stop walking.
On the other side of the street, there's a couple of kids in high school uniforms, exchanging shy glances and sharing fond giggles.
Minho calls your name softly, and it's like you're just waiting for the ball to drop. You don't want to turn back and look at him, but what other option do you have? What else is there to do?
You can't decipher the expression on his face. He's still calm, but the air has turned serious, the silence of the mostly empty streets surrounding you only serves as the soundtrack of your impending heartbreak. The tender and innocent laughter fades away when young love moves further and further from where you stand. "What?" you ask with faux nonchalance as you look at him, another attempt at stalling. Biding your time even though a few more minutes aren't going to do any good for your case.
Anyone with half a braincell could tell that clearly it's not the truth, let alone someone who has learned to read you better than the back of his hand. He doesn't look like he believes you, though he doesn't push it, much to your surprise.
"Okay," he says after a moment of studying you, and this should be the part where you heave a sigh of relief because he's letting you off the hook for now, but your chest doesn't feel lighter at all. Your head is clouded with dread, with the anticipation that you're only delaying the inevitable.
You walk the rest of the way in awful silence, because you know that he knows something is wrong. You try your best to appear composed, but he sees right through you. You know he does.
You must look like a frightened animal, one that's about to take off running any second now.
When you reach your building, Minho is quick to keep you with him before you can make up a lame excuse and bolt.
"Hey," he starts, his voice so impossibly gentle that it hurts. "You know you can tell me anything, right?"
Heavier and heavier, it weighs you down until you feel like your chest is going to collapse. The nerves gnaw on you, clawing into you until you feel your heartbeat quicken, the overwhelming dread simmering low in your belly.
"I know," you say, but deep down, what you're really thinking is, Not this. This is the one thing I can't tell you.
"Is everything okay?"
It's the way that Minho's got his gaze set on you with those deep brown irises, the concern so apparent in them that it hurts you. It's the way he looks like he wants to reach out and touch you - a comforting hand on your shoulder or your back like you're so familiar with - but he has to hold himself back or you might slip away.
It's him, how he always puts you first, how he cares about you in ways that you've never been cared about before. He understands you, he sees you. It feels like it could be love if you let the lines blur just enough.
Is love supposed to hurt? Like this?
Maybe it's not that you don't know how to hold love. Maybe it's because you're not meant to hold it at all. Insignificant, unlovable.
And... it's the reminder that cuts through the dread like the sharpest knife.
You leave his question unanswered, because nothing is okay and you can't tell him any of it. You can't lie to him either, because it's the last thing that you want to do to him.
Instead, you ask, "We're good... right? We're okay?"
"What do you mean?"
You gesture between the two of you, though you're not sure what that's supposed to signify. "Just...," you trail off for a second, hesitant. "Nothing's changed, right?"
Minho doesn't answer right away. He looks at you for a moment, searching for something in your eyes that you can't tell if he's able to find.
He nods, seemingly wistful as he says, "Nothing's changed."
He seems unsure about it, at least more than he was just a few weeks ago when he told you the same thing in your apartment with his fingers wrapped around your wrist. The tug between his brows - though barely noticeable - tells you as much.
Is it because something is different now? Or does he only sound uncertain out of concern, because of you and how you're acting?
Then he continues, "For me, at least."
And there it is.
It's the confirmation this time around that turns you inside out so his simple words could cut into you.
You swallow thickly, put on a smile like you're pleased with his answer even though you're trying your hardest to stop yourself from shaking. Whatever energy you had left is instantly drained from you just because of a few words.
Your sentences get smashed together, tangled up like barbed wire and they only make you bleed when you try to pull them apart. All your nervous tics coming out to play despite your best efforts to keep them at bay. A frustrated hand running through your hair, gripping at the roots a little harshly. Your bottom lip pulled between your teeth and your eyes turning glassy for a split second before you blink the moisture away, because you can't let Minho see you like this. See you trying to keep your pathetic heart intact while he's none the wiser.
He's fine. And unlike you, he's going to be okay when this is over.
Unavoidable and inevitable, the end will come whether you like it or not. You're the only one who won't make it out unscathed, and it will only shatter you into more pieces the longer you drag this out.
Just rip the bandaid off. Salvage whatever you can. Stop digging the grave even deeper for yourself.
One second, then two, then three. You don't speak until you have enough faith that your voice is even enough to carry out a few sentences.
"Okay, uhm... I think I need some time for myself. We should..." But it isn't, and you crack halfway through. The sound is deafening to your own ears. "We should take a break. We should stop this."
Minho doesn't question if you mean the secret between the two of you, or your friendship entirely. Instead, he asks, "Why?"
"I told you." You clear your throat. "I need time for myself."
You can't tell what he's thinking, but the knife twists inside of you nonetheless.
He takes a step closer, you take a step back.
You watch as his face falls, and the same feeling mirrors itself within the confines of your ribcage. Your heart drops at the sight of his eyes, deep brown irises stained with a little confusion, then a little hurt though it lasts for only a few seconds. The slight slump of his shoulders, the absence of the familiar playfulness he always sports when he's with you.
He blinks.
"Time for yourself, or time away from me?"
You say nothing.
You don't address his question directly, and your reluctance to do so is a loud enough answer in and of itself. "Why does that matter? What's the difference?"
"It matters if I did something to upset you."
"You didn't."
"Okay. So?"
This is confusing, because he's not letting you rip the bandaid clean off and you don't know why. "Nothing's changed, right? If it didn't mean anything to you, why can't you just drop this?"
Minho is quiet for a beat. His eyes are searching again, but this time, you think he finds something.
Everything is still and you hate it - the silence of the streets, the scrutinizing orange glow of the streetlights as if they're watching the scene unfold, even the innocent cat that's sitting by itself on the balcony on one of the floors higher up. You hate all of it.
"I never said it didn't mean anything," he tells you.
It makes you a little angry for some reason, and there's enough red to cloud your vision because his words are contradicting and you're tired, you're so exhausted that you can't focus on what it is that he's really saying.
"So you lied to me?"
"I've never lied to you."
"I asked you before and you said nothing's changed. Now you're saying whatever this is didn't not mean anything. Make up your mind."
It gets redder when he keeps his eyes fixed on you, still so calm despite the frown that has returned to its place between his brows. Still so collected, while you're being pulled apart at the seams.
The ball doesn't drop the way you expect it to. It keeps falling so insufferably slowly, hanging over you like it's mocking you for being stupid, like it's milking every second of suspense to make you implode.
Until Minho speaks next and suddenly, it feels like the air has been sucked out of your lungs. His voice, still so soft and tender. His eyes, reading something in yours that you can't bear to admit out loud.
"You really don't see it, do you?"

How to Love?
genre:; fluff, angst (not really). word counting: 1754
Seungmin x reader (ft. mingyu of seventeen). college Seungmin!. Medicine student Seungmin! (will write lots of university fics because im delulu college student *sobs)
wherein:  You are just curious, and you asked for tips from your friend, who willingly helped you.
i reccommend you to listen "how to love" by Day6
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You've never been in a relationship before.
Your focus has always been on studying. Study. And more study.
Aiming for the top has always been your priority, which is why the idea of having a boyfriend (or girlfriend) never even crossed your mind.
Besides, no one’s ever asked you out, so why bother thinking about relationships when the opportunity hasn’t even presented itself? (By the way, you’re not some stereotypical nerd. You love makeup and dressing up for yourself.)
But now that you’re in college, things are different. Your goals are getting harder to achieve. It’s not just that the course is challenging; it’s also because it’s not what you wanted to study in the first place. You’re here because of family pressure, and that’s made it even harder to keep up with your lessons.
In college, you start to realize something important:
Studying too much can really drain you.
As you look around, you notice how others are balancing their lives. Your deskmate parties every weekend, yet somehow she has the same grades as you. The notorious bad boy sitting in front, who’s always playing with girls' hearts and puts his studies at the bottom of his priority list, scored higher than you in Differential Equations.
And then there’s your dorm mate, who blushes while talking to someone on the phone. She has a boyfriend, yet she manages to balance her studies without letting it distract her. (By the way, why is she blushing?)
"I'm tired, physically and mentally," you say, resting your head on the cafeteria table while Seungmin, your friend, munches on his sandwich.
"That's what you get after not sleeping for several days and then pressuring yourself too much," he replies, continuing to eat his sandwich—wait, that’s yours!
You lift your head, tired but still sane.
"Then what should I do? What do college students do? Isn’t it our responsibility to learn?"
Seungmin rolls his eyes at your statement. "What are we, robots?" He puts down your sandwich and wipes his mouth with a napkin, realizing that it’s yours and that he should stop eating. (Only 1/8 of the sandwich is left.)
"Listen, you need to get a life. You’re wasting your college years with your nose buried in books. You should enjoy college because after this, adult life limits your happiness. So, as long as you can, enjoy and live your life."
On a normal day, you’d tease him, calling him dumb and saying he’s talking nonsense, but maybe because you’re so tired, or something else, for the first time what he’s saying makes sense.
"Wow, you’re making sense." Your face lights up, and Seungmin can’t help but laugh. "Is that what studying medicine does to you?"
"I'm always a genius, you dumbass. Eat my medals."
What Seungmin said rings in your brain. For the first time, you don’t stress about the upcoming exam.
"Seungmin," you call out after a long, comfortable silence.
"What?"
"I should date."
"Date what?"
"Date someone."
Suddenly, Seungmin clasps his hands together in an overly dramatic way and closes his eyes.
"Finally, my prayers have been heard."
But how do you start?
You weren’t pressured by your surroundings, right? You just want to experience it.
Experience.
But how?
"How?" you ask Seungmin when you sit under the mango tree, studying (again).
"How what? Don’t ask me math questions."
"I mean… how did you meet Shin?" you ask, closing your book.
Seungmin has a lot of experience in love. He’s had many girlfriends (and why not? He’s handsome). So asking him questions about love is never difficult.
Seungmin looks at you intently, his face showing a hint of curiosity.
"She came to me."
"And then what?" Curiosity is evident on your face. Why haven’t you asked him questions like this before?
"And then we dated."
"That fast?"
"It’s because she loved me too much, and I was just doing her a favor." You slap him hard.
"You’re a playboy."
"I’m not. I’m kind."
"So if anyone likes you, you just date them?"
"Well… no."
"I think I’m an idiot for asking you for advice." You lean back and open your book again.
Seungmin laughs at you. He realizes you must be serious about your decision, so why not help? (As a good friend should.)
"Okay, now listen to me. You won’t regret this decision, right?"
"Why are you getting scary?" you comment as he speaks with an unusually serious face.
"I mean, as your friend—a handsome friend, mind you—I’m going to tell you…" He pauses for dramatic effect. "How to love."
You pause, then hit his arm.
"Why are you making that serious face? You’re so funny." You both laugh, and when you’re tired from laughing, Seungmin continues.
"First, fall in love."
"Well, step one is kinda hard."
"Just use your charm, and then you’ll find love. And never let go of the people who want to take care of you. Have you seen yourself? You’re pushing people away."
"I am?" You think back to times in your life when you’ve pushed people away.
"Yes. So never do that. And if you find love, contact me for step two." He laughs, then stands up and runs off.
"What is this, a YouTube tutorial?" you sigh and open your book again, but your attention isn’t there.
"How can I find it?"
You sat alone at your usual spot in the cafeteria, a tray of untouched food in front of you. The sounds of chatter and laughter surrounded you, but your mind was elsewhere, replaying Seungmin's words about finding love. You let out a small sigh, thinking about how you’d even begin.
As you poked at your sandwich, someone slid into the seat across from you. You looked up, surprised. It was Mingyu, the handsome senior from your department. You’d seen him around before, but never this close. He had a confident, easygoing smile that made your heart skip a beat.
“Hey,” he said casually, setting his coffee down. “Mind if I sit here?”
You blinked, momentarily lost for words, then nodded. “Sure.”
He grinned. “I’ve seen you around. You’re always so focused, it’s impressive.”
You felt a blush creep up your cheeks. “Thanks, I guess. I just… try to stay on top of things.”
“You don’t have to explain,” he chuckled. “I get it. College is a lot. But you know, it’s also important to have fun.”
You looked at him, curiosity piqued. “And what do you do for fun?”
Mingyu leaned back, taking a sip of his coffee before answering. “I hang out with friends, play some basketball, and sometimes… I just like to talk to interesting people.”
Your heart fluttered at his words, and you couldn’t help but smile. The conversation flowed naturally from there—jokes, stories, shared frustrations about classes. Time seemed to fly by, and before you knew it, the bell rang, signaling the end of the lunch period.
Mingyu stood up, grabbing his things. “Hey, this was fun. Can I get your number? Maybe we can do this again sometime.”
Your heart raced as you fumbled to take out your phone. “Yeah, sure.”
After exchanging numbers, Mingyu flashed you one last smile before heading off to his next class. You sat there for a moment, still processing what had just happened. Then, without thinking, you grabbed your phone and dialed Seungmin.
“I think I found it,” you said as soon as he picked up.
Seungmin's voice on the other end was a mix of surprise and amusement. “Already? Wow, that was fast.”
Later that day, you met Seungmin again, and he couldn’t believe how quickly things had progressed. “So, what’s step two?” you asked, eager to hear more of his so-called wisdom.
Seungmin smirked. “Step two is to develop trust. It’s not easy, especially when you don’t know someone that well, but it’s crucial.”
You nodded, feeling a bit anxious. Trust wasn’t something you gave easily, but you were determined to see this through.
As days turned into weeks, you and Mingyu kept in touch, though not always frequently. He was busy with his senior projects, and you were swamped with your own studies, but whenever you did talk, there was a comfort and ease that made you feel safe. You found yourself trusting him, even when he wasn’t around.
One day, he invited you to a coffee shop off-campus. You said yes without hesitation. The atmosphere was cozy, with soft music playing in the background. As you sat across from Mingyu, sipping your drinks and chatting about anything and everything, you felt a warmth spread through you.
“I really enjoy spending time with you,” Mingyu said, his eyes twinkling as he looked at you. “Will you go out with me?”
You didn’t answer right away, but the smile on your face said it all.
The next time you saw Seungmin, he could tell something had changed. You were happier, lighter, and it was all thanks to Mingyu. “Alright, you’re ready for step three,” Seungmin said with a grin.
“What’s that?” you asked, still smiling from your last date.
“Build commitment. That’s the final step,” he said, though there was a hint of something else in his voice—something you couldn’t quite place. But you were too caught up in your happiness to notice.
As the days passed, you and Mingyu grew closer. You spent more time together, studying, laughing, sharing your dreams and fears. You felt safe with him, and that trust grew into something deeper. But every now and then, when you were with Seungmin, you’d catch him looking at you with an expression you couldn’t quite read.
One afternoon, you were in the library with Mingyu, your heads bent over your books. Seungmin walked by, and you looked up, catching his eye. He smiled, a soft, bittersweet smile that made your heart ache just a little. He was happy for you, that much was clear, but there was something more—something he wasn’t saying.
You watched him walk away, a thought nagging at the back of your mind. But before you could dwell on it, Mingyu nudged you, making you laugh with another one of his jokes. The moment passed, and you pushed the thought aside.
But deep down, you knew. You knew there was more to Seungmin’s advice than just friendly concern. And as you watched him disappear into the stacks of books, you realized that maybe, just maybe, the steps to love he’d shared with you were ones he’d already taken… with you.

i thought you loved me?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
☆pairing: 희승 x reader
☆word count: 384
☆warnings: angst, reader throws stuff at heeseung?
☆genre: angst, lovers to strangers
☆song suggestion: you were beautiful-day6
☆summary: heeseung came over for what you thought was a date, but you were so wrong
please, please cant we make this work?
you begged him, pulling on his hand, bringing your hand up to graze his face.
but he pushes your hand away, looking at you
like he had shut off.
from you, from everything.
he looks at you and repeats the cold break up letter his company made him say.
we aren’t working. we never did, and this relationship benefited neither of us. i need to focus on my career and not on this little relationship.
your heart broke, right then and there into a million pieces. you dropped to the floor and started sobbing.
did everything we did together mean nothing? the nights i snuck into your dorm as we giggled and talked about nothing, but yet everything. you tug at his pants edge
please no, no you still love me, right? you start chuckling as you stand up.
yeah, your company, your company made you say this right? right?
he never responds, his face as cold as it was when he walked into your apartment.
you stop talking and stand there
you and him
suddenly you feel a wave of anger. how could he? you knew he loved you, he adored you. he would never do this to you.
how could you? i thought we had something! you couldn’t even have the backbone to say no to your stupid company. i hate you! i hate you i hate you i hate you!
you start screaming at him as you start to throw things at him. pillows, blankets, anything you could get your hands on.
but he stood there. taking every hit, not saying a single word
you grabbed the plushie he won for you on your first date, and just as you were about to throw it in his face your adrenaline died out.
you just stood there until you muttered the three words that broke his heart.
get out now
you drop the plushie, the one that he won for you, not daring to pick it back up.
he stands there for a bit, and then bows to you.
and he walks out.
you drop to the floor, sobbing as you hold his plushie to your chest.
as soon as he walks out, he starts sobbing.
you didn’t want this, and neither did he.
never in a billion years

Messages from your higher self (repost)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pile 1
"Whenever you make a decision, you know how it will end don't you? You have all the conclusions already laid out about every situation you've ever been in, has that ever helped? Things come to an end but would you want things to go another way? I hope not, because otherwise you wouldn't be who you are today"
Pile 1, I feel like you're regretting something, the end of a chapter maybe one that was very important, maybe you're going to college next year or you're starting a new job, or maybe you're moving houses, either way your higher self-assures you that whatever you do, don't move forward with regret in your heart.
For some of you there may have been a romantic relationship that ended and the weight of that break-up is still heavy on your mind, manifesting itself physically, draining your energy, exhausting you. Your higher self is telling you to cherish the times andmemories you had with that person, people change and so do circumstances but thosememories won't.
Pile 2
"Playing the devil's advocate won't get you, his throne. You need to be more mindful of what you say. Have you been getting frequent headaches lately? Clear your surroundings and meditate it should help, also please drink water. You shine so bright then why do you fear the dark? It won't harm you if you accept it."
Have you been feeling simultaneously distressed yet exceedingly happy lately pile 2? It happens, your higher self is telling you that you're being pulled in two directions so choose the one that makes you exceedingly happy and unsuccess will follow. You already have everything you need, you *are* everything you need.
All the good things that you dream about and run after are right there all you need to do is open your eyes and look. Your higher self is encouraging you to be more comfortable in your own company, you don't need people around you constantly to validate you, you don't lneed external validation.
Pile 3
"The world isn't yours to hold nor is it yours to heal. Start asking for more and you shall receive it, especially when it comes to clarity. You can't be everyone's number 1 and that's okay, everyone has their own match, just because you're not first doesn't make you any less valuable as a person, don't let it affect your self-worth. Pretending to love someone won't make you love them, fake it till you make it doesn't apply here."
Oof pile 3 so many messages coming through here. I also got a song for you, "Beautiful Feeling" by Day6. I'm getting a lot of love messages for this pile, your higher self similarly to pile 2 encourages you to focus more on yourself, whilst focusing on platonic relationships around you. Nothing will ever satisfy you if you look through a lens of despair at everything. Even if 3 of your cups have fallen, you still have two left. Your higher self is telling you to completely feel your feelings, negative ones too but not to wallow because that won't have a positive impact.
Don't try to copy other people because everyone's unique, you're your own person and people appreciate and adore you for that. Your higher self also gives a message regarding blue butterflies and how if or when you see them, you should remember that they are right by your side. October may be an important month for you as well.

You took your paintbrush, dipping it into the wet pastel color on your palette. Taking it out once again and brushing it on the newly already traced canvas, and repeat. You've been going at it for what seemed to be forever, unknowing to the curious gaze of another person. Truth be told, drowning yourself in art makes you forget that reality had been a thing. Well — at least that was what your art teacher had told you. Finally finishing up your piece and smiling at it in satisfaction, a voice interrupts your quiet atmosphere.
"I didn't know my mom taught talented students." You jumped, looking to find the owner of such a delicate voice.
Turning around, you made eye contact with a girl. Looked to be around your age too. She looked like a puppy but what caught your eyes the most was the beret on her head. Seems quite like a fashionable person. Probably an idol if you may.
"Mrs Ahn has a daughter?" You looked quite perplexed.
The latter smiled, nodding her head to your question. She tried to lean against the chair beside her without even looking at what was on it, jumping at the same when you shouted for her to not lean on it but it was already too late. Blue paint was now her hand and she looked as though she was now filled with nothing but regret.
"The blue paint is washable if that's what you're wondering." She wordlessly nodded at your words.
"I guess I had been caught blue handed?" She wore a dorky grin, making you chuckle at a joke that you would have been judging if someone else said it.
It was rude to go back to painting while a guest was here — specially Mrs. Ahns daughter. The woman was basically like a mom to you too. She taught you to paint at such a young age. Hell you even once had a time where you'd go straight home just to fangirl at the thought of your favorite artist(who had retired at the time), teaching you things that not a lot of other artists could. In your eyes, she managed to capture the beauty of nature — which you had admired for as long as you can remember.
"What are you trying to paint?"
The sudden question made you wince, cursing yourself for getting so jumpy. You looked at your own painting before looking back at the puppy-like latter. "Whatever comes to mind." A simple answer, but you managed to make it work because now, she looked even more interested in the piece of artwork. "Looks like the park around here. Do you mainly focus on painting nature?" She asked once again, a soft smile replacing her curious gaze.
You were honestly speechless, unsure as to why she was curious about your artwork. If anything, she was the first person to actually take an interest by asking questions. Everyone else? They only admired it, simply only for the beauty of it and not for the meaning behind it.
"I do. I think it captures the meaning of life very well." You tried to sound so sweet with your tone, not wanting to sound robotic.
The sweet smile on your face made her eyes dilate, slowly reddening her neck. She had heard about her mom's favorite art student her whole life, training as an idol before becoming one and now that she was able to meet you, she felt a little too conscious about herself because you were honestly the most prettiest person she's ever laid her eyes on. Your hair had been blonde, looking freshly dyed because it looked as though it had been glowing. It makes sense, honestly. Being an artistic person must mean you feel the need to color everything the way you want it to look. It complimented you well, she thought.
"Have you ever decided to hang your paintings on the white walls of a museum?" She cursed herself eternally for wording it that way.
You pondered for a few seconds, nodding afterward. "Yeah. I have two hung currently in the museum downtown."
Her eyes widened, knowing exactly what museum you were talking about. "No way.. wait. Is it the riverish one with the cute koi fishes?" Riverish one? Koi fishes were on spot thought. You raised your brows as she fished out for something out of her pocket. "I actually took a picture of that a few months ago." She proudly stated, showing a picture of your art piece.
What caught your eyes the most was how pretty she looked, smiling besides your art piece. Your cheeks reddened, realizing how the both of you had been admiring the wrong thing.
"I guess I can call you a fan?" You joked.
She immediately nodded, happy to meet the person who created the art piece that made her smile for days. She didn't know what you laced into that art piece but it made her happy, seeing the koi fishes and the happy-like atmosphere. Plus the color looked more happier than the rest of the paintings in there. No offense to the other artists but it looked bland, emotionless and as though the only effort they made into it was to make it look good. She was no artist herself but she believed that you painted your whole emotion into your canvases.
"I actually adm—" Before she could finish, the door opened. "Oh! I see the two of you have already met each other. Yujin why didn't you tell me that you were gonna drop by?" Mrs. Ahn asked, a faux disappointed look on her face.
"I wanted it to be a surprise?" She answered, although it was more of a question.
A smile adorned your lips at their interaction. It was truly what they called a mother-daughter bond. Mentally sighing, you wondered how your life would have been if your mother wasn't so busy with the company that she had worked so hard on to form. It was big yes. Which you hated because even until now from your childhood, the only time she'd talk to you was when it was a reminder on how she needed a heir and not a "street" artist. How endearing of her. You began to pull at the corner of your canvas, feeling somewhat unsatisfied.
"Y/N?" You paused your action, turning to face Mrs. Ahn. "You can take a break. How about the two of you roam the city and have fun?"
A smile broke out. "I'm fine with that. I think I've been in this studio for too long."
"What time did you get here? I forgot to add but I'm Yujin by the way." Yujin asked, including the important detail last.
Yujin. You let it roll off your tongue. What a pretty name.
"I'm Y/N, and I got here around five in the morning." She looked shocked, her mom having a neutral reaction because this was a usual thing for her.
"Impressive." Yujin acted as though her schedule didn't include waking up at that time in order to get ready for her fully booked schedule. "Real impressive. Up for getting soft drinks?"
A giggle entered her ears as though it was music to her ears. What are you planning to be now? A music artist? "I actually prefer milk tea. Taro specifically." She nodded, mentally noting it down.
With that, the two of you made your way to your new destination. Her mom offering to stay in the studio in order to do a few cleanups.
The peaceful atmosphere was the only thing that caught Yujin off guard. She had expected a cute café to contain a lot of customers but then again — you seemed like the extroverted types who liked to indulge themselves inside a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Tapping her finer against the table without even knowing, she looks around in awe of the whole place. Maybe she should bring her members here.
"Are you gonna wear that forever or?" You jokingly asked, taking a long sip of your drink.
Yujin tried to ask what you were even talking about before feeling the mask on her face. Since there wasn't that much windows surrounding the two of you and because everyone looked to be in their own world, she took it off without hesitation. "Here's your drink." You smiled as she smiled back at you, muttering a 'thank you'. You took your seat in front of her. "So.." You began. "Do you always wear sunglasses and a mask whenever you go outside or is it just a one time thing?"
It was a joke obviously but that didn't stop Yujin from choking on her soda. She apologized, taking the handkerchief that you had offered before harshly wiping it against her face. "I thought you knew?" A frown formed. Clueless as to what she meant by that.
"Cute." She chuckled. "But I'm an idol basically."
The way she said it so casually made you feel small. Of course, you thought she was fit to be one. Just never expected her to actually be one.
"Why didn't I realize that.."
It was honestly the first time that a person she interacted with didn't know what her job was. You intrigued her. Leaning against the palm of her hands, she studied your features as if you were an art piece of her own. Clearly, you were made with time.
"I'm flattered. You find me interesting, but my eyes are up here." You interrupted her thoughts, causing her to discreetly cough because she was, in fact, not looking at your eyes but your lips. "I know. I was just admiring your collar. Very cute design." She tried to brush it off.
Your collar did look cute. She liked your fashion. It wasn't basic, definitely unique. It was almost as though you had just come straight out of a fairytale. Her clothes were exactly the opposite. So modern and so expensive looking. You would have thought that she was a runaway model if she hadn't exposed her actual job. As time with each other grew, she began to notice your small habits that you didn't even know you had. You poked your tongue through your left cheek whenever you'd feel flustered. You'd bite your lips whenever you were thinking. Your pupils dilated whenever you talked about something that intrigued you, and what caught her eyes the most was when you smiled at every dorky joke she made.
You radiated sunshine energy, and she wasn't complaining. She herself would radiate that energy — at least that was what most people told her, but you were so different. She wanted to be with you. Possibly — if she could, then she would. Your sweetness was overfilling her more than her soda did.
"I've actually created a lego flower, actually," you said in a proud tone, fishing your phone out of your purse. "I think it took me three days?"
She admired the pretty Lego set, eyes not missing out on a single detail. You looked so proud, too, that it would have been horrible of her to not show a single smile. "It's cute. Who was it for?" She unintentionally asked.
"For?" You laughed in a non offending way, of course. "I'm single as one can be. I don't think the thought of dating would be too good for me, honestly."
I'm curious.
"Why?"
You froze, wondering why she was even curious. "Uh.. I've actually never thought about it. I usually spend my time in the studio. Or at home when I have to."
She expected for you to have someone in your arms by now. But you being single made it honestly worse. Your beauty was out of this world and she knew that. Pretty sure she spent most of her time listening to your voice instead of talking. That is — unless she was the one who was questioning you for what you liked and what you disliked.
"Then would it sound selfish of me to say that I'd like to keep that lego flower for myself?" She became straightforward.
You didn't catch onto her intentions, leaning towards the action of rubbing your hands against your nape. "I don't know why you think it'd be selfish. I'd obviously like to gift it to you." Her cheeks reddened, feeling even more satisfied with your answer.
"I'll keep an eye out for it, okay?" She wanted to feel assured that you would send her the Lego flower that spent days just to finish. "Okay."
Obviously, she was not gonna sit back and take away your progress without giving you something in return. Maybe a new set of palettes, along with paint, would do just the right gift. Yet again, you seemed to have a lot judging from how you basically grew up painting. What would you have liked? She thought.
It was simple. You obviously wanted someone who you could call a friend.
"Should we go now? I'm finished." You sent a dopey smile.
Yujin immediately nodded, taking your drink in order to throw it in the recycle bin. The two of you began to head out, trying to think of more things that you could do with each other. Just like in the animated shows, a light bulb formed above Yujin's head, showing that she, in fact, had a good place to go to.
"Let's go," She took your hands and interlocked it with her before speeding up her pace. "Follow me."
You did so, cheeks once again reddening at the sudden physical contact.
"The park?" You looked around, wondering why she wanted to go here.
It was pretty. It was totally your thing, but it was also random. Yujin hurriedly made you sit on the bench, hoping that you had also brought along the items that were needed in order for her plan to work.
"Did you bring your paint kit..? Or however you cute artists call it." She asked with sparks in her eyes.
You chuckled, nodding before taking out the things that she had requested. Your notebook and a pen. It was obviously not a 'painting kit', but she obviously wanted something that involved art. "I expected a paint brush and a canvas.. but that'll do." She clapped her hands together in excitement.
"Okay, can I borrow those?" You gave it, forgetting that you were supposed to be protective of it because it held every precious memory that you drew. From your childhood even.
Yujin stood up in front of you, trying to think of where she should start. You let out a 'ahh', finally realizing what she had been trying to do the entire time. First, she looked at your eyes. A sketch added. Your jawline. Another sketch added. It went on for what seemed like an eternity until she got to part where she had been waiting to draw because it allowed her to stare freely at it without you thinking she was weird. Which you obviously would never think. Yujin stared right into your lips, pausing her sketch because now — she had been tracing it in her mind. Her strong gaze sent chills down your spine, wondering what stopped her from sketching.
"Uh.. yeah right!" She awkwardly laughed, continuing on with her sketch.
Odd.
Finally finishing it up, she showed it to you with a proud smile. You were an artist and had high expectations, but the sketch that she presented in front of you made you giggle. With a fake huff, she hid her sketch of you behind her back. "I was expecting a compliment.." She pretended to act as though she was annoyed by your reaction.
You couldn't help but to snort. "Yeah. It's cute."
"Because it's a drawing of you," She lazily smiled, "which I dare to say that a drawing of you from an unexperienced beginner like me would make it seem as though it wasn't my first time."
It was a compliment. She was complimenting your unearthly looks. You couldn't help but turn red, looking elsewhere in fear of having to see the stars in her eyes whenever she spoke highly of you.
"I think that if I was an art created by you, I'd be the one admiring you back instead." Sincerity had been evident in her tone.
You usually had no trouble flirting back — but the girl was on a whole nother of leaving you speechless. Butterflies that you didn't even know existed were now all over the place. Was she doing this on purpose? You didn't know but you liked it.
"Well," She smiled innocently, asking if it she hadn't just made your insides flutter, "We should head back to my mom's studio. I'm sure she has a few students already."
You nodded as she handed your notebook with a wink. She was about the become the death of you.
"How'd it go?" Mrs. Ahn asked.
You had been a blushing mess and Yujin had been the cause of it. Yujin simply smiled, "It was great. I get why she's your favorite student." The sudden urge to run out of the room was big.
Yujin's mom smiled, showing a resemblance of Yujin's smile. "I'm glad. She really doesn't like to go out often with other people around her age."
"Oh?" Yujin looked over to you with a cocky grin.
You jokingly rolled your eyes at her, not wanting to raise her confidence. "I'll be with the other students.. um, helping out with their painting skills." You informed.
"I'll get going too mom," Yujin sent a smile at her mom before hurrying up in order to catch up with you who made sure to take big steps so she wouldn't.
"Eh? When was she able to paint?" Mrs. Ahn asked, clicking her tongue after realizing that her daughter was now head over heels for her favorite student. What a troublemaker.

Doyoung of K-pop boyband NCT opens up to NME about the pop-rock sound of his debut album 'Youth', working with bandmate Taeyong and more
NCT’s Doyoung nears 30, he’s been thinking of the ocean. Specifically, what it looks like from afar. That’s why the Korean title of the singer’s first solo album, ‘Youth’, includes the word ‘포말’, or sea foam. Seen too close, the cresting tide is chaotic, even violent; but, step back, and there’s beauty in that battle on the swirling waves. It’s an apt metaphor for a look back on a chapter of your life, taken from a slight remove – where the rough current fades into mere memory.
‘Youth’ is coloured by time and the perspective that it’s given Doyoung. “I made a conscious effort to really show who I am as a person,” he says of the album over a late night Zoom with NME. “I had to ask myself, ‘What is the story that I have to share? What do I want to represent at this stage in my life?’ I thought about it for a while and the word ‘youth’ came to me.”
The concept of youth is a familiar bedfellow for the K-pop artist transitioning into early adulthood, yet in the blue hour of his late twenties, Doyoung’s got a little more wisdom to shade between those lines. In his own words, the spirit of ‘Youth’ is more “spring night” than “spring morning”: electric guitar riffs may lift his voice up like the warm breeze, but the wistful lyrics are that welcoming spring sun gently sliding away. It’s the story of youth, as told from the end.
Once he had the idea for the album, it was like a faucet had been opened; things just flowed out. Before, his raw lyrical sketches had been rejected by the company, but, on ‘Youth’, Doyoung claims two writing credits (warm salve ‘From Little Wave’ and ‘Beginning’, an overture which brims with tender emotion), a fact he chalks up to a fresh honesty in their storytelling. This go-around, he found it was easier to tap into his “genuine experiences and sincere feelings”, and that growth was clear to SM Entertainment’s staff – especially after Doyoung tirelessly revised the album opener.
Our brief video call takes place a couple of hours after the official release of ‘Youth’. While speaking, and while listening to the interpreter relay his thoughts, Doyoung schools his face into the composure of a calm lake; he’s thoughtful, considered. Here is someone who’s had time to think through what he wants to say, though he just can’t help but make a few more last minute revisions. “I think it’s natural for there to be a difference in quality,” he says, pausing a beat, then edits himself: “Is that the right word?”
By contrast, there’s one word he definitively, and continuously, circles back to throughout our conversation: “naturally”. It’s how he describes the passage of time, but it’s also how he describes writing and recording. To hear him tell it, you would think everything simply clicked into place. The reality is, it takes a lot of effort to sound as effortless as Doyoung: in making the album, he crafted PowerPoint slides with his ideas, passed a birthday in the recording booth and spent hours on single lines. His hands are in every part of ‘Youth’, top to bottom.
Doyoung has said sub-group NCT 127’s music isn’t always his personal cup of tea, but releases from K-pop groups tend to be by committee; compromise is a necessity. On ‘Youth’, however, “the working process was certainly different without that group discussion or input of the other members”, Doyoung says. More control and responsibility, he adds, “pushed me to really focus on myself, my thoughts, and follow where the music was leading me”.
The frontman of a high-school band prior to becoming an idol trainee, Doyoung has long loved the sentimental soft rock and pop stylings of Korean bands like Hoppipolla, Daybreak and Day6. To recreate their magic, he asked SM’s A&R team to enlist mainly Korean talent for the album – breaking from the global pool they typically tap on. That began with Lucy bassist Cho Wonsang (“an artist-composer I’ve always admired”) sending Doyoung the demo for single ‘Little Light’, while other credits include prolific SM Entertainment producer Kenzie and composer Seo Dong Hwan, a collaborator of IU and AKMU’s Lee Suhyun.
Another of Doyoung’s close confidants during the process will be familiar to fans: NCT 127 groupmate and leader Taeyong. The two idols have debuted together twice: once with NCT U in April 2016, and again three months later as a part of NCT 127. Both introductory songs – hip-hop-trap hybrid ‘The 7th Sense’ and the blaring, rap-led ‘Fire Truck’ – have since been proclaimed as ahead of their time, chaotic disruptors of K-pop’s bias toward bubbly boy groups in the mid-2010s. But, at the time, the NCT units struggled to make inroads with the general public.
When Taeyong released his solo project in 2023, during an era of K-pop minimalism, the dirty bass and all-around eccentricities raised eyebrows – but it spoke to who Taeyong is as an artist, which makes him fit to advise on turning a blind eye to trends. “We talked through what it means to put together and release a solo album, and what challenges I could expect in the process,” Doyoung says. “I think Taeyong hyung definitely offered me more cautionary, realistic advice on what to expect.”
Because once the sound for ‘Youth’ was in place, the pressure was on. Sans the expected hallmarks of K-pop releases like sticky pop hooks and choreography, the quality of the music had to speak for itself. A docuseries about the creation of ‘Youth’ shows Doyoung tempering his hopes: What if, he asks, no one listens? Yet the slow burn rise of NCT has imparted patience and persistence to him. “Nice music will be loved eventually,” he concluded. “So if people don’t like the song [‘Little Light’] immediately, I have this feeling, one day it will be loved.”
In going after that timelessness, ‘Youth’ finds itself obsessed with time’s steady march. Cozy coffee shop tune ‘Time Machine’, written by NCT bandmate Mark and featuring Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon, is a duet between lovers who accept that, were they to turn back the years, everything would turn out the same. A past self takes shape over his shoulder on the atmospheric banger ‘Lost in California’, while on the tender ballad ‘Rewind’, where Doyoung’s crystalline vocals are in top form, it’s someone else just out of reach: “When I reminisce about that day / The world quietly flows backwards / Your figure as you looked back / At the disappearing end of the street.”
Given the context, it makes sense that time would be on Doyoung’s mind: At the tail end of winter, NCT 127 performed together as a full group for the last time (that is, for a while). “With Taeyong hyung enlisting for his military service, there came a point where all of us had to think about when we would next tour as the complete team,” Doyoung says. Ever a sensitive soul, he ended a couple of concerts in tears. “Because of that uncertainty, I couldn’t help but feel more sentimental,” he adds.
Part of the sadness – for fans and members – was a feeling that NCT 127 had left some global success on the table, thanks to COVID-19. Just as the members were gaining momentum stateside with English singles and a promised US tour, a stop sign was firmly planted at their feet. “When looking back on our nine years,” Doyoung said during one of his send-offs, “there might be people who feel regret, who feel that we didn’t succeed, who wonder how it would be if the timing was better”. But that’s never been the way he sees it.
“I think achieving success really depends on how you define it,” Doyoung says now. “To me, a successful artist is someone who is able to share their approach to music, their artistry and be recognised for their unique style by their audience. It’s that moment where a listener can say, ‘This artist, this group, makes this kind of music.’ By my definition, I think I can safely say that NCT 127 has reached a level of success.”
And as for himself? “When I was younger, thinking about what life had in store for me, the idea that I wanted to become a singer really grounded me,” Doyoung says. “My dream of becoming an artist who will be remembered for a long time gave me the direction for how I wanted to live my life.”
He feels an immense pride for that inner child, “for committing to a life of music, for working towards that dream”, without a guarantee of success – especially now, after it’s been realised. “I am hoping I can be recognised for my own style and tone, that I can make a name with my approach,” he continues. “That’s how I would define success for myself.” It’s spoken like someone who knows there’s only so much he can control; the rest, as always, is up to time.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
part 1! part 2!
Seungmin always loved you.
You were just the oblivious one who never saw it. A genius in academics, but when it came to matters of the heart, you were completely clueless.
He always showed you how much he cared, but you never noticed.
He took care of you in ways that seemed ordinary to you because Seungmin was always caring for the people he loved. But what you didn't realize was that Seungmin only acted that way toward you. He wasn't as attentive to everyone else; his gentle ruffling of your hair, his sincere compliments like, "You're pretty," and the warm hugs he would give you—all of it was just for you.
And yet, you convinced yourself it was nothing special. You believed he treated everyone that way, so you hid your feelings as best you could. You ignored the flutter in your chest when he touched your hair, the tingling in your stomach when he complimented you, and the rapid beat of your heart whenever he hugged you. You thought these were all just friendly gestures.
when you saw Seungmin smiling sweetly at a classmate one day, offering to carry her bag. That was the moment you decided you would never, ever tell him how you felt. What if he laughed at you for being a delusional friend?
Little did you know, Seungmin had only helped your classmate because she was sick. There was nothing more to it, but you didn’t realize that at the time.
Seungmin was the reason you met everyone else. He was your friend since childhood, and when you both entered middle school, he introduced you to his seven friends. You were forever grateful to him for bringing these amazing people into your life.
When college came around and everyone chose different paths, Seungmin stayed by your side, taking the same course as you. Changbin joined as well, drawn by his love for solving problems.
Through it all, Seungmin remained close, and you were always thankful for his presence. But after that party, everything changed.
"You know, I realized I should have kept you to myself," Seungmin had said, his voice slightly slurred from the alcohol, but his words clear and deliberate.
He might have been drunk, but you knew he meant what he said. And that was when you finally realized Seungmin liked you.
You didn’t know how to react, especially knowing the feelings of your other friends. So instead of feeling joy that the person you liked also liked you, you were terrified.
When you walked into class one day, you felt two pairs of eyes on you—Changbin's and Seungmin's. You quickly looked down as you took your seat.
"My girl, you look stressed again," your friend Yuji remarked loudly, her usual energetic tone cutting through the quiet classroom.
"I'm okay," you replied, forcing a smile even though your heart was still heavy from the events of the party.
But Yuji wasn’t easily convinced. She narrowed her eyes, studying you carefully. "Well… you don't look okay to me," she said, her voice laced with concern. She was about to ask more, but thankfully, the professor walked in, diverting her attention.
You sighed in relief, though your mind was far from at ease. As the lecture began, you tried to focus, but your thoughts kept wandering back to the party, and the confusing mess of emotions swirling inside you. You were so lost in thought that you didn’t even hear the professor calling your name.
It wasn’t until the entire class turned to look at you that you snapped back to reality, heat rushing to your face as you stammered an apology. You sunk lower in your seat, trying to hide from the dozens of curious eyes still watching you.
After class, you hurriedly packed your things, eager to escape before Yuji could start questioning you again. But as you zipped up your bag, she approached you, her usual bright smile replaced with something more thoughtful.
Without a word, she placed two concert tickets on your desk, the ones you both had been excited about for weeks. You stared at them, then at her, confusion clear in your eyes.
“Go to the concert with Seungmin,” she said, her tone light, but her eyes watched you closely, waiting for your reaction.
Your heart stopped.
“What?” you whispered, disbelief creeping into your voice. You couldn’t have heard her right.
Yuji nodded toward the tickets. “You should go with him.”
You felt your pulse quicken, shock mixing with a twinge of panic. Yuji had always been vocal about her feelings for Seungmin—so much so that you had convinced yourself to bury your own feelings for him. And now, here she was, offering you the two tickets you knew she valued so much.
“You—what are you talking about?” you asked, your voice barely above a whisper, as if speaking any louder might break the fragile reality around you.
She smiled gently, but there was a knowing look in her eyes. “Of course, I was just teasing about me and Seungmin. But I’ve always known he liked you.”
The room seemed to spin for a moment as you tried to process what she was saying. How could she just… give up like that? And for you?
“Yuji, I… I can’t take these,” you stammered, pushing the tickets back toward her. “You’ve been looking forward to this concert for weeks. And… you like Seungmin.”
Yuji laughed softly, shaking her head. “It’s not about that. I know what’s really important.”
She pushed the tickets back to you with a firm yet understanding look. “Take him to the concert. I can always get another ticket.”
You stared at her, still in shock, trying to comprehend the magnitude of her gesture. It was almost too much to believe, and your mind raced with a thousand thoughts. You had been so sure that Yuji was deeply in love with Seungmin, and now she was practically pushing you into his arms.
But you couldn’t do it. Not like this.
“Yuji… I’m really grateful. But… I think going with him would be a bad idea,” you replied, your voice heavy with the sadness of everything left unsaid.
Yuji’s smile faltered, a flicker of concern passing over her features. She knew there was more to this story, and as much as you wanted to avoid it, you knew that conversation was inevitable.
Later that evening, you invited Yuji to your apartment, unable to hold in the turmoil any longer. The cozy warmth of your space offered a safe haven as you both settled on the couch, surrounded by the familiarity of your shared memories. It was here, in this comforting atmosphere, that you finally let the floodgates open.
"I don’t even know where to start," you admitted, your voice trembling as you stared at your hands, twisting them nervously.
Yuji reached out, her touch gentle and reassuring as she held your hands in hers. "Start from the beginning," she urged softly, her eyes full of understanding.
Taking a deep breath, you began to recount everything—the mysterious blue sticky note you found tucked into your binder, the tension at the party, and the whirlwind of emotions that followed. Yuji listened intently, her expression growing more serious with each word you spoke.
When you finally finished, you felt a heavy weight lift off your chest, but it was quickly replaced by a new kind of uncertainty. Yuji squeezed your hands, her gaze searching your face.
"You can’t choose, can you?" she asked, her voice filled with a mix of empathy and disbelief.
You shook your head slowly, the words catching in your throat. "It feels wrong to choose… like no matter what I do, someone will get hurt."
Yuji’s eyes softened, but there was a hint of concern there too. "But you have someone in mind, don’t you? Someone you feel more for?"
The question hung in the air between you, and you felt your heart constrict painfully. You couldn’t bring yourself to answer, so instead, you bowed your head, your silence speaking louder than any words could.
Yuji sighed, her disbelief evident as she tried to process the situation. "It’s better not to choose than to hurt anybody," you whispered, your voice barely audible, as if saying it out loud would make it more real.
"And what about you?" Yuji’s question was gentle, but it hit you like a ton of bricks. Her concern for you was evident, and it only made the situation more complicated.
"I’m okay," you lied, offering her a weak smile that didn’t reach your eyes. You knew it wasn’t convincing, but it was all you could manage.
Yuji wasn’t fooled. "Okay with hurting yourself?" she asked, her tone laced with worry. She could see right through your facade, and it broke her heart to see you like this.
You didn’t respond, and the silence between you two was heavy with unspoken truths. Yuji squeezed your hands once more, a silent promise that she was there for you, no matter what.
The day of the concert arrived, and as you stood at the entrance, you couldn’t shake the nervousness that gnawed at you. You checked your watch anxiously, your heart racing. 'Why isn’t Yuji here yet? The concert’s about to start,' you thought, worry creeping into your mind as you dialed her number.
Just as you were about to press call, you spotted a familiar figure approaching from afar. Your breath caught in your throat as Seungmin came into view, his new cut hairstyle catching the light. It was the very style you had talked about last time, and the sight of it sent a pang of emotion through you.
He smiled as he approached, closing the distance between you two with a calm, easy confidence that only made your heart race faster. His hands were tucked into the pockets of his jacket as he stopped a few feet away, his eyes never leaving yours.
"Have you seen Yuji?" you asked, trying to keep the unease out of your voice, but the sinking feeling in your gut told you something wasn’t right.
Seungmin hesitated for a brief moment, but then he spoke, his tone light, almost playful. "I think she won’t be coming," he said, feigning cluelessness, but there was something in his eyes that gave him away.
"Why?" you pouted, the disbelief evident in your tone. You couldn’t understand why Yuji would bail on such an important event, especially after everything that had happened.
In reality, Seungmin had asked Yuji to let him take her place, promising to do her assignments for a month in return. He didn’t want to miss this opportunity, not after everything you had been through together.
"You’ve been avoiding me," Seungmin said, his gaze fixed on you, his voice soft but firm. It wasn’t an accusation, just a simple truth.
You couldn’t meet his eyes, so you looked away, the weight of everything pressing down on you once more. The silence between you grew, filled with everything that had been left unsaid.
Without another word, Seungmin reached out and gently took your hand in his, his touch warm and reassuring. "Let’s go. The concert is starting," he said, his voice calm, as if this was just another day.
With no other choice, you followed him into the venue, your heart pounding in your chest.
The concert began, and the energy in the air was electric. Seungmin, stood out in the crowd, and despite everything, you couldn’t help but notice how effortlessly he fit into this scene. The band started playing, and though it was your favorite, you couldn’t bring yourself to sing along. The awkwardness between you two hung heavily in the air, a reminder of all the unresolved emotions between you.
Seungmin, determined to break the tension, began making jokes, his voice rising above the music. "You know, I can sing better than that," he teased, his tone playful as he impersonated the voices on stage. His antics were so ridiculous that you couldn’t help but laugh, the sound breaking through the heavy atmosphere. Slowly but surely, everything started to feel normal again, like it always did when Seungmin was around.
When the band played your favorite song, You Were Beautiful by Day6, you couldn’t help but sing along, your voice soft at first, then growing stronger as the song went on. Seungmin stood beside you, singing with you, his voice blending with yours in perfect harmony.
Without thinking, you wrapped one arm around his waist, waving your lightstick with the other, and he did the same, holding you close as the music filled the air. It was a moment of pure, unspoken connection, one that neither of you wanted to end.
As the lyrics washed over you, you glanced up at him, your heart aching with all the words you couldn’t say. If it were just about you, you would have chosen him. But love was never that simple, and the complexities of your situation weighed heavily on your heart.
You buried your feelings deep, trying to hide the pain that threatened to overwhelm you.
"I’m always in love with you," Seungmin whispered suddenly, his words cutting through the music, breaking the silence between you. His voice was steady, but there was a vulnerability in his eyes that you had never seen before.
You knew it, after everything that happened, but hearing it still surprised you, sending a shockwave through your system. After a long pause, you finally replied, "Me too." Your voice was barely above a whisper, and the words felt like a confession you weren’t ready to make. You smiled, but it didn’t reach your eyes. "But we shouldn’t."
Seungmin, always understanding, simply nodded. He didn’t push, didn’t try to convince you otherwise. He knew how complicated everything was, and he wasn’t about to make it harder for you.
You smiled back, grateful that he now knew how you felt. And even though it wasn’t the beautiful, happy ending you had once dreamed of, it was enough. He understood you, and that was all you could ask for.
It wasn’t the most beautiful moment of your life, but in that instant, you felt content, knowing that Seungmin would always be there for you, even if things didn’t turn out the way either of you had hoped. And that, in its own way, was a kind of beautiful.

Most-Listened of March 2024
[last month]
This was such an exciting month of releases--Purplekiss, Day6, BLEACHERS?? Chung Ha gave us a couple of songs, Nina Suárez came back out of nowhere, Lucy dropped a single, OLIVIA RODRIGO IS BACK?? I've been super excited for the J-Hope album, too, but I haven't been emotionally ready to check it out, yet, since I want to have the energy to really love it! Not to mention the Seori EP-- PLUS Bol4 and StayC both dropped some covers of huge 2019 k-pop hits.
And that isn't all. The highlights of my month were seeing Bruce Springsteen (only my favorite artist ever.) and Gregory Alan Isakov in concert(s)! So honestly, I'm a little overwhelmed by just how exciting music is right now. (It doesn't help that this month gave me my first album of the year candidate, too!!) This post will be my opportunity to go a little wild, then :)
1. Leopardos -- Ine Güemes
I should not enjoy this listening experience as much as I do. That whistling noise should annoy me by now, after all these listens, right? ... Right? Nope. I love it. This song is so soothing, it's literally the musical equivalent of a deep breath.
2. Appaloosa Bones -- Gregory Alan Isakov
Concert prep + THE sulking song this month. Look, I'm a guy who needs my daily floor time (floor time. perhaps you require it.), and it always involves considerable sulking. (At this rate, you're gonna see a sulking song on this list every single month. It's a tradition now!) I've been losing it about "Was I that gone? / Man, I hope not / Glad you found me when you did" and "The pages slow / in the room I called your name" and "They haven't made no pill / To get us across the winter time" ...
3. All Things End -- Hozier
You know what ended? My eight-week class. *sigh of relief* All things end, truly! Now I just need the reminder that this semester will end, too...
4. Death To My Hometown -- Bruce Springsteen
I'd never heard this one before, but I ASCENDED when I heard it live (the horns section was. fantastic.) and I left it on repeat all month post-concert.
5. The Ledge -- Fleetwood Mac
This song makes me proud of my music taste, honestly--see, I can like weird experimental stuff, too! It sounds wonderfully, comfortingly crowded--like the ambient noise from a nearby café, or like falling asleep with the TV on. I don't know, it's just a feeling I find myself really enjoying. I'm also SO deeply in love with the round-style singing (see: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" rounds in middle school choir) Fleetwood Mac sometimes does (see: my obsession with "Paper Doll"), and they do it in this song !!
6. I Don't Want to Know -- Fleetwood Mac
I like this one for the same reason I like "Second Hand News"--that cheerful self-deprecation just never fails to draw me in. ("Second Hand News" is still better, though!)
7. Smart -- Le Sserafim
Does anyone NOT like this song? I missed the Eve Psyche hype train last year, so this one's hitting me doubly hard. I think the sweeter tone of "Smart" suits Le Sserafim's vocals much better, and the production is just plain adorable! This has been my go-to song during classes, when I need something to cheer me up without making me too overwhelmed.
8. Luz -- Ine Güemes
That vocal processing is SUCH a standout--so soft and hazy and fluffy, just a fascinating texture when you really focus on it, but endlessly pleasant when you leave it on loop and zone out, too. (Look, I REALLY loved this album this month.)
9. Nota de Voz -- Los Hermanos Laser
Classic indie boy music! I like "Azul Plateado" from this album, too, and I have a feeling the whole album will hit for me during the summer--I tend to like that exhausted-sounding alt-rock stuff a whole lot around July & August :)
10. Light Sprite -- Baby Pantera, Isabella Lovestory
Thanks for the rec, @pocima !!
11. I Am Right On Time -- Bleachers
This is a weirdly muted album for Bleachers (especially on the heels of "Stop Making This Hurt" and "How Dare You Want More" from their last album), and this is the most weirdly muted of them all--I really feel like it should be... more, somehow? But it's still quite a cathartic listening experience, and I keep coming back to it!
12. Really Like You -- Gyubin
I've started giving myself 30 minutes of reading time in the mornings, to help me wake up and not be completely miserable about it, so I've been reading a whole bunch of webtoons. (Hell, maybe I'll read a book one day!) This one's the perfect cutesy webtoon soundtrack, and I think it might be here because I left it on repeat while reading Blooming Season?? (I just finished catching up with Jackson's Diary, and I think I'm gonna start Death of a Pop Star next!) Anyway, Gyubin sounds lovely here, can't wait for a comeback!
13. Self Respect -- Bleachers
The production on this song is just SO exciting overall!! But I'm mostly here for the saxophone. God, it's not even that much of the song but it's gorgeous !!!
14. Nieve Sin Fin -- Ine Güemes
Nice aesthetic piano :)
15. Rush -- Twice
I love how dizzying this song is--it's chaotic and overwhelming in the most wonderful way! I was a little disappointed by it when I first listened to the album, I think because their vocals here are much softer than usual. When I let myself get swept away in the production, though, I totally get the appeal.
Five-Star Songs (& Albums!) This Month
BBB -- Purplekiss (the tiktok-music trend finally got me last year--against my will, admittedly. unfortunately for me, "bbb" is a fantastic example of that easy-listening, viral-tiktok sound from a group i'm already obsessed with, so of course i'm a huge fan. great vocal performances and silky songwriting? yeah, it's great--the muted aesthetic doesn't bug me at all--and i actually kind of love the super-short horn sections in the chorus. they're surprisingly full-sounding!)
Beam Beam -- Jeon Soyeon (i didn't get this one at all when it first came out, but i've warmed up to it over the years--and this month it just HIT. it's the perfect showcase of soyeon's energy, and it's such a rush!!)
Death To My Hometown -- Bruce Springsteen (five stars bc it has the words "robber barons" in it!!)
Girl I've Always Been -- Olivia Rodrigo (i keep underestimating olivia rodrigo's power as a performer. of course she could make this country-sounding track work. of course she could make it my favorite from the album in an instant. who am i to question??)
Hey Joe -- Bleachers (a sing-along for the politically disillusioned. happy 2024, fellow usamericans. well, at least the harmonies here are delightful!)
Jesus is Dead -- Bleachers (i mentioned that this album is unusually muted for bleachers--not dull as in 'boring in terms of production or songwriting', but dull as in dead-eyed and zombie-like. the vocal delivery, especially, is unusually bland and flat. "jesus is dead" is definitely the best use of this half-asleep, grayscale aesthetic on the album--a song as hopeless and monotone as its delivery. it's strange and stylish and messy, too, AND there's also a sax solo ?? and it works great ?? i admire it so so so much--i'm very surprised this didn't make the most-listened list, i've been looping it a whole bunch.)
The Ledge -- Fleetwood Mac
Self Respect -- Bleachers (re: saxophone.)
White Rabbit -- Jefferson Airplane (i don't think it's much of a hot take at all to say this one is fantastic. i heard it for the first time in february, and i've been completely obsessed since!!)
Heráldica -- Saramalacara (okay, i've had like. a week. with this album, but it was love at first listen--and "humo" already had my heart, anyway. the atmospherics are breathtaking, the production crisp and intense, and saramalacara's voice // the vocal production here fits SO well!! there's a song called ".tumblr" that's definitely worth checking out, though i enjoy every song on here !! except "_cuervos". i admire that one but god it disturbs me i never want to hear it again.)
Qué Nos Mantiene Despiertos -- Ine Güemes (first album of the year candidate of 2024 !!! not much of a surprise, i'm sure, given my top 15. more breathtaking atmospherics, but in the exact opposite direction of heráldica! this album is full of really unique textures, but all that chaos doesn't make it any less soothing. each song is distinct, but they all come together into this sweet, fluffy youtube-lofi-mix type of experience--and look, i'm a college student. could i ask for anything more in an album?)
