i have always been overly fond of summer in phoenix. i'd say it's my favorite season.

this is an unpopular opinion, of course. the heat and dryness is suffocating, a hand grabbing you in his fist and refusing to let go. there's something special about how quiet it gets. when all the college students go home for the summer, when the yellow leaves fall from their trees. signifying change. death. my own death, a little bit.

i spend summer days laying by the pool, smelling a little bit of sunscreen no matter how many showers i take. i take my dog to the park (she's wearing shoes) and lay face first in the dark emerald grass, the arizona birds loud and obnoxious, singing sad songs. i smoke cigarettes on the balcony when i am particularly sad, the heat forcing me to lounge in a bra and comfy shorts. i miss everyone who has left. i drink pink moscato out of a pig glass and do my best not to drunk text him. i turn up the ac all the way as my long hair dries from a shower, lavender oil hanging in the stale air of my apartment. the palm trees and cacti stand tall all around me, unrelenting, even when it gets over 110. it reminds me of me.

the constant sun makes me feel like there is a starved dog gone feral in the back of my throat. it is so angry at the world and the hands that feed it, and when i open my mouth it barks and scares everyone away. i can't blame you for running, not really. i'd run too. but if i keep swallowing my anger back, it's going to choke me. not in a fun way.

when i can, i drive north. not often. not with gas prices like this. but i drive north, usually alone, to sedona, payson, camp verde, strawberry, prescott, flagstaff. wherever my honda accord is willing to take me. occasionally i bring my silly dog, but she has anxiety worse than i do, and i try to avoid bringing her to new strange places. i absorb the pine trees, smell the cool clean air, stare at the mountains so tall wispy clouds pierce through the tops. i drive off beaten dusty paths and find a secluded place to shriek and scream and cry and throw rocks into rivers. after its done, i dunk myself in the icy water, and i let the sun dry me like i'm laundry hanging from a clothespin.

summer is a time of solitude, of wallowing in the past but trying not to, of running until i pass out a little bit (i tell myself it's not an issue). you feel it, don't you? the light pouring out of me, leaking, a broken pipe you don't want to fix. that warmth and wonder, dwindling and waning. how much do i have left in me? how long can i keep burning when it's even hotter outside?
