you said in your post about egypt that you wished people would pay more attention to other spots- would you mind telling us about those spots? like, in your opinion, what are the most beautiful things in egypt?
!!! IM SO GLAD YOU ASKED
usually people like to visit the pyramids, the library of alexandria and alexandrian beaches and some temples in upper egypt which yk understandable they're incredible, but there's so much more to see!!
in the heart of cairo there's so many beautiful historic religious places to visit. coptic cairo is stunning, i recommend anyone visiting egypt to go visit a coptic church if they can the architecture will blow you awayyy my parents took me to visit one when i was really young and to this day it's one of my favorite memories of egypt. and the mosques too! we have some of the oldest mosques in africa they're definitely worth a visit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the siwa oasis!! i haven't been there myself and i'm literally never not salty about it😭 every time we try to plan a trip there something comes up </3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
on the north coast, alex is by far the most visited city (for good reason) but in terms of beaches and resorts i prefer marsa matrouh it's less crowded, and the water is so clear it's insane
Tumblr media Tumblr media
on the red sea sharm el sheikh is a mustttt visit destination, i went snorkeling there for the first time and got see the pretty coral reefs it's one of my favorite places everrrr in egypt <33
Tumblr media
taba is also another place in sinai that looks freaking unreal but i haven't been there yet
i haven't been to upper egypt unfortunately but aside from visiting the famous temples in luxor and aswan i really want to see nubian architecture in person, it's so colorful and full of life

1902-1903 Postcards
In December 1902, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig began his trip to India and Egypt. During his journey, he sent his daughter, Princess Elisabeth of Hesse, numerous postcards, which are preserved in the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt.
When he departed in December 1902, Ernst Ludwig left his first “Gruss Haus Darmstadt” postcard for his beloved daughter, where he wrote in English: “Goodbye my darling. God bless you. Papa’s love is always near you, sleeping or walking."
On the outward journey, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig sent numerous postcards to Elisabeth, e.g. “tender kisses” from Paris or a picture of his hotel in Marseille with details of his balcony.
Tumblr media
On the postcard above, written on board the Arabia on December 16, 1902, Ernst Ludwig told his daughter: "I send you a big kiss. Till now the weather was bad & I was seasick but now it is lovely & the sun is shinning & it is warm. I saw flying fish. A big kiss from Papa.” He celebrated Christmas on board the "Arabia" and Elisabeth sent him and his entourage a Christmas card.
On January 1, 1903, Ernst Ludwig enthusiastically reported to his daughter about his impressions from Delhi: “All those many people dressed in every color of the rainbow. It was lovely. A big kiss from Papa.” The cards are mostly in black and white, but for her daughter to get a better impression, he also described the colours of everything he saw.
Tumblr media
On the postcard above, written on January 15, 1903, he wrote: "This lovely place is all in white marble with a blue (sky ?) & lots of green parrots flying about & screaming. They are green with red beak & a red ring round their necks. Papa"
Almost every day he sent his daughter postcards with picturesque pictures and short, sweet greetings. Postcards with motifs that were exotic to Elisabeth document his journey to destinations in northern India that are still classic today, such as Benares, Agra with the Taj Mahal, Jaipur and Fatehpur Sikri.
At the end of February, Ernst Ludwig finally began his return journey - but made a stopover in Egypt. On March 5, 1903, on a postcard from the Shephard's Hotel, the most famous luxury hotel in Cairo at that time, Ernst Ludwig announced to his daughter what should not be missed on a trip to Egypt: “Today, I go for a week up the Nile.”
On March 11, 1903, he sent birthday greetings to Elisabeth on a card from Aswan. He also visited Luxor and Karnak and, of course, the pyramids of Giza at the end.
Tumblr media
On the postcard above, written on March 22, 1903, he proudly reported to Elisabeth about his climb to the pyramids: "I klimbed (sic.) up the pyramid yesterday & got very out of breath. Today I krept (sic.) into the inside. It was very difficult because all was so very slippery. Papa."
Tumblr media
On the postcard above, written on March 23, 1903, Ernst Ludwig sent his daughter "a big hug from Papa".
He finally returned to Darmstadt via Genoa on April 3, 1903. In the following months, Ernst Ludwig continued to send postcards with loving greetings to Elisabeth from his travels through Germany. In one of his last cards, written on August 6, 1903, he told her: “Next time you must come with me.”

I was tagged by @counterwiddershins, for this meme game where I tell you a bit about me so that you can get to know me better. Thanks, friend! :-)
favorite color: green, almost all shades, from olive to darkest pine. I don't love yellow-greens, though. They need to have some blue in them.
song stuck in my head: Dragula by Rob Zombie (I think?). I saw a tiktok this morning where the "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat" scene in The Aristocats was replaced with "Dragula" and it's been stuck in my head ever since.
last song I listened to: see: "The Aristocats" as scored by Rob Zombie. (I was trying to ease the earworm. It didn't work.) And then "Thunderstruck" by ACDC, "Mary on a Cross" by Ghost, and then the Act One Finale of Don Giovanni (criminally overshadowed by the Act Two Finale; this is one of the most baller ensembles in opera, period). I've still got Dragula stuck in my head, though.
three favorite foods: just three? I am She Who Eats All the Things. Hmm...I love bulgogi meatballs with rice and salad; I love taco bowls with good salsa and guacamole; I love fresh brioche slathered with salted butter and red plum jam, a cup of milky coffee on the side. I am also appallingly delighted these days by a plain bowl of Cheerios with very cold milk, a fact which made a teenage friend of mine put her hand on my arm and ask, in all earnestness, if I was okay.
"Something terrible has happened," I replied. "I like Cheerios now. I don't understand it but I cannot stop."
"Do you need to be smoke cleansed?" she asked. "Holy water might work."
Last thing I googled: "bookstores near San Francisco International Airport". I have to go up there tomorrow to pick up my mom and want to at least get my money's worth.
Dream trip: a Nile Cruise from Aswan to Cairo on a small private boat, like they did a hundred years ago. Do I realize that my fascination with the history of archaeology/Egyptology can be considered Problematic? Yes. But people have been cruising the Nile for millenia and I am a woman of science*, damnit, and I just want to see the panolpy of Egyptian history unfolding before my eyes like a goddamn Romantic, so that I can marvel at the wondrousness of the human condition and ponder mankind's infinite smallness in the face of the relentless march of history, yada yada yada. I am a simple woman. I want to stand in awe at the beauty and greatness of mankind and I want to do it from a small ship in the middle of the river.
I would also really like to visit Italy, particularly Venice and Rome.
*in my heart of hearts. I tried to be an academic, I truly did. I was not made for that world. But so help me, I can be an interested amateur!

TOBIN
@bixiebeet @spengnitzed
Tobin (full name John Horace Tobin in the Role-Playing Game and Jonathon "John" Horace Tobin in the IDW Comics) is the author of Tobin's Spirit Guide, a book cataloging various known ghosts, goblins, spooks, spectres, and demons that is often used as a reference guide by the Ghostbusters whenever they fight an unfamiliar entity or to find information on a ghost they are trying to defeat.
Ghostbusters International - Tobin's Spirit Guide
John Horace Tobin was born in London in the 1870. He was the only child of a very affluent family and son of a successful businessman. Tobin studied at Oxford University where he earned two degrees, in Obscure Ancient Languages and Psychology. In the late 19th century, Tobin worked in middle management for a British trading company in Egypt, performing tasks such as record keeping. After the death of his father and an encounter with an Egyptian spirit named Ahagotsu in 1899, Tobin and his new friend Shrewsbury Smith vowed to spend the rest of their lives researching and fighting supernatural entities.
From 1901-1902, Tobin established an office in London with Smith then embarked on an extensive trip through the Low Countries, including France, Germany, and the Netherlands for the next three years. From 1905-1906, Tobin and Smith spent another period in their London office. In 1907-1911, they traveled to Eastern Europe then south from Turkey into Mesopotamia. Tobin spent the next two years on follow-ups and Smith would occasionally return to London to run errands. A return to Egypt followed in 1914-1916. They traveled along the Nile River, Alexandria to Aswan, by ship from Suez to Aseb, north to Damascus, east to Beirut, took a steamer to England. Luckily, they left the Middle East months before British forces began driving Turks out of Palestine.
Tobin and Smith spent another period of two years in London then made a trip to the United States of America. They mostly explored the eastern seaboard for two to three months then returned to London. In mid-February 1920, Tobin missed the deadline for his book. It didn't seem to cause any problems. On March 6th, he wrote the book's introduction and the first edition of Tobin's Spirit Guide was published in October. The rest of Tobin's life is unknown aside from the death of Shrewsbury Smith in 1924.
IDW Comics
Jonathon Horace Tobin earned his education at Cambridge University. Tobin made a name for himself exposing fraudulent spiritualists. In the early 1900s, he was called into investigate a creature preying on children in an East German village. Tobin encountered a Grundel. In 1909, Tobin journeyed to Russia to meet with Vladimir Belascu in the Tunguska region. Something terrible happened and it was later known as the Tunguska Blast of 1909.  In 1912, Tobin went to Siberia. He stayed at the house of the alleged Witch of Krasnoyarsk. On September 14, 1912, Tobin met an explorer named Mikhael Gallon while he was working on an entry about the Werechicken.  Mikhael was investigating reports of Woolly Mammoths. Tobin revealed he had glimpsed one.
Together, Tobin and Mikhael mapped out where the Mammoths could be found. He decided to accompany Mikhael's group deeper into Siberia for his research. Days went by and no Mammoths were seen. Tobin recounted an old Russian folktale about The Undying Soldier and his Mystical Sack. While contemplating the truth of the story, Tobin stated, "Every myth grows tall from the tiniest seeds of truth" and noted the renowned historian Leon Zundinger documented the actual existence of Vigo from the folktale. The group discovered an old tower and Tobin became alert and documented everything. While Mikhael's team rested, Tobin explored the tower. He discovered the corpse of the Undying Soldier. He led Mikhael to the room and shared his findings. However, Tobin stared elsewhere at Death. Tobin went undercover in the Cult of Gozer to research their methods and history for his Tobin's Spirit Guide book. He later published a more in-depth look at the cult in a smaller book titled "The Gozerians Among Us". The print run was marginal and it is believed no copies of it exist in the present. The Schoening Omnibi later spring boarded from the research on the Cult of Gozer.
Tobin completed the full text of the guide in 1929. While researching Senta, Tobin created an illustration of it based on descriptions present in the journals of Heironymus Van Aachen. However, while conducting research on this entity, Tobin passed away.
In 1934, Sam Hain purchased the home of Jonathon Tobin - nicknamed Tobin's Mansion, the largest occupied residential compound in America, located in East Hampton, New York.
In the 1990s, the Paranormal Contracts Oversight Commission kept a file on Tobin, labeled #P012.

These Mighty Pyramids Were Built By One of Africa’s Earliest Civilisations! The Mysterious Rulers of Nubia, in Present-day Sudan, Erected Hundreds of Tombs and Temples that Rival Cairo’s.
— By Emma Thompson | 29 December 2022 | Photographs By: Nichole Sobecki
Tumblr media
A “haboob” (sandstorm) rolls across the Meroë pyramids in Sudan. Most of the 41 tombs here belong to the royals of the powerful Kingdom of Kush (900 B.C. to A.D. 400), which ruled large parts of the middle Nile Valley.
Powered by agriculture, ancient Sudan’s great civilisations thrived and erected mighty temples and tombs honouring their gods, kings, queens, and nobles. Their building boom left behind some 255 pyramids—more than twice the number Egypt constructed next door.
Yet few Western travellers have seen these hulking sandstone relics. That’s because Sudan’s tourism industry has been impeded by two civil wars (1956-1972 and 1983-2005) and the battle for independence that led to the creation of South Sudan in 2011.
Tumblr media
The temple of Soleb was built in the 14th century B.C. by Pharaoh Amenhotep III, in present-day Sudan. Visitors can still view its massive columns and splendid relief carvings.
Travel to Sudan is still currently not advised due to ongoing civil unrest related to a 2021 coup. However, when tensions ease, Sudan offers a singular chance to camp beside crowd-free ancient pyramids and to learn about the mysterious reign of these little-known pharaohs. A guided road trip along the Nile Valley takes you from the splendid temple at Soleb to the UNESCO-recognized Meroë, with the world’s largest cache of pyramids.
Black Pharaohs and a Once Great City
Nubia once stretched south from Aswan, Egypt, to modern-day Khartoum, Sudan. It gave rise to one of Africa’s earliest civilisations, the Kingdom of Kush, whose kings—nicknamed the Black Pharaohs—conquered Egypt in 747 B.C. and ruled the vast territory for nearly a century.
This drama played out on the banks of the world’s longest river, the Nile. Flowing south to north from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean, the legendary waterway was considered the source of life itself because the annual flooding brought fertile soil for farming.
From the capital of Khartoum, it’s a nine-hour drive north to Soleb, Sudan’s best-preserved temple and the southernmost structure built by Amenhotep III, the Egyptian pharaoh who also commissioned the temples at Luxor. It was once guarded by the Prudhoe Lions, a pair of finely carved red granite beasts inscribed by the boy-king Tutankhamun when he visited. They are now displayed at London’s British Museum.
Tumblr media
Top: Visitor Nadeem Abduraziq Mohammed walks through the ancient city of Kerma, Sudan, in July 2021. Kerma has been occupied for at least 8,000 to 10,000 years, reaching its peak around 1800 B.C., when it was capital of the Kingdom of Kush. Bottom: There are 41 tombs in Meroë’s north cemetery, 38 of them belonging to monarchs who ruled the region between B.C. 250 and A.D. 320.
Take a small barge from the village of Wawa to the western bank of the Nile, and you soon see the sandstone columns of Soleb’s main hall. Carved at their bases are images of Assyrians, hands chained behind their backs, whom the Black Pharaohs took as prisoners of war.
A few miles south of Soleb, set back from the tents where locals serve small glasses of tea beside the Nile, is Kerma. Established around 5,500 years ago, this ancient capital grew up around a huge adobe temple called the Western Defuffa. At its height the city had a population of 10,000; today, its mud brick ruins are inhabited only by nesting swallows. Nearby lies one of the oldest cemeteries in Africa.
Tumblr media
Top: A fragment of an ancient carving sits near the Kerma necropolis. This area of Sudan has been inhabited since Paleolithic times. Bottom: Tahani Abdulaziz takes a photograph of family members during a visit to Kerma.
Haunting Tombs and Dazzling Murals
Just over an hour’s drive south, and slowly being swallowed by sand, is Old Dongola. Founded with a fortress in A.D. 600, it served as the capital of the medieval Nubian kingdom of Makuria and grew to include palaces, houses, and Christian churches. It was a major stop on the Darb al-Arba’in (Forty Days Road) that thousands of camel caravans followed, transporting ivory and slaves between the Sudanese town of Darfur and Egypt.
Best preserved is the Church of the Old Granite Columns, its pale pillars framing a Throne Hall that was converted into a mosque in 1317 and remained in use until 1969. Now it’s open to visitors, along with an adjacent Islamic graveyard with distinctive 17th-century domed tombs known as qubbas.
From there, the Nile loops eastward and you come to El-Kurru, a cemetery used by the royal family of the Kingdom of Kush. Unlike in Egypt, Nubian burial chambers sit below the pyramids, not inside them.
Adobe tunnels cover the entrances to the chambers, chief among them the tomb of King Tanutamun (who died around 653 B.C.). Uneven shallow steps descend into the darkness until a flashlight click reveals a duo of domed rooms, one leading onto the other. Their white gypsum walls are covered with intricate murals in colours of ochre and yellow.
On the back wall is an arresting scene depicting Tanutamun’s heart being weighed against a feather by Maat, the goddess of truth. Kushites believed this recorded a person’s good and bad deeds and determined if the king’s soul could pass into paradise.
Tumblr media
A Sudanese family tours El Kurru, a field of pyramids built for the kings and queens of ancient Kush.
More royal tombs crop up in Nuri, further upstream. Its smaller and steeper 70-plus pyramids are now reduced to 20. The most famous tombs belong to King Taharqa, the Black Pharoah who conquered Egypt, and King Nastasen, which archaeologists have to scuba-dive to reach because of rising ground waters.
Nuri served as the royal necropolis for the adjacent town of Napata, the first capital of the Kingdom of Kush. Both the cemetery and the ruins of the settlement lie across the Nile from Jebel Barkal, a 341-foot-tall sandstone mesa. From its summit, you can see the ruins of Nuri, including rows of cracked pillars and pairs of giant stone rams, their eyes and ears worn away by time.
Tumblr media
Top: The pyramids of Nuri, Sudan, were built between 650 and 300 B.C. The most famous tomb belongs to King Taharqa, the Black Pharaoh who conquered Egypt. Bottom: Archaeologist Gretchen Emma Zoeller excavates a burial site in Nuri. The ancient site sprawls across more than 170 acres along the Nile in northern Sudan.
On the western side of Jebel Barkal is a crumbling stone door frame leading to the Temple of Mut, wife of Amun. Spotlights illuminate its fine wall murals chronicling Taharqa’s coronation in white clay, ocher, and deep blue.
The World’s Largest Group of Pyramids
Finally, the Nile weaves past Meroë (pronounced Mero-way), the Kushite capital until the empire collapsed in A.D. 400 and site of Sudan’s best-preserved pyramids. More than 200 of them spread across the sands. Their granite and sandstone bases are etched with elephant, giraffe, and gazelle designs, proof that this was once fertile grasslands.
Tumblr media
Sudanese tourists visit Jebel Barkal, Sudan, to climb the small butte, which has been considered sacred for thousands of years. Roughly a dozen pyramids are also scattered around the base of the mountain.
“It’s the biggest congregation of pyramids in the world,” reports archaeologist and Meroë site manager, Mahmoud Suliman. “At the time of the 2019 revolution, street signs, advertisements, and paintings all featured their images. It brought people together because the pyramids are so tied to our sense of identity.”
Mentioned in the writings of Herodotus, there’s an air of defiance about these structures that stand firm against the sands trying to swallow them. Indeed, it was an act of resistance that led to their construction in the first place. In the third century B.C., Kushite King Arakamani (Ergamenes) had grown tired of the Meroitic (Meroë-led) kingdom’s power-hungry high priests. So when they sent an order for him to commit suicide, he responded by having them all murdered instead.
Tumblr media
Top: A group of school children approach the pyramids at Meroë. Bottom: Volunteer tour guides show a group of Sudanese school children the Meröe pyramids. During the dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir from 1989 to 2019, Sudan’s school curriculum was infused with Islamic ideology and much of its rich ancient history was glossed over, but the new government wants to change that.
The rebellion ushered in a new era of culture: the almighty Egyptian god Amun-Ra was downgraded in favour of the lion god Abedemak, the (still undeciphered) Meroitic script was created, and warrior queens, known as kandakes, ruled the army. Inside the tombs, the carvings of the kings stand taller than the gods. You won’t see that in Egypt. Here, kings controlled everything except death.
It’s a strong message and one that’s inspired a fresh wave of national pride. For just as Ancient Greece informed so much of today’s European culture, so too did Nubia shape Sudan. It is the bedrock that formed the country’s sense of self and identity. Understanding this history suggests a way forward for Sudan.
“These were very popular kings and queens,” says Aya Allam, a Sudanese martial artist based in Khartoum. “They are a reminder that we were once a great nation and could become great once again.”
Tumblr media
A pyramid covers a tomb in Meroë, Sudan. Rulers of the Kingdom of Kush were buried here underneath the steeply pitched structures, which range in height from 30 to one hundred feet tall, far shorter than the pyramids in nearby Egypt.
