Two worlds 2 hidden islands

A trip to the east end of the island rewards visitors with unspoiled, quiet beaches a thick, forested interior and plenty of pristine spots to explore beneath the water's surface.Ĭozumel sits along the Mesoamerican Reef System, which runs 175 miles from the Gulf of Mexico down to Honduras. Rent a scooter for the day to take a trip to the more remote corners of the island. In fact, the port area where ships dock is a frenetic hotbed of activity, from restaurants and shopping to boisterous beaches.īut more than just a one-day stopover for cruisers, there is so much more to explore away from the main drag. Wreathed in shimmering, crystal-clear water and powder-soft sand, Cozumel has been a major attraction for honeymooners and scuba divers for decades. Just off the coast of bustling Playa del Carmen is one of Mexico's greatest Caribbean escapes: the island of Cozumel. Note: Some businesses may be temporarily closed due to recent global health and safety issues. But did you know that the country's coastline is peppered with so many other islands? Both the east and west coast, as well as the Sea of Cortez and Gulf of Mexico have island escapes that are waiting to be discovered.įrom the Caribbean paradise of Isla Holbox, to the rugged desert experience on Espiritu Santo, and the remote marine treasure trove of Socorro Island, Mexico has quite a few island adventures that are ripe for the taking.įor ideas and inspiration on the top places to visit, read our list of the best islands in Mexico. Most visitors are well-versed in Cozumel, one of Mexico's largest cruise ports and a top destination for diving and romance. But while most of its idyllic vistas ring the coast of the mainland, Mexico has quite a few islands, as well, which offer a different vantage point from which to enjoy the country. It is, without a doubt, a beach lover's paradise. When it comes to the best beach destinations in the world, you'd have a tough time doing better than Mexico. Swimming with whale sharks is an experience like no other. Often the adventure involves being out on a boat in rough seas though, far from shore, and the giant creatures may or may not be near the surface. It's much more pleasant in La Paz in Mexico, however, where they like to hang out in relatively shallow waters in a bay close to the city.
Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the world and it's not just their size that is mesmerizing. The white spots on the body seem to glow when you are swimming up close to them as a diver or snorkeler and their mouths are simply huge. They're mysterious in many ways, swimming vast distances throughout the year to visit the best feeding grounds. They're not meat-eaters though like most other sharks. They feed on plankton, krill, and other small sea nutrients that flow into their big bocas.
The Whale Shark Snorkeling Experience
In some parts of the world you need to be a scuba diver to get close to whale sharks, but near La Paz you just strap on a snorkel after a 15-minute boat ride and hit the water with your guide when he or she spots one from the boat. And they're almost sure to spot one without much of a wait: the whale sharks here are sticking around a relatively small area where the buffet is especially good.
If this all sounds too good to be true, well there is a slight trade-off. A fully grown adult whale shark can reach 40 feet in length (12 meters) and weigh as much as 20 tons. The ones swimming around the Baja Peninsula are juveniles, however, usually three to five years old. They're more likely to be 12 to 20 feet long instead, so no fears here that you're going to encounter one with a mouth big enough for you to fit into whole! These kids have a long life in front of them: they'll likely live as long as you will or more, as in 70 to 100 years.
Even those these may be youngsters, they're still an amazing site to see and they will dwarf any other fish you've seen in the water while snorkeling. They're docile and not all that fast, however, so you can swim along beside one and look it in the eye. It probably won't seem to bothered, just like it's not too bothered by the sucker fish attached to its body here and there. Here's a video from the footage I took when we were whale shark snorkeling in La Paz:
youtube
After this great experience, you'll usually go see some sea lions on an island and possibly snorkel with them, but it's generally crowded and can be kind of a bust. (It's much better to do it off Isla Espiritu Santo national park on a separate tour.) Then you head to Balandra Bay, however, where you have lunch on a stunning beach.
Whale Sharks Swimming Regulations
I've done this tour twice now, first on my adventure tour through Baja Sur, then a second time a few months ago. The regulations were pretty solid the first time I went, but they've been tightened up more since.
First of all, the boats are only allowed in a certain part of the bay. The sharks get a quiet zone in the rest of the area where nobody can bother them. They're coming to this part by choice and can leave when the pesky humans start getting on their nerves. Here are the other regulations in place, enforced by a government ranger that boat captains have to check in with on the water:
- The season allowed to view the big fish is October through May.
- Only six people at a time max are allowed in the water, though the good companies keep it at four and alternate passengers.
- Snorkelers must stay 16 feet away from the head and 20 feet from the tail. No touching allowed!
- No flash photography
- The business owner, boat captain, and guide all have to have certificates of training completion
Booking a Whale Shark Tour
Since the regulations above have eliminated a lot of the bad actors operating in this space, it's harder to get onto a bad tour than it used to be. There are still reportedly 85 licensed operators in the La Paz area though, so that's a lot of boats still competing to take you out on this popular tour.
I don't feel really comfortable recommending specific local operators since they frequently change names and staffers with regularity, but if you book through a well-known adventure tour company that has been active in the area for a long time, with a good reputation, you're probably going to be fine. I've personally deal with Todos Santos Adventures, Baja Outdoor Activities (BOA), On Board Baja, and Sea Kayak Adventures. If you want some extra peace of mind, you'll have someone to complain to if you book through Viator.
As always, the best advice is to shop around and rely on personal recommendations. This is not an activity where you book the cheapest trip from some tout on the malecon to save five bucks. Go with a professional company that puts the well-being of the whale sharks as high as the well-being of their bank account and has a long-term vision. The trip cost rarely rises above $80 unless you're having a gourmet lunch or something extra is added on besides sea lions and the beach, so do it right and make this a special day.

Travelmag – A taste of ‘real’ Mexico in Baja California Sur
Last February we headed south to La Paz in Mexico’s Baja California Sur. It is an authentically Mexican town on the Sea of Cortez. We needed of a good dose of warmth and sunshine to dispel endless weeks of winter on Canada’s west coast.
Seated at a local café, we savoured our first breakfast. We had a bird’s eye view of La Paz Bay and the fishing boats returning with their morning catch. Just across the street was the Malecōn. This wide waterfront promenade is the town’s showpiece. Tourists and locals alike come here for their morning exercise … some cycle, some walk or jog and some even roller blade or practice yoga. Tall palm trees provide shade to the benches where people sit and watch the world go by. The large, showy flowers of the hibiscus plant add splashes of colour to the walkway. Seagulls bob on the water or hover overhead. We loved to watch the pelicans, too. For hours at a time, these patient animals stood motionless on the rocks hoping for a fishy tidbit.
Having lingered long enough, it was time to stroll along the Malecōn. At regular intervals, there were small plazas, each characterized by a sculpture honoring marine life or someone associated with the sea. We particularly liked the graceful rendition of the Mermaid and Dolphin. Facing seaward was a statue of Jacques Cousteau, who called the Sea of Cortez the “world’s aquarium”. The Dove of Peace, locally known as the “Fat Pigeon”, commemorates the donation of Isla Espiritu Santo to the nation. And the Giant Clam evokes La Paz’s once-thriving pearl industry. As evening fell, this peaceful bay was bathed in sunset’s golden glow.
One day we visited the Museum of Anthropology. Our guide, Isaac, explained that eons ago, small groups of tall, dark-skinned nomads and hunters arrived in the Baja. These people lived in caves and created some of North America’s oldest cave paintings using red, black and white pigments, reproductions of which were on display. Over time they became a seafaring people. Eventually, disease wiped them out and by the late 18th century they had ceased to exist. Over the next 150 years the Spanish tried and failed to establish an outpost here until finally establishing a permanent settlement in 1811. For hundreds of years, native Mexicans dove for pearls. The industry became commercially viable in the mid 19th century when the Spanish exported large quantities to Europe. This resulted in over harvesting so that by the 1930s the natural oyster beds had declined never to fully recover.
A 30-minute drive brought us to Balandra Beach, a wetlands protected area. Actually it is several separate beaches surrounding a deep bay framed by a backdrop of low mountains. On its rocky cliff tops mighty native Cardon cacti stood guard. Most commercial activity is prohibited although there are a few palapas and the occasional vendor plying his wares. We followed Isaac to El Hongo, Balandra’s distinctive mushroom shaped rock. Almost everyone in our group posed for a photo at this defining landmark. En route, Isaac retrieved a sleepy sea cucumber hidden under a rock and later on pointed out three white ibis pecking at the sand in search of a tasty treat.
Another day we rented a car and drove to Todos Santos which lies almost directly on the Tropic of Cancer. A mission was first established here in 1723 and the town grew up around a natural palm oasis. From around 1850-1950, it became the sugar cane capital of the Baja and provided prosperity to the area. Today, this quaint colonial village attracts both artists and tourists. The six blocks that form the heart of Todos Santos are easily explored. On some streets, party flags fluttered. Artwork depicting faces from the Day of the Dead adorned another. While my husband rested in the shade, I discovered a charming cactus garden and a number of art galleries. The Hotel California was constructed in 1948 by a Chinese immigrant and was occupied by his large family for many years. Over time, it fell into neglect but in 2001 was renovated into an eclectic 11-suite hotel. It exudes an artsy vibe. We enjoyed a typical Mexican meal in the shady courtyard where the resident potter expertly molded many different objects.
Lastly we took a guided trip to the uninhabited Isla Espiritu Santo, a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Sea of Cortez. This archipelago, home to a great variety of flora and fauna, is the Galapagos of the Baja. Our diverse group of 12 retired Mexican nurses and six North Americans gathered dockside around 11 am. Before boarding the panga (a typical Mexican open fishing boat that has a shade canopy and an outboard motor), we all donned lifejackets. Straight away, the tequila appeared. These nurses were going to have a whale of a time. Shortly after the leaving the dock, we spied a trio of playful bottle nosed dolphins jumping for joy in the crystal clear waters. Black frigate birds hunting for prey circled the skies above us. This area is close to the San Andreas fault and experiences frequent earthquakes. Anira, our guide today, pointed out several distinguishing rock formations: El Diablo and “Donald Trump’s face”. In places the vertical cliffs resembled an intricate tapestry. Anira advised that crustaceans and fish of all colours and sizes as well as five species of turtles make this water home. Blue-footed boobies, black jackrabbits and ring-tailed cats are also inhabitants of these volcanic islands. Our captain steered past two small guano-covered islands before powering through a naturally-formed archway. As we passed through, Anira told everyone to make a wish and then look back. Amazingly, the sky resembled the shape of the Baja Peninsula.
We continued on to Los Islotes, a rocky outcrop at the northern tip of the islands, home to a breeding colony of over 650 sea lions. What a rowdy bunch! These hulking creatures have elongated front flippers, small ear flaps and communicate with loud, sharp barks. Some adults luxuriated in the sunshine while the youngsters frolicked playfully. Anira advised that the light brown sea lions were female, the dark brown ones male. The females can live up to 27 years and have just one baby every two years. The colony greeted about 180 new arrivals this past year. At birth the pups have no hands and must be taught how to swim. The males have a shorter life span (15-16 years) as they frequently engage in territorial fights, incur life-threatening bite markings and can have up to eight wives.
The chilly water temperature deterred our boatload of guests from snorkeling. Instead we headed directly to the white sandy beach at Ensenada Grande. The boat’s crew efficiently erected sunshades and a table. We were served a delicious lunch of ceviche with tostados, sandwiches, fresh fruit and cookies. It wasn’t long before our Mexican nursing friends brought out the beer. One lady entertained us all by singing and dancing with a bottle balanced on her head. Others paddled in the warm, shallow water where trumpet fish darted to and fro. We would treasure this wonderfully scenic day on the Sea of Cortez.
This low-key vacation gave us an opportunity to slow down and unwind. We returned to Vancouver much refreshed and ready for our next adventure.

A Guide to The Best Day Trips from Los Cabos
Situated at the end of the California Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos is home to endless pristine shores, blue-water bays, year-round surf breaks and artful cultural attractions. Below is our list of the top five day trips to enjoy from San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. LOS CERRITOS - Situated north of Cabo San Lucas, just outside Todos Santos, on the Pacific Coast, Los Cerritos is a stunning expanse of pristine beach—a not to be missed Baja destination. A popular surf spot for everyone from the beginner to the advanced rider, Los Cerritos boasts a right-hand point wave, sandy bottom and a lively beach scene with a family-friend restaurant. Los Cerritos breaks all year, but is best on the north winter swells, which also bring the whales on their annual migration to the region. Go for the day and stay for the spectacular sunset over the Pacific. TODOS SANTOS - The secret may be out, but Todos Santos remains the quaint, historic, artists village it’s always been, located 45 miles north of Cabo San Lucas. Mission-style architecture lines the streets, which feature a vibrant mix of galleries, boutique hotels and authentic restaurants. The town also plays host to the annual 11-day Trópico de Cáncer Concert Series, featuring musical acts from around the world, and the week-long Todos Santos Art Festival, featuring everything from dance and theatrical performances to craft shows and food exhibitions.   LA PAZ  - The capital of Baja California Sur is situated on the Sea of Cortez, featuring spectacular crystal clear, azure waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling and exploring. Plan your day trip to swim beside the whale sharks, gentle giants that surface for microscopic plankton, or to explore Isla Espiritu Santo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can snorkel with sea lions, hike the island trails and camp under the stars. No trip to La Paz would be complete without a stroll along the seafront Malecón promenade, featuring beachside parks, Mexican art installations, sidewalk cafes, restaurants and bars. THE EAST CAPE - For the more adventurous in spirit, the East Cape unfolds from San Jose del Cabo past endless unspoiled beaches and surf breaks along the Sea of Cortez. The remoteness of the area, which features spectacular private homes and destination restaurants, is part of its appeal. Veteran surfers may be tight lipped about their favorite spots, but among the more well-known is Shipwrecks, which is most popular in the summertime, when this point break offers experienced surfers south, southwest swells. Farther up the coast is Nine Palms, a 300-yard point wave perfect for all levels, surrounded by beautiful palm tree-lined hillsides. South swells are at their best April through October. LOS BARRILES - Along the East Cape between San Jose del Cabo and La Paz is the friendly, laid-back beachside community of Los Barriles. Windsurfers and kiteboarders from around the world flock to Los Barriles to fly their multi-colored parachutes and sales in the picturesque Las Palmas Bay when winds pick up between March and December. Also a deep sea fishing paradise, Los Barriles features numerous boutique hotels and beachside restaurants, making it the ideal day trip for water sport enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.     A Guide to The Best Day Trips from Los Cabos published first on https://real-estate-sg.weebly.com/

Useful Island Hopping Ideas
To put it simply, it's visiting one island, possibly keeping the night time in a hotel or camped on the seaside and then moving on to the next island. This type of travel lets you enjoy each island and islet in Vanuatu, or as much as you can throughout your amount of time in the islands. Area clicking is perhaps most useful suited to those with the yearning for adventure. Lots of the islands in the archipelago are uninhabited, though characteristics the lapu lapu island hopping side trees, verdant jungles and excellent white shores of the other islands. Island hopping may help you appreciate as many of these diamonds as possible. Discover the woodlands, enjoy the beach, bath in the sea or rivers... Oahu is the life of experience you crave. One of the greatest islands with which to start your area jumping adventure is Espiritu Santo; you'll find virgin forest, the ruins of WWII US troops, such as for instance damaged planes and forgotten Quonset huts and more. For the very adventurous, Ambrym island provides a wealth of opportunity. This volcanic island, house to two productive volcanoes Benbow and Marum, has always been an ideal place for a real adventure. Ambrym is famous for sorcery and miraculous, timber carvings, and Rom dances. Malekula island is an incredible spot to explore. The traditions of of the islanders stay largely unchanged and it is a favored destination by anthropologists round the world. The hot and inviting tribes of Malekula become instructions for discovering the area and take great pleasure in discussing their culture and heritage. Are you buying a passionate escape in the middle of the South Pacific? Area jumping may give you that, as well. Area clicking for love is somewhat unique of adventure hopping. The premise is exactly the same, however. Visit one of many uninhabited islands and group a picnic lunch for the seaside; discover secluded lagoons and inlets, or walk turn in hand through grape groves and the water's edge. You'll find forget about romantic place in the universe. So, you're sold on the thought of area jumping, but are doubtful of how to accomplish it? You can do therefore very easily. 5 Best Travel Itineraries In Brazil for your Next Trip!
New Post has been published on http://www.thedigitalglobetrotter.com/5-best-travel-itineraries-brazil-next-trip/
5 Best Travel Itineraries In Brazil for your Next Trip!
Brazil is my favorite country out of all the countries I’ve been in the world. Possibilities of itineraries are endless, as immense as Brazil is. If you’re looking to get the most out of a first visit of a week or two, I usually recommend to stick to the basics and travel around the state of Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro has so much to offer and usually represents the image of what Brazil is like for foreigners. But Brazil is very different in other states, this is why most first time visitors usually reference Rio as their favorite destination, as exotic as it is! Here is a list of my favorite ones.
Itinerary one: Round tour around Rio de Janeiro State
Start and finish in Rio.  Rio deserves at least 3 to 4 days on it’s own, having so much to offer. I always recommend staying around the beach area, in Ipanema or Copacabana, I personally prefer straight in the middle, in Arpoador, where you get best of both worlds. Party in Lapa is a must, diner in Santa Teresa neighborhood, enjoy live samba shows is always on my list every time I come, and if I can catch a bossa nova show, I try to make it (there is a great one at Praia Vermelha every Friday). Moving on, enjoy some beach time in Paraty about 3 hours away by local bus. From there, it’s an easy ride to the city of Ilha Grande where monkey hang around trees and sipping coconuts on a hammock is a local favorite. I then recommend a little bit of mountains around Petropolis, the only imperial city of the Americas. It has great waterfalls and jungle like sceneries. Then its time for Buzios, about 3 hours north of Rio, a city was that mostly built by Argentinians, hence the style and luxury feel of the city! It’s a party place, to try to make it through the night. A bit more time I would include Minas Gerais, but that state is so big I would reservist it for a trip on it’s own!
Itinerary two: The North
I love the north of Brazil, like most people who love beaches will too. I usually recommend to people to travel from Salvador all the way up to Fortaleza, hitting on the way cities of Aracaju, Recife, Maceio, Juao Pessoa, Natal and Fortaleza, reaching on the way Jericoacoara for an incredible experience! For those pushing a little further with more time, I highly recommend reaching Sao Luis to see my favorite natural wonder of Brazil (and probably in the world), the Lencois Maranhenses. Do not miss the flyover in a little plane, the views are just priceless!
Itinerary three: The South
Some people on a south American tour will prefer to go south from Rio de Janeiro, and that makes sense, as it is a great way to connect with the other great destination for every backpackers in South America: Buenos Aires. Some will hit Sao Paulo on the way, but I personally don’t like it. I think tis overpriced and there’s nothing to see. Paulistas are very friendly though so if you happen to stay there a couple days, try the bohemian neighborhood of Vila Magdalena, it’s a favorite.
On the way down, I recommend stopping in Curitiba, its people are actually descendants of Ukrainians and Polish, so people get blonder and whiter skinned. The other must stop is Florianopolis in Santa Catarina, a great little surfing spot. From there, Porto Alegre, the German city, is a nice spot too on your way to Uruguay.
Itinerary Four: Other Destinations and off the beaten track
Other destinations of choice include Minas Gerais, as a whole. I travelled with a rented car from Rio, up to Minas Gerais with its beautiful colonial towns, all the way up to Belo Horizonte, Brazil’s 5th biggest city. Then on the way back to Rio I crossed through the state of Espiritu Santo and reached its capital, Vitoria. Vitoria is definitely one of my “must go back” cities, a kind of miniature Rio de Janeiro with less tourist. From there, going back to Rio through the coast, with a nice stop to Buzios.
For those more adventurous, Going up the amazon from Belem to Manaus is a great experience. I definitely recommend doing it the “local” way… By hopping on a local slow boat and do the expedition 5 days upstream the amazon (or 5 days down stream from Manaus to Belem). I actually planned it so I arrived exactly on time for Parantins Carnival, known as the second biggest carnival after Rio, on an island half way between Manaus and Belem. That was in itself worth the trip, and turned out to be my favorite experience ever lived in Brazil. From Manaus, I travelled through Roraima and crossed into Venezuela, but I wouldn’t recommend it nowadays, with the crisis that is going on there.
Other essentials include travelling around Bahia and Visiting the Iguacu Falls.

Saturday, December 31, 2016 – La Paz Rest Day
Kilometres: 0
Nathan was super nice and got Rebekah a boat trip to the Isla Espiritu Santo for Christmas. She enjoyed the trip, although would've chosen a different tour company if going again (Club Cantamar did just the basics, while the recommended tours were all full, apparently the company Espiritu is quite good). She snorkelled with seal lions (one swam over her shoulder and touched its nose to her goggles), enjoyed the abundant fish life and the interesting geology of the islands. At the end of the day she got to see manta rays learning to fly.
Nathan's day was quiet, as he chatted with our friends about plans for the evening. We met up with Brent, and wandered around the city. Our first surprise came on the Malecon where we found a group of Hasidic Jews celebrating the 8th night of Hannukah with a giant menora. One had a shirt that said “Hasid and Hipster aren't that far apart.” After watching the singing and dancing, we turned into the main part of downtown (el centro). It was (almost) completely deserted. We were so confused. A few bars were open, but not many. Where was everyone?
Our first answer came when we walked past the cathedral: it was packed with people. We eventually returned to the bar with good nachos (we were the only ones there), where the owner told us that it would be wild there around 1am – most people spend the first part of New Year's eve with their familiy, and then party after 1am. Very different than the North American style!
Just before midnight we headed back to the water, and ended up finding a live band playing for a local restaurant. Their energy was contagious, and we had a great dance party on the malecon. We even found Aidan and Natalie – cycle tourists on a tandem who we'd first met way back at Oceano campground – who were staying at the same warmshowers place as Brent and they joined in the dance party. It was a great way to dance into 2017.
