Well Sparklers, I seem to once again be writing this description (and therefore posting the art) later in the day than expected again today, but y'know I'm still early enough I don't feel such a rush to just get everything done, as was an extremely bad habit for me during Inktober last year...But we're only on Day 2 so it's still very possible I'll end up in that situation at some point later in the month. 😅

Either way, since we covered I think what was left of the background information for my how/whys for October this year yesterday, I think today I'm free to focus just on today's piece.

And I'll start with the admission that one of the primary reasons this word made the cut when I was putting together the prompt list is because I personally find it more amusing than I probably should that "Littoral" can very easily sound like "Literal" depending on your accent/pronunciation; And while I haven't figured one out, I just know there's a delightful pun or wordplay hiding somewhere in that association. 😆

Does that have anything to do with my choice of shapes for the mandala or colors for the background? Not consciously, no. But I mention it just in case someone for some reason finds the idea as funny as I do!

That said, this one is—at least I think—a lot strong on the specific images in the mandala that tie back to the theme than yesterday's. Granted, I probably leaned a little more heavily on general beachy/ocean themes than is really appropriate for a word that's really more about shorelines for multiple kinds of waterbodies...

In my defense, I started working on this one around 2-3 a.m. before I went to bed and was struggling to stay awake for the area between the inner circle of seashells and the round with the tail-fin shapes. What were supposed to look more like fish scales underneath those fin shapes came out looking a lot more like the edges of stacked sand dollars as a result. 😅

That might kinda be for the better though because I think if they did look more like scales, the tail fins might be a little too mermaid-y. Sand dollars probably fit a little better for a shoreline focus. Or, this way they kinda also make me think of like...ridged rocks that you might see either along lake edges, or as like the "drop off" point where the ocean shore "ends" and the deep sea more or less "begins," if that makes any sense.

I also tried something...I want to say "different" but we're only on Day 2, so that feels a bit odd. 😆 But it is something I don't usually do with mandalas when I make them. You'll notice that the round with the tail fins features only 2 additional sea shells, not 4, 6, or 8 as would be more typical for a mandala pattern, and on either side of that same round where you'd expect another pair of shells to be are instead some different wave shapes.

This was just a small experiment in what I'm going to do "non-traditional symmetry" (because "asymmetry" isn't quite right). So far I'm just using Procreate for these, and Procreate's built-in symmetry tools can only be pushed so far vs. an app made more specifically for mandalas, so I was trying to get a feel for where exactly my boundaries with Procreate's tools are. Obviously I didn't get too crazy with it because I was tired, but I did learn a few things and intend to carry them forward.

To that end, for what it's worth, I am considering trying a mandala-making-specific app, but I haven't pulled the trigger just yet. I thought I'd try a couple more with just Procreate and see if I still want to. I have a feeling even if I do try another app, I'll end up tracing over whatever results I get in there in Procreate anyway just to make sure all my Obscutober pieces are stylistically consistent. [That's a me thing, I don't expect anyone else to care about the style consistency even half as much as I personally do.]

I will also say the "splash" shapes that end everything off weren't really what I originally had in mind, but I'm not bothered about it because I think they came out great and give the effect that I wanted really well. 😄

Oh, and before I move on from the mandala part: If you look closer, you can also see I tried just a little bit of hatching on this one. I wanted to "fill in" some more of the mandala lines for visual interest, but I didn't like the solid-fill look in those areas when I tried it. It's still not quite what I wanted but I was too tired to be bothered re-doing it. I'm also not sure how much I'll use hatching (or other "traditional" inking techniques) for the rest of the month, though it is a tool I'll be keeping in my metaphorical back pocket just in case.

This may as well be a good time to mention that not necessarily every Obscutober piece will use white mandala lines; I don't want to overcomplicate my choices too much, but I am planning on allowing black lines as well, if they'll suit that day's themes better. So far we've just had two days in a row where I thought the white worked better. 😉

As for the background: This one is one of the things that motivated me to go with this particular format for this year. I didn't start working on this piece until after the decision(s) had already been made, but during those last couple of days of September when the mandala idea finally started to form, I was going back and forth over the words and landed on "Littoral" again; The idea of having a kind of "island" in the middle surrounded by "water" for the background popped into my brain—Nothing but shoreline all 360º around. 🤗

That wasn't the deciding factor alone, but it was definitely a strong nudge in that direction! This background was also a good "test" in that it pushed me to consider there might be days—like this one!—where it's tempting to color the background less abstractly and more tied to whatever is happening with the mandala lines. Somehow, I hadn't really considering that yet. From that, you can see I decided that some spot color is okay, but for consistency purposes, I am still going to keep it largely soft and abstract. Since I'm toying with the idea of making coloring pages out of the finished mandalas later anyway, if I really want to color right inside the lines, I can worry about that after Obscutober.

Besides, keeping it abstract will be faster anyway; I have a tendency to get way-too-perfectonist when coloring inside of digital lines. 🫠

The longer I think about it, the more there are things I might do a bit differently if I gave the mandala part another go. I am still happy with how this one turned out and think the background is really solid, it's just that usual "hindsight is 20/20" artist problem—Sometimes great ideas for a piece only come after it's already done and you really don't feel like going through the trouble if changing what you have!

Ah well. Maybe I'll have more ideas actually come to me in-the-moment if I can be bothered working on the future mandalas when I'm not falling asleep at my desk. 😆 It still beats being wide-awake because I'm rushing to get it done at all, but it's definitely not the ideal way to be! 😅

In any case, aside from delays in writing this description, I've been enjoying seeing a few people (mostly on Tumblr) decide to try out the Obscutober list for themselves, so the month is off to a pretty decent start as far as I'm concerned! I hope it is for you Sparklers too, or that if it isn't, that things get better soon! 🤞

hi beloved! never posted speedpaints before (whenever i draw i keep having "side quests" where i get distracted from my original work and start drawing silly things on the same canvas esp when i'm bored so my speedpaints are embarrassing fjfj) but i can absolutely post beginning end pics for u w a detailed written walkthrough. <3

step 1: simple sketch. getting good at proportions requires a lot of anatomy study & figure drawing practice & letting go of idea that it has to be perfect <3

step 2: linework. so this is procreate's 6B pencil. it won't give you clean lines, you can zoom in and see that. it's not my favorite, i'm still in the process of discovering brushes and brushsets, and if you want to get more crisp & clean lines sharp inking brushes are the way to go.

this is also not very stylized, except i usually draw the eyes bigger than they are. i'm still trying to figure out what my style is, and i hope to have an established style one day.

step 3: laying down flat colors. i usually just pick mid tones for this.

step 4: shadows. one of the things i'm still trying to learn is soft and hard edges. this is also something you'll only get good at w practice

step 5: more shadows where you need them!

step 6: undertones!!!! honestly to me rendering skin is still one of the hardest things ab painting. we're not one solid color, we don't look homogenous. my tip for this step, don't be afraid of the colors (bec i used to be very much afraid of them fjfjd) we're not just beige or brown or dark brown. don't hesitate to put purple and pink and blue and yellow and orange while you're rendering the face bec we have all of those colors in our undertones.

step 7: putting some color in the shadows!

step 8: basic highlights. again there are soft and hard edges here too

step 9: the different lights.

step 10: i go through the same steps with lips and eyes, though i will rb this ask w a speedpaint of how i render eyes <3 i also put shadows and higlights on clothes on the same layer, just because i find that more convenient & easier. i also added details like the beard, tattoos, chest hair, highlights on the hair, and the background.

there you go! this is in no way a tutorial, i've been only learning how to draw digitally and this is like my 20th digital painting Ever, i still very much struggle with rendering and lights and shadows etc. but lots of practice & watching tutorials from artists u aspire to help a lot <3

2023 YEAR IN REVIEW!!!

My artstyle changed a lot this year, especially after my shift from ibis paint to procreate after getting my iPad (drawing on an iPad is the BEST btw 100% recommend I love it way more than a phone and it didn’t die after a month like my old wacom 💀💀). I’m relatively happy with where my art is atm and I hope to continue to improve in 2024!

Explanation of all the silly art down below! (Mostly so I can tell y’all who the fanart is for but also cause I like rambling)

January: A drawing of my Rise Leo human design I did to test out a pixel brush I found for Ibis Paint. He’s very fun to draw hehe I need to draw him more-

February: I wanted to learn how to draw the future designs of Leo and Mikey along with CJ so I planned to draw them all together! I struggled with Leo though so I just got rid of him. Sorry Peepaw 😞😞💔💔💔

March: Fanart for @beannary ‘s TLP au! I love it so much so I had to draw smth for it hehe 😈😈💥💥💥 which reminds me I need to draw more at some point- might redraw it at some point cause I’m not super happy with how it turned out but I do like the idea a lot

April: The month I created Reticent! April’s Fools was the first episode I came up with so I drew a chapter poster! It ended up being very different to the chapter cover I drew a couple months later but it’s still cool :D Leo is being weirdly affectionate to Mikey though what the heck that isn’t like him smh. Although I guess it was meant to be purposefully exaggerated sooooo 🥰

May: Reticent Casey!!! I don’t have much to say it’s just Reticent Casey HDKSGXKSHD this wasnt a very good art month

June: Krangified Donnie is literally my favourite concept ever thats it that’s all I have to say dbskdbwkh I adore Krangified Donnie and if the Rise brainrot takes over the Reticent brainrot for a while then I will probably be drawing Krangified Donnie during that time sorry not sorry

July: Reticent Chapter 3’s cover yippee!!! Still my favourite Reticent cover although Chapter 8’s is a close second (I can’t wait to post it once it’s been betaread yippee!!!). The scribble over Leo’s eyes is literally just because I was struggling to draw his eyes and i was getting annoyed dbskdbskdb it’s actually a very common issue with him (common Ret!Leo L). Also Mikey being reflected in the mirror is a reference to Mirror Man by Jack Stauber which I’ve basically considered his theme song since @aaronymous999 introduced it to me ebwjcbkwhd thank you Mr. Aaronymous! Also somebody said he was in the barbie box and I still need to draw that to this day because Mikey would’ve killed to go see Barbie.

August: RET DONNIE WOOOOO he’s being bullied again!!! I drew that piece for a colour palette challenge request and realised I got the prompt wrong so I just made it into its own thing 💥💥💥 it’s usually a flickering light gif but I chose to just use the version with the light on for this post. The photos in the background were really fun to draw hehe either April’s or Mikey’s is my favourite.

September: MY 500 FOLLOWER DTIYS YIPPEE (/my 150 follower DTIYS for tumblr). This one took me. Forever to draw and I love it to pieces hehe it was really fun to design Mikey’s room and figure out outfits for the sillies and idk the concept of a sleepover just seemed really fun to me dbskbdkdb- and all the entries I got were so so awesome I loved them all to pieces!!! I still look at them all the time hehe

October: FANART OF @endlesslogo ‘S HUMAN RISE LEO DESIGN WOOOOOO!!! This was the piece I started rendering on hehe it was so much fun to draw!!!! Although I did have a fight with rendering the hair for over an hour svsjegksbdk HOW DO PEOPLE DO IT FR!!!

November: Me and my friends were working on a crossover between our TMNT iterations so I drew all of our Karai’s together!!! Confluence Karai is on the left, created by Salem and Marine, New Stars Karai is in the middle created by Starla, and Reticent Karai is on the right created by me! sorry if this has been asked before but i'd love to know your process for creating animatics. not only are they so incredibly fluid and perfect to the music but they're COLORED! absolutely inspiring. i'd love to know what you do for planning and editing, basically how to put an animatic together in general. i use procreate to make art but other than that i'm completely clueless on how to make animatics

ooooh okay i would LOVE to tell you!!!! So first things first I will say that my animatic process is probably not the most like. Efficient way to do it. I'm not an artistic expert and I'm very self-taught so this is just what I've come up with over the years with the resources I had.

All that to say I have two main programs that I use, one to draw (Medibang Paint Pro) and one to put the frames together for my animatics (Davinci Resolve). These days, I have both of these programs on my laptop so I have everything on one device. Before I had my current laptop, I used Medibang Paint on my iPad and iMovie on my laptop, but the overall process is basically the same.

So. I have five main stages of making an animatic once I have a song and a character/narrative in mind.

Stage 0 is arguably the most important stage, which is deciding it's something I for real want to do. Making an animatic is a big commitment, so it has to be something im 100% on board with or I'll get bored before I finish it. So usually when I hear a song and I think "oh I can apply that to x character" I'll have to listen to that song on repeat for at least a few weeks just to iron out the story in my head, decide what moment I'm going to put with each lyric, basically plot out the narrative internally.

This stage is a bit different for every animatic. For some of them, like the Snackrifice as an example, I heard the song for the very first time and went: i know EXACTLY how this is going to go and then I went home and started planning it out immediately. Others, like Aequitas Aug, I had the song as a vague "oh this is Coin vibes" for months before Expansion Era ended and I finally knew I had all the material I would need for a full cohesive narrative. And then a bit longer to really decide "okay so the redactions are going to be at this point, the semicentennial will be at This moment" and so on.

I have a whole playlist full of songs that I COULD make into animatics that I vibe to on a regular basis, basically marinating them until I have enough content and ideas to start actually planning them out into an animatic.

Stage 1 is scripting it out: I write out all the lyrics of the song, count up how many beats correspond to each line, and plan out what I'm going to do with each section. As an example here's a portion of my script for Miguel's first animatic Autoignition. As you can see my script is often pretty loose and jokey at myself, because I already kinda know what I want it to look like by the time I start scripting it, this is just to get it down for pacing and to fill in any gaps.

Stage 2 I do my actual draft. I do every frame as a very quick sketch. This stage is where I put all my frames into Divinci Resolve and match it all up to the beats of the song. I work out my timings, I figure out if I need to add/delete frames somewhere. The majority of the fiddly work happens here in terms of lining it all up to the music. All the frames look about as basic as this lmao the idea is Quick and To the point so i get can idea of what I'm working with. Very often I'll have figures in this draft stage where, as an example, I know I'll need to put players from the Flowers or the Dale from a certain point in time, but I haven't decided exactly who yet, so they're just vague humanoid blobs.

Stage 3 is Lineart, and this stage takes the longest because I'm actually doing the proper drawings for everything. I don't do colouring yet, because this stage takes so Long and I prefer to do my colouring all in one go so I can keep it consistent. it also allows me to catch any errors that I might make in my Lineart because I get to go over it again when I colour. This is where I make my final decisions on who all the extra characters are that show up that don't Really need to be there.

When it comes to deciding Who Gets To Appear in the Animatic, there are a few tiers.

Characters that NEED to be there for plot/emotional reasons (think like Nagomi Mcdaniel appearing in Alaynabella because Layna switched with her for the Shadows)

Characters that I want to put in there for theme reasons (think Luis Acevedo in Hall Stars, I included them as a cameo because they were later incinerated and the whole animatic was about incinerated players)

Characters that I like/my friends like (Esme and Howell making appearances at the start of Aequitas Aug)

Characters that are just easier to draw, depending on how many times I have to draw them and how tired I am at the time (when in doubt, I tend to default to humanoid characters with reasonably simple designs. If I'm like 400 frames in on Aequitas Aug and I have to choose between horse person Winnie Hess and regular human Eizabeth Guerra to help represent the Breath Mints getting got, I'm gonna go with Eizabeth even if Winnie is technically more iconic and recognisable.)

And so of course Stage 4 is Colour. I add in the colours, any lighting effects, all the extra fun bits.

My colouring is USUALLY pretty basic, to save time and effort. For colours that I tend to reuse a lot (typically sunbeams uniforms and the main colours for the various beams) I have them saved in my paint app so I can access them easily. For other players I've drawn before I usually have to bring up one of my previous drawings to reference the colours. Backgrounds are the bane of my existence and as thus are usually kept as simple as possible, and lighting is typically something I use sparingly. Basically, I take as many shortcuts as I possibly can to save my sanity.

And voila! Off to Youtube. Like I said above, I'm sure this isn't the quote unquote 'Best' way to do it. But it works for me, and doing it in these stages give me a fun little progress video to look back on when I'm slogging through the lineart stage.

It's definitely really tedious at times, and keeping up the motivation to do hundreds of frames three times in a row can be really difficult (especially with a full time job) but it's definitely sooooo exciting when I finally finish. I publish all the draft and lineart videos on youtube as well as unlisted videos, and its always fun to look back on them to see the difference between the draft and the final finished product.

Most of all though, it took me AGES to get to the point of animatic making where I am now. My very first animatics for Dimension 20 were SO different to what I do now, and I was very lucky for a while to have a lot of free time to focus on doing it a lot. My VERY first animatic wasn't even set to a song. It was from a Fantasy High clip, and i never got past the draft stage for it.

The other part of animatic making that I had to start taking really seriously was character design credit. For Quite a while, I did not include credits for designs of players that I did not create. It wasn't until Aequitas Aug (which had an OBSCENE number of players) that I realised what a massive oversight that was. Nowadays I have a big spreadsheet that lists every Blaseball player that has ever appeared in my animatics and the creator of the design that I used/riffed off of if I could narrow it down to one or two. For some players its trickier, often because their design was consistent over multiple artists or I couldn't be sure what the origin was, but I do my best to be as accurate as possible. If you're looking to make some blaseball animatics, I totally encourage you to do so, but I would advise getting on top of credits sooner rather than later! It's so much easier to add in new characters and their designers now as I find them rather than trying to backtrack and remember exactly which picture on the wiki I took inspiration from, along with it being a lot more respectful to all the other amazing artists in the fandom.

Overall, animatics are a lot of effort, but they're soooo worth it. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask me, I love to talk about my animatics and my process.

15. 2-4 hours. up to ten or twenty hours if its something longer or bigger. that multipart bioshock piece took around 12-14 hours and it was a couple of days.

16. i draw less but i do more fully finished pieces now. its mostly just circumstance. in class i always doodle and draw but since i havent had proper classes in a year and a half i havent really been drawing as much. but i do have more time which means i can finish pieces more easily

[RF] On The Road

The radio is playing in the car as we cruise along the streets in this small city that I have spent most of my life in. My father is driving. I am seated besides him and looking out the window. I look at the people waiting at the bus station in the freezing winter weather. They move from one foot to another, shifting their weight in a kind of slow dance. Hands in their pockets. We pass some buses filled to the brim with souls. That bus is carrying life itself on its own, at the hands of another.

I don’t speak, neither does my dad. We just sit in silence and drive to the airport. As we get closer he tells me to call him when I’ll be back so that he can pick me up. As we arrive right in front of the airport, I thank him for the ride and get out. Open the rear door and take my luggage out. I tell him bye and go about my business. For once I feel a strange sense of relief. I am leaving this place even though for a few days. I just need to get out and I feel good about it. I walk inside the airport and head straight to the check in desk. A girl about my age I am guess, early twenties takes my passport and asks:

“Any more luggage?”

“That will be it, it’s a carry on.” I reply.

“Have a nice flight.” she says.

“Thank you. Bye.”

I take the ticket and make my way around the line of people that had formed in the meantime. I put the passport and ticket inside my jacket and I head outside to the smoking area. I have been smoking already for close to a year, mostly on and off. With a few days in between. Mostly when I am on the road. I join the people chit-chatting outside. I bought a new package for this occasion. I open the pack and struggle a bit to get the first cigarette out of the pack. I take the lighter I have found about a year ago on a plane. It’s been around for awhile. It’s blue and light. It does the job. It helps me light up my addiction. It serves a purpose. With both hands cupped around the cigarette I manage to light the cigarette. I take a puff and exhale. I am alone, very much so in that instance. I look at all those unfamiliar faces around me. It feels good to not be known, to be left on your own, to have that kind of freedom is beautiful.

Then a thought goes through my mind and alarms me. What if my father has not left, but is somewhere around. Perhaps I had forgotten something in the car so he parked it and went to look for me. Then I think he’d surely call if something like that should have happened. What if he just looks from a distance and catches a glimpse of me smoking. Like a kid I fear to be reprimanded in front of everyone else. How silly of me, and yet I often think how much I have censored of myself living under my parent’s roof. How much I have come to be controlled by the fear of what would they think if they saw me. Even though I was already an adult alright, an age where parents should have no more say in my life choices for it’s my life. And I often think of this bad habit I started — smoking. What for? Just another waste of money, a death sentence. Yes. Perhaps, I sometimes would like to give those that ask me the reason of me starting to smoke lays in the sadistic desire to advance my decay into the darkness.

I finished my cigarette and head back inside straight through security. One of the customs men asks me if I carry alcohol, cigarettes. I tell him just one pack for me. He nods and tells me to go on. I always find it funny the security part in airports. Taking all your belongings and putting them in that tray. Watch, phone, wallet, laptop, belt, liquids. Then you stand there and wait for the hand motion to give you the approval to walk through the gates of approval. I often just look at them and ask — “Can I?” They nod back and like those traffic policemen that orchestrate the cars, motioning towards them as if to say — come to me honey, come to me, right this way. You walk through that gate expecting something grandiose to happen. But there is no beeping so it’s all kind of anticlimactic. So you just stand there waiting to pick up your belongings and be on your way.

I have about one hour to kill before embarking. I take a sit and put my headphones on and listen to some music I have on my phone since who knows when. I haven’t updated that playlist in some time, but that’s alright. I look at some people as they pass me by. I check the parents with their infants in the strollers. Toddlers running around and parents chasing after them as if trying to catch a chicken that’s on the loose. All happening to the soundtrack of my choosing. I look at those little kids which are adorable and cute in a way. But which I also can never imagine having. That’s a big discussion in itself the topic of procreation I mean. I guess I just lack that innate desire to pass on my DNA. I find it pointless. A huge investment and at what expense as well.

Fast forward getting on the plane I take my seat and observe the chaos happening around me. People struggling to their seats, the blocked aisle. The stewardess from the middle of the cabin coming towards the back and raising her tone a bit. Motioning again for people to come through and to not block the aisle. The announcement made instructing to take our seats as soon as possible and to not block the aisle for the other boarding passengers. Then a mom with an infant takes the seat behind me. The kid is crying and is kicking my seat. In my mind I think of the three hours ahead that I have to endure. But it’s also late so I figure that kid is going to fall asleep shortly after take off. He does, my observations correct on that one. Once the seat belt sign is turned off I head to the lavatory and wash my hands and face. I get out and approach the stewardess with my order — 2 beers and Pringles chips. She is kind enough to serve me before the start of service.

I enjoy my beer in silence and think of nothing in particular. The girls pass with the service trolley and I check the behind of the one pushing it towards the middle of the cabin. She looks fine, firm as well. Her hips dancing from one side to another with each step she takes. We are close and we are also very far away from one another. I close my eyes for a moment. I can’t sleep on a plane. I shift in my chair then I stand up to loosen up a bit. For a moment I get back into my absurd rumination about the absurdity and pointlessness of life. I sketch a smile when I think of how each day has become so predictable. My life a faint touch of reality. How alienated and foreign existence seems and how abandoned I feel from it.

After we landed I head outside the airport towards the smoking area. I had booked a room in a hotel not faraway, but before making my way there I pause for a second. Take a cigarette out and join the others. I inhale and exhale, what a relief. How pleasant it feels. Being fully present in the moment, a meditation of sorts. I also find myself immersed in a new culture. Where nobody knows me and I know no one. I look at the girls with their Starbucks in one hand and a cigarette between their slender fingers. I watch them non-nonchalantly lifting the cigarette to their lips taking a drag. I check them out from my corner. After I am finished I lift the handle of my luggage and roll it behind me as I follow the sidewalk towards the hotel. There are some cars going by and my rolling baggage is filling the entire night with this obnoxious sound as it hits some gravel. But I don’t feel like lifting and carrying it. So I just continue making the noise. Dragging this screaming corpse behind me.

I arrive at the hotel. I tell the guy at the reception I have booked a room for the night. He asks me for the reservation number. I don’t have it with me. I show him my passport and ask — ”Will this do?”. He nods and checks me in. Then he writes the room number and hands me the key card. I take it and head towards the lifts. The room is at the end of the corridor. I walk straight and then make a left and then walk to the end.

I swipe the card and the door unlocks. I put my bag down and take the coat off. I turn on the TV and fill the kettle with some water. I make myself a cup of coffee and lay in bed. 8 hours left until my next flight. I browse the channels and I am in awe at the show that’s showing. Naked attraction’s the name. I can’t believe what I am seeing. Two women staring at the penises of 5 men which are lined up. Their bottom half only showing. I am literally watching these two women comparing the dick sizes of these men. Smaller, longer, thinner, thicker. The girl chooses the guy with a better looking dick. Sounds fun enough, welcome to the 21st century television. Then she undresses and shows her boobs and vagina. After they meet on a date and then some time they are interviewed regarding their dating experience. Big surprise — they have nothing in common and it was just a hook up, but nothing long term. I go in the shower and undress.

I look at myself in the mirror. Trying to see myself through the same lens. I look average. My body is alright. What I am packing is average. The abs I once had are a faint shadow at this point. I haven’t exercised in a long time, and yet I still look slim. I need to get a haircut. I push my hair up and make a silly face. I try on different smiles and think — so this is what others see when they look at me. The face I mean.

After I am done with the shower I go in bed and dim the lights. I put on the alarm clock and close my eyes. I muted the sound on the TV and leave it playing in the background. I think back of all the movements and flow of today. I feel bad about being so down and depressed most of the time. I try to picture myself living a normal life. Chasing that same normal life with a woman in it, a house, friends and travel. Instead I find myself mostly alone, sheltered from experiences that are happening out there. Scared of getting hurt, I lock the door behind me. Sometimes I lock it for good and I push people away. At this point it feels like all I know is how to just push people away. In another life perhaps if there is one, I’d be laying in this same bed with the woman I love. Unconditionally. Yet, this night I lay alone and drift to sleep in the hotel room number 263.
