Ah, more weekend updates!!! Gotta love AO3 and Star Wars fic reading! I’m not caught up, but I hear this one has about 3 chapters to go, so this should be an exciting update. If you aren’t following, this is a great one to add to your list. 

Author’s Summary:

Murdering his own father has left Kylo Ren splintered into two personalities representing darkness (Kylo Ren) and light (Ben Solo). Rey’s strange bond with him has her caught in the middle, struggling with conflicting feelings of her own.

Why I love it - Dark and Light, Good & Evil - are Kylo and Ben’s separate personalities that cut and dry, or are they something more? I stumbled on this right after seeing The Last Jedi trailer and was captivated! The writing style is vivid but not overly wordy (can you tell I’m a finicky reader)? 

Quoting the author from the comments, this is a “psychological drama with romance and action mixed in” with twists and turns! Well thought out, well written, and thought-provoking! Don’t miss!

When Rey works up the nerve to ask Grand Master Luke Skywalker to train her, she makes friends and finds something deep and wonderful in the martial art known as Taekwondo.

She never thought the choice would change her life.

Alternatively, a (long) story of love, family, and Martial Arts.

The Heartbreak Prince by diasterisms. (Harry Potter, E, WIP) 

I swore I would never read Harry Potter AU’s or Works In Progress, but for this fic I broke both rules. This is, pun not intended, so magical in every way. It has me SHOOK and if somehow you haven’t heard of it yet, do yourself a favor and check it out!

In Living Memory by SpaceWaffleHouseTM. (multiple times, E, 221K)

Ben and Rey are rendered immortal after being struck by lightning at the precise same moment, and keep running into one another as the centuries drag on. Waffle’s stories are all amaaaaazing and you need to read ALL of them.

Hit Me With Your Best Shot by SageMcMae. (modern, E, 214k)

MMA fighter, Kylo Ren is suspended from the league and sentenced to community service at his uncle’s martial arts academy. There he meets Rey Niima, a recent graduate with a natural ability and incredible potential.

Soul Searching by OptimisticBeth. (AU, Modern, E, 205K)

A Soulmates AU in which Ben is horrified to find out he’s soulmates with his 16 year old student, ten years his junior. (no underage shenanigans) This fic fucked me up. The world building is so stunning. The story is rich with love and fluff, but oh the angst. Soooo much angst and emotional anguish and two people who are trying their best but just can't communicate for shit. The overall story is so beautiful and worth every heartbreaking moment. A happy ending WILL come!

Satan Wears a Rolex by AquaWolfGirl. (Modern, E, 205K)A Devil Wears Prada AU. Unfinished, but it’s fascinating and it ends well where it is.

Hiraeth by Ferasha. (1990′s, E, 204K)

An absolute angst and pain train of a historical war fic. This is not a comfort fic. It will fuck you up. But if you’re into that, the way they’ve woven canon plot in with the Yugoslav Wars is a masterpiece. It’s dark and gritty and will make you feel things.

Le Fin Du Fin by QueenOfCarrotFlowers @leofgyth. (Victorian, E, 196K) A Crimson Peak AU!!! This writer has never let me down.

A Proposal by Any Other Name by Lucidlucy. (Modern, E, 188) A Leap Year AU.

Salt in the Blood by Hagen. (9th century, E, 169K) Featuring pre-Norman invasion Ireland, selkies, love of the sea, and mythical creatures.

The Great Big No by dietplainlite. (1990′s, E, 165K)

Kylo Ren is third generation rock royalty, a reigning brat prince starting to feel the burn of the fame he reached for with both hands. Rey is an aspiring singer on the verge of a big break, provided her A&R guy still has a job by the time she reaches LA. Their paths have crossed briefly, disappointingly, before. What happens when they collide?

The Trail Bride by SecretReyloTrash. (AU, Wild West, E, 160K)

Rey Niima finds herself in a perilous situation when her husband dies at the start of their journey West. From the few bachelors on the trail in her party; she attaches herself to the best of her options- mysterious Banker Ben Solo. A really interesting, amazing piece. Lots of introspection, and a heart wrenchingly real look into abuse and recovery. I emotionally digested for days.

I cannot say enough good things about this fic. It’s serving you knight Kylo and witch Rey and so so many good feelings. Sure there’s some angst and dark magic and some struggles but mostly this is a lovely Ghibli-esque story about two people living in a treehouse and talking to animals and having a really good life! Everything HarpiaHarpyja writes is magic.

An absolute classic. It’s about growing pains and growing feelings - the transition from childhood into adulthood and all the messy bits in between. God, it will hurt you. Badly. But it’ll be so, so worth it.

Okay, I finally decided to write out my list of reylo fanfics that I am either currently reading or have finished reading. Since I’m a fancy lady, expect lots of smut. I mean really, I’m pretty sure every single one of these has smut so be forewarned if you aren’t into that. But life is short and I love smut so there it is. Two lonely, disparate pieces coming together

(Me and @mysonkylo did a lot of episode IX speculating yesterday and I see some people already coming to the same conclusions. I just wanted to develop it a bit more, put it all in one place to reblog in 2 years and see how much we predicted.)

What do we actually know about episode IX so far? We know nothing but the working title and the setup from episode IX. It might go in a completely different direction, but we think this is the most logical way the story will go. This is a bit long, so I’m putting it under Read More.

Rey and the Resistance:

·       For a long time everybody has been assuming that Rey would find her belonging with her Resistance friends, that they would become her family, that she would fight with them for the cause. I think this idea is going to be thrown out of the window pretty early in the movie.

·       Think about it, nobody in the Resistance actually knows what Rey has been up to, they probably think she came to Crait right after leaving Ahch-to. They have no idea that she ever interacted with Ben, they don’t know what happened on the Supremacy or what happened to Snoke. And I doubt she’s going to be quick to tell everyone the truth. All everyone might know are rumors about Snoke’s death.

·       Once everybody finds out Rey went to the Supremacy all by herself, what if they assume she did kill Snoke on her own? Snoke, the most powerful dark side user at their time. They will start viewing her as a Resistance hero, the poster girl for the cause. At this point she will be the only force user in their ranks, and not just any force user but an incredibly powerful one. They will see her as their only hope in battle with the First Order and will expect her to become Luke 2.0 in approximately five seconds. Can you imagine the pressure she will be put under? She’s just beginning to explore her power. She’s nowhere near being in full control.

·       And all that happening while she’s hiding her connection with Ben from everyone around her. What if everybody just assumes she will be the one to defeat Kylo Ren? I imagine they won’t be thrilled after she turns out not so keen on the idea. It will make everybody suspicious and distrustful of her.

·       From what we know, they will probably kill Leia off during the time jump. With all of the leadership dead, it leaves the entire Resistance in the hands of Poe. As much as I love Poe, we know he’s single-mindedly focused on the cause and would do anything for it.

·       We know the force bond between Rey and Ben won’t go away that easily. I don’t have my mind set on how they’re going to reconcile… But I think it might have to do with one or both of the two things: Leia’s death and/or Rey’s power getting out of control. The Raw Power ™ talk has been kind of dropped at the beginning of TLJ. What if the pressure from the Resistance will awaken those powers? What if she will give them a reason to be afraid of her? She might have to swallow her pride and ask Ben for help, as he’s the only person in the galaxy that could possibly know what she’s experiencing and know a way to help her.

·       One thing I’m 99.9% sure will happen, is someone will find out about Rey and Ben’s bond. If they manage to reconcile and get close enough for the hut scenario to happen again. Anyone could just walk in and see her having a chit chat with the Supreme Leader of the First Order. In everybody’s eyes he’s the enemy number one, the most dangerous person in the galaxy. I can’t imagine ANYONE in the Resistance being very happy. Especially if that person happens to be Poe. As we saw in TLJ, he was quick to call Holdo a traitor simply for doing something he didn’t agree with. Rey might already be distrusted and feared at this point, but someone seeing her with Ben would be a breaking point. What would Poe assume? That she’s a traitor? That she’s giving all the information about the Resistance to the First Order? That she’s being manipulated by Kylo Ren? No matter what conclusion he came to, Rey would be completely cut off from any important Resistance information or plans. That is IF she was even let go freely. If there’s any risk she’s being manipulated, it would be dangerous to just simply let her be. Would Poe listen to anything she had to say? Is there any chance they would believe her? I don’t think so.

·       At this point there would be two possible scenarios. One, where the Resistance would distrust Rey completely and either imprison her or force her to leave. Two, they would want to use her as a weapon against the First Order. She’s the only person in the galaxy that can get this close to Ben and I bet my ass the Resistance will want to use this.

·       What I’m saying is, she will quickly end up on her own, imprisoned or exiled. While I think Finn will choose to trust her in the end, it’s crucial for her to be left completely alone at this point.

 Ben and the First Order:

·       While we’re lead to believe Kylo Ren is now the big bad in this story, I think it’s much more probable this role will ultimately fall to Hux. This is a man with an “unquenchable thirst for power” and no remorse. He killed his own father because he posed a threat to him. Unlike Ben, he wasn’t torn apart by what he did in the slightest. He despises Ben with all of his being, he already tried to murder him while he was unconscious in the throne room. He’s just waiting for a good moment to take over.

·       The perfect moment to do that will be if he manages to discover what actually happened in the throne room. No matter if he sees that it was actually Ben that killed Snoke or that he simply helped Rey who he thinks killed his Supreme Leader, both of those count as treason in his eyes. The only reason he hasn’t taken over already is because he’s scared of Ben’s power. But he’s just waiting for a moment where he’ll be vulnerable. He won’t be able to protect himself all of the time, especially not against big numbers. The rest of the First Order won’t hesitate to turn on him if they find out what happened to Snoke. My best guess is he will be sentenced to death for it. I would live for a scene where both, Ben and Rey sit in their cells and they connect through the force.

·       Basically, we end up with our two space idiots not being able to turn to anyone but each other. This is what has been set up all along.

Hi! I've been looking for some new fics to read and I'd like to ask which ones are your favorite and who are your favorite reylo fic writers? Thanks so much

Hi! It kind of depends on what you like to read. When I look at my reading history, it is all over the place in terms of themes and AU or canon! I’m afraid I’d leave someone out. 

Favorite writers, though...@grlie-girl - for feel-good, rich descriptions, smut, plot, and humor.

@corariley - for the darker Kylo, a riskier, edgier story that isn’t for everyone - very explicit, very sexy, but also a thriller.

@riaria84 - She makes me laugh consistently with her stories!

@perrydowning - Can’t go wrong with her stories. She has “all the feels” and she also has beautiful rich descriptions - if she’s describing a meal, you’ll want to eat it. If it’s a dress, you’ll wish you had it, etc. Also can be very sexy, but it’s always infused with love. 

@albastargazer surprised me with The Mating Service. I haven’t had a chance to read more stories by her, and I’m really not an A/B/O fan, which this story is, but I was able to just ignore that part and enjoy the feels and the comedy - just the right combo of both.

@daxlo-ren, who wrote one of my favorite stories - Stranger Than Fiction (completed story). Goes by Daxcat79 on AO3. I just connected with this story on so many levels. It’s funny and deep at the same time.

@3todream3 was an author I started reading this year, and she’s really good. 

@terapid  - I’ve read all his stories and loved them all, but they are very different. I think The Force Arranges a Marriage and the followup story made me laugh the hardest I’ve ever laughed reading a Reylo story. Sanctuary was my favorite, though, because I love a good Gothic vibe.

@belovedunderwing, who is DragonWhiskers on AO3, was the first author I read and she is amazing. She has diverse fiction, all of which is pretty erotic, but she also explores topics like “what is a monster” and likes to provoke questions in readers, so I like her works.

Wissixwe, who wrote Strategic Alliances and a followup called The Skywalkers is one of the best writers I’ve read, and it’s a shame she doesn’t have more followers. She doesn’t pimp her stories out and doesn’t promote them on here, although I’ve tried to do it for her. Lots of world building.

@lilia-ula - Also a writer I discovered this year, very sensual writer and very poetic almost with her prose. This Way Lies Ruin was the story that hooked me, but she has multiple works going. 

@lastmouseleft wrote A Gift for the Emperor and then branched out and tried some other stories, all with sort of an Arabian Nights feel to them. Love her.

@pacificwanderer is another writer with great style, and I hope to read more of her work this year. 

@cosmo-gonika has a new “steampunk” story which is really addicting, and I also love her story, Songs of Innocence, Songs of Wisdom. 

@destinieswritten (destinies on AO3) wrote Tactical Surrender, one of my favorite stories, and now has a sequel going.

The Reylo community has some amazing writers. I’d suggest subscribing to them on AO3 and perusing the summaries to see what interests you, since reading is always a subjective thing and you might not like what I like to read. Happy searching, and thanks for the ask!

I tag my anti stuff all the time, even have it say in my FAQ that people who ship my NOTP are welcomed to my blog just understand im gonna sometimes shit about it but its not a personal reflection on you [unless you are a sk/oulson stan, they are by far the most rude, racist and abelist people ive ever laid eyes on].

Happens after TLJ, different ending Kylo wakes up before Rey and takes her on a journey to figure out what the force wants with them. This is a work in progress, but it stops in a very satisfying place (though I can’t wait for an update!!!)

Hand of Fate by Sweetestcondition. Happens after TLJ, a different ending Rey accepts Kylo’s offer and together they figure out a way to take down the First Order from the inside. Such a great story and it’s complete!

Stranger Than Fiction by daxcat79

Modern Au. Ben Solo is a a famous author who hates love and is forced to add romance into his story about the anti-hero Kylo Ren. Rey becomes his muse...and lover. Basically, he writes about reylo, talks about reylo with Rey, they roleplay as reylo and the life like reylo. What more can you want?! :D And it’s so greatly written! Every character and the twists in this. Great humor and angst. This a work in progress, but as with Brightshadow stops in a very satisfying place. Still, I can’t wait for this masterpiece to continue!

Three sacrifices

I’ve been thinking about the sequel trilogy as a whole and its act of steadily killing off the main characters of the original trilogy. And it hit me. Each movie represents a stage of Ben’s redemption arc and a sacrifice made to make it possible.

·       In TFA Han sacrifices himself and dies forgiving his son, which is ultimately the very first thing that kicks of Ben’s redemption. Killing Han was supposed to bring Ben closer to the dark side, but it did the exact opposite. It completely tore him apart, it opened his eyes to where he was and where he wanted to be. Also, this first stage was a completely voluntary act (taking into consideration all of Snoke’s manipulation of course).

·       In TLJ Luke sacrifices himself and goes away with peace and purpose, knowing he played his part in Ben’s redemption. While not letting Ben commit another murder, he let him express all of the anger and resentment he bottled up inside for years. Ben is furious while fighting Luke, he screams after Luke disappears from his sight, but after Luke dies, there’s no more anger in him. From this point, there’s nothing but sadness and pain left. At this stage Ben was only partially in control, he was able to attack and express all of his rage, but he couldn’t do any real damage himself.

·       It makes me think that they intended to kill Leia in episode IX either way. It will be the third stage, the very last. Leia’s forgiveness and sacrifice would be the last push Ben would need to redeem himself. This time, all of it would be completely out of his control.

Three movies. Three sacrifices. Three of the most important family figures in Ben’s life. Three reminders of the past that he has to accept and move on from. Once he does, he will finally be able to start looking towards the future and start building new things on what’s left of his old life. If I ever had any doubt concerning Ben’s redemption arc, they would be gone by now.
