“This is the life I wanted And I just watch you at it Scrolling through your posts” • Another poetry book on my read list this month is this little gem from Dawn Lanuza. Like her first poetry collection, raw emotion and simplicity of the words propel the pieces and drive them straight to the readers’ hearts. This time, the heart break in the words are more contained, introspective - for me, at least - but it’s nit less painful. • “I prepare myself for the possibility You break away from the casualty.” • The collection features more long pieces, which I appreciate a lot, but the short ones deliver enough fire power to stir feelings I thought was long forgotten. 😏 • “Some nights I miss the city But I am better where I am now” • It’s a comforting read, full of love for a significant other, and love for yourself. I’m reading this at a different headspace than when I read her other collection so I guess that’s why the effect is different, but I think that’s the beauty of these poems - its transcendence. She wrote it to express one thing, from a certain time/times in her life; I read it and felt something else. Dawn’s words are familiar and relatable, yet I experienced it uniquely, personally. The Last Time I'll Write About You by Dawn Lanuza

I've seen quotes of this all over social media and so I went on to read it the first chance I got. I only meant to start reading poetry again, but my god, I wasn't prepared enough for the feels that made me gobble all of this in one sitting! I am familiar with Dawn Lanuza's other works but this is the first one of hers that I've read. And let me tell you, it's not an Amazon Bestseller for nothing.

The rawness of her short form is very effective in delivering a whole spectrum of emotions. From a teeny tiny pinch to the heart, a mere reminder of your own past struggles; to what felt like a whopping uppercut to the gut. There is melancholy, there is heartbreak, but there are also happy lines that tells us we're only this messed up after everything because that everything was good 'til it lasted. 

My favorites are HEAD COUNT, METAMORPHOSIS, MEMENTO, THE PENSIEVE, and THE WORLD IS OUR SOUVENIR; because they are relatable without sounding cliched and overdone. These, in my opinion, were also the most open to the author's heart in this collection.

My ultimate favorite, though, is the two-stanza, quick-but-deadly TRUTH where the 'villain' is one's self. Self-sabotage is the story of my life, as you all know. XD

Pick this up even when you're doing fine because it is inspiring and because this is a lovely example of turning hurt into beautiful art.

4 of 5 Stars. Break-up chapbooks are there to gather all your pent-up/hidden/repressed emotions and curl them to a ball manageable enough for you to finally let go. This is what it did, and it did it beautifully.

High stress IRL right now so I'll be escaping with a bookstagram! 😉⁣ •⁣ Today's post crosses off "It Happened in the Philippines But NOT in Manila" from my #romanceclassBAPbingo. ⁣ ⁣ I've read The Hometown Hazard by Dawn Lanuza quite a long while ago so please don't ask me about plot/story details and all, bec I won't be able to remember right away (LOL) but I do remember liking this a lot bec of the bestfriend's brother romance, the mystery Jules and Kip had to unveil, and of course, the hometown feels of the setting that is NOT Manila (San Juan, Batangas, maybe?) ⁣ ⁣ There's a scene I couldn't forget: Jules waking up to the sound of roosters from either their backyard or the neighbors, and her coming out of her room and being greeted "Good Morning" by the smell of local coffee. The ~probinsya -ness of it was so precious and in my review when I first read it I noted: "Jules’ annoyance of all the inconveniences she was coming back to in her hometown was so relatable. Her love for her hometown in spite of it, more so."
