Freddie Mercury: Queen Bee

THERE’S nothing like a dearth of hero-stars to make a media industry writhe with despondency. Film moguls, unable to find successors to Monroe and Gable, are making a cult of anti-stars. But the pop industry needs the potent elixir, the excitement of using honest superlatives to sear through the blood, lifting the spirits. And pop scribes, like damp, weary pilgrims waiting for the dawn, have been aching to crown a new hero.

Then, just when the prognosis looked direst, with a dazzling whoooosh, darlings, up popped Freddie Mercury.

Suddenly we’ve discovered in our midst an exotic prancer, a quixotic chancer, an electronic Elgar who has penned some of the gaudiest, soaring rock and roll anthems to be heard in a decade.

Freddie, known for his meticulous attention to detail, couldn’t have planned his heir apparency better. He’s paid his dues. With Queen (Brian May — guitar, John Deacon — bass, Roger Taylor — drums) he’s had four years to survey the scene and build up the frenzied grass-roots following which left him impervious to the lack of affection in other quarters. However, with the delivery of Sheer Heart Attack, all the vehement dampeners with which critics received Queen’s two previous offerings have turned to outpourings of unrestrained enthusiasm.

Freddie’s wearing tight oyster grey satin pants, an antique market cream satin blouse and a scarlet velvet Victorian bed jacket. His hair is cormorant black, he flashes ebony eyes and his smile reveals a row of pearly white teeth which look ready to plunge into a meal of little girl burgers. He’s tapping the carpet with one white boot, the tabletop with a pen and for a moment I wonder anxiously whether I’m facing an irked prima donna. But “no, Mercury isn’t my real name, dear. I changed it from Pluto,” Freddie jibes. His gentle, deadpan camperie breaks the ice.

When you first formed Queen, did you aim pretty high, I asked. “That’s it. The whole group aimed for the top slot. We’re not going to be content with anything less. That’s what we’re striving for. It’s got to be there. I definitely know we’ve got it in the music, we’re original enough… and, now we’re proving it,” said Freddie, being uncharacteristically forceful.

You must have had a lot of self confidence? “You have to have confidence in this business. It’s USELESS saying you don’t need it. If you start saying to yourself ‘maybe I’m not good enough, maybe I’d better settle for second place,’ it’s no good. If you like the icing on the top, you’ve got to have confidence. I was a precocious child. My parents thought boarding school would do me good so they sent me to one when I was seven, dear. I look back on it and I think it was marvellous. You learn to look after yourself and it taught me to have responsibility.”

Your background is quite affluent then? “No it wasn’t as affluent as people think. It was middle-class. But I suppose I gave the appearance of being affluent. I love that. I still do. It’s all part of how you feel and how you project yourself.”

Freddie left boarding school when he was 16. He studied classical piano, to Grade 4, but being an arty lad, his parents encouraged him to develop this creative talent. “I went to Ealing Art School a year after Peter Townshend left. Music was a sideline to everything we did. The school was a breeding ground for musicians. I listened to Hendrix, really. I got my diploma and then I thought I’d chance it as a freelance artist. I tried. I did it for a couple of months, but I’d done it for so long I thought ‘my God, I’ve done enough.’ The interest wasn’t there. And the music thing just grew and grew. Finally I said ‘right, I’m taking the plunge, it’s music.’ I’m one of those people believes in doing those things which interest you. Music is so interesting, dear.”

Were you always a bit of a performer? “Well, on stage I just click. To be honest, performing comes quite easily realty. It doesn’t take me that much. I mean, I know it sounds conceited and there are a lot of setbacks and a lot of strains and nerves, but not nearly as much as there used to be. Now we are a headline band we know people have come to see us. Being support is one of the most traumatic experiences of my life.”

Yes, it seems as it the strain took its toll. Brian dropped out of the first American tour with hepatitis and Freddie was plagued with boils. “I tell you, I feel the after-effects of touring. We finished the British tour last night and I feel as if I’ve done a marathon every night. I’ve got bruises everywhere. Because it’s the music that matters, you’ve got to make sure there are key people around you, taking care of you.”

And now, what about the spectre of your success? Does it loom before you and keep you awake at night? “Quite often I have quite vicious nightmares — like the other night just before the Rainbow concert. We were sleeping in the Holiday Inn and I dreamed I went out on to the hotel balcony and the whole thing fell and I was a heap on the pavement. Really I was petrified when I woke up in the morning. And Roger has this nightmare where he’s drinking a bottle of Coke and the bottle smashes and he has broken glass all the way down his system. Ridiculous sort of things like that are caused by the tension which builds up.”

With all the energy you’re going to be putting into touring in Europe and America in the next few months, are you going to find the time to write? “Well, I don’t ever really sit down at the piano and say ‘right, I’ve got to write a song now.’ I feel a few things and I have ideas. It’s very hard to explain but there are always various ideas going through my head. ‘Killer Queen’ was one song which was really out of the format that I usually write in. Usually the music comes first, but the words came to me, and the sophisticated style that I wanted to put across in the song, came first. No, I’d never really met a woman like that. A lot of my songs are fantasy. I can dream up all kinds of things. That’s the kind of world I live in. It’s very sort of flamboyant, and that’s the kind of way I write. I love it.

“You don’t need money to give an air of being… ” he pauses, as if he’s afraid of revealing too much about himself. “I don’t know — sort of extreme. The showbiz thing of walking into a room and making sure that people know you’re there. I love being able to let myself go at times. The ideal thing for a group that is successful is to churn out more of the formula that worked. But we want to progress in our own terms.”

Will you have to take time off to write new songs? “It depends. Nobody knew we were going to be told we had two weeks to write Sheer Heart Attack. And we had too — it was only thing we could do. Brian was in hospital.”

What do you feel like under that kind of pressure? “Well, ‘Killer Queen’ I wrote in one night. I’m not being conceited or anything, but it just fell into place. Certain songs do. Now, ‘March Of The Black Queen’, that took ages. I had to give it everything, to be self indulgent or whatever. But with ‘Killer Queen’, I scribbled down the words in the dark one Saturday night and the next morning I got them all together and I worked all day Sunday and that was it. I’d got it. It gelled. It was great. Certain things Just come together, but other things you have to work for. The whole band is very particular. We don’t go in for half measures and I’m very hard with myself. There’re no compromises. If I thought a song wasn’t quite right, I’d discard it. I’m very intricate and delicate. You can see that in my paintings. I love painters like Richard Dadd, Mucha and Dali, and I love Arthur Rackham.”

You’re on the way to being a huge androgynous sex symbol. What does it feel like to know that there are thousand’s of lads and lassies out there who want a piece of you for themselves? “It’s a great feeling. I play on the bisexual thing because it’s something else, it’s fun. But I don’t put on the show because I feel I have to and the last thing I want to do is give people an idea of exactly who I am. I want people to work out their own interpretation of me and my image. I don’t want to build a frame around myself and say ‘this is what I am’ or ‘this is all I am.’

“To be honest. I’d like people to think there, is no falsity in me, because what I do is really my character. But I think mystique, not knowing the truth about someone, is very appealing. I’d be doing myself an injustice if I didn’t wear make-up because some people think it’s wrong. Even to talk about being gay used to be obnoxious and unheard of. But gone are those days. There’s a lot of freedom today and you can put yourself across anyway you want to. But I haven’t CHOSEN this image. I’m myself and in fact half the time I let the wind take me.

“I don’t go out to have very gay company but, I tell you, in this business it’s very hard to find friends — to have loyal friends and to keep them. Among my friends are a lot of gay people and a lot of girls and a lot of OLD men. The man I have as a chauffeur — we’ve, built up such a bond, it’s a kind of love, and I don’t care what people think about it. Putting people in different categories is unfair. You have to judge people on what they are.”

What kind of person are you? “How do you expect me to answer a question like that, dear! There are various aspects of me. The thing I treasure most, above music, is meeting people. I like being sociable, going out to functions and things and, generally, I’m likeable I think. But I can change and be very moody and obnoxious. I’m a sort of chameleon. Success is teaching me a lot of things and I’m adapting. You’ve got to learn to come up with decisions very quickly. There’s no beating about the bush in this business.”

Do you think you’re in control of the success trip? “We’re going to try to control it as much as we can. You’ve got to make sure that you don’t ever admit to yourself that this is your peak. If you admit to yourself that this your peak, then you’re on the way down. I really feel that we have so much more to offer. There’s masses waiting in store that we can give.”

How do you feel about the superstar label? “Honestly, labels like that are touch and go with us. We’ve been labelled so many different things and labels are as bad as they are good. If you took labels seriously, you’d be very silly. We were labelled ‘hype’ in the early days. We took offence, but we didn’t take it seriously because we knew what we were about.”

You told me earlier that you love affluence. Now that you’re on the way to becoming a very rich man, what are you going to do with your money?

“Spend it, my dear. I’m the one member of the band for whom money isn’t very endearing. I’m the one who spends it straight off. It just goes. On clothes and I like nice things around me.”

Small delay in any art/writing updates! My fiancé and I are cat-sitting for a little over a week and these fluffy little bastards (affectionate) have declared war on anyone with the audacity to try to sleep between midnight and 5am.

Consolation prize cat pics in the meantime!

Hildy is a little formerly-feral tabby, weighing in at a negligible 10-ish lbs (in comparison to the others). She's a little odd, but quite charming. She goes brrrrp! and ma-maow! whenever she sees us and tries to lick my fiancé's eyelids. We don't know why. It's probably better that we don't know. She's a more recent addition to my friend's household, so I don't know as much about her as the other two yet, but from what I understand her previous owners didn't take care of her at all and basically left her to the land. I will say that my friend has done an amazing job of socializing her and working on her fear-aggression and trust issues. I saw her briefly when she first arrived over a year ago and it's like she's a whole new cat now. 8/10 - Hildy's a little too quick to claw when overexcited for my preferences, but otherwise a lovely little moggy who loves cuddles and pets.

Isaac Catsimov the distinguished (mostly blind at this point) flame-point Ragdoll gentleman, at a respectable 16lbs. Isaac doesn't believe in personal space, and for an old man (he's almost 18 now) he's surprisingly agile, as his pre-dawn parkour sessions can attest to. Great lungs, superb sound system: I do wish he'd sing something other than mournful cat-dirges at 3am however. He also slaps people in the face to 'politely' request a resource of some sort. We both take our thyroid meds together every morning. He's a good sport about it. 9/10 - Isaac loses a point for slapping me in the face this morning with his giant shovel paws because he stood in his own water dish and got fur in it, but I love him so much.

And, saving my personal favourite for last, this is "Big Fellow" Atticus Finch (as he's listed in his vet records) the dark-bodied seal point Ragdoll-Maine Coon mix (and also the grandson of Isaac!), reigning supreme at roughly 20lbs of solid muscle and fluff. He runs like a badger, makes the most terrifyingly deep BAO! sound in the dead of the night when he's bored, and headbutts like a freight train at full speed with faulty breaks. He also likes to hold people's hands and cuddle their arms with all four of his feet. 15/10 - I love him more than life itself, and also fear I am slightly concussed.

The season 2 finale of The Gilded Age brought many of the show's central conflicts to a head, including whether or not The Academy or the Met would win the opera war, who the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) would choose, whether Armstrong (Debra Monk) would ever stop being a pill — and most importantly, if Larry Russell (Harry Richardson) and Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) would ever get together.

The moment finally arrived in the season's final scenes, and it wasn't a mere chaste brush of a gloved hand either. Standing on the doorstep of the Van Rhijn household, Larry walked Marian home from a night at the opera in the early light of dawn. She promised that even with a move on the horizon, she would keep in touch with Larry. Larry's response was to kiss her, drawing a shy, pleased smile from Marian.

Executive producer and writer Sonja Warfield tells EW that the romantic moment came after she directly solicited creator Julian Fellowes. "Julian had long game plans to get them together," she says. "Back then everything was very chaste. You didn't really kiss somebody; you shook hands or something like that. So, I really did want Marian and Larry to kiss and asked Julian if they could please kiss at the end of the season. He granted me my wish."

Though Warfield warns that if they do secure a season 3 (HBO has yet to order more of The Gilded Age), it won't just be smooth sailing through the tunnel of love. Even if Marian will now have a newly empowered Ada (Cynthia Nixon) on her side against what will no doubt be objections from Agnes (Christine Baranski). "Relationships had their challenges in 1884, and they do today," she says. "The modern challenges aren't that different from those challenges. Yes, we're rooting for them. But everything will be complicated."

EW got Warfield to break down more of the finale, including Peggy's (Denée Benton) decision to leave the paper, Ada's sudden new wealth and its implications, and the possibility that Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) has sold her daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga), to a duke solely to win a society war with Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy).

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You all brought Ada some romance this year, only to immediately kill off poor Luke (Robert Sean Leonard). So, I have to ask, why are you so mean?

SONJA WARFIELD: Because that's drama. And back then, most of the time when people had an ache or a pain, it did mean death. I wanted to disrupt the status quo with Ada. I just adore Cynthia Nixon, and her performance was mesmerizing to me, so I wanted her to be empowered to have a love. Agnes is oppressive, and so, I wanted for her to have love and to feel loved and to understand how that helped her in the world. The heart of the show, it's about the warring classes and Ada and Agnes represent that old money, and so, they need to remain intact. That's why he couldn't stay. 

Peggy decides to leave the Fortune (Sullivan Jones) paper. What will that mean for her future? She talks about a novel, but being a journalist seems like such a core part of her identity right now. 

In that time period, a lot of women were writing serialized stories for newspapers, so Peggy's done some of that too. There's versatility in her writing and in her work. Listen, Fortune is great, but he's a bad influence. He drinks a little bit; he's married. Peggy has a whole future ahead of her anywhere she wants to be. So I'm excited for her.

Will she be able to stay away though?

We shall see. He is pretty cute.

Watson (Michael Cerveris) gets this happy ending where he's going to actually go and have a life with his daughter. Will we continue to follow him and how that develops in the future? Or once he leaves the Russell household, will we not really check in with him?

Now, he's going to be living as a gentleman. We've already seen Turner (Kelley Curran) cross over. Anything's possible in America at that time.

Speaking of Turner, we learn in the climax of the finale that both Bertha and George did her dirty behind the scenes, both with the opera box and learning that Bertha wrote Mrs. Astor to get the new Mrs. Winterton kicked out of the Academy. If there is a season 3, how might that come back to bite them?

 Listen, she'll be conniving to take Bertha down. Turner, or Mrs. Winterton, will be in her orbit. There are crimes of opportunity that Turner will be looking out for wherever she can catch Bertha out. And remember, she was the maid and the maids know everything. 

One has to assume she already is blaming the Russells for everything.

Oh, absolutely. She's a smart cookie. She knows what's going on.

Season 1 ended with this very short-lived triumph for Bertha with her party coming off. But it wasn't enough. If there is a season 3, would that be similar? She won this battle. Are there more battles for her to win? 

The thing about power is that it's unquenchable. You get a taste of it, and you thirst for more. Bertha has her sights set on conquering American society.

There is a heavy implication that Bertha won the Duke of Buckingham by selling out her own daughter. Is that a fair reading of that scenario?

I think you're a smart woman and that's an astute reading. Sadly.

George also looks quite concerned with whatever might be happening with the Duke. And we did see him early in the season pledge that he was supportive of Gladys marrying someone she actually loves. So is he also suspicious? Is he still determined to stand firm to that promise?

That's something that will be tested, and we'll have to see where George and Bertha land. This season was great because we saw them, probably for the first time with their marriage, in some real jeopardy that they had not experienced before. What I loved about that is that they still emerged as this power couple, and so we'll see if they can sustain that and how much their marriage can take. Parents often want different things for their children and that can be challenging. 

We've really seen the servants branch out a lot more this season, whether that be going to the opera or this overarching plot line with the alarm clock. Are we trending toward a situation conceivably where servants are leaving their profession or their power dynamic is in flux?

That's the difference between America and the U.K. You're born into a position there, but in America it's supposedly the land of opportunity. Turner married up; we'll have to see what happens with Jack and how he fits into this new world, or if he gravitates back to his old world and what really happens with it. Businesses go bust, anything's possible. 

We've pretty much exclusively seen Larry interested in architecture to this point. So what would going into the alarm clock business potentially look like for him? 

Money. He's young and he gets to explore a lot of things because his father's a mogul.

In the final moment, Ada warns Agnes that things might be a little different. Historically, Ada is pretty good natured. So her being in charge, what do you conceive that looking like? I feel like we're gearing up for the battle of the century between these two sisters. 

Here's the thing, fighting with a sibling is so different than fighting with somebody else. You can go in and you can go deep and you can go back. It's so charged and it's so conflict ridden. At the same time, you can be at each other's throats and then the next minute, you can hug it out. What I love is that Ada didn't just get a lot of money. She was really empowered to be independent with Luke in that relationship. So the power dynamics, it'll be fun to watch what happens.

Does she hold any resentment toward Agnes for how domineering she was that we could see come out?

Listen, Agnes pushes people. Even if you were forgiving and didn't have resentment, she might stir it up again.

This cast is known for its stellar lineup of Broadway talent. Who would be your dream to join the cast next season?

Sutton Foster. That would be big fun.

(THINGS ARE NOT THE BEST FOR THE LADS)

—Riverclan is being led by Magic’s father. Riverclan’s leader is brash and hard on his warriors, often extending apprenticeships at the drop of a hat. He expects battle-ready warriors and punishes slackers. He apprenticed his daughter a moon and a half earlier than he should have, and starts apprenticeships half a moon earlier when kits show promise.

Very ridged in clan rivalries, the leader is quite prickly. After his daughter fled, even more so.

Riverclan, quietly, is planning an attack on Shadowclan

—Shadowclan is currently being led by Wolfpaw’s (Krow’s) father. Violent and bloodthirsty, this leader apprentices kits at four moons old, but expects them to be nothing more than scouts who run back for reinforcements until five and a half moons of age, when they are strongly encouraged to prove themselves.

Due to their leader, Shadowclan is on the brink of war with Thunderclan.

Shadowclan’s leader punishes warriors and apprentices harshly, physically and with grueling tasks. Warriors retire older than other clans. Shadowclan cats are often worked into the ground. A sort-of Tigerstar situation, but not entirely. Shadowclan’s leader keeps steady supply of deathberries and holly. Cats are encouraged to kill in battle.

In Shadowclan, you will either die for your leader or die trying kill your leader. Wolfpaw (Krow) is currently rallying a rebellion. It wants to be leader itself, because it trusts no one else with the job.

—Thunderclan’s leader is Monarchwing’s (Rasbi’s) father, Thunderclan’s deputy is her mother. Thunderclan follows the warrior code dutifully. They are not outright aggressive, but they are valiantly defensive. They are currently on the brink of war with Shadowclan, due to Shadowclan attempting to encroach on their territory and attack their patrols.

—Windclan’s current leader, Harestar, is a very peaceful cat. Windclan follows the warrior code dutifully.

Windclan’s previous leader was Fernspark’s (Owen’s) father, who was very, very violent. Under Windclan’s previous leader, a war waged with Thunderclan. As soon as Harestar took the reigns, a peace treaty was sought out with Thunderclan.

Harestar became leader through the chaos of the previous leader and deputy dying at the same time. It was claimed by a surviving warrior—from the battle that killed both Windclan’s previous leader and deputy—that when the previous leader died, the previous deputy told the clan to make his son (Harefur) leader as he died. Two other surviving warriors corroborated this story, one other said they were semi-nearby but heard none of it, and the others were too preoccupied with battle. There was debate, but Harestar did take power.

Throughout this debate, Fernspark (Owen) approved the choice of Harecloud as leader.

—Skyclan is lead by a leader fearful of the clashing between Shadowclan and Thunderclan. Skyclan’s leader knows they will be caught in the crossfire, and wants to strengthen the clan as much as possible. Medicine cats are encouraged and any cat who will remain loyal to the clan is allowed to join, doesn’t matter if they are loner, kittypet, or clan cat.

Skyclan follows the warrior code dutifully.

—Badgernose (Soup) was originally a loner, who had run far from her last group, but found acceptance as a medicine cat from starclan

—Badgernose, in her old group, went by the name “El” and was referred to commonly as “Death’s El” due to her poisons. She specialized in finding poisons and ways to utilize them against other creatures and cats. She hated it, but she stayed because her group insisted that, with her help, they could get her brother—who’d been kidnapped by a rival group—back. So when she learned her brother had died, and they’d been lying to her for moons about his death, she put poison in the prey and dipped

—Fernspark’s (Owen’s) suffix was originally ‘claw’, given to him by his father—the previous leader, but when Harestar seized power, he requested it be changed. Originally, he’d wanted to ask for his name to be “Fernpoppy” but after his father lost his last life in a battle, he’d decided on “Fernspark” after his father’s old suffix.

He disproved of his father’s actions, and his father was not the best or kindest father, and Fernspark’s a little glad he’s gone, but he feels he should offer some sort of tribute. Make the suffix “spark” into something not only associated with war.

—Fallowheart (Squidney) dislikes her prefix. It was changed from “Rabbit” to “Fallow” because the Riverclan leader figured she wasn’t working hard enough

—Fallowheart (Squidney) is half-rogue

—Juniperthorn (Bekyamon) is half-clan. Half Skyclan, half Windclan

—Fogrunner (Mowhee) is a flight risk. His leader is very funny.

—Houndpaw (Oeca) is bloodthirsty. So is Wolfpaw (Krow). They both understand this. They do not like each other.

—Redseed (Reddoons) used to be a kittypet. His Twolegs lost their house in a fire, and Redseed—injured by fire and smoke inhalation—was taken in by Thunderclan. He gets routine check-ups for his lungs, and is told to not exert himself

—Fernspark’s (Owen’s) father was killed in a battle with Thunderclan. Fernspark’s (Owen’s) mother was kidnapped by another clan, but when given opportunity to leave, she had decided to stay.

—Fernspark (Owen), Starlingsong (Magic), Wolfpaw (Krow), & Monarchwing (Rasbi) are nepo babies (All of them are the child of a current/past leader)

—Starlingsong (Magic) left her original clan (Riverclan) for Skyclan to escape her father, who is Riverclan’s leader. She chose Skyclan because it was far from Riverclan, and her mother had fled there as well. When she arrived, she was crushed when she learned that her mother had been killed by a Shadowclan warrior only half a moon before.

—Starlingsong (Magic) was Riverclan’s previous deputy.

—When Starlingsong (Magic) lived in Riverclan, her name had been Starlingwing, but when she moved to Skyclan, Skyclan’s leader talked to her about a symbolic name change, to which she asked for “song”.

—Daisyshade (Greacie) assists her medicine cat with herb duties. Because of this, the medicine cat tries their very best to shape Daisyshade (Greacie) into a field medic

—Monarchwing’s (Rasbi’s) sister, Aldercloud, is secretly mates with the current Windclan leader. Monarchwing is keeping this quiet because they believe the rule against half clan relationships is unjust. They’re concerned for their sister and hope things work out.

—Juniperthorn (Bek) is below average at climbing trees. This is mildly problematic because she is a Skyclan cat.

—Juniperthorn (Bek) questions if they should move to Windclan, because she doesn’t think she belongs in Skyclan. But she’s also not the fastest, so she doesn’t think she’d do any better there.

—Fruit trio are friends. They make it work.

—There are a lot of friendships between cats of different clans

—Poppypetal (Guts) used to be a loner living on twoleg streets and back alleys, where they went by the name “Bear” and protected and lived beside their best friend. When their friend was hit by a monster and died, they lost their head and got caught by Twolegs, sent to a shelter. Poppypetal, then “Bear”, was sent to a foster home, where they booked it into the forest as soon as possible. Eventually, they were found by a Thunderclan patrol, decided to join Thunderclan, and changed their name to Poppypetal.

—Fernspark (Owen) is not the deputy of Windclan, because Harestar had been much too paranoid about Fernspark being like his father. They’re closer now.

—My thought process with why Fernspark (Owen) isn’t batshit, because, well, cat war and people war are different, and each camp is basically the HEART of a “country.” There are no unprotected “villages” to massacre. And the whole reason C!Owen accepted his father was right about demons in cannon was because demons burned his village and butchered his people. So the whole of Windclan fighting, with Windclan and Thunderclan holding pretty much equal strength in the lake territories here (as district 15 & 6 must have in cannon, for the war to last as long as it did), Windclan would be able to defend it’s main camp.

Sure, shit could happen, but there would be no utter destruction. Fernspark (Owen) would not be so blinded by grief and rage as to accept his father’s ideologies so easily, and be more open to see the bloodshed on both sides.

—Houndpaw is older than Wolfpaw

—Spiderpool (Spidey), Starlingsong (Magic), and Wolfpaw (Krow) have higher-than-average connections to starclan

—Wolfpaw’s underground rebellion includes Spiderpool (Spidey), Daisyshade (Greacie), and more people from those three’s assorted backstories. I’m thinking cats from other nearby clans could assist as well

whats the history of the clans? did thunderstar, shadowstar, etc still found them?

Great question, my friend. The full history of all of them in one post would be a lot, so, for now, lets just cover Thunderclan

The Mythology

As most cultures do, Thunderclan has various myths and oral stories passed down through generations telling how the clans came to be. Thunderclan, specifically, is said to have been formed initially as Lionclan.

Now, a bit of actual real world history here, New Forest National Park- the southern english place that the forest territories are based off of- were originally the homeland of early Anglo-Saxon tribal groups, but it was then proclaimed a royal forest by William the Conquerer in 1079, first recorded being called Nova Foresta in 1086. It only actually became a site of scientific interest in 1971, becoming a National Park in 2005.

All that to say, it's been around for a long damn time. And the cats know of this, they don't have a concept of human years, but they say Lionclan was around 'before Starclan', meaning Lionclan predates their current concept of modern cat ancestors.

In their mythos, Lionclan was a proud, strong clan of massive, mane-bearing cats that hunted in groups and had a singular leader, with a roar capable of being heard by every other clan, no matter where they were. They hunted large prey, like deer and boar, on their own, something that a modern cat thunderclan cat can only take down with the help of an entire patrol.

It's an understatement to say Thunderclan is still a proud clan, and they take much, much pride in occasionally still looking like the Lions that they came from. Lionheart, Sunstar, Cricketsun, and Lionblaze are the best examples of this.

According to their stories, however, Lionclan eventually grew smaller in size, as twolegs moved in more heavily than before, and the large prey they hunted became more and more scarce, being hunted by twolegs instead. This is what they consider to be the beginning of 'Thunderclan' and the Modern Cats.

(Dawn Of The Clans as an arc did not happen. I refuse to acknowledge it as a canonical part of this story, so im making up my own.)

They called the founder of Thunderclan 'Thunderstar' not because it was his name, but because of the lightning-shaped scar across his face, a mark of his survival against a massive beast. He was said to be cat-sized but distinctly Lion in appearance, and led his clan well, despite a series of tragedies that led to his early leadership.

When he died sacrificing his life for his clan, they created the Thunderclan Sigil- the cat outline with the lightning bolt- in honor of him. He still exists in Starclan, as his clan remembers him fondly. It is rumored that Sunstar was the last descendant of Thunderstar, though of course nobody can confirm that.

The True History

Now, we get to the truth of the matter. Lionclan, very simply, did not exist. The most truth to it is likely a group of zoo or perhaps circus lions escaped a long time ago, and oral tale of the nearby housecats became fantastical after so long.

The Prophecy Begins is set somewhere around 2009, i'd say. The clans were founded probably at the turn of the century, in 1900 or just before. Long enough that it seems ancient to clan cats, but not nearly old compared to literally any human civilization.

Thunderstar was not a 'small lion', but instead a Maine Coon. The Clans were not, in fact, descended from big cats at all, but instead the result of kittypets escaping their owners and becoming feral.

In fact, Thunderstar was not his name whatsoever. His scar was true, though, he did have a lightning-shaped scar across his face, but it was caused by a fox, not some mysterious beast. His true name has been lost to time, but he was not, at any point, called the suffix '-star', as the use of 'star' to designate the leader didn't happen until about 2 leaders later.

He was Thunder's Rule, King of Thunderclan. A King who's bloodline continued ruling until his grandson stepped down and put in the deputy and -star concepts.

It is true that Sunstar is a very distant descendant of him, but his bloodline survived, through Featherwhisker. The medicine cat who got away with breaking code, by having a daughter. Willowpelt and her lineage are the last line of Thunderstar, though i haven't decided wether that gets lost to time or Jayfeather manages to figure it out during his ghost walks. Either way, as of Arc 7, the most recent Thunderkin are Greykit, Bristlekit, and Stemkit.

Thunderstar is still very much alive and well in Starclan, though he keeps to the edges of the territory because he's still salty he lost his bloodline's "right" to the leadership of thunderclan. If he could contact his relatives, he'd be hounding them to get the title back. And it might even work, but the rest of the leaders since his reign stop him from trying.

Unfortunately, his kits and grandson have been forgotten and faded out of starclan, as the 'rulers to star' distinction was never made in their mythos.

In terms of how well he ruled... well, his clan thrived, that was for sure. Unfortunately that was because of the sneaky, tricking ways he fought his wars, and the fact he might have commited a regicide or two to keep 'unhelpful' people out of his way. But Thunderclan doesn't remember that part, they only care about the fact he 'led his clan to success', no matter how much bloodshed was caused by it.

Sleep Enthusiasts: Adult cats sleep for an average of 12-16 hours a day. Kittens and older cats may sleep even more. This behavior conserves energy for their bursts of activity.

Unique Purring: Cats are the only known domestic animals that purr both when inhaling and exhaling. Scientists believe that purring can have a calming effect on both the cat and its human companion.

Variety of Breeds: There are numerous cat breeds, each with its own characteristics, appearance, and personality traits. From the regal Siamese to the fluffy Maine Coon, there's a cat breed to suit various preferences.

It varies what she does with her afternoon; but it usually ends with her at the park to skate before she had to head back home.  ⇝ Rehearses weekly with her band. She replaced their former bassist after he left for college across the country last year. Since then she’s learned all their discography (7 and a half songs) and has contributed a bit as well. In a couple of months they’ll finally have an album to put out.  ⇝ After every break up she’ll have Cher’s Life After Love on repeat. No matter the length of the relationship. It could have been over in just a week and she’ll turn to this song to cope.  ⇝ She has a son. He brings some unnecessary toxic male energy into her life but she loves him nonetheless. It’s like he can’t help it, since he’s a cat and all. A gorgeous black maine coon she named Shadow. Yes, after one of her favorite Sonic the Hedgehog characters.   ⇝ Her father gambles. He’ll pop in about once a month if he’s short on rent. But the opposite is true too. Should he win big he always saves a bit to repay her. But it’s a vicious cyle.
