Friendship Before Money. Two men, a drifter and an eccentric mortician strike up a friendship and start a less than legit business partnership. Interesting to see Greg’s attempt at writing a movie, it felt art house-y, B-movie-ish, but of a better budget and production quality than The Room. Aside from the trailer and that Greg wrote it, I knew almost nothing about it going into it. Apparently it’s based on a story from one of their road trips, and Greg thought there was “a performance within Tommy and the right team could pull it out of him”, that Wiseau “deserved a role to shine in, free of the exploitation that others had thrust upon him in his post-Room-on-screen appearances over the years.” (an interview w/the MacGregors for hiddenremote.com) Also according to that interview they filmed in 25+ locations in 3 states (whoa) and 4 people (the brothers, Greg and one other person who wasn’t Wiseau) made all the decisions, sometimes on the fly. The spiral staircase in this volume is an unintentional nod to The Room, as I believe are the line “Oh Hai, Jon” and the conversation over throwing a basketball back and forth, though they intended to make it with no connections to the The Room. “This is not a sequal, prequel, or alternative universe for Johnny and Mark.”(hiddenremote.com interview) It was definitely interesting and had a sort of surreal ending (which keeps the interest in Volume Two up) that seemed dream-like? We’ll have to see. I wonder why Jon was mute/silent in the beginning and who’s blood(?) was on his hands? How much of Harvey’s lines were adlibbed? Also Jon’s eyes moved around too much, which was a bit unsettling. There was 100% more Wiseau singing and Brett Favre headshots than I thought there’d be. I hope they include another music video with the second one! #ssmovieof2018 #comedy #thriller #TommyWiseau #KristenStephensonPino #VinceJolivette #PaulScheer #RickEdwards #TomBissell (who wrote The Disaster Artist with Greg!) #HarryBraxtonDavis (the flashbacks to young Jon looked like they were from the 50’s) #DavidSestero writer: #GregSestero director: #JustiacGregor movie of 2018 number 10) #BestFriendsVolumeOne
