David Hidalgo & Marc Ribot Duo ロス・ロボスのデヴィッド・ヒダルゴと変幻自在のギタリストのマーク・リボウのデュオでのライブがどんなステージになるのか期待しながら観ました。 カントリー、ブルース、チカーノなどルーツミュージックを中心に展開し��いステージの様に感じられるも2人の化学反応が凄い！ 演奏はアバンギャルド一歩手前に抑え、妖しさ満開な音世界に鳥肌もんでした！ たぶんセトリも曲の展開も特に練ってはなく、その場の雰囲気を重視しながら進み即興で演奏してるのが印象的。 いつものクアトロを想像すると客層はかなり高く下手したら俺が1番若いのでは？と思うぐらいの年齢層でした。 マーク・リボウは特に好きなギタリストの1人で知るきっかけはコステロのバックを演った時でした。遠い昔、梅田にあった今は亡きビートルズ専門店◯ットバッ◯にコステロのスパイクがあり店頭の解説に「ギターのマーク・リボウはポールマッカートニーの変名」と書いてあったので、ガキだった私はスパイクの輸入盤を買い信じてました(でもベースのポールは本名で書いてあるので不思議でしたが…) その後マイティライク〜のアルバムと来日でポールではなくマーク・リボウて本人やんけ！と知りビートルズしか聞かない人の話は信用しないことに決めましたw その時のマーク・リボウのテンションの高い演奏は今でも忘れられません！ #davidhidalgo #marcribot #davidhidalgoandmarcribotduo #live (梅田クラブクアトロ（umeda club quattro）)

Now Hear This: Various Artists - “Ripple”

This ain’t your Deadhead daddy’s “Ripple.”

The Playing for Change Foundation - “created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music,” per its website - recruited musicians from across the globe to record a moving rendition of Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” that brings the song’s innate poignancy to the fore.

The four-minute video features known and unknown musicians - David Hidalgo, David Crosby and Jimmy Buffet, taped individually in separate outdoor locales, handle lead vocals and guitars; and that’s Bill Kreutzmann on drums - collaborating on the Dead classic from such exotic locations as South Africa, Congo, Italy, Israel, Ghana and other countries.

Several U.S. cities are represented, including Chicago and L.A. Viewers get to meet Washboard Chaz from New Orleans along with other professional and amateur musicians on the video, which is dedicated to Jerry Garcia.

Children’s choirs, string quartets, talking drums, accordion and a slew of other instruments add to the mix, giving this paragon of Americana a world-music flavor that’s oh, so sweet.

There are a couple of eye-popping surprises, so watch closely and listen often. This is one version of “Ripple” you don’t want to miss.

Rewind: Los Lobos - Colossal Head (1996)

Disembodied voices, sound effects and lo-fi production that makes for percussion that sounds as if it’s being played underwater are among the features that make Colossal Head unique in Los Lobos’ discography.

And although it resembles the Louie Perez-David Hidalgo spinoff Latin Playboys more than The Wolves, Colossal Head also contains some familiar elements. Chief among these are Steve Berlin’s baritone sax, a smattering of bluesy numbers penned and sung by Cesar Rosas, a couple of tracks in Spanish and David Hidalgo’s soaring vocals.

Colossal Head consists of 11 compact, three- to five-minute cuts that include rockers like “Mas y Mas” and “Everybody Loves a Train,” the sparse balladry of “Little Japan,” the crunchy blues of “This Bird’s Got to Fly” and the album-closing instrumental “Buddy Ebsen Loves the Night Time,” which gives guitarists Rosas and Hidalgo a chance to show off their respective chops.

Primary lyricist Perez takes a minimalist approach, while his partner, composer Hidalgo, goes all in with dreamy ambiance. Latin Playboys band members and album co-producers Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake seal the ethereal deal with superb studio trickery.

The title track borrows from “Little Red Riding Hood” and coupled with hypnotic music, strives to create a robotic dance craze.

What big eyes you have/what big lips you have/what a nice hat/I love you/what you said/I can’t hear you/what you said/do the colossal head.

"Life is Good" takes a similar tack with Hidalgo singing about getting "all happy ‘cause my life is so damn good" and the simple chorus of "ooh la la." A party is heard raging just below the music.

Simplicity never sounded so sweet.

Because of its experimental nature, Colossal Head is not the best place for newcomers to Los Lobos to begin; however, the experimental nature is what makes the album a joy to return to again and again.
