[ad_1] LSG owner Dr. Sanjiv Goenka with their new mentor, Zaheer Khan (PC: Debasis Sen) The Team Being one of the relatively inexperienced franchises, Lucknow Super Giants have not done badly in their three years in the Indian Premier League. They have not reached the final yet, but qualifying for the playoffs and finishing third on both occasions in 2022 and 2023 can’t be called bad. However, what perhaps pricked their pride was the seventh-place finish in 2024. They won seven and lost seven of their 14 matches, which was not enough. This is an ambitious team. They believe they can do better than they have so far. There are indications that the team owners and coaches have thought afresh. Leaving out KL Rahul from the list of players retained is an indication of their new thought process. They are ready for harsh calls, in order to reach their goal. Auction Purse After spending Rs 51 crore in retaining five players, LSG will need a clear and calculated strategy at the auctions. They have Rs 69 crore remaining in their kitty. It looks substantial in one way, but not quite when you consider that they have a quite a few buying to do. If two more players cost them around Rs 20 crore or thereabouts, they will not have a lot of money to recruit the rest, assuming that each franchise will go in with a roster of around 20 players. Retaining Nicholas Pooran (Rs 21 crore), Ravi Bishnoi and Mayank Yadav (Rs 11 crore each) and the uncapped duo of Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan (Rs 4 crore each) means they have just about ticked a few boxes. Both Yadav and Mohsin have had fitness issues. They need back-ups and smart buys. Going for the spectacular and paying a fortune for an individual may be counterproductive. Areas they need to strengthen Securing the services of two Indian fast bowlers suggests they have some part of this department covered. If they remain fit — and that’s a big if — Yadav and Mohsin can be a handful. But they still need more fast bowlers and spinners. Bishnoi seems to be an investment with an eye on the future, but they need more. Once again, they have to shop sensibly instead of going for broke on one. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here LSG’s official post on Nicholas Pooran (PC: LSG/X) While Pooran is a “natural choice” for retaining, as pointed by team owner Sanjiv Goenka, this team needs a lot of reinforcements in batting. Badoni is another who they have kept. They have to have about at least five more batters. The requirement is stronger in batting than bowling, as far as this team goes. It’s not going to be an easy auction for this LSG side. Players they would target Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer —there are two former IPL captains in that auction list. Both can be handy additions because LSG would perhaps prefer someone with some leading experience. The problem is, even one of them will cost a bomb. Phil Salt, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aiden Markram, Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tripathi or even David Warner and Quinton de Kock — there are more names to choose from. As far as all-rounders go, there are several including Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh, Liam Livingstone. Washington Sundar is another prominent name. When it comes to pure bowlers, Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Anrich Nortje, Noor Ahmad, Rahul Chahar and  Vaibhav Arora will perhaps be on the radar of more than one franchises. Let’s see, what the LSG management goes for. Players they would like to buy back They can only buy back one, since they have already done that with five. One Right to Match (RTM) card remains with LSG. De Kock, Stoinis and Krunal Pandya appear to be the leaders in that race before the action shifts to Jeddah. No one can say for certain, the team might as well go for someone like Naveen-ul-Haq. That said, this is going to be another tricky call. [ad_1] One of the greatest batters of modern era, AB de Villiers has revealed that he was snubbed by erstwhile Delhi Daredevils after spending three seasons at the IPL franchise. Before making it big at the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the South African batting legend had three lukewarm season with the Delhi franchise, now known as Delhi Capitals. But in a team meeting, also attended by explosive Australian opener David Warner, de Villiers was told that he was going to be "retained" but it happened otherwise as the franchise released him before the 2011 auction.Recalling the incident in his YouTube channel, 'AB de Villiers 360', the former South African skipper said: "When I played in the 2010 season, I got called into the office and was told ‘you are going to get retained, young AB de Villiers'." "I sat alongside David Warner in that meeting. It came as a huge surprise to me a week or two later when I realised I had been released."So the communication wasn't great back in the day, that must be different these days but it's not a nice feeling," De Villiers added. The 39-year-old said it was a huge blow and he was very nervous before the auction."You're unsure of your career, at that time in 2010 I think I only played five games in that IPL season so a lot of doubts crept up in my mind."But I did have a very good international season. I kept playing good cricket and luckily for me the auction happened and I got picked up by RCB, and it changed my life forever, so great memories with regards to that."I was so nervous. Then I got the news from Twitter that I was picked by RCB and the next moment Virat (Kohli) called." De Villiers went on to mesmerise the Indian fans with his stroke-making and formed a dream combination with star batter Kohli at the top of the order for 11 seasons.De Villiers said the released players should not feel disappointed as it's not the "end of the road"."For all the released players, it's not the end of the road, keep a close eye on the auction. But if you're not picked up, it gives an opportunity to go back to the drawing board and work even harder," he added.Topics mentioned in this article [ad_2] Source link

Cricket: Expanded IPL returns to India with COVID curbs - Al Jazeera English
Galaxy of top names and two new franchises expand the world’s richest cricket competition to 10 teams for its 15th edition. The Indian Premier League returns for its biggest season on Saturday, with a galaxy of top names and two new franchises expanding the world’s richest cricket competition to 10 teams for its 15th edition. But crowds in the cricket-crazy nation will, initially at least, be limited to 25 percent capacity with group games restricted to four venues – one in Pune and three in Mumbai. The venues for the three playoff matches and the May 29 final are yet to be announced. International T20 greats such as Australia’s David Warner and England’s Jos Buttler will be back for two months of high-octane cricket, but fellow Englishman Ben Stokes and West Indies veteran big-hitter Chris Gayle are big names who will be missing. The teams will be divided into two groups of five, based on their previous IPL records, for a 70-match regular season that promises to be the first completed entirely in India since 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic. “This season is going to be with crowds and we are hoping to have full capacity soon,” Arun Dhumal, treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told AFP news agency. “The new teams bring a lot of excitement and after the player auction, in a way, all the teams are new. There is a lot of new blood and we are hoping that it will be exciting for the players and the fans.” The 10 teams splurged $75m to buy 204 players in last month’s auction with Mumbai Indians bringing back Ishan Kishan for a whopping $2m. England batter Liam Livingstone was the most expensive overseas player, costing the Punjab Kings $1.52m to bolster their bid for a first IPL title. The two new teams, set up at a combined cost of a staggering $1.6bn, are Gujarat Titans, owned by United States venture capital fund CVC, and Lucknow Super Giants, backed by Indian tycoon Sanjiv Goenka. The Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians have been the most successful IPL team, winning a record five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Chennai Super Kings, led by veteran former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, are the defending champions and will open the season against Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan, at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Saturday. The two-month extravaganza will see 74 matches in all with teams coached by some of cricket’s former greats including Australians Ricky Ponting and Tom Moody, Stephen Fleming of New Zealand and Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka. Debutants Gujarat Titans have snapped up highly-rated spinner Rashid Khan of Afghanistan, but the explosive pace of England’s Jofra Archer may not be on display for Mumbai Indians after he missed the Ashes in Australia with an elbow injury. Of the home superstars, Virat Kohli will be under pressure after stepping down as captain of India and enduring, by his lofty standards, a lean spell with the bat having not scored an international century since November 2019. Having tried and failed to win the IPL title for nine seasons as skipper of Royal Challengers Bangalore, “King Kohli” has also stepped aside with South Africa’s Faf du Plessis taking charge. “(Kohli) doesn’t look that confident but he also needs a bit of luck. I am sure you will enjoy the same Virat, batting very freely, very dominating,” Vijay Lokapally, a veteran journalist and a Kohli biographer, told AFP. “And it’s good if we expect him to excel every time, it speaks for the respect he has in the cricket world.” The tournament began in India in April last year but had to be suspended at the halfway point a month later as COVID-19 infections surged across the country. It eventually resumed in September in the United Arab Emirates, with Chennai Super Kings beating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final on October 15 in Dubai. The pandemic also forced the IPL to be played in the UAE in 2020. Follow Al Jazeera English: source Read the full article
