I am very proud to announce that I have been in touch with two people involved with the original 1976 production of Ken Hill's Phantom of the Opera: John Hartoch (Raoul) and Claire Lyth (Design) who have provided me with these photos! For those unaware, this production is not the same as the later Ken Hill adaptation that would play from 1985 onward: It even had a different score, which has been described as "more contemporary" as opposed to the opera music the reworked version used. Photos of this production have never been available publicly online before, atleast not in any circles I've seen. Some of these are freshly scanned. I am releasing these photos ahead of a documentary on the Ken Hill Phantom I eventually plan on releasing. I hope you look forward to it and enjoy these photos.

Bernie Marsden: Where's My Guitar?: An Inside Story of British Rock and Roll (2021)
Some of rock's most interesting autobiographies are written, not by the superstars, who are all to often prone to egotistical embellishment, selective memory, or tunnel-vision, but by their lesser-known handlers (managers, road crew, etc.) or henchmen.
Journeyman guitarist Bernie Marsden's modestly entertaining Where's My Guitar?: An Inside Story of British Rock and Roll isn't one of them -- HA! -- but I would still recommend it to any fan of '70s and '80s hard rock, in general, and of David Coverdale's Whitesnake, specifically.
The consummate sideman, Marsden tried but failed to lead his own combos (Clockwork Mousetrap, Skinny Cat -- remember them? Thought not) out of the late '60s, before joining a succession of groups in the early '70s (UFO, Wild Turkey, Babe Ruth) with whom he frustratingly didn't record; only played live.
Finally, Marsden was recruited by Deep Purple veterans Jon Lord and Ian Paice into their post-Purple venture, Paice Ashton Lord, and appeared on their lone LP in '76; this, in turn, introduced him to Coverdale just as Whitesnake was coming together.
Over the next few years, Bernie co-wrote many of the group's best-loved songs, two of which -- "Here I Go Again" and "Fool for Your Loving" -- ironically became huge hits only after Coverdale had replaced Marsden with younger, prettier hair metal players.
But those royalties (when they were fucking paid!) were obviously welcome for a working musician with a family to support, and though he spent the next few decades confined to lower-profile projects, Marsden never plays the spurned victim or bitter outcast.
Instead, he largely accepts his career's many ups-and-downs with agreeable, down-to-earth equanimity, and, though he does spill a fair amount of juicy gossip (you'll be happy to know), Bernie also seemed to be genuinely grateful for the opportunity to pursue his dream.
Bernie Marsden sadly passed away last year at the age of 72, and while I would eagerly read a David Coverdale biography, if and when he pens one, I doubt it'll be half as honest and truthful as this humble memoir by one of his humble henchmen.
Featured Records:
Whitesnake: Ready an’ Willing (1980)
Whitesnake: Saints & Sinners (1982)
Whitesnake: Live … In the Heart of the City (1980)
