For me reading Fire&Blood it was clear to me that Daemon and Nettles were lovers but it wasn’t until I read about how when she left, Caraxes shattered every window in Jonquils Tower as she was leaving did I truly become convinced they were in love.

That scene was hands down the most romantic moment of Fire & Blood♥️ You can try to deny a lot of different aspects of their relationship, but yeah Caraxes shattering literally every window at the sight of Nettles leaving(and she's crying herself) shows how much Daemon genuinely loved her and she him. Homeboy was in pain and I will be crying when it happens on screen😭

They may have only known each other for a few months, but in those months they became each other's most important person😭

Sorry if I derailed your post about Nettles I tend to be in a minority opinion about every possible ship-I’ve never even seen my personal take on Alyssmond. I do think that Daemon is fascinated by Nettles and is infatuated with her I just don’t think that he’s capable of loving her or anyone really. Maybe Viserys or Laena in the book. I realize that many people think Daemon is hot stuff but I just don’t get the appeal

No, you didn't derail since it was on topic. Yeah, I get having a problem with the ships of HOTD or not exactly shipping them completely. As far as Nettles and Daemon go I wouldn’t say that your opinion is a minority opinion. Most people in the fandom don’t believe that Daemon actually loved her.

They think he either used her for a good time, he groomed her, or she is somehow his child(adopted or biological which is weird because fathers don’t bathe with their grown daughters, but this fandom is weird and moronic at best). So the opinion that Daemon loves and legitimately cares for Nettles with no ulterior motive is actually the minority opinion.

The general consensus before the show was that he loved Laena the most out of all of his wives(her death scene is very touching in the book).

However, after they partially race-bent Laena, the people behind HOTD proceeded to crap all over her character and her importance to Daemon which gave Daemyra stans(who were also next to nonexistent before the show) the go-ahead to say Rhaenyra was the love of Daemons life despite choke gate and the lack of supporting evidence from the book🙃

Now as far as the Daemon being incapable of loving anyone besides Viserys and Laena in the books(and I guess because he never physically assaulted her she’s still technically his most beloved wife in the show) this is where I disagree with the majority of the fandom.

Daemon did love Nettles. I say this because when push came to shove and he would have defended her life at the expense of his own:

Daemon did not have to save her seeing how the orders in Rhaenyra’s letter only pertained to Nettles.

He could’ve easily told Maester Norren to call in the goons and do with Nettles as they wished. She’s a poor penniless girl. Her head is wanted by the queen, his wife. No one is going to miss her, and you said it yourself, Daemon is not a benevolent guy.

He has ordered the murder of a literal child who was his great-nephew. He murdered his second wife’s uncle in the books despite his love for her.

He could’ve abandoned Nettles the moment she became an inconvenience, but he chose to draw his sword and possibly facedown all of Lord Moonton’s men rather than abandon her to the wolves.

Of course you can counter and say that “well Nettles wouldn’t be in this situation if Daemon hadn’t slept with her in the first place so of course he spared her,” but a. You would be taking away her own agency(because despite what this fandom says according to GRRM she’s a grown woman) and b. Once again Daemon would not just save someone at the expense of his own life when he gain’s absolutely nothing from it.

Lastly, even the people at Maidenpool(Lord Moonton’s brother) make note of how much Daemon cares about her:

So going against fandom consensus, based on all the evidence, I do believe that Daemon genuinely loved Nettles. For that reason, while yes Nettles could do better, she is with a man who loves her to the point where he would lay down his life so that she can live.

I do have my theories on why people(not necessarily you because you yourself said that you have unpopular opinions on multiple ships) are so reluctant to admit that Daemon loved Nettles, but at this point, I feel like I’m repeating myself.

I’ll just end this by saying that it’s due to the fact that Daemon leaves their (white) Valyrian queen for a “lowly” Black woman. Aka misogynoir(anti-Black racism + sexism directed at Black women) once again rearing its ugly head.

I'd really like to say it's more complex than that, but this is the same fandom where you have people throwing a fit over Nettles being in the show:

This treatment happens a lot in fandoms when there are Black women involved with a male fave or even when she deigns to exists and be an actual character. By a lot, I mean every single time., Most recently with The Bear, but also with other media like Marvel, Sleepy Hollow, and Star Trek.

Stitches blog is a goldmine on fandom misogynoir so I’d highly suggest everyone check it out.

With Black women characters it’s always “They could do better” or “They don't need a romantic arc” if they can’t use the first excuse.

When you say these statements you are venturing into putting Black women back into a very narrow box of characterization that limits her because in shows, movies, books, etc. Black women traditionally are rarely positioned as the love interest. Not to mention how often times these statements are made by the very same people who ship white couples with the same dynamics as the ship with a Black woman

Case in point, I had someone get mad at me for shipping Shuri and Namor(from Black Panther), not because Namor kills Shuri’s mother Queen Ramonda, but because Namor, who is 500 years old and basically immortal, is “too old” for Shuri who is only in her early 20s:

Are Daemon and Nettles perfect? No, but it's a nice change to see a Black woman in media being cared for which is why I find it irritating when people try to deny Nettles a full story arc and instead want to make her into Rhaenyra’s sidekick/sexless pet.

It's so sad that we never got to know what Daemon truly thinks of his Netty, he spent his whole life in wrapped with the idea of Valaryian blood purity and Targaryeon rule but a young bastard girl comes by and turns his whole world, his whole life upside down in just a few years? In the end he refuses his queen, his Targaryeon wife and also the fact that Daemon was so anguished with the loss of Nettles that the emotion was strong enough for Caraxes to cry out and SHATTER windows? That fact right there solidifies the fact that Daemon loved Nettles, his own dragon screamed for her when he could not. But I want to know what was going through his mind ad he was falling for her.

Yeah, Daemon met Nettles once Team Black took King’s Landing around the first moon of 130 AC and they part early into the fifth moon of that year.

He spent nearly 50 years of his life believing in Valyrian supremacy and Targaryen exceptionalism and then he met her. Her very existence breaks all those beliefs. Those last few months taught him more than all of his years(well maybe not more, but they definitely had the most impact on him in the end). He goes against everything he knows for her when it would be easy enough to just abandon her and “come home.” Come back to what he knows, but he doesn’t. He sticks by her and he saves her.

Let us not mention that scene where Caraxes literally expresses Daemon’s inner rage at being parted from her. If that’s not the most romantic scene in Fire & Blood then I don’t know what is🤷🏽‍♀️ Nettles might not have been his first love, but she was his last.

Unfortunately, because F&B is written as a historical text we do not get to see into the minds of characters like with GOT/ASOIAF. So our only hope for a canon depiction of what went on in Daemon’s head that caused him to fall in love with Netty is for the show to depict it 😬

I hope that HOTD includes Nettles(it would be a hate crime not to) and fully fleshes out their relationship. To be honest, unless they plan on turning Daemon into a straight-up villain, they kinda have to include her at this point. He is supposed to be a morally gray character who is capable of having a decent relationship, but so far, the healthiest relationship he has is with Caraxes 🫠

Daemon is teetering on the very edge of being morally gray, and I know it’s a hot take with this fandom, but he needs a redemption arc with someone he hasn’t groomed, neglected, or abused🤷🏽‍♀️

Maester Norren's claims about how Daemon "doted" on Nettles to me just sounds like Daemon reminding Nettles to take care of herself especially the part about brushing her hair and dressing. On a shallow level it might look like that is what Daemon is doing but it could honestly be misinterpreted since they refuse to see Daemon actually being in love with Nettles because he's obviously married and because of his past. Nettles isn't incapable of taking care of herself, she's VERY capable but living when living on the streets your whole life vanity is at the bottom on the list of things to tale care of, once you have a decent clothes on your back enough to cover you and get you through then you're good so of course Nettles can be forgetful that she now has the resources to take better care of her looks other than bathing. ALSO it's interesting to note that one of Daemons gifts to Nettles is a silver looking glass to me that just proves that Daemon wants Nettles to remember to take care of herself AND on a more romantic side Daemon could've gifted it to her so she can see the beauty in herself that he sees in her and so she can find the beauty within herself, honestly these gifts are so well thought out that it's no wonder Nettles fell for him too because no one has figuratively amd literally observed her so well that they are able to pin point the things she may want and need JUST LIKE SHE DID WITH SHEEPSTEALER the only difference is Daemon isn't doing this for any other reason he's doing it because he loves her and wants to take care of her and he wants to provide for her and show her that he sees and knows her.

This a thousand times🙌🏽 When it comes to Fire & Blood because it is not written in a traditional format people are always saying look at the actions or look at what this character has had to deal with, but suddenly with Nettles, everyone is allergic to actually analyzing her story and journey.

They don't see her as an actual character in her own right. They see her as a tool. Which spills over to their interpretation of her relationship with Daemon.

All this fuss and the arguments being made harkens back to one side wanting to make Nettles into Daemon’s victim and the other into some baby bada** feral pet. I’ve said this before, but both don’t want her to be an actual character with her own wants and desires because then she’s a threat.

So they ignore how Nettles grew up to say she didn’t know how to take care of herself. Even though she was smart enough to claim a dragon that no one else could claim, knowing how soap and water work is way too advanced for her🙃.

Daemon looks after Nettles, making sure she has nice things, that she’s looking after her physical appearance and health, caring for her because he cares for her because he loves her, gets ignored.

All in favor of Nettles is mentally a toddler and Daemon is being a sexual predator again. Yeah, it is easy enough to jump to the second conclusion(the first conclusion has to be one of the dumbest borderline-racist arguments I have seen in this fandom), but look at Daemon’s actions.

If he is grooming Nettles why save her? Why go through all that trouble to dote upon her when in the end he’s not going to be there to enjoy the fruits of his labor?

When this is pointed out they go oh yeah but he brought her into this mess in the first. Ignoring the fact yet again that Daemon isn’t in the business of saving people just to save them. Look at who he is.

If he did not genuinely love Nettles, if he had not put her before his own wife, which yeah it can be construed as wrong, but these same people overlook incest, child murder, and racism to shout true love so adultry really isn’t the highest crime one can commit, he would have let those orders be carried out.

This is the same guy who murdered his young nephew. Who was fine with killing his dead wife’s uncle (on Rhaenyra’s orders in the book). He isn’t Mr. Nice Guy. He would have killed Nettles himself if he felt nothing for her.

And yeah has it ever occurred to them that Nettles herself could actually want Daemon? That she wants a romantic relationship with him just as much as he wants one with her.

This man who is kind to her, loving towards her, who cares and looks after her, who in many ways is just as unseen as she is, but he sees her. She’s never had that before. It's little wonder for the reasons above why she wouldn't love him, but they ignore all that.

She's old enough to fight in a war a pointless war, because I've seen very few complaints on how she's too young to be used by Team Black, but she's too young to be loved. You hate to see it.

Personal Headcannon:

On House of the Dragon we see both Laena and Rhaenyra hold Daemon's hand I think he's pretty used to his significant other/partner holding his hand especially when their at dinner. Nettles however doesn't hold his hand and at first when they are at Maidenpool and share their first meal together Daemon always looks down at their hands (which is very close but not touching) and he's tempted to hold Nettles hand but she never does, as the weeks go by however Nettles doesn't hold his hand but instead she hooks their pinkies together OR she fidget with his rings. Physical touch is something she craves but it's still all very new to her so it will take time to be more affectionate especially when they're not behind closed doors.

Nettles definitely isn’t used to affection, physical or otherwise. I mean probably the last time that someone was genuinely affectionate with her was when she was a baby.

Daemon on the other hand is a very physically affectionate person(In addition to the ones you mentioned let’s not forgot the belly kiss with Laena, head-butting Caraxes, placing his forehead on his brother’s shoulder).

He is not used to holding back physically from his partner or the ones he loves, but with Nettles, she’s more guarded. She’ll definitely clamp up at first if he tries to go all in especially in public. Daemon letting Nettles control the pace is what’s needed and things may go slow at first, but it’s worth the wait to them.

If you were to ever do a modern day AU for Daemon and Nettles what would it be like?

Oh, this is an interesting thought experiment. My first thought was that it would look like the TV show Scandal, but then I realized that Daemon is a prince and Westeros has a monarchy so that wouldn’t make a lot of sense (in my mind at least)🤣

Anyway, it would look sorta like The Crown(very loosely like The Crown). There would be no Dance so Rhaenyra has already been crowned queen and no one is trying to fight her accession to the throne. Daemon is her prince consort/husband/older cousin still with quite a reputation who the firm initially did not want Rhaenyra to marry. Ten years into their marriage it’s not looking so hot, but they are the ruling monarchs so they have to keep up appearances.

Nettles would be the new young intern to Daemon’s private secretary. When he’s first introduced to her he’s probably rude. He might feel some initial attraction, but she’d be completely turned off by him and his arrogance.

A couple of weeks or months later and they are at some charity event(maybe something for animals or children) where Nettles takes the place of Daemon’s secretary because some emergency happened. He wonders why she’s there and doesn’t think she’s up to the task yet, but she’s brilliant and she nails it.

If he’s not already attracted to her he definitely is now. He starts requesting her to be with him at these events (even if that’s against protocol) and he tries to charm her. Nettles is extremely weary of him and wonders why he’s being nicer to her. She can’t exactly be rude, but one day she does snap and goes off on him(he probably insults someone else and she rightfully calls him out for being a prick). He apologizes(sincerely) and the two form a “friendship.”

As the month's roll by Nettles herself starts to develop feelings for him, but try’s to suppress them. Daemon does not hide his attraction/feelings for her so he leaves the door open. She hesitates to take that final step until one cool night when they are touring the Riverlands (Maidenpool🏰 anyone). One thing leads to another and they consummate 🕯️their relationship. They are pretty much inseparable at this point.

Rhaenyra would be informed of their growing relationship by her private secretary. She dismisses it because of the arrangement she and Daemon have(he’s had affairs before). She just thinks that this is some fling that he’ll get tired of and out of his system soon enough, but then she sees the two in action and how they interact with each other. She gets freaked and starts to panic.

She confronts Daemon and tells him to drop Nettles. He threatens to completely move out of the palace and publically separate from her if he has to do that. So she relents and agrees to his terms. It’s fine and dandy until the press gets wind of the relationship📰

The firm goes into damage control and tells Daemon that he has to drop Nettles and say it was a mistake, that he’s sorry, yadda yadda. Naturally, at this point he’s actually in love so he holds firm, says he will not give her up, and asks for a divorce. As you can imagine all hell breaks loose🔥

And I'm like first of all they be calling Dettles this and that as if they don't be actively shipping UNCLE AND NIECE. Go read the sections of Fire & Blood where Rhaenyra goes on her racist tangent and then the part where Daemon reads her execution orders for Nettles if you don't believe me📖

They can’t read and cling to the fanon scenarios they’ve created in their head to prop up that sinking hellfire of a ship. They so desperately want Rhaenyra to be his light when she’s just not. Both in the show and the book(s).

In the book(s), his light patches are Nettles, Laena, and his girls. They’ve screwed over his relationship with Laena and their girls in the show so now it’s up to Nettles to show that the man is morally gray and they can’t stand that 🤷🏽‍♀️

The entire timeline of HOTD has been altered. Characters have both been aged and de-aged. Because of this in my mind it makes since that Nettles (who in Fire&Blood is 16/17) would be aged up as well. I believe following show canon Nettles and Aegon should roughly be around the same age. This would put Nettles in her early 20s. No one is trying to make Daemon (who took his niece to a whore house) seem less predatory. Especially when you take into account that in book!canon said niece is fourteen (underaged by Westeros standards and real world standards) and that he’s also teaching said niece sex acts. I would also like to remind you that by Westeros stands Nettles who is as young as 16 the first time she meets Daemon is an adult. Why so many people have a problem using basic common sense is beyond me.

Yep, she’ll inevitably be aged up(and yeah she’s technically an adult in the books). Honestly, at this point, it’s obvious can’t cope/won’t acknowledge that Nettles is a grown woman with agency because they are:

a. Dumbnyra stans who lost their minds when they read the book and found out Daemon abandons their self-insert Valyrian queen for someone like Nettles 🙃 so they cope by saying she’s a child/his biological or adopted child and ignore the fact that no father bathes with their daughter butt a**, especially at her big age.

b. Rancid(Rhaeicent) stans who are in love with a psychotic flop and won’t admit that she’s a psychotic flop so they cope by putting her heinous deeds on Daemon when she’s the one who tries to murder a woman she believes is pregnant in her sleep.

c. Daemon haters who while they acknowledge that he had a romantic relationship with Nettles, they want her to be a child so that they can say look how terrible he is(all while going on to stan other men who are just as questionable as him and other relationships with power imbalance issues😗). Honestly, I think some of these people while not Dumbnyra fans feel sorry for Rhaenyra and wanted Daemon to be her “male-wife”🤣

I'm over tiptoeing around this fandom’s hypocrisy when it comes to Nettles and her relationship with Daemon(which 8/10 times is due to biases) 🤷🏽‍♀️

How do you think nettles would feel or say when she hears how daemon treated Rhaena basically ignoring her then giving baela to rhaenys like a trade or how he slept with Rhaenyra after laena’s death then got married? Me personally I think she would make him realize that his actions have consequences and the life he wanted so bad was worth nothing in the end.

Yeah, she’d be really disturbed. If anything this makes her more weary about him. She already questions his motivation behind why he even likes her in the first place, but now she’s especially suspicious.

Nettles is going to question if he is with her because she's only a(young) dragon. She will wonder if he will or more like when he will grow bored with her and abandon her for greener pastures.

Daemon better pray to the Gods that she doesn’t find out about his misdeeds before they meet because if she has he’s going to have more of an uphill battle proving himself.

Honestly, this is where the show majorly messed up because book Daemon a. did love Laena and I’m pretty sure a large part of why he got married to Rhaenyra so quickly was because they took comfort in one another and she got pregnant so 🤷🏽‍♀️b. He would never send Baela off to Driftmark and b. While I do think Baela was his favorite kid/daughter it didn’t sound like Rhaena was treated like Cinderella for not having a dragon. He made sure that she at least had some dragon eggs🥚 whereas with the show I’m pretty sure Rhaena is just going to have to ask someone for them or take some for herself 🤦🏽‍♀️

They made Daemon more of a jerk than he is in the books because his one light spot outside of Nettles was Laena and their girls.

Rant aside, yes this would be an opportunity for Daemon to realize he’s majorly screwed up in the past. Since this is based on the show cannon, Nettles may even meet and converse with Rhaena(she probably met Baela in the books) so she can see the effects of neglect. She recognizes what it’s like to be neglected. She’s going to draw attention to that.

Nettles will tell him how she wishes that she had more time with her mother(cause I personally headcanon that she did try to raise her, but she died from some illness when she was young). How much she wishes that she knew who her father was. How she’d give next to anything to have them there with her.

Daemon can not go back in time and redo his mistakes, but he can be a better father in the present. He can be a present father. He’s the only parent they’ve got(and since Rhaenys is gone he’s the only parental figure they have) and they deserve more from him. That they want and need more from him(they are only 14-16?).

They are in the middle of a war and people are dying left and right so now is the time to hold on closer to what you have especially your children.

In a sort of AU type reality what do you think Nettles and Daemons relationship would look like after the war?

Oh let’s see. In this scenario, Team Black has actually won the war and Aegon II was overthrown so I imagine that Daemon would arrive back at four with Nettles as his unofficial mistress(officially she’s Baela or Rhaena’s lady companion).

I’d like to say he’d take her as his second wife, but that’s pretty much impossible given the fact that polygamous marriages are longer sanctioned and Rhaenyra’s reign would be on shaky ground so testing the Faith is a no-go.

He’s obviously worked out some deal with Rhaenyra where he publically supports as Prince Consort does his duties as protector of the realm, but his private life is his own.

Privately, Nettles is his wife in all but name. Come on, did you guys see how domestic they were at Maidenpool? That domesticity(sleeping in adjoining chambers, taking their meals together, council, the baths, etc.) continues in the capitol 🥰

I think Nettles at this point has gotten rid of most of her apprehensions about being his mistress, but the court can be daunting and extremely judgmental. For respectability’s sake, and to quell some of the gossip, Daemon might try to find a husband for her (if she wishes it).

Lol that marriage would never be consummated and Daemon would in fact have the groom wait outside of Nettles' rooms on their wedding night, that is if the man isn’t a friend of Dorothy😬

The only problem I can see interrupting this blissful pair would come in the form of Nettles falling pregnant(someone forgot to brew the moontea🫢)

Nettles is a little shock and apprehensive to tell Daemon, but shes so relieved to find out he’s happy about the baby.

Rhaenyra completely flips out and snaps (and Mysaria because she’s still around). She’s tolerated Nettles up until then, but the baby(especially after she lost her last one) makes her go full-blown evil queen.

Poison may find its way into Nettles' morning tea, but Daemon takes no precautions with her health and safety, especially when she’s in such a delicate state, so, of course, she has tasters for her. It doesn’t take long for Daemon to get to the bottom of the poisoning and figure out obviously it does not end well for Queenie and her mistress of whisperers🗡️

Daemon smokes cigarettes and cigars, and most likely does coke, but he’s down to get high with nettles.

Nettles doesn’t do hard drugs or cigarettes but probably vapes and smokes weed to calm her anxiety.

Oh, I can see that👍🏽Nettles’ gives off earth-mama vibes with a little stress so after a hard day she’ll smoke a blunt to take off the edge and Daemon does seem like he'd be a cokehead and would want to do a line off Nettles breast for the hell of it🤣

To add the the HC about the burned men and Nettles, her tomb is protected by Sheepstealer.

They took his skeleton and used it to conceal both the flame and Nettles. Over the years the flora and fauna had taken over the skeleton but you can still make out a dragons skull if you look close enough and inside rests Nettles (along side Daemon) and the eternal flame of Sheepstealer.

This is sweet🥹 Like this is exactly how Nettles would want to be buried(and Daemon cause if Nettles does not want to be burned he wants to be buried beside her). Being watched over by the dragon that led to her destiny🙌🏽
