Like programmed to seek out like, to find solace in similarity. It was a surprise, and a pleasant one at that, that the person in question happened to be someone he was familiar with, easier to bypass the stilted pleasantries of new interactions when those boundaries had been erased due to a familial connection. 

“I’m sorry,” he begins, a smile curving his mouth and something like mischief gleaming in his gaze beneath dimmed lighting. “I thought I had claimed the role of ‘pensive Warden in the corner’“. The comment is accompanied by a pointed look, and a terrible attempt at air quotes with one free hand, glossing over the fact that the new-money which ran in his veins was diluted in comparison to Remus. “Aren’t you supposed to be socialising?” Zach comments, a vague gesture given toward the people mingling around them, having assumed Remus would have been among them. What was it he had said? Give the press something positive to talk about.

The smoking area provided momentary respite from the stifling air in the Savoy, though Zach knew his own embarrassment had stained his cheeks blush pink. It was just easier to chalk it up to being one of a large number of people in the same room. He should have been more careful, the implicit expectation that he wouldn’t embarrass himself (or War, by association) something he had fallen short of the moment his champagne flute had slipped from his grasp. The drag taken of his vape is long, hoping that his lingering shame might be expelled in the subsequent plume of smoke. 

He turns his attention from the still-busy London streets to be met with the sight of his cousin striding toward the smoking area. Normally the vision would have prompted a stuttered excuse and less-than-graceful getaway, yet with Juno’s order, to ‘keep an eye on Saint’, it left him with little choice but to stay put. “Alright?” He asked through another shroud of smoke that enveloped him, a feeble barrier to the barb he anticipated would slice through his defences like a sharpened knife. Saint had always been smarter than him, something Zach had realised a number of years ago, though with Remus and Juno to contend with the Winchester could almost understand the reasons for it. 

“Enjoying dinner?” The question is innocent on the surface level, from someone else (namely one of his other cousins) there could have been ulterior motive to it. It was rare he had the forethought to intertwine the true meaning of what he wanted to ask in complicated alternatives, often opting for an awkward forthrightness in steed of hidden comments, so his words remained as intended; simple, to and the point.

The essence of shame was an indelible poison, lingering in the recesses of his mind until almost forgotten, choosing to reappear at the most inconvenient moments to inflict further suffering, leaving him exasperated at his own mind. Apt then that, when Victoria Pinkett appeared at the bar beside him, Zach was immediately thankful for the darkened lighting that wouldn’t draw focus to the blush that coloured his cheeks in that moment.

“Hey, uh,” he pushes his drink away from his immediate grasp, silently thankful that it stayed upright in the process, “I just wanted to say that i’m sorry... about earlier.” He was sure, almost certain, in fact, that he didn’t need to elaborate further on what he was apologetic for.  “If i can make it up to you, pay for the dry cleaning, or something, just let me know.” He knew that the offer was likely redundant, but was reluctant to succumb to the idea of someone thinking him ignorant and uncoordinated in the space of one evening.

He caught a glimpse of red out of the corner of his vision and didn’t need to think too long about who it was. Admittedly, it wasn’t quite the same shade of red his cheeks had flamed the first time they had met (when she had recognised him from a resume found in her desk drawer from his original pursuit of graduate jobs) but had you asked him at the time he would have said it was close. There were certain people, much like his own family, that seemed leagues beyond him in terms of social standing. Jessica Reyes happened to be one of those people.

The pair had struck up an acquaintanceship in the weeks, maybe months now, since she had followed him back on Instagram after their initial meeting; the occasional message back and forth or bumping into one another around the city. He excuses himself from present company, with assurances he would follow them shortly, making a diversion toward the Power in red. It was fortunate, he thinks, that he didn’t have to wait for someone else to finish a conversation with her before announcing himself. “I could’ve sworn I saw that dress on someone’s stories earlier...”

There is a smile that finds a home on his mouth, often the case when in the friendly warmth that Jessica seemed to radiate, extending his arms outward toward her. “You look beautiful.” It’s simple, it’s the truth. “Been having fun?”

It had soon come to his attention that he was not the only one invested in Saint’s comings and goings that night, having locked eyes with Carman not once, but at least three times now. He had a sinking feeling that she could read him like a book too - him noticing her, noticing him, noticing Saint - if he thought about it too much he’d get dizzy. Zach approaches her (perhaps foolishly) when an upbeat song reverberates from the speakers set out across the room, extending his hand. “Come on, Sadik, dance with me.” It could have been a demand, if not for the question that swam clearly in his gaze. He had learned from working with her that there was little hope in her doing anything she didn’t want to.

The incarnation of Carman he had known before having to work alongside her was different, but he had no problem reconciling the two in his mind’s eye. It was like a breath of fresh air being taken out of their usual competitive environment; a simple question escalating into a full-blown argument over scheduling conflicts wasn’t abnormal when it came to them. However he would be remiss if he didn’t acknowledge that working alongside her had prompted him - forced him - to be more organised, to avoid the shame of disappointing Juno just because Carman had booked the boardroom before he had even thought to. 

“You know you want to,” he teases, moving his shoulders in time with the beat of the music while his hand remains extended to her. “That dress looks to good not to show off.” Brows arch knowing that he made his point and knowing that it wasn’t wrong either, she looked incredible. He didn’t let himself look around, to see the full scope of the glamour that surrounded them, easier to feel inferior if he acknowledged he was surrounded by people who made it look easy.

In the interim between courses, he reaches out with a soft tap against Eden’s arm before gesturing toward the terrace in unspoken invitation. Fully aware that they did not approve of his vaping, or social smoking, habit, it was still the perfect escape from prying eyes and ears in the immediate vicinity. Zach half-expected that anything he could mention of note would be passed on to Juno, even casually, with Astrid sitting on one side of him.

“Are you cold? Do you want my jacket?” He asks when both of them emerge into the night’s cool embrace, not once considering the impact it could have on him. The pair had been in each other’s orbit long before the evening that Eden had offered a hug and words of encouragement after they had found him crying in a lesser-used stairwell, but something had clicked into place after that encounter solidifying the simple truth that he would do anything to protect his friend; even at his own expense.

He pulls the vape pen out of his jacket pocket, sliding it off his shoulders and extending it to them just in case. “Don’t look at me like that,” he chides though an exhale of vapour, his smile growing as the smoke clears and he is met with Eden’s blatant disapproval staring back at him. “But you have looked like you wanted to talk all evening, what’s up?”

He had been told to be normal. Normal people apologised and offered to clean up when spilling a drink on someone on accident, which he had. However, what they didn’t do was cause a scene when guided by a firm hand from the main room of the Savoy toward a lesser-used alley at the back of the hotel, so he kept quiet. The situation he had managed to land himself in was not in the slightest bit normal but, somehow, those kinds of events were becoming commonplace the longer he worked for his family. 

Zach had been poised to ask what was happening, or apologise, or something while turning to face his (former, he guessed now) drinking buddy. His words are taken from him before they can become fully formed thoughts, a swift punch to his abdomen leaving him breathless, sent backward into the wall behind him with the momentum. Fighting the immediate instinct to drop to his knees, he tries to focus on catching his breath instead. “What the fuck, man? What was that for?”

He’s surprised to see her here, not because Zacharias didn’t know that the other was affiliated with someone that wasn’t War, as the name written on the placard in front of her seat was different to the one she’d given him when they first met. There was, of course, a perfectly reasonable explanation. However, it was a matter of sifting through the numerous possibilities until he settled on the correct one.

It isn’t until there is a moment, a lull in between courses, when there is no on separating them that the Winchester decides to muse aloud. “Either you lied to me,” he begins, knowing that the other Angels could return any moment (having no intent on causing a scene), “Or you’re sitting in someone else’s seat.” Although not posed as a question, he glances toward her with a raised brow, partly expecting an answer regardless.
