I started rereading on of my favorite HTTYD fics from back when I was in the fandom, and while reading it's been fun, it's also just. Reminded me of how frustrating the HTTYD fandom was. And since I'm sick and thus my brain is foggy, what better time to rant about it?
Seriously, at one point the rampant Heather hate had me like. Analyzing fan reaction to female characters just to figure out wtf was going on. Like, the spinoff shows sucked in a lot of ways (RTTE especially), but I would argue that Heather was one of the good things that came from them. But no, according to the fandom, she's evil and/or a Mary Sue and/or [insert other criticism here].
Which ... can I just say, those attempts to analyze fan-behavior toward female characters made me very cynical towards most depictions of female characters in media. One of the conclusions I came to, iirc, was that media underrepresents female characters so often that in certain circumstances, an additional female character is seen as a threat to other female characters' screentime. It also made me accutely aware of how more often than not, a piece of media will only have two female characters, and those two female characters will be polar opposites, even if they're best friends. Animorphs did it with Rachel and Cassie, who are best friends despite having nothing in common. ASoIaF did it with Arya and Sansa. (I actually tried to explain to a friend of mine who was an ASoIaF fan why the relationship between Arya and Sansa annoyed me and kind of failed, and I think this is part of it - I have seen this "two completely opposite female character" trope so many times that it's gotten annoying af.) Harry Potter sort of did it, with the three most major female characters each having a kind of trope associated with them which would put them in different social circles: the bookworm/nerd (Hermione), the jock/cool kid (Ginny), the weirdo/outcast (Luna). Like, female characters just .... aren't allowed to be similar, They aren't allowed to be in the same social circles, or have the same interests. And that's weird as fuck.
I seem to recall some serious negativity toward Valka, too, because how dare she abandon her family - never mind that she was only twenty at the time, the same age Hiccup was when he's running off because he finds the possibility of being chief. And her husband was ten years older, iirc, which never seemed to come up as a "wait what" point in the discussion.
As I've gotten further away from the fandom, I've started liking the storyline of HTTYD2 less, and think Valka's role in it is kind of weird, but that's from the perspective of it in terms of storytelling/theme/etc. If we're operating from inside the story and looking at Valka's actions, while they aren't great, they're not horrible either. She was just as isolated as Hiccup was, possibly even moreso, and despite being a pacifist she got married to the best dragon-fighter in the entire village, who was ten years older than her. She had a baby before she was old enough to legally drink in modern America.
If we accept that Hiccup, at fifteen, felt so out of place that he wanted to run away, why don't we accept that when Valka was carried off, it was reasonable for her to assume she shouldn't go back? Just because she had a child? A child that had an older, arguably more responsible, more respected adult still available as his other parent? The impression that I had with Valka is that she stayed away because she literally thought that was best for everyone, including Hiccup. She'd finally found a place where she felt like she could be herself, and it wasn't in Berk. I don't fault her for that (nor would I fault Hiccup and Stoick if they were mad that she left, which they weren't).
You also had people being saying things like "when you're young, you sympathize with Hiccup, when you become an adult you sympathize more with Stoick." Which, um. No. I'm in my mid-thirties now, I just rewatched the first movie because the fic got me feeling nostalgic, and I still don't think Stoick was in the right. Sympathetic? Sure. But the dude crosses some serious lines, and for all he says Hiccup never listens, the worst non-listener in the entire franchise is him.
I mean, let's just take a moment to review, shall we? Your son, who last night was talking about how he's a born dragon-killer, comes home from who knows where and you tell him, "You get your wish. Dragon training. You start in the morning." Your son then tries to say that no, he doesn't want to fight dragons. He says he won't, he says he can't. Instead of thinking this is weird, you ... I guess assume he's joking? And you press on. Your son says stuff like "Can you not hear me?" and "this conversation is feeling very one-sided," but you press on. And all this when you know from the beginning of the conversation that there's something he wants to tell you.
Stoick also just. Flat out ignores warning signs when it comes to Hiccup, and more specifically how isolated Hiccup is in the village. He literally uses "looking after Hiccup" as a threat. When he gets back from a journey and everyone is telling him "everyone is so relieved" "the village is thinking about having a party to celebrate" etc., he's like, "wait, Hiccup's gone?" without making the connection that if that's people's reaction to Hiccup being gone, something is deeply fucked up.
Then, when Hiccup is in the ring with the Nightmare, it's Stoick banging on the bars of the arena which startles the Nightmare into attacking. He knows dragons are sensitive to noise, but in that moment he was too angry to care, and Hiccup nearly dies because of it. Afterwards he says Hiccup was the one who put everyone in danger, which is patently false. Hiccup didn't antagonize the Nightmare, and Hiccup didn't summon the Night Fury. Stoick antagonized Hookfang and Toothless came to the arena because he heard Hiccup scream. Toothless saved Hiccup's life.
During the discussion that follows, Stoick engages in some of the worst listening of the entire franchise. Hiccup is literally telling Stoick a ton of useful information, but Stoick only processes the information which allows him to find the nest. When Hiccup tries to tell him it's more dangerous than he knows, he ignores him, and when Hiccup grabs his arm and begs him, "for once in your life, would you just listen to me!" he literally pushes him away and disowns him.
So yeah, no. The older I get the more I see how Stoick failed in his responsibilities as a parent, even if I can see why it happened and can sympathize with him. Between Hiccup and Stoick, Stoick is the adult and the parent, and I expect him to act as such.
Don't get me wrong. I think the relationship between Hiccup and Stoick is one of the most compelling in the series. They illustrate the disconnect between them very well, and actually find a way to bring it to a satisfying conclusion. That said, that conclusion does not actually involve them meeting in the middle; it involves Stoick admitting he was wrong, and even getting a taste of what could have happened to Hiccup because of his actions.
There's also this like. Weird relationship the fandom had to the books, which. To be fair, the movies/show also had a weird relationship to the books. I read the books after seeing .... I think the first two movies? Definitely the first, at least. And while the books are cool in their own way, they very much are a different thing than the movies. The first movie is kind of a homage to the books more than an adaptation, and the second movie goes completely off the rails from anything remotely resembling the books. Yet, aspects of the books show up in the fanfic, and also in the early parts of the RoB show. The movie creators were determined to leave the movies where the books left off, even though they didn't start where the books started. (This btw was my first reason for not watching the third movie - the promotional materials making it look extremely silly only strengthened that conviction).
One of the things that I remember people complaining about was that they added Heather but not Camicazi, for example. And I just ... guys. Cami is already in the series. She's Astrid. The kick-ass girl with all the skills of a "proper" Viking, given a less anachronistic/appropriative name, and put in a context that worked with the movies only focusing on one Viking tribe. The differences Cami and Astrid have are because the differences in the books' Viking culture and the movies' Viking culture - the books put stuff like piracy and being sneaky among "proper" Viking skills, while the movies make "proper" Vikings more of the traditional straightforward warrior.
Like, if you're going to argue Cami and Astrid are different characters, I'm going to argue that book!Fishlegs and movie!Fishlegs are different characters. The movies do weird stuff moving certain aspects around and naming some things after book stuff which has nothing to do with the book counterpart. Book!Fishlegs and book!Hiccup merge together to create movie!Hiccup, movie!Fishlegs has literally nothing in common with book!Fishlegs besides his name, movie!Hookfang belongs to Snotlout instead of Stoick, movie!Toothless is a Night Fury instead of a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, the Green Death is now the Red Death, Alvin the Treacherous is basically completely different from book to show, etc. Like I said, the books and the movies have a very weird relationship.
aaaand I have run out of steam. TLDR version, HTTYD fandom is weird, or at least it was when I was in it.

Does anyone remember the game School of Dragons? That one How to Train Your Dragon rpg game that shut down in 2023??
Or Wild Skies? What about the How to Train Your Dragon DS game? Oh and the console game where you make the dragons fight each other??
Cause I played all of these (except Wild Skies cause I didn’t have a computer or anything) when I was younger… I’ve also been planning to get the Toothless / Night Fury build-a-bear recently, and have rewatch httyd like over 10 times at this point and that’s only counting me watching reaction videos, because I love data collection by seeing what other people think about my interests.
.. Yes I am autistic and yes from the last part I do also kin Donnie from rottmnt how did u know /hj

I just want to establish that my “alien redesigns” are never because I think the actual designs aren’t as good or anything! I know mine aren’t better they’re just different, I just want everyone to be animal people sometimes because I’m just like that. I don’t think my designs are an improvement or even practical in any way. It’s purely self-indulgent and based off me constantly daydreaming about Star Trek lol

Do you have any good recs for shows with disabled characters?
Good recs is relative because there are like none that aren’t bad™️ Sadly a lot of shows either dramatize or play down disability and mental illness in tv given a highly unrealistic or dehumanizing vibe. Or they do that but w inspiration porn. Especially live action ones. Literally no middle ground 😭 honestly it’s so sad but the best shows for disabilities off the top of my head have been :
Leverage (Parker, Nate)
RWBY (Yang, Mercury, Neo, Oz, Cinder, Qrow, Maria, Ironwood, Nora? Ect)-gen while the general quality of rwby wavers it’s one of the few shows I know w a strong physically disabled lineup
Adventure Time (Finn, Simon)
Teen Titans/YJ (yes I know they’re diff continuity’s) TT-(Vic, Raven, Robin), YJ (Roy, misc other characters I have not kept up)
Star Trek -specifically I’m citing the original series and tng but I’m sure there’s more (Spock, Data, Geordi)
I’ve heard mixed reviews on the httyd cartoons? Never watched them but I know hiccup is like. An amputee. King
Atla/Lok -Korra my love
She Ra? Entrapta I’ve gotten uh. Mixed reviews of from my Autistic friends but she’s definitely there-along w Hordak 😔 but so is Catra so? Fair trade
My mom watched Raising Dion and really loved it!!
My mom also recommended Speechless I have not seen it.
Oh Special on Netflix 💕
Also if you’re up for a doc crimp camp was good
*if anyone has any to add pls feel to in the comments

Cyborg Toothless AU
Guess who came up with a futuristic AU based on an obscure novella series most people have probably never heard of? Me! If you have heard of Martha Wells ‘Murderbot Diaries’ series, high five, and if you haven’t, I recommend it if you like sci-fi, a deadpan snarker non-human protagonist and thinly veiled digs at capitalism. Like it’s not even thinly veiled, the villains are capitalists.
So the premise of Wells’ series is that a SecUnit - basically a sentient cyborg designed and programmed to kick the absolute crap out of things threatening their client, as well as gather information on said client to use in data mining - hacked its governor module and went rogue, nicknaming itself ‘Murderbot’.
(Despite this it just wants to be left alone to watch serials, but humans keep doing stupid human things and it has to stop them getting themselves killed.)
Anyway, I haven’t figured out the details but the basic idea of this au is that Toothless is a SecUnit under the control of the Reddeth Corporation (ha ha aren’t I subtle) until it crash lands or gets shot down and discovered by this AUs version of Hiccup. Despite being told that SecUnits are dangerous, he takes pity on the stranded cyborg and hacks its governor module, freeing it.
In gratitude, the SecUnit allows Hiccup to assign him a male gender and name him ‘Toothless’ after his serial number, T001355 (just roll with it). He decides that Hiccup is now his sole client/first real friend and he will protect this small nerdy human from any and all threats. Ironically those threats wouldn’t be an issue if they hadn’t met but the same could be said for the original HTTYD.
As you can see I haven’t put a lot of thought into this, it’s basically, “Toothless is super protective of Hiccup but instead of a dragon he’s a highly specialised, ultra-intelligent humanoid cyborg who can and will choke out anyone who so much as looks at his best friend wrong.” So instead of a modern au where the dragons are pets it’s a futuristic au where the dragons are robots! Hooray?
You know just for the hell of it the cyborg dragons (Cygons?) can have the ability to shift from humanoid to dragon form at will, like Transformers.

Cartoon asks: ALL OF THEM
THANK YOU SO MUCH OMFG
also i totally didnt fill all these out in advance and twiddle my thumbs in anticipation, hoping someone would send me this ask, nope not at all
1. A cartoon you remember that nobody else does.Back at the Barnyard.  That fucking show…oh my god
2. A cartoon you like but nobody else seems to.Well technically I remember liking Back at the Barnyard but I haven’t watched that show since I was like 8 or 9 so idk if I’d like it now akjsfkfkgjh I kinda doubt it now because my bullshit-tolerance-meter for television has significantly shortened.  Uhhh the only other cartoons I can think of that I liked that don’t seem to be liked by a lot of people are like…the DreamWorks cartoons (when they were on Nickelodeon and CN that is, I don’t have Netflix rip) and the Lego cartoons (except Ninjago because apparently that has a fandom?? what??) like I thought they were okay at the time at least.  (Also I guess the HTTYD cartoon wasnt hated, because it was fucking HTTYD, but //shrug)
3. A cartoon you don’t like but everybody else seems to. ADVENTURE TIME and like everything on Cartoon Network except Steven Universe and We Bare Bears honestly.  Like Adventure Time isn’t my cup of tea but I’m like “alright, some of those plots actually seem kind of interesting, I guess I can see where people are coming from” but like… shit like Clarence and Uncle Grandpa??  I’m all for people having different opinions but I don’t know how you can even get past the art style, let alone the writing style and some of the voice acting ;-; you are a stronger person than I’ll ever be if you can get past that lmao
4. A cartoon you wish would be forgotten.Uhhh pretty much everything on Nickelodeon from 2010-2014 (besides the dreamworks cartoons basically) and the shit reboots that CN’s been pumping out (namely TTG and the PPG reboot, but the Ben 10 reboot looks REALLY lazy, so at least it doesn’t annoy me [or I haven’t seen anything from it that annoys me] but…)
5. The worst cartoon you’ve ever seen, and why?Fanboy and Chum Chum, as far as cartoons I’ve actually watched go (because hoo boy, worse cartoons exist out there).  Everything about that cartoon is…wrong and broken.  It has one style of humor and that’s toilet/gross out humor.  The “straight man” so to speak, basically an emo teen version of Squidward, is actually…not Squidward in-show??  Like in the intro he’s very clearly set out to be a grouch who hates the main characters, but in the show he’s just…an introvert that gets wrapped into their plans and only snaps at them when they actually hurt him.  The protagonists are annoying as fuck and are psychopaths that deserve to be locked up in a mental institution.  It’s not funny.  The voice acting is annoying as hell.  And the animation is disgusting.  I didn’t know it was even possible to make 3d animation look this rendered yet still look so bad, but apparently it is.  Like they took extra effort into making the show look WORSE.  I will say that its impressive that they managed to get such tooney designs to exist in a 3d space, but that doesn’t do you shit good when the animation is gross.
6. The worst moment you’ve ever seen happen in a cartoon.Directly, as in I was watching the show?  Something in Fanboy and Chum Chum.  Indirectly, as in I watched a review where they showed the scene or I read about it?  Something in Family Guy, or the self-insert in the PPG reboot.  Yeah there’s a self-insert in the PPG reboot.  Every time I think it cant get worse…it does.
7. The worst thing you’ve ever seen happen to a cartoon that ruined it.I was really neutral on Teen Titans Go (some of the jokes made me laugh but others were really cringey, but it was at least funny some of the time and the art didn’t hurt me as much as other shows on CN, so whatever) but then I found out that they’ve actively attacked their critics in-show and have generally responded very poorly to criticism and…asdf.  Like its one thing to stay quiet, it’s another thing to embrace it and say “yeah we know its stupid, but it made us laugh!” (which they did do, kinda), but it’s another thing to spit in the face of everyone who has a problem with it (and not even address their criticisms, like they act like they did but?? no they fucking didn’t??).  Like the problem I have with the show is not that it’s stupid.  The problem is that the writers say “yeah, it’s for kids, so it should be stupid” (its not even “well it made us laugh” from what I remember), the problem is that the writers never watched the original show and completely ruined the legacy of a show that actually took itself seriously, the problem is that the writers are so fucking high on their horses that they respond to the haters IN-SHOW and LAUGH AT THEM.  My problem is not with the show itself, my problem is with the culture it embodies.  It embodies the worst of Hollywood entitlement, cheap shithole cashcow shows, cheap reboots that disappoint fans of the original, “stupid because its for kids” cartoons, and basically the worst Hollywood has to offer.
8. A cancelled/forgotten cartoon you would bring back to television.Uhh if nothing happens with Infinity Train then that, but besides that…another series of Avatar (like following a new avatar) would be fucking great but I don’t want to put the creators through the hell that is Nickelodeon lmao.  I also thought Harvey Beaks looked nice, like I never watched it but it looked okay, so I’d be okay with bringing that back too if it made the creator happier (honestly the poor creator…nickelodeon treated him really badly too)
9. An animated character you remember but nobody else seems to.Pete from Steven Universe lmao like where did he goJoking aside (SU is too relevant to count for this) uhHHH fuck I guess the characters in the Monsters vs Aliens cartoon? nobody remembers that movie but the show kinda cemented the characters in my mind (I would’ve said back at the barnyard but honestly I don’t remember the characters until you show them to me, besides like the main cow guy, whoops)
10. An animated character you hate the most, and why?Onion annoys me.  Like…he’s that kind of character that has no rhyme or reason behind what he does.  He’s the kind of character whose entire personality just relies on the kind of Adventure Time-esque humor that I just don’t get or enjoy.  The kind of humor that just creeps or grosses me out or bores me instead of making me burst out laughing.  The kind of humor that’s physical-based, but just too slow and poorly paced to be funny like slapstick.  I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s exactly how Onion seems to me and that’s why I dislike Onion.  In Doug Out, for example, Onion has no gross out or creep out jokes, and I don’t mind him as much.  Like he’s not a GOOD character, he still doesn’t bother insisting that there’s something else out there when the others disagree with him, but at least he isn’t scaring me.  OH AND MARCUS FROM DIGIMON DATA SQUAD I immediately thought Onion because he’s a cartoon character, but since this is just for animation in general…aksdhfgfkj i dont know why I hate Marcus so much, I dont want to hate Marcus so much, but I do.  His response to everything is just to punch everything and he’s so entitled and annoying and hotheaded and aAAARG HES JUST INFURIATING, I DIDNT THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE TO BE THIS MAD OVER A CHARACTER THAT ISNT FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN BUT HERE I AM
11. A non-animated property you would like to see as a cartoonidk if this counts because it’d have to be an anime probably but FOSSIL FIGHTERS CHAMPIONS!!! LITERALLY I WOULD CRY IF THIS WAS MADE INTO A MANGA OR ANIME PLEASE @ NINTENDO MY FAMILY IS STARVING but seriously can you imagine like….you could have a mute main character (its implied that the protagonist talks a few times but they could be selectively mute or just mime and the dialogue could be rearranged appropriately) and if you choose the female protagonist you could make her gay for Pauleen??? Like I refuse to accept the male protagonist as the “canon” main character bc I want gay sorry.  BUT LIKE!!!  You wouldn’t have to write that much bc its already written!! and its really fucking ridiculous and would probably appeal to like…TTG-loving kids because its so silly asdf BUT ITS ALSO GOOD, IT HAS HEART, PLEASE THIS IS SUCH A GOOD IDEA like its not a good idea for manga/anime because it IS kinda ridiculous and childish but?? it would fit so well as a western cartoon???  Hey Nintendo can you please give me a license to produce this because I swear to god I would if I could
12. A trope or trend in animation that you dislike.Well there are a lot but they aren’t exclusive to animation…?  "Blonde popular bitch" and “damsel in distress” have been two of my personal most-hated for all my life because of who I am/was, but there are others I dislike too.  I also really hate the kinda…style that Adventure Time set up in cartoons.  Like I guess AT isn’t really responsible for ugly-looking cartoons and the type of humor that I dislike, because looking at CN before it aired there were already shows like that (Chowder, Flapjack…) but I think AT really popularized them and :/ it also reworked the same concepts in Chowder and Flapjack and people were like “WOWEE CARTOON RENAISSANCE !!!” and I just kinda….idk.  I have a lot of personal baggage against AT lmao sorry AT fans, like I don’t even hate the show and not all of its effects were bad (not in the slightest) but like TTG I have issues with some of the things it popularized.
13. A currently airing cartoon that you know is going to be forgotten about in the future.Hmm, We Bare Bears maybe, or like Mighty Magiswords.  Like CN plasters Mighty Magiswords everywhere but nobody gives a shit about that show so I feel like its only a matter of time before it disappears yknow?? but maybe im wrong.  WBB doesn’t get the attention it deserves so yeah.  Also maybe that Bunsun is a Beast cartoon over on Nickelodeon? im not sure man
14. The best episode of a cartoon you really like. The Southern Raiders (that’s only one of my favorites tho, like?? The Puppetmaster is tied for first in that season, and that’s just in that season, not including the other two seasons of ATLA)
15. The worst episode of a cartoon you really like.Rocknaldo or any episode centering around Onion, e u c k
16. A cartoon you feel deserves more recognition than it gets.Uhhhhh fuck everything I watch is mainstream cries WBB isn’t that popular and like its a cute, perfectly fine show, but its not like…revolutionary
17. A cartoon you feel deserves less recognition than what it gets.ADVENTURE TIME, also s/o to Regular Show, Clarence, Uncle Grandpa…like those last two aren’t even universally liked but sorry I still think they get too much praise asdf
18. The worst idea you can think of for an animated series. It already exists and its called One Ounce Mouse, but honestly adult cartoons in general are…a bad idea.  Like if you’re just gonna use your adult rating to offend people instead of using it to be insightful or using it to be ACTUALLY FUNNY, what the fuck are you doing with your life?  You should be fired tbqh
19. At what point did you realize a cartoon, any cartoon was starting to get bad?I can’t remember when I realized SpongeBob was starting to get bad, but it was sometime around 2010 or so.  I remember getting really sick of the show when it went to HD/fullscreen because for some reason, all the new character designs got…significantly worse??  Like the season premiere of that season (cant remember which season it was, don’t care to look it up) had three new characters and they all looked…so fucking ugly?  It was really hard to look at?  Like seriously they looked like something out of Sanjay and Craig, not SpongeBob.  Even the main character designs just…looked too smooth and rounded and not good to me.  It reminds me of like Family Guy and i dont like that overly smooth, “we have too much money so we blew it on extra in-between frames instead of good-looking art” style.  I think the final breaking point for me was Squid Baby and the episode where Gary got overly attached to a ball, and realizing that after an episode that actually was kinda legitimately nice (it was the one about Plankton getting a pet) they were never going to bring up Plankton’s pet again and ugh.  Like lack of continuity is nothing new but I really wish he had kept the pet, it was the best thing to happen to the show in literal years.  Like seriously that episode was the best new episode in years, it was legitimately cute even though I had a beef with some of the character designs (as I always did in that season)
20. An experience with a cartoon you thought you were going to like but turned you away from it.I tried watching Bee and Puppycat the other day and it really….put me off….because it had more of that Adventure Time style humor and I legitimately thought it interfered with how the plot should’ve progressed.  Like Bee was way too okay with everything and we didn’t get any explanation for anything because instead she just made weird noises and bit a monster’s tongue off.  I’m still gonna watch the other episodes for the heck of it, so maybe I’ll change my mind, but eh
21. Something you would like to see more than anything in a cartoon. It already exists and it’s called Avatar: The Last Airbender + The Legend of Korra
22. What do you feel makes a cartoon forgettable? That’s….actually a really good question.  Because like, I would’ve forgotten about Adventure Time years ago if it hadn’t been drilled into my head that everyone else thought it was the best thing ever and I didn’t.  I might be off my SU high by now if I didn’t keep reblogging/reading SU-related stuff on tumblr lol.  I guess blandness is what makes your cartoon forgettable.  If its not so bad that it’s funny/everyone needs to insult it, but its not good enough that it gets good reviews, then there’s just…no place for your cartoon, especially if its not profitable so it gets cancelled quickly.

I was tagged by @aelwen! Thank you lovely~
Rules: Answer all questions, add one question of your own and tag as many people as there are questions.
Coke or Pepsi: Pepsi Max.
Disney or Dreamworks: Dreamworks. The Prince of Egypt, Spirit, HTTYD and Kung Fu Panda made up far more of my formative years than any Disney film.
Coffee or tea: Tea, though I don’t mind a coffee now and then.
Books or movies: Leaving Chloe’s answer here because it was perfect. “Both! I love diving into a great book or series, but I also love watching a story unfold and see the little things. So.. yeah. Both.“
Windows or Mac: Windows.
DC or Marvel: Eh, Marvel I guess. It’s much more colourful (which is ironic given that the colour grading of the MCU films is atrocious).
Xbox or PlayStation: Historically, Xbox. But I think this gen will be the gen I switch to Playstation. Indie support, less DRM, and better exclusive titles = Anna’s interest.
Dragon Age or Mass Effect: Mass Effect. Dragon Age was wonderful, and I love it with all my heart. But Mass Effect, in the long run, meant more to me. Shepard is the queen of my heart.
Night owl or early riser: I’m a night owl thanks to my mental health issues. But I love getting up early, having breakfast, looking after myself, and getting ready for the day.
Cards or chess: Chess fascinates me, but I prefer the aesthetic of cards.
Chocolate or vanilla: Vanilla (you can add anything to it >:D)
Vans or Converse: I have never worn either.
Lavellan, Trevelyan, Cadash, or Adaar: I haven’t played DA:I.
Fluff or angst: Both have their place. There must be balance.
Beach or forest: I would love to one day live by a beach. Wake up every day smelling the ocean. Go for walks along the shore whenever I wanted to.
Dogs or Cats: Cats.
Clear Skies or Rain: Rain. Waking up to rain with no obligations is the greatest feeling in the world for me.
Cooking or eating out: Cooking is a special treat for me, because we can rarely afford ingredients. I love cooking for people.
Spicy food or mild food: Mild food. I really want to be good at eating spicy stuff, I really do! But I’m so, so bad.
Halloween/Samhain or Solstice/Yule/Christmas: Australians don’t celebrate the former, and I have no real memories of the latter, as my family never celebrated it either. But I would like, one day, to be able to say Christmas.
Would you rather forever be a little too cold or a little too hot (and no the winter coats and ACs are not an option): Forever a little too cold. No question. I hate being hot. I hate it.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be: I like the power to restore people to perfect health, both in body and mind.
Animation or Live action: Animation.
Paragon or renegade: Paragon in theory, but I’m not really a fan of binary morality systems.
Trains or planes: Trains.
LoL, Dota , Smite, or Heroes of the Storm: Take your MOBAs and get the fuck out of my house.
Star Wars or Star Trek: I’ve only ever *properly* been exposed to Star Wars, and thus I don’t have enough data to answer this.
One episode per week or binge watching: Binge watching.
Heroes or Villains: Heroes.
Notebook or on PC typing: Typing. My handwriting is messy and slow.
The X-Files or Supernatural: I have only seen Supernatural and so cannot answer this.
Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter: Honestly, I don’t really care.
Fallout 3 or New Vegas: FNV.
Tagged: Uh idk, I’ll just throw a few names out there, but there’s no pressure to do it, ok? @cookiekitcat, @robotslenderman, @bandanagambit, @phantasmalfawn, @secularbakedgoods. Anyone else who wants to steal this is welcome to.

So this is the first season of the HTYD spinoff TV show where I’ve been smart and stayed away from HTTYD blogs and their intense hatred of Heather. That means it’s the first time I’ve actually been able to react to the season and not just reacting to the fandom.
First off, TV!Hiccup is not only a Creator’s Pet, he’s also a really bad adaptation of Hiccup’s character. Secondly, because of that, the villain for this season sucks, and thirdly, because the villain sucks, I’m kind of bored with the series’ main plot.
So even with the other TV show spinoffs, I could see that they were simplifying Hiccup’s character. Hiccup in the first movie was weak and could barely life a shield; by the time the TV show starts, which is supposed to be pretty much immediately after, he’s able to use a shield to shove much larger enemies out of his way. Hiccup was only ever wrong in that series if the person disagreeing with him was Toothless; otherwise, everyone else was always wrong, and he was always right. The adults having dragons from the end of the movie and the Gift of the Night Fury special was taken away so Hiccup and his friends were the only ones with their own dragons and thus the only ones capable of properly defending Berk, which made Hiccup basically the commander in chief of Berk’s five-dragon-large army, which was very much not his role in the movies.
Basically, they made him a Mary Sue, or as I call it, a Creator’s Pet. Is it realistic for Hiccup to be able to fight someone several times his size? No, but let’s have him do it, because it looks cool. Would parents be okay with their teenaged kids fighting an enemy that the adults all think is a huge threat? No, but let’s do it anyway to make Hiccup more important.
Race to the Edge continued the oh-so-time-honored tradition of having Hiccup be better than everyone around him, but it gets to the point where it becomes really obvious that the character on the screen isn’t just an idealized Creator’s Pet, but also not really Hiccup.
Movie!Hiccup, while intelligent, does not win through intelligence. It’s an important part of who he is, but his intelligence is by no means his defining trait. In his fight against the Red Death, his plan works better than his father’s did, but only because he has more information than his father did. He knows how to ride dragons; his father doesn’t. He knows that dragons aren’t fireproof on the inside; his father doesn’t. He knows that the Red Death exists and is the biggest threat in the nest; his father doesn’t. This isn’t because he studied the dragon manual more or just had more natural intelligence, but because he took the time to understand dragons and learn more about them. That’s compassion and empathy, not intelligence.
Movie!Hiccup displays this again in HTTYD2. He doesn’t outsmart Drago at all. He doesn’t even try to outsmart Drago. What he wants to do is persuade Drago, to “change his mind.” “This is what I’m good at,” he tells his father. “If I can change your mind, I can change his.” Even after persuasion fails, it’s still through his compassion and empathy that he’s able to defeat Drago, because his bond withj Toothless was strong enough to break the Bewilderbeast’s control and create a new alpha to challenge the Bewilderbeast.
Hiccup’s smart - but the most important part of who he is is his compassion, his empathy. Not so in the TV show. In the TV show, Hiccup is the smartest one in the room, and that’s why he’s the leader, that’s why he calls the shots. Not because he’s compassionate, but because he’s right.
In the first iteration of the TV show - Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk - this wasn’t as glaring as it is in Race to the Edge. See, the villains Riders and Defenders weren’t supposed to be reflections of Hiccup on any level. Alvin was kind of a generic villain who wanted to conquer dragons to use them against Berk, and Dagur, while a chief’s son like Hiccup, had no other qualities that he shared with Hiccup and, again, wanted dragons of his own for his own evil purposes.
With Race to the Edge, though, you have a villain that is obviously supposed to be a match specifically for Hiccup. It’s like they saw the similarities between Hiccup and Drago in HTTYD2 and tried to emulate that style of villain-hero dynamic, only to fail because they don’t understand Hiccup’s character.
See, Drago is a dark reflection of Hiccup in a lot of ways. Hiccup lost his leg to dragons; Drago lost his arm. Hiccup uses the arm Drago doesn’t have to reach out and train dragons; Drago uses the foot Hiccup doesn’t have to subjugate dragons, literally stomping them under his foot. Hiccup runs from leadership; Drago wants to rule the world. The development od Drago was rushed, the creator’s have admitted that, but they obviously wanted to create the parallel between hero and villain, both Dragon Masters, but in very different ways.
In Race to the Edge, they created Viggo Grimborn as their villain to oppose Hiccup. What’s Viggo’s primary quality, you may wonder? If you’ve read this far you probably can guess: it’s his intelligence. Viggo is extremely intelligent, a habitual liar, extremely skilled at deception and getting people to do exactly what he wants. For TV!Hiccup, he might be a good foil, but this is where the divide between TV!Hiccup and Movie!Hiccup gets really obvious: Viggo would be a horrible foil for Movie!Hiccup.
As TV!Hiccup states, Viggo’s a game player. The problem is, Movie!Hiccup would just refuse to play. Drago and Eret both tried to frame the situation in HTTYD2 as a kind of game that Hiccup had no chance of winning.
ERET: “What game are you playing?”
HICCUP: “No game, we just want to meet Drago.”
ERET: “Why?”
Hiccup: “Because I’m going to change his mind about dragons.”
ERET & CREW: *laugh*
With Drago, he treats Hiccup like a challenger to his authority. “I alone control the dragons!” he growls. When he meets Hiccup, he laughs. “This is the great Dragon Master? The son of Stoick the Vast? What shame he must feel.”
Drago is trying to make Hiccup defend his own title as Dragon Master, to match his belief that Hiccup is challenging him. But Hiccup doesn’t play. He immediately tries to persuade Drago, not challenge him. Hiccup doesn’t let Drago set the tone, and in fact starts getting at the heart of why Drago is doing what he’s doing. We get insight into Drago because Hiccup gets Drago to talk. It doesn’t help in the short term, but it’s a big reason why the end of HTTYD2 was satisfying to me. HTTYD2 is about Hiccup’s ideals clashing with Drago’s, and we see the two at war in the final fight. Drago’s abuse of the Bewilderbeast is not as strong as Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless, and that loses a ton of meaning if it just becomes “Hiccup kicked a larger enemy’s ass.”
With Viggo, though, TV!Hiccup tries to play the game. He tries to predict Viggo’s moves and figure out ways of countering them. The thing with Viggo isn’t a clash of ideals or philosophies, it’s two chess players who are used to playing against vastly inferior players and are now facing their match for the first time.
If that sounds interesting, believe me, it’s far more boring than you’d expect. Hiccup can’t lose in any huge way (we thought he did at the end of season two, but losing the dragon eye has affected basically nothing this season, and then this season he lost all of Berk’s gold and Gobber just wrote it off as “don’t worry, I’ll take the heat for it, you just focus on getting it back,”) but Viggo can’t lose because they’re trying to make him into a big unstoppable villain. It’s unstoppable force meets immovable object and it gets really boring to watch, because nothing ever seems to change in any significant way. Hiccup is losing for the first time in the TV show, but he still isn’t facing any consequences from losing, and he’s still the one who’s “right.” And the thing is, the people around him often have to hold the idiot ball to make him the one who’s right - take a woman in “Defenders of the Wing, part one” who keeps thinking despite a lot of evidence to the contrary that they’re Viggo’s goons. Is there a reason for this? Not really, any evidence she has is circumstantial and she doesn’t let Hiccup properly defend himself, and by wasting time with it she and Hiccup end up playing right into Viggo’s hands.
Then you have the fact that this whole game of wits thing seems suspiciously like Game of Thrones. You have the honorable Hiccup Stark vs the devious Viggo Lannister and it’s annoying as fuck. It’s not HTTD, not the movies, not the books. The whole idea of a “game” between the hero and the villain is just totally divorced from anything the movies or books have done. The game of thrones was the least interesting part of A Song of Ice and Fire and the TV show’s insistence on making it more significant than it was in the books is part of the problem with GOT as far as I’m concerned. Inject that kind of “the good guy always loses, the bad guy always wins” mentality into HTTD and it just feels incredibly off, but that’s the vibe you can tell they’re trying to go for. I don’t watch HTTYD stuff for “teh dark and edgy~!”, I watch it because I like Hiccup and Toothless, and right now this show is doing a really bad job at portraying the former.
