Habitat restoration work like this isn’t just good for the birds. There’s now a steady supply of freshwater to Kanjonde from the stream that flows out of the forest.

“By protecting the forest we are protecting the river so it can provide healthy water,” says Regina Wimbo, one of the 12 nursery workers who waters and tends to the seedlings and helps carry them across the hillside on planting days.

Wimbo was born and raised in Kanjonde. She says she’s happy to see her work in the nursery now bearing fruit.

“Six years ago we had lower water flow; now we have much more water flowing down,” she says, indicating the stream of crystal-clear water rushing past. There are plans to put in a small weir, and to pipe water directly to the village.

Some residents of Kanjonde are themselves learning how to gather data to measure rates of recovery and keep tabs on potential threats. Like the nursery workers, they’re employed on a part-time basis by the project and its sponsors, and have been trained to survey biodiversity and human environmental impacts at various sites around the village. Popular Drug Does Not Alleviate Mild Covid-19 Symptoms, Study Finds Ivermectin, a controversial anti-parasitic drug that has been touted as a potential Covid-19 treatment, does not speed recovery in people with mild cases of the disease, according to a randomized controlled trial published on Thursday in the journal JAMA. Ivermectin is typically used to treat parasitic worms in both people and animals, but scientific evidence for its efficacy against the coronavirus is thin. Some studies have indicated that the drug can prevent several different viruses from replicating in cells. And last year, researchers in Australia found that high doses of ivermectin suppressed SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, in cell cultures. Such findings had spurred use of the drug against Covid-19, especially in Latin America. “Ivermectin is currently being used widely,” said Dr. Eduardo López-Medina, a doctor and researcher at the Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases in Cali, Colombia, who led the new trial. “In many countries in the Americas and other parts of the world, it’s part of the national guidelines of treating Covid.” But the drug has also proved divisive. While some scientists see potential, others suspect that effectively inhibiting the coronavirus may require extremely high, potentially unsafe doses. Health officials have also worried that people desperate for coronavirus treatments might take versions of the drug that have been formulated for pets. (It is commonly used to prevent heartworm in dogs.) “There’s been a lot of conflicting views on this, sometimes extreme conflicting views,” said Dr. Carlos Chaccour, a researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health who was not involved in the new study. “I think it has become another hydroxychloroquine.” But neither the proponents nor the critics have had much rigorous data to support their views. The new trial adds much-needed clinical data to the debate over using the drug to treat Covid-19, said Dr. Regina Rabinovich, a global health researcher at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, who was not involved in the study. But she noted that the trial was relatively small and did not answer the most pressing clinical question, whether ivermectin can prevent severe disease or death. “Duration of symptoms may not be the most important either clinical or public health parameter to look at,” she said. MANILA – Bargain hunting resulted in the recovery of the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) Friday but the peso ended the day sideways against the greenback.

The main equities gauge rose by 1.12 percent or 76.77 points, to 6,926.41 points.

All the other indexes followed, with All Shares up by 0.68 percent, or 28.52 points, to 4,199.00 points.

Holding Firms led the sectoral gauges after it rose by 2.40 percent and was trailed by Mining and Oil, 1.98 percent; Financials, 0.66 percent; Services, 0.16 percent; Industrial, 0.10 percent; and Property, 0.05 percent.

Volume totaled 16.37 billion shares amounting to PHP9.56 billion.

Decliners led advancers at 116 to 98 while 41 shares were unchanged.

“Investors returned to the Philippines for bargain hunting after successive sell-offs after recent economic data showed only a slightly better labor market amid increasing bond yields,” Luis Limlingan, Regina Capital Development Corporation head of sales, said,

Survey – Canadian home prices see healthy gains in the fourth quarter

TORONTO, Jan. 11, 2019 /CNW/ – According to the Royal LePage House Price Survey1 released today, year-over-year home prices made healthy gains in many regions across Canada in the fourth quarter of 2018, continuing the recovery from the most significant housing correction since the financial crisis. Once again, the Greater Montreal Area saw the highest year-over-year home price appreciation rate of the three largest Canadian metropolitan areas studied.

The Royal LePage National House Price Composite2, compiled from proprietary property data in 63 of the nation's largest real estate markets, showed that the price of a home in Canada increased 4.0 per cent year-over-year to $631,223 in the fourth quarter of 2018. When broken out by housing type, the median price of a two-storey home rose 3.9 per cent year-over-year to $745,007, while the median price of a bungalow climbed 1.5 per cent to $516,950. Condominiums continued to see the highest rate of appreciation nationally when compared to the detached segment, rising 7.2 per cent year-over-year to $447,915.

Royal LePage projected modest home price appreciation in 2019 in its recent forecast, expecting the aggregate price of a home in Canada to rise 1.2 per cent in Canada over the next year.

“The invisible hand that guides our complex economy hit the real estate reset button in 2018 and that is a good thing,” said Phil Soper, president and CEO, Royal LePage. “Major market home price inflation through much of the decade had led to dangerous overheating in our most populous regions. Government regulatory intervention and rising interest rates, when combined with property price overshooting, triggered the correctional cycle we find ourselves working through today.”

On January 9th, the Bank of Canada decided to maintain its target for the overnight rate and reduced its forecast for annual GDP growth from 2.1 per cent to 1.7 per cent.

“While some economists are adjusting their forecast for the economy as a whole, Canada's real estate market is beginning to emerge from the correction that began a year ago. The national real estate market is stable and should see modest price gains by the end of the 2019,” said Soper.

The Canadian economy is performing well overall, with pockets of uncertainty. Persistently weak oil prices driven by domestic market access bottlenecks and global supply gluts have hit Western Canada hard, and trade tensions between China and the U.S. in particular are impacting consumer confidence across the continent.

“House prices and home sales volumes were soft and slow last year; expect modestly better results in 2019,” said Soper. “That said, the underlying Canadian economy, and employment in particular, continues to impress. Job creation is beating expectations handily. The unemployment rate of 5.6 per cent is a 43-year low.

“A silver lining in this cloud of uncertainty is the opportunity for young families to enter the market,” Soper continued.

The unemployment rate is about half of where it was during the financial crisis. It is also important to note that actual retail-market rates for a five year fixed term mortgage, the most popular offering in Canada, sit at approximately 3.5 per cent today versus approximately 5.9 per cent a decade ago; a full forty per cent lower.3

“Employment is high, rates are low, and home prices are essentially flat. 2019 is shaping up to be a year of rare opportunities,” Soper concluded.

Tight rental markets, record levels of immigration, and a wave of Millennials looking to buy their first homes are putting pressure on limited housing stock in many of Canada's metropolitan regions.

“Despite the price corrections and low sales activity we saw in 2018, it is important that policymakers don't take their eye off the ball when it comes to housing supply. That would be a huge mistake,” added Soper. “In down markets, construction tends to slow, exasperating our housing shortage problems. From there it is simple supply and demand; if we don't build more homes, we risk another housing crisis and a return to runaway prices in our major markets.”

During the fourth quarter, buyers in Ontario continued to look beyond the GTA in search of affordability. Despite some price relief in the suburbs surrounding Toronto, buyers from the region are still venturing out to other Southern Ontariocities where price points are significantly lower.

Of the regions studied in the Royal LePage National House Price Composite, Windsor and Kingston saw the highest appreciation rates in Ontario, rising 14.7 and 13.8 per cent year-over-year, respectively. Meanwhile, regions including Ottawa, Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, and London saw strong aggregate price gains of 9.3 per cent, 9.0 per cent, and 8.9 per cent, respectively.

The GTA was a story of contrasts. The City of Toronto experienced a strong rebound in the fourth quarter, while the surrounding areas remained relatively weak year-over-year. Prices in Toronto saw sizable increases, rising 8.8 per cent compared to 3.4 per cent gains for the GTA more broadly. Some of the surrounding suburbs, which saw rapid price increases in recent years, continued to slow, with declines in areas like Markham, Pickering, and Richmond Hill of 7.1 per cent, 5.6 per cent, and 4.9 per cent, respectively.

“The market correction in the suburbs of Toronto has been more significant than elsewhere in the country, because price increases in recent years were more extreme,” said Soper. “Even as prices in the core of the nation's largest city begin to rise again, we expect prices in the region known as the '905' to remain soft, providing new families with an unexpected entry opportunity into some of the most sought-after communities in southern Ontario.”

In Quebec, the Greater Montreal Area's real estate market continues to set the pace among Canada's largest metropolitans, supported by continued high demand, healthy household income and population growth. Despite positive economic fundamentals, price appreciation for real estate in most of the province's regions outside of the GMA still continue to be dampened by worker shortages as small businesses struggle to attract workers to their communities. On the other hand, worker shortages tend to put upward pressure on salaries, which could improve affordability.

In the fourth quarter, the aggregate price of a home in the Greater Montreal Area passed the $400,000 mark, rising to $407,230, an increase of 4.1 per cent from the same period last year. This represents a higher rate of appreciation than that seen in both the GTA and Greater Vancouver, and above the national aggregate percentage increase. During this period, the median price of a two-storey home in the Greater Montreal Area rose 3.5 per cent year-over-year to $517,190, after surpassing the half-million-dollar mark for the first time in the third quarter. The condominium market in the area continued its solid performance this quarter compared to last year, rising 4.9 per cent to $328,254.

British Columbia has been an economic outperformer in recent years, but economists are beginning to forecast slowing growth because of the cooling housing market. The relative unaffordability of major markets and the implementation of mortgage stress tests and provincial tax policies have dampened price growth in the province. Home price appreciation in Greater Vancouver grew at a modest pace rising 2.1 per cent in the fourth quarter from the year before, to an aggregate price of $1,274,831. More affordable suburbs like Langley, Surrey, and Coquitlam that had seen double digit price growth in previous quarters grew at a more modest pace rising 2.4 per cent, 2.3 per cent, and 0.4 per cent respectively.

Despite weak oil prices and uncertainty in the energy industry, all cities studied in Alberta posted year-over-year price increases, with the exception of Fort McMurray, which saw a 9.4 per cent decline. The aggregate price of a home in Calgary and Edmonton rose 1.3 per cent and 1.6 per cent, respectively, to $484,462 and $385,550.

Saskatchewan's housing market was negatively affected by the weakness in the natural resources sector in the fourth quarter. The aggregate home price in Regina increased 0.1 per cent year-over-year, while the aggregate home price in Saskatoon decreased 1.7 per cent year-over-year. This represents a quarter-over-quarter decrease of 1.9 per cent and 0.5 per cent, respectively.

Stocks rebound on economic recovery hopes

THE MAIN INDEX closed higher on Friday as investors gained some optimism before heading into the weekend.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) picked up 65.57 points or 1.11% to close at 5,967.96, while the broader all shares index added 23.82 points or 0.67% to end at 3,577.38.

The PSEi dropped to a low of 5,888.36 early in the day but quickly entered green territory where it stayed for the rest of the session, reaching a peak of 5,967.96 upon closing.

“Local shares closed higher as investor hopes for a further recovery took precedence over weak labor market data and a lack of progress on another fiscal stimulus bill in Washington,” Regina Capital Development Corp. Head of Sales Luis A. Limlingan said in a mobile message.

Economic data released recently point to some recovery: the unemployment rate went down to 10% in July from a record 17.7% in April, foreign portfolio investments rose 42% in May after a three-month decline, and cash remittances grew 7.7% in June after contracting since March.

These data, along with the relative slowdown in local coronavirus cases this week, helped improve investor sentiment.

The PSEi’s movement was also in line with some Asian markets, such as Japan, China and Hong Kong, which were trading in green territory when the local bourse closed.

Meanwhile, US stocks fell on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite indices went down by 1.45%, 1.76% and 1.99%, respectively.

Most sectoral indices at the local bourse ended Friday’s session with gains. Holding firms rose 117.08 points or 1.92% to 6,212.94; services grew 16.50 points or 1.12% to 1,487.51; property climbed 16.68 points or 0.61% to 2,733.67; and industrials improved 41.13 points or 0.51% to 8,071.54.

However, mining and oil shed 18.37 points or 0.30% to 5,991.36 and financials dropped 2.91 points or 0.25% to 1,150.90 at the end of trading.

Some 1.11 billion issues valued at P4.18 billion switched hands on Friday, growing from the previous day’s 770.87 million issues worth P5.96 billion.

Decliners narrowly beat decliners, 92 against 90, while 51 names ended unchanged.

Foreign investors returned to selling on Friday, posting net outflows of P527.02 million versus net purchases worth P420.91 million on Thursday. — Denise A. Valdez

Zillow Resumes Buying Homes in Six Additional Markets as Housing Market Continues Strong Recovery

Zillow Group, Inc., is now buying homes in six additional markets, bringing the total to 15.

Starting June 9, homeowners in Atlanta, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Texas, San Diego and Sacramento, Calif., can sell their homes directly to Zillow once again in a convenient, seamless transaction through Zillow Offers. Zillow paused buying homes in the 24 markets where Zillow Offers operates on March 23 in response to housing market uncertainty and public health concerns.

MANILA – The local stock barometer slipped for the third consecutive day Thursday following the release of the country’s 2020 economic data but the peso remains sideways against the US dollar.

 The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) went down by 0.17 percent, or 11.77 points, to 6,851.84 points.

 All Shares declined by 0.56 percent, or 22.98 points, to 4,108.34 points. 

 Most of the sectoral gauges also finished the day in the negative territory, led by the Mining and Oil index, which declined by 2.17 percent.

 It was trailed by Services, 1.43 percent; Industrial, 0.48 percent; and Financials, 0.39 percent.

 On the other hand, both the Holding Firms and Property indexes rose by 0.09 percent.

 Volume totaled 56.22 billion shares amounting to PHP8.8 billion.

 Losers led gainers at 136 to 73, while 53 shares were unchanged.

 “Local shares traded slightly negative as the final print of 2020 GDP (gross domestic product) showed a slower contraction. However, many opted to sell after the US Fed’s message did not sit well within investors,” Luis Limlingan, Regina Capital Development Corporation head of sales, said.

 The Philippine economy posted an 8.3-percent contraction in the fourth quarter last year, better than the revised 11.4 percent in the previous quarter. 

 The full-year figure stood at -9.5 percent, the lower end of the government’s -8.5 to -9.5 percent target.

 The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) kept the Federal Reserve’s funds rates target range to between 0 to 0.25 percent, with monetary authorities saying the pace of economic recovery has “moderated in recent months.”

 Meanwhile, the peso ended the day at 48.11 from 48.075 Wednesday.

 It opened the day at 48.115 from 48.06 a day ago.

 It traded between 48.145 and 48.097, resulting in an average of 48.121.

 Volume totaled USD1.19 billion, higher than the previous session’s USD1.12 billion. (PNA)

The Italian cigarette market is one of the largest in Western Europe, although sales have recently seen a decline. Further price increases and a deteriorating economic climate led to decreases in duty paid volumes, with a sharp fall in 2012 (7.9%) and 2013 (6%).

Saskatchewan is Canada’s second-largest oil producer, accounting for 12% of total crude oil production and the sixth-largest onshore oil-producing jurisdiction in Canada and the United States behind Texas, Alberta, North Dakota, California, and Alaska.  

In 2017, Saskatchewan produced 177.2 million barrels (28.2 million cubic metres) of oil.  There are approximately 37,000 active oil wells in the province.

Remaining recoverable oil reserves are 1.2 billion barrels (193.9 million cubic metres).  Saskatchewan is the third-largest natural gas producing province in Canada. In 2017, gas production was 188.3 billion cubic feet (5.3 billion cubic metres).

Technology  

Currently approximately 12% of the 56 billion barrels (8.9 billion cubic metres) of oil in-place is recoverable based on current and expected conditions. With approximately 88% of the oil remaining in the ground, there is excellent potential for the use of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology.  

EOR technologies like polymer floods, carbon dioxide (CO2) injection and steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) have the potential to increase investment and resource recoveries in Saskatchewan.  

The Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC) is currently undertaking the Aquistore Project, which is the first industrial-scale deep saline formation CO2 storage project in Canada.  

Two major CO2 flood projects are presently active in the province; one in the Weyburn Unit by Whitecap Resources Inc. and one in the Midale Unit by Cardinal Energy Ltd. Together these projects are projected to recover 267 million barrels (42.4 million cubic metres) of incremental oil, lengthen each unit’s operating life by at least 25 years and provide underground storage for approximately 35 million tonnes of CO2.

Millennials Are Sick of Drinking

On January 20, 2017, Cassie Schoon rolled into work with a hangover. It was the morning of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, and Schoon, who doesn’t count herself among the president’s fans, had gone out for drinks with friends the night before to take her mind off it. The evening’s distraction left her in pretty rough shape the next day. “I was in this meeting feeling absolutely miserable and I was like, you know, this is not what grownups do,” she says.

Since then, Schoon, who is 37 and lives in Denver, has cut way back on alcohol. “[Drinking] has to be more of an occasion for me now, like someone’s birthday or a girl’s night,” she says. “So it’s once every couple of weeks, instead of a weekly occurrence.” Drinking less wasn’t always simple for her: Denver is a young town with a vibrant brewery and bar scene, and Schoon’s social circle had long centered itself around meeting up for drinks. But avoiding booze has been worth it. “I started to realize there’s no reason I can’t see these people and go to museums or go out for waffles or something,” Schoon says.

In the past few weeks, I’ve heard from more than 100 Americans in their 20s and 30s who have begun to make similar changes in their drinking habits or who are contemplating ways to drink less. They have good company: Public-health efforts have helped drive down adolescent drinking rates, and American beverage manufacturers are beginning to hedge their bets on alcohol’s future. Media, too, has noticed that change is afoot. Recent months have seen a flurry of trend stories about millennials—currently about 22 to 38 years old—getting sober.

But sobriety, a term that generally refers to the total abstention practiced by people in recovery from substance-abuse problems, doesn’t quite tell the story. What some have been quick to characterize as an interest in being sober might actually be more like a search for moderation in a culture that has long treated alcohol as a dichotomy: You either drink whenever the opportunity presents itself, or you don’t drink at all. Many millennials—and especially the urban, college-educated consumers prized by marketers—might just be tired of drinking so much.

There isn’t any great statistical evidence yet that young adults have altered their drinking habits on a grand scale. Changes in habit often lag behind changes in attitude, and national survey data on drinking habits reflect only small declines in heavy alcohol use. (For men, that’s drinking five alcoholic beverages in a short period of time five or more times in a month; for women, it’s four drinks under the same conditions.) From 2015 through 2017, the most recent year for which data is available, the rate of millennials who report that they have consumed any amount of alcohol in the past month has remained pretty steady, at more than 60 percent.

But there are limitations to this data that would make it difficult to capture the types of changes that people described to me. Someone who has cut back from regularly having two or three glasses of wine with dinner to only having a glass once a week, for example, would still fall into the same statistical category, eliding shifts that might make a huge difference on a personal level. And a desire to drink less doesn’t mean that people no longer enjoy drinking. Instead, it might be that alcohol-centric socializing has crept into more parts of people’s lives and stuck around for longer than previous generations had to contend with it.

For young Americans, drinking is very social. “I drank pretty regularly in my 20s, especially in social situations,” says Leanne Vanderbyl, who lives in San Francisco. “It wasn’t until I hit my 30s that I realized that alcohol was no longer my friend.” A few decades ago, marriage and children might have moved urban, college-educated young adults away from social drinking naturally, but fewer millennials are taking part in traditional family-building, and the ones doing it are waiting longer than their parents did. Now, the structure of social life isn’t that different for many people in their mid-30s than it was in their early 20s, which provides plenty of time spent drinking on dates and with friends for them to start to get a little tired of it.

For a generation that’s also behind its forebears when it comes to wealth accumulation, whether or not it’s a good idea to buy a bunch of beer or several $13 cocktails three nights a week can come down to practical concerns. Alex Belfiori, a 30-year-old IT professional in Pittsburgh, decided recently to stop keeping beer in the house. “I’ve already calculated how much I’m saving by not drinking, and I’m thinking about where I can put that money now,” he says. Nina Serven, a 24-year-old brand manager living in Brooklyn, is similarly over it. “Drinking just feels boring and needlessly expensive,” she says, even though she feels social pressure to drink. “I just started a medication that shouldn't be mixed with alcohol, and I'm relieved that I have an easy out.”

Britta Starke, an addictions therapist and the program director of the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Center at the University of North Carolina, sees a similar malaise in those seeking guidance from in her practice. “There does come a time when there has to be some introspection,” she says. “Folks in the millennial generation have maybe a better sense of balance. Some do yoga or meditation or are physically active, so they don’t need to find stimulation and stress-reduction in substances.” That mirrors the generation’s general interest in maintaining its health, and for those questioning their habits, realizing that a healthier relationship with alcohol doesn’t require most people to give up drinking might ease people’s social concerns.

Still, Starke has noticed some worrying attitudinal trends toward alcohol among her younger patients. Millennials who haven’t developed their generation’s signature coping skills often use alcohol heavily. Starke sees an alarming number of people under 35 with advanced liver disease or alcohol hepatitis. As attitudes may be moderating for many young adults, plenty of others are struggling: Nearly 90,000 people still die from alcohol-related causes in America every year, and that number hasn’t started to meaningfully improve.

Moreover, drinking doesn’t exist in a substance-use vacuum. All the other things millennials are well-known for ingesting play a role in its shifting popularity. “It still seems like this is a generation of self-medicating, but they’re using things differently,” says Starke, and the normalization and ever-more-common legalization of cannabis plays a big role in that.

Among the people I spoke with in detail, several mentioned replacing their evening wine with an evening bowl. “I smoke weed to unwind—thank you, California,” says Vanderbyl. For her, cannabis lacks the lingering effects that drove her away from alcohol: “I can wake up in the morning feeling ready for the day.” She’s not alone in making that switch. A 2017 study found that in counties with legalized medicinal cannabis, alcohol sales dropped more than 12 percent when compared to similar counties without weed. Recreational legalization has the potential to bolster that effect by making cannabis products even more broadly accessible.

Millennials have also shown what Starke says is worrisome interest in other drugs, the abuse of which may be diverting some of their attention from alcohol. She sees many patients looking for help with opioids, as well as benzodiazepines like Xanax. Just because young people want to drink less often doesn’t necessarily mean they’re better off: Suicide rates are up among young adults, and prescription abuse is a problem the country is only beginning to address.

The beverage industry does seem to see the writing on the wall. Over the past decade, a tide of artisanal alcohol businesses met the swelling millennial market for booze-based socializing, including innumerable microbreweries and distilleries, as well as high-end cocktail bars and wine shops targeting younger clientele. Now, 2018 Nielsen data shows that sales growth across alcohol categories is slowing. Bon Appetit estimates that the market for low- or no-alcohol beverages could grow by almost a third in just the next three years.

If he spaces in which alcohol is consumed will also have to change to meet shifting consumer demands. It’s become notably easier in recent years to find alcohol-free cocktails in urban bars across America. In New York City, a few young entrepreneurs are opening up new kinds of spaces to serve the tastes of their peers. Listen Bar, a clubby pop-up that gives patrons a chance to party without alcohol, is crowdfunding to lease its first permanent location. In Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, Getaway, a bar so dedicated to being booze-free that it won’t even use bitters that contain alcohol, is opening in a few weeks.

Getaway’s owners, Sam Thonis and Regina Dellea, left careers in media to open the bar, which was an idea inspired by Thonis’s brother’s recovery from alcoholism. So far, the reception the pair has received bears out the broader generational shift they’re anticipating. “It feels to me like the older people are, the more they see [our bar] as a thing for sober people. They see it as black or white—you drink or you don’t drink,” says Thonis. “With younger people, there’s a lot more receptiveness to just not drinking sometimes.”

Instead of being the tipping point of any grand trend in alcohol consumption themselves, millennials might simply be the canaries in the coal mine. Statistically, it’s Gen Z, the age group currently in high school and college, that may force a sea change in America’s relationship with alcohol. They’re drinking at lower rates than adolescents have in generations, and so much about a person’s lifetime relationship to substance abuse and consumption is set by usage in early life.

For now, many young adults seem relieved that pressure they’ve internalized to drink is easing and more options are opening up. Drinking’s spot in people’s lives doesn’t have to be as all-or-nothing as American culture has long regarded it. “For many people, when they’re honest with their friends [about wanting to skip out on drinks], their friends are like, ‘Oh my god, I was thinking about that too,’” says UNC’s Starke. “I don’t know too many people who have gotten a negative response.”

Dellea has also noticed a mix of excitement and relief among her bar’s prospective patrons. “An Instagram account put up a picture of the bar,” she says. “A lot of the comments were just people tagging their friends.”
