Pokemon TCG Pocket is "balanced" around the fact that on the very first turn you can't apply energy to your pokemon - something you could do in the real TCG

but i put "balanced" in quotes because if your deck has a way of generating energy (now out of nowhere because there are no energy cards, just an energy deck) you 100% can attack on the first turn - a rule the real TCG doesn't allow you to do

and because the pokemon tcg has a Basic EX pokemon problem that can never go away because the cards are cool, if you have a deck that can do this and an extremely powerful Basic EX pokemon that you can guarantee in your hand, you can win first turn

which people have been doing, because you can make your deck guarantee you start with said pokemon, because your draws aren't completely random and there's no mulligan clause

the only "saving grace" is that this is a completely noncompetitive game where winning barely gets you anything, so there's no pressure when you lose to this, but it's frustrating nonetheless

the ai in pokemon tcg pocket isn't perfect (I saw it return a perfectly good pokemon it could've kept out and won with), but it's funny that right now (at least the ai of the opponent), it's recognizing that if it damages my pokemon it'll just get stronger so it's just been avoiding attacking at all

it would've been easy to just have the ai always attack if able

I do enjoy how the new pokemon mobile game's tutorial starts with "pokemon cards aren't just for collecting"

Like they're begging people to realize that it is in fact a card game
