wut do u think darrys personality was actually like before the accident? do u think it was still kind of soc-y even though i guess he had graduated already? my hc is tht he was always a little bit separated emotionally from his brothers but not as extensive as it becomes after he becomes their guardian.

IIIIII think that he was, obviously, a much happier person before the Events. he worked very hard and was very determined, but kept the mindset of “everything happens for a reason”. couldn't pay for college immediately? that sucks but the universe must want me to work for a while and be able to pay for it myself! not like naively optimistic but a lot more go with the flow and believing that hard work will pay off naturally. after the accident that changes to “life is unfair and random and you have to work hard to overcome it and take what you want by the throat”.

he may come Off a bit soc-y in the sense that he is just generally more outwardly cold and sarcastic, sometimes a little know it all-ish-- but not mean like dally. i don't think it's too bad and most of those traits he had Before befriending the socs. darry has always kinda been a black sheep with the greasers so him not acting a lot like them has never been abnormal.

as for him and his brothers, i am a sucker for him being such a good older brother when they're younger. it's probably more apparent with soda because they're closer in age, but he subtly doted on them both a lot. i mean they're siblings so they're gonna argue and mess with each other, but i think he was always very protective and patient and attentive to them. soda and pony always have the understanding of “if you don't want to call mom or dad, call darry” when they're in trouble 😭. imo that makes how cold he gets after the accident hurt a little more. he's obviously still reliable and protective, but the patience is gone and it all feels more out of obligation than adoration.

- The first time it happens, Pony wakes up screaming bloody murder. Like scream-sobbing, nearly as bad as when he found out their parents had died. He’s convinced it was real and is struggling out of bed while Soda’s trying to get him to calm down and talk to him, but Pony’s wrestling away

- Pony’s reaction is so violent and visceral and it scares Soda nearly to tears, just seeing it and thinking something genuinely terrible has happened. You know when you see someone else is so much distress that you start feeling it too? That’s how Soda is feeling. And he’s just yelling out to Darry for help because he’s never seen Pony so completely inconsolable

- I imagine Darry’s a light sleeper, so of course he’s up like a shot and racing over to Pony and Soda’s room, his heart in his throat the entire time

- Darry’s nearly convinced they need to bring Pony to the hospital. There’s no way this was the result of a nightmare, but Soda tells him what happened

- When he notices Darry sitting on the bed, Pony’s in his arms faster than he’s ever done anything, just crying into his shoulder, can’t even form any words. Darry is baffled, but it’s outweighed by a fierce protectiveness, so he just hugs Pony back and murmurs into his hair small comforts like “It’s okay, it’s okay, honey. I’m here, I ain’t going anywhere, baby.”

- Soda’s rubbing circles into Pony’s back like their parents used to, just trying to keep the physical contact in hopes that it starts to anchor him

- But it’s Darry who Pony needed, just his presence and the reminder that it wasn’t real, Darry��s alive and well, he wasn’t in the car that day, wasn’t on the tracks, wasn’t mangled and ruined and dead. He’s got them right in his arms

- And when Pony’s calmed down enough to speak, he just says “I thought you were dead” in a wobbly voice that quivers and shakes, cracking during that last horrible word

- Darry doesn’t know what to say, so he hugs him tighter and holds the back of his head and hopes it’s enough

- Since then, Pony’s never had a reaction as extreme and intense as that one, but Soda knows what’s happened when Pony is crying into his hands and getting up to leave in the middle of the night. He knows where Pony is going and knows that for this one thing, he’s just not enough comfort, because he’s not Darry

Wow that was a lot of angst but hopefully you can see my little crumbs of love in there, I can’t do straight heartache I think I would just die.

Musical Curtis brothers hcs

Darry:

-Felt insecure and jealous of Dally because of his closeness to Pony and it got worse after Pony leaves and Dally says that thing of seeing Pony more than Darry has.

-Like Ponyboy he blames himself for their parents' death because of it being his birthday and they were going for the frosting for his cake.

-Post musical whenever things get too much he goes to Soda and he cries but will quickly stop and hide it when he hears Ponyboy nearby (he doesn't want Pony to see him break)

-Despite that when they reunited in the hospital after the fire just like in the movie he did cry when going to hug Ponyboy.

-He does go easier on Ponyboy about his daydreams/emotions and his grades after reading the story because he saw how Ponyboy viewed him.

-Even though he is only 6yrs older than Ponyboy the role of brother is starting to fade into father ("stuck between the role of a brother and a father")

-Tucks in the boys each night but after they're already sleeping totally not based off of Melody's live.

-Whenever he misses his parents he sleeps in their room instead of his own.

-Used to care what his hair would look like now it's a miracle if he even takes time to brush it.

-On his days off instead of relaxing he still tries to keep working (washing dishes/laundry/cleaning random parts of the house) until Soda has to force him to just sit down and rest.

-Still tries to play football whenever he can but waits for someone to suggest it first (it's Soda who does it because he knows Darry wants to play).

-When Soda has a long day at work or Pony has a test coming up Darry tries to make their favorite food for dinner.

Soda:

-He has his own room but still sleeps with Pony because of the nightmares (pretty sure this is canon but I don't remember for sure).

-Tried to read Great Expectations for Ponyboy when he and Johnny were gone because he missed Pony.

-He, Ace, and Steve are the most chaotic trio when they're together. (sometimes he catches Melvin the soc staring at Ace and finds it hilarious) Inspired by Melody's tiktok of Melvin looking for Ace's digits

-He folds all the laundry when he sees Darry has had a hard day at work and even offers to cook.

-Was allowed to cook once nearly set the kitchen on fire and was never allowed to cook again.

-He really did try in school just couldn't do it no matter how hard he tried so when Steve told him there was the full time position open at the DX that was his reason/excuse to drop out.

-During the 2 weeks that Pony was disassociating Soda was terrified of losing both Pony and Darry (because of throwing in the towel) to the point that he wouldn't sleep some nights which is what also leads to him eventually snapping.

-Would sleep in Darry's room on the nights Darry would fall asleep by the telephone so he would feel at least one brother close by.

-Watched the cartoon's Darry mentioned in throwing in the towel to keep himself from worrying too much but it never worked.

Ponyboy:

-Kept both Dally and Johnny's jackets and wears them when he misses them but never actually lasts long with them on because he starts crying.

-Panics if multiple people accidentally touch him because he gets flashbacks to being grabbed and almost drowned.

-Which he now also has a fear of being in water too long.

-The first night after the church burning he asked both Darry and Soda if they can share the bed with him because he missed them.

-Sometimes dreams of the house with the garden he wanted with Johnny after his death and he wakes up screaming and sobbing because he knows now all it will ever be is a dream.

-Tries to quit smoking because he genuinely believes he caused the fire that killed Johnny and eventually Dally.

-Used to be ashamed of his name and would get bullied for it until Johnny would tell him how original it was.

-Still believes death's at his door but he tells both his brothers of it and how he's been feeling so it's getting further and he's slowly trying to get better.

Now for all 3 brothers (I only have 2 tbh):

-Their train related trauma isn't lessening especially after Dally.

-When nights get bad for them they have a sleepover in the living room and watch cartoons.

a/n: i have woken again to post for you guys 🥰 this is true dedication bc i started this at 1:03am and it's now 2:50 at the time of officially uploading this (with this a/n cause it's an edit). first i was gonna talk ab how dilf matt dillon is, then i was gonna make matt hcs, THEN i was gonna do dally hcs, and FINALLY i decided on writing this because toxic dallas is stuck in my headdd😣. i am a FIRM believer that dallas winston is EITHER loverboy softboy around reader OR cold toxic bf that is afraid of commitment and love because of his past in new york. NO OTHER WAY TO PUT IT!

dating dallas, you knew whaat would come with it. no, not just the constant "gettin' it in with the fuzz" or his repetitive fights at buck's on a thursday night, but the laid back "ya know i don't love anythin'" motto he always has going on. you and dallas had probably broken up 5 or 6 times in the past month. either he'd be out with another broad, or he'd be dismissing your feelings again and telling you "i mean i like ya, doll. that's close enough to what you're talkin' about, right? i mean what's love anyways? don't say things you don't understand.."

you'd recently just gotten back together with dallas. you'd broken up with him because you found out he was hitting on another girl, this time a soc named cherry valance.

meanwhile dallas stood in front of the curtis house still, watching you walk away. he tried to act like he didn't care, but deep down he knew he did. "did she get home safe? is she alright? man, i messed up. god, im a jerk. do i love her?" were the questions racing through his mind. he didn't know wether he should run to your house or keep going about his day like nothing happened.

the sound of the curtis' screen door closing brought back dallas' attention as darry walked up to him, trying to give whatever advice he could. "hey dal, maybe you guys should call it quits or somethin', i mean-"

"hey man how 'bout you shutup, alright? mind your own." dallas clapped back, interrupting darry. darry seemingly understood his defeat as he raised his hands in surrender and backed up into the house. all the guys asked what was going on, and as a response he just sighed and shook his head.

about an hour later you heard a knock on your door. assuming it was your best friend marcia, since you'd called her a couple minutes before to sleep over, you opened the door without checking who it was. to your surprise, you were met with dallas.

in his hand he had a rose, definitely stolen, some soda (i say pop where im from but whatever..), and a box of milk duds, also probably stolen.

you scoff out of shock before finally speaking. "dally? what's this?" you asked. dallas just rolled his eyes and responded "just let me in the house, man i wouldn't even be caught dead doin' this for anyone.." you couldn't help but grin as you let him in, closing the door behind him. yeah you guys had previously argued but, it felt good to be in dally's presence again..

you both took a seat on your bed, sitting in silence for a bit. finally, you decided you'd had enough of the tension. ok so keep in mind i havent read the book since december (i dont have my own copy) so this might be a bit wrong. im using info from my mind, the movie, the musical, tiktok, and here.

Johnny Cade

so its canon that johnny wouldve ran away if it werent for the gang (starting off strong with dally-johnny parallels OUCH)

the abuse from his parents definitely gave him a fucked up sense on what it means to feel loved

which is why johnny gets along with dally so well, i'll get into that more in dally's part

he 100% thinks that the entire world hates him except for the gang

someone said that he is so sweet its sick, not true. the abuse definitely toughened him up enough that he will be mean to strangers

he canonically is somewhat responsible (going out to the store to buy supplies and giving ponyboy a note)

im saying that because im pretty sure pony says something like twobit and someone else in the gang would forget to buy something johnny remembered

johnny learned that from having to live out on the street sometimes when his parents fought or kicked him out for multiple days

he is the living definition of forgive but never forget

he just wants a home

i personally hc that the abuse started as johnny grew older, maybe when he was 6-8 years old

which is why johnny (especially in the musical) still cares about his parents

because he remembers that they WERE good people

and he hopes to bring them back eventually

another fall hc but darry will take soda and pony for rides in his truck at the end of the day (mostly post book) because pony likes looking at all the pretty leaves and soda just likes going for rides. darry let’s pony sit in the open area of his truck (like the back? idk what it’s called but it’s the spot you’d put like timber and stuff) and he just loves looking at pony through the rear view mirror with his eyes closed and that little smile on his face and his hair blowing in the wind…and soda has his head stuck out the window like a dog lol-even darry has his window down. sometimes he likes having the wind blow through his hair after a tough day of work.

sometimes he’ll take his brothers for single rides tho like he’ll take soda out at night when pony’s asleep because soda doesn’t often let himself be vulnerable around pony but opens up like a book to darry, but darry will take soda for nighttime rides and they’ll just talk. sometimes soda will cry. darry uses one hand on the wheel and the other to wipe away his tears. sometimes if pony is real stressed about school he’ll take pony for a sunset drive and he’ll let pony talk about his day and what’s on his mind and he’ll offer help if it’s academic and he’ll offer support if it’s something mental like missing johnny or dallas. but darry also knows the most breathtaking areas from roofing around tulsa and he loves seeing pony’s eyes light up at the golden sky and the falling leaves. sometimes darry will go for long rides by himself if he’s had a long day. pony and soda know when hes taking a ride because he is always an hour/hour and a half late. but darry finds it relaxing to just blast the radio and speed through Tulsa for a bit while the sun sets and the moon rises.

also may i mention all three boys look STUNNING with wind blown hair.

i’m not sure how much Darry would like a really clingy s/o? i don’t think he’d mind obviously, but i think he really values his independence so having an s/o that always wants to hang out or whatever would frustrate him just a little bit

I think Ponyboy would adore a clingy s/o because if you ask me he’d be quite clingy himself yknow? his love language is quality time so he’d love someone who enjoys hanging out or cuddling or even just going to the movie house with him. that’s just how he rolls

Sodapop is quite similar to ponyboy but let’s be honest when you’re hanging out with soda you’ll probably end up babysitting him. he’d start drinking or something and get all clingy too, or maybe he’d just have a sugar rush and get all hyper. seriously sodapop is just the human embodiment of a golden retriever.

Dallas wouldn’t like a clingy s/o in my opinion, he likes to be independent. maybe when you’re out together he wouldn’t mind having his arm around you or having his hand in the pocket of your jeans but he still has a reputation of being like a ‘bad boy’ or whatever way you wanna put it.

Two-bit would be like sodapop in the sense that you’d have to babysit him and that he’d love having someone that he can hang out with and talk to whenever. he’d never stop holding your hand when the two of you are out.

Steve would also love a clingy s/o but maybe he would get more annoyed after a lot of hanging out, he’s so hot headed that i think sometimes he’d get angry about something and then he’d just want to be alone. i do think that the dx is the time for he and soda to hang out. obviously he would love it if you visited him at work. but not all day. he’s still working after all and plus sodas his best friend; they need alone time

johnny would like a s/o that’s clingy but not someone who’s too clingy if you get what i mean? he likes someone who enjoys hanging out and will ask to hang out often but not someone who wants to be with him 24/7. i think that would overwhelm him, kinda scare him off a little.

Is he strict? Embarrassing? How was he in the start after their parents death vs like post-book ish?

So at the beginning of the book Darry was LOST. He had NO clue how to raise kids 😭 (within the first month he bought like. 5-6 different books on parenting and child development and had a lot of really long talks w/ Ponyboy's school counselors and doctor (mostly because w/ the nightmares and stuff he was really worried)). He was really distant for a few months after the accident, but he slowly warmed back up. Ponyboy and Soda were so worried for him though.

Contrary to popular opinion Darry isn't THAT strict. I mean he lets Ponyboy do basically whatever he wants unless it's dangerous or if he hasn't done what he's supposed to. He lets him smoke like. a pack a day if he wants to 💀

I think after the parents died he was very worried about Ponyboy bc he saw a lot of himself in him, and he didn't want him to end up the same way he did (unfulfilled and stressed out). So he was pretty hard on him when it came to school, but it was also in an effort to keep him out of trouble. Darry has seen how tragedy and hardship can change people for the worst (Dally and some of the other greasers) and he wants to protect Ponyboy from that as best as he can.

I think people need to talk abt just how much Darry really cares for him and believes he can achieve good things😭 bro is so lucky man

But after the book Darry was less hard on Ponyboy bc he was more worried about his safety/survival (my hc is that Pony suffered mentally afterwards. He was really depressed for a good year or so and Darry was scared to death). And by then they had a little bit more financial stability so Darry was able to relax (at least a little bit).

I would say Darry's a little embarrassing tho 😭 just cause he's not afraid to call Ponyboy out in front of the gang if he has to. Sometimes he'll be trying to act tough in front of Curly or the other older greasers and Darry will come into the living room like "I told you to take a shower 15 minutes ago 😡"

•they are very art donaldson/patrick zweig coded to Me. in the sense that their shared interest (a sport) brought them together and they never really examined their relationship outside of that context. "we're not talking about tennis" "what the fuck else do i have to talk to you about?" but make it football

•their friendship was never very emotionally deep. toxic masculinity and all, discussions of feelings/worries/anything too personal were super rare

•paul’s love language is gift giving but he plays it off like he has too much junk and doesn't need it so darry doesn't feel bad about taking it. darry's love language is quality time- practice, studying, lounging around, anything.

•^ the one exception is the madras shirt. that was originally given out of pity because paul noticed that darry acted like a soc, but his style gave him away as a greaser and paul didn't really wanna be seen with him like that (he got over it tho because darry cant just wear that one shirt every day)

•darry had a crush on him. he didn't know it and always interpreted those feelings as being irrationally jealous of paul. do i wanna be him or be with him stuff. was it reciprocated? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

•that being said, they are chronically envious of each other. darry is jealous of paul economically (he hates being poor) and paul is jealous of darry socially (he want to be as well liked as darry is)

•they begin falling out of touch after graduating. when paul goes to college he pretty much gets a whole new friend group, all but cutting darry out and replacing him

•nail on the coffin (no pun intended) is when he doesn't come to the curtis parents' funeral. that's when darry decides to hate paul because being angry at him is easier than mourning his best friend alongside everything else he's lost

•paul, who is kinda oblivious does not recognize this as the consequences of his own actions, resents darry for unilaterally deciding their friendship is over

• all that being said, i think an eventual reconciliation is possible. it'd definitely take many years post canon, but maybe one day when they're older and wiser they can work it out in the remix <3

-90% sure this one is from you on the outsiders server but Darry having their parents rings as a necklace.

-He needs glasses. refuses to wear them

-he's got a tan, he's working all day on rooftops there's no way he isn't hella tan

-He's gay, I just can't see him with a woman at all

-Had something with Paul, "Something flickered behind Darry's eyes and then they were ice again", sure it could be jealousy, or the emotion of seeing an old friend again but on the other side of the war, but it feels like they were much closer than just friend (musical also makes them so much closer than book/movie), and his eyes showed emotion for a second from devastation and quite frankly shock that he'd see his ex around or something along those lines

-Him and Two-bit are the closest in the gang. I don't think this was in the book, but it makes sense really, they're the closest in age and where darry takes everything literally, two-bit can't take anything literally and opposites attract, making them really good friends.

-He takes naps, or tries. I like to include my own hc into this, where he physically can't fall asleep before it's late, but even then he finds it hard to sleep.

-He got depression after his parents died. Like, he got shoved into a role of a guardian and had to cook, clean, take care of, work, pay bills, get groceries and clothes, budget, almost immediately after their death and probably didn't let himself grieve properly. And that emptiness just lingered, and lingered, he didn't know what it was.

-He doesn't let anyone take care of him when he's sick, this would make even more sense post parents' death because in his head, he simply can't afford taking a few days to heal, because that might mean they go without eating a good meal for a while.

-He HAS smoked (maybe still does sometimes like sodapop) but ponyboy just never saw.

-He sees the whole gang as his brothers. This is probably the most canon one, even if it wasn't said in writing. Dallas' and Darry's fighting in the musical just really seems off to me, like even if it makes sense, it just feels wrong. Darry cares about them all in my eyes, but i still have yet to see the musical (jan 5th teehee) so I might understand better then
