“You are so good,” Henry tells them as he toys with his sensitive nipples. “My boys. My darlings.” Twin groans erupt from Alexander and George’s mouths, and he chuckles breathlessly in satisfaction.  Alexander tips forward, catching Henry’s lips in a hungry kiss. Henry slides a palm along his jaw and pushes his fingers into his hair, gripping at his dark curls. He pulls back just far enough to utter against his mouth, “Sit back with him, my darling. I want to see you both.”  Alexander gives him a minuscule nod and another biting kiss on the mouth, before he pulls out to sit back on his heels. Henry kisses George to quiet his whines as he eases him backwards until he is settled over Alexander’s lap. “Slowly, my dove,” Henry says as George lowers himself on Alexander’s cock. He is on his knees, his back to the alpha’s chest. He sinks until his entire length is inside of him.  “Oh, God,” George cries.  “You take his cock so well,” Henry praises, settling in the space in front of Alexander and George. “I used to think no one could handle his cock as well as I, but you have proven me wrong, my sweet omega. That is why you are perfect.” His hands trail a heated path down the length of his body. “That is why we want you to be our mate.” He rises to his knees and presses open mouth kisses along his broad shoulders. He gently nips at the base of his throat, the future home for their mating bites.  “You will be ours,” Alexander murmurs, joining Henry as they assault either side of George’s neck with kisses. “Our omega.”  George whimpers and reaches behind to grasp at Alexander’s curls. Chapter 6: Park Slope

Eljah’s phone woke him up around noon—too early. Being angry so fresh into consciousness was not the move.

“Rafa, I swear to the God that’s forsaken us, I will throw you into the first patch of sunlight I see. I was out late last night. I need-”

“This is actually Magnus.” Giggles were heard, the warlock’s amusement on display. In hindsight, it was too early for Raphael to be awake either. Who else could it have been?

“Oh, shit,” he groaned, stuffing his face into the neighboring pillow.

“It’s alright, dove. Maybe I should’ve let you get more sleep before I called.” Eljah murmured, flipping his entire body over and rubbing his nose bridge with his fingers.

“No, you’re fine, Magnus. What did you need help with?” He lifted himself up, discomforted by feeling the blood rush through his body and exhaustion present from last night that he hadn’t acknowledged before going to sleep. After throwing off his blanket, he went looking for the stele he assumed was still in his clothing.

“Who says I need help with anything? I can’t just want to call you?” Magnus sounded almost flirty.

Eljah wished he had another answer. He hadn’t made connections for almost five decades, or at least not any that weren’t business-only. It’s embarrassing to tell such a recognizable warlock that you’re a loser.

“Nobody besides Rafa calls me for anything besides assistance, to be honest.”

“That’s unfortunate. I’ll have to fix that.” If Eljah hadn’t muted himself, Magnus could’ve heard the strangled scream he held back. “If you’d like me to, of course.”

“Uh, cool, cool,” his subconscious screamed shut the fuck up, Eljah, “yeah, that would be… nice?”

“I’m glad. I do have a proposition for you, though. Would you be interested in having drinks later? I’ve asked Alexander, but he seems too busy. Said he’ll join us some other time.”

“Oh, I’m the backup, huh?” Eljah feigned humor, rather disappointed in reality. Magnus and Alec were both attractive men, and while Alec had confusing vibes around sexuality, Eljah was sure they’d work around it. He let his enthusiasm get the better of him and felt disheartened yet again. But Magnus didn’t give him time to overthink any more.

“You were never the backup, darling. I wanted to invite you both out.” Oh.

“Oh.”

“Oh?”

“Oh! That’s… sweet of you, really.” He could hear Magnus’ hushed laughing again, Eljah’s unease growing. Out of habit, he swiped the outgrown hair behind his ear, jolting at the heat in his cheeks. He felt dumber as the call carried on.

“I’ll buy you dinner. How’s 7:00?”

Eljah cleared his throat and kicked his hanging feet back and forth off the bed. “I’d love that. I have to shower, so I’ll talk to you later.”

The last thing Magnus said was, “think of me fondly,” before hanging up.

Eljah’s body screenshotted itself with the effort to not squeal. A couple of books on his corner shelf sprawled across the floor and the curtains blew open comedically. That wasn’t a very calm and detached reaction, and he was incredibly grateful for the privacy of his room.

Investing time to take walks for his “mental health” was Eljah’s new hobby. Exploring random parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn combined, no matter the distance, he walked until he couldn’t anymore. Anyone else would have viewed this as self-punishment. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. Eljah just let his body take control so his mind wouldn’t.

Eljah overused his endurance rune to the point Raphael told him it was abuse. It was easy to push himself beyond his limits and erase it with a swipe of his stele, just to progress further into a shutdown. He wasn’t used to having someone keep him in check, offer help, or care.

Raphael had begun calling once the vampire realized he’d left the DuMort with no destination in mind (again). It’s like he’d developed a sense for Eljah’s exact location, always knowing when he took off.

Eljah didn’t feel like picking up, burrowed in the depths of his brain and debating whether he was worth Magnus’ time, or anyone’s, for that matter. He always had amazing days followed by harrowing nights, or months without an episode, followed by lockdowns in the DuMort. The seesaw of emotions felt unbecoming and burdensome, which only added onto the weight his shoulders bore constantly.

Eljah had maintained composure and stability throughout the preceding hours he roamed, but the stress seized him upon conveniently passing an alley of lofts. He trudged over and plopped onto the nearby stairs, breath pulling away from him as stars swirled in his vision.

He could hear mumbles of angry conversation close by, but he couldn’t focus as he fumbled through his pockets looking for his stele. It wasn’t in his sweatpants pockets or hidden within his shoe. The yelling changed direction.

Eljah assumed his dizziness was only fatigue from wandering, but as his gaze blurred, pools of silver washed over his eyes and the muscles in his neck tensed.

It always felt gross, viscous, and seizing when he got visions and more so when he hadn’t received them for a time. His last was on the anniversary of his father’s death. It happened in a Brooklyn club, just outside of East Harlem, where the Hotel DuMort resided. He couldn’t remember the name, nor did he care, busy rolling a joint in the bathroom (not his finest or most hygienic move).

His head had shot up like usual, body lax against the folded toilet seat and unmoving like an exorcism (or so he’d heard). He saw nothing at first, random shapes, colors, and static taking peculiar forms behind his eyelids. And then altogether he saw bright lights and felt a heavy heartbeat.

He was in the body of a teenage boy, walking down a familiar road lined with dark alleys and aimlessly placed restaurants. He saw the key-shaped sign with yellow lettering, shaded but readable. That, alongside the iconic and recognizable “R” painted on the sign, informed him this young boy was outside Hotel DuMort. He seemed wobbly and all-too-giggly, which might’ve been fine if he wasn’t so young and completely alone.

He could sense danger nearby, auras packed like sardines in the distance; vampires waiting for an unsuspecting snack. Everyone needed to eat, or in their case, feed, but this innocent boy wouldn’t become dinner if Eljah could help it.

This would be one of the few times he fought with his fellow residents. He understood their needs, their situation. But the undead morals often needed checked.

His body released, muscles and jaw unclenching with the rush of energy leaving fast enough it made his head spin. Trying hard to move his limbs despite their resistance, he stumbled forward, catching on the stall door and snatching it open. He could save this kid if he just pushed forward. He snapped his fingers repeatedly as he faced the tiled wall, trying to spark his magic and watching the portal form and dispel again. His hands were icy, but the magic was heating him up.

He feared when he got the portal open that he’d been too late. His visions rotated between the past, present, and future at random. He shot out with newfound energy as he exited the portal and flexed his hands forward to release a burst of power. The group of vampires were like mosquitoes in summer, rushing at the dazed young boy. Eljah’s burst sent them stumbling back and cowering like the young boy they’d attempted to catch until they realized who he was.

“This is a child! How could you!?” Eljah shouted fiercely. He was beyond angry at their lack of compassion for a human at the dawn of their life.

“We could smell him. He shouldn’t have walked down our alley,” a random vamp Eljah couldn’t remember the name of spoke up.

“So according to your logic, your brothers and sisters should get executed for innocently walking past the Institute’s steps?” Referencing their mortal enemy only annoyed the other, small party more.

“Who cares?”

“You should,” Raphael startled the crowd and Eljah, vamps backing away to huddle near the DuMort entrance. With his usual rasp and lack of emotion, he reminded, “this is a mundane, you can’t hunt them for fun. If you break the accords and hurt a human, that provokes execution by the Clave.” Raphael flicked his eyes over to meet Eljah’s, who had hints of silver lining the veins of his eyes, sporting his dominant emotion like a stroke of paint and mirroring his natural hair.

Eljah felt guilty, despite having nothing to do with the situation. “Fix this,” he whispered desperately at Raphael’s side. The other shared the same sentiments, but avoided eye contact because of the mess his kin made.

The young boy was breathing sporadically, pure terror illustrated on his face. His glasses made him look even younger, breaking Eljah’s heart more. When Raphael approached him, the teenager backed himself against the wall.

“I’m not gonna hurt you, I promise,” hands up in submission. “What’s your name?”

“S… Simon. It’s Simon. What the hell are you people!?”

“It’s okay, Simon. My people made a mistake. They didn’t mean to hurt you.” Raphael made his body level with the young boy. His eyes gazed into Simon’s and formed a connection. Encanto is what it was called. A vampire’s ability to attach and command another being’s mind. He was using Encanto to ensure Simon wouldn’t remember this and possibly blab to the whole of New York that vampires and warlocks existed (Eljah liked to pretend he was doing it for Simon’s well-being and sanity).

They’d flocked the den members back into the hotel and placed Simon outside the alleyway. Raphael and Eljah waited just inside the darkness for confirmation of the mundane’s condition. Simon woke up and stretched as if he’d just risen out of bed, adorable in Eljah’s eyes. Two women called out from afar, Simon giggling while hailing them. He’d successfully made it out safely, thanks to Raphael and Eljah.

Although Eljah was physically on the stairs in the middle of Park Slope, Brooklyn, he mentally found himself locked in a storage room, faded blue lockers lining one wall and frantic scratches clawed into another. The body seemed familiar energetically, wildly pacing between thin red bars and the previous surfaces with a phone raised high. They were attempting to call someone and when the line picked up they exclaimed, “Oh, I thought I’d never utter these words, but thank God it’s you! It’s me, Simon.”

Well… how many Simons do you think live in New York?

“Where are you? Where’s Clary?” The audio was mush to Eljah, but the names and voices were familiar enough to fill in the missing details.

“I don’t know. Some Chinese restaurant, I think?” He stuttered as he tried to explain, frustrating Eljah as he spent more time panicking than looking for clues as to his whereabouts. “This cop Alaric arrested us, but it was a total fake-out! Him and his buddy, they took us- They took us to their hangout and then they told Clary that they’ll kill her if they don’t find the Cup!”

“Just calm down, all right? Tell us what you see!” Simon acknowledged and rushed to the only window near him, jumping on a surface to gaze at a pier below, passing the information on to the caller.

“There’s a ton of water. Uh… I see lockers and…” startling when he found the deep claw marks embedded into the grain of the walls. “I’m in some sort of torture chamber! There are claw marks all over the walls!”

Mumbles sounded over the phone before someone said, “okay, Simon. You need to get more specific. Tell us what you see. Help us find you.”

Simon was growing angry and his aura was bursting into flames of red and gray reminiscent of Eljah’s hair strands. “There’s nothing else that can help—Wait! Hold on, hold on!” Calming substantially as he uncovered stacks of paper in a locker.

Eljah could see the Jade Wolf Chinese Restaurant logo in the middle of an old cocktail guide, vision fading now that’d seen what he needed to, alongside his strength. He was crawling out of his skin, trying to get out of the vision that was no longer of quality. He gasped for air, unknowingly notifying one of the very callers Simon was contacting.

Isabelle heard the gasps and cries, hair flocking to her back as she flipped around. Jace was finishing his call with Simon, saying, “we’re on our way.” As desperate as Izzy was to collect her newfound friends, a stranger in need also warranted help.

“Guys, something’s wrong. Do you hear that??” She brought attention to the croaks outside the alleyway. She took off, Jace and Alec desperately chasing after her after sharing an eye roll. When breaching the corner, Izzy did not expect to see Eljah seized up on the concrete stairs, but as she did, she cried out for him.

“Eljah? Eljah, what’s wrong?” She felt his forehead and neck before turning his head lightly, anything to diagnose his fit. Jace and Alec stood with drawn eyebrows and unintentionally flared noses. Izzy’s alarm grew as she pushed his hair out of the way and stared into his silver eyes.

“I’ve never seen something like this. Someone help me, I don’t know what to do!” Isabelle shouted. Both men rushed forward to help with Jace flocking to his back to support his head and Alec replacing Izzy in front of him.

Eljah genuinely believed he’d activated his luck rune at some point today, because the very shadowhunters supporting his body now was a one in a million blessing. Most notably, Alec was brushing the hair back off Eljah’s face, whispering his name repeatedly. It sounded heavenly coming from Alec’s mouth. He never particularly liked his name, but it sounded beautiful when Alec said it.

“Hey, hey,” he comforted, “what’s wrong? Tell me what’s wrong.”

“Do we need to get Magnus?” Isabelle asked. Eljah shook his head harshly, catching his breath now that his muscles were releasing. His head dropped forward and the silver clouds dispersed.

Stele.

Stele.

Stele.

He kept trying, forming the words, but unsure if they came out right.

“Where’s your healing rune?” Alec pressed on, understanding the mumbles between sputtering coughs. Eljah rolled up his left sleeve and extended his arm. Alec rested a firm hand on the man’s right shoulder as he activated the rune that burned as usual. “I got him, guys. Go get Simon and Clary.” He ordered. It was getting dark and Eljah already felt overexposed like an old polaroid, thankful Alec was staying.

All shadowhunters smelled like hints of sunlight to Eljah, but Alec had a touch of the freshest linen and a basic cologne. It stabilized him further as the healing kicked in. The other two shadowhunters ran off together, Eljah wondering how Isabelle could move so fast in heels.

“You should go with them,” Eljah told Alec. “I don’t know how far the restaurant is, and Clary and Simon are more important than me.” Alec looked puzzled and froze.

“How did you know that? Eljah, how did you know where they were?”

“Heard you… from over here.” He lied poorly. “Endurance is on my lower back. Pass your stele, please.” Trying to maintain composure despite embarrassing himself. Alec conceded and huffed, retrieving his phone from his commonly worn jacket and subduing the stele into the outstretched hand. Endurance didn’t sting like Iratze did, and Eljah surrendered his body to lie back on the stairs.

“I’m calling Magnus.” At the sound of ringing, Eljah shot up, forgetting how to act and reaching for the phone. Alec was faster. Much faster.

“No! We have plans later. I don’t want to ruin them…” Alec looked considerate but didn’t respond.

“Magnus. I need your help.”

“What’s wrong, Alexander?”

“I don’t really know. Eljah collapsed and was seizing. I just- are you home?” Alec guided Eljah back down without looking by the hand still connecting to his shoulder.

“Send me your location. I’ll portal as close as I can.”

Alec said nothing more, and the two ended the call. Beeps sounded from the phone and Alec sighed once again. Eljah was staring up at him, unsure of what to do, and Alec shared the same sentiment as he looked down. Time passed before Alec realized he was still holding onto the smaller man and it was like he’d touched sunlit metal with how fast he pulled back. He mumbled sorry before moving to sit further away. Disappointment filled Eljah, and the two waited together for Magnus’ arrival.

"Having a picnic was a great idea!"

"This place is so beautiful!" Luna was hopping like a bunny on Matteo's arm as they were walking back from a park were they had had a picnic with Nina and Gastón.

They had arrived in Italy from France four days ago, and after a couple of days in Rome, Ambar and Simon had gone to visit some Italian friend Ambar had made at law school who lived in Sardinia, so Matteo had decided to take Luna, Gastón and Nina to his mother's home town, Pietrapertosa which was located in Basilicata.

Having a picnic for the lunch had been a great idea because it really made them walk around the whole town. Now they were walking towards his Nonna's house since they were having dinner with her.

Matteo felt a bit guilty that he hadn't been here in years, but life had come in the way. He still talked with his Nonna often, but actually hadn't seen her in a while.

"This church is really beautiful," they were walking past a small chapel that was surrounded by graveyards. Matteo had not even noticed until Nina pointed it out. They stopped and he looked up.

Oh... they were here... He hadn't even thought about it, but of course, there had always been a chance that they would end up in this place accidentally.

"Matteo, are you alright?" Luna asked him, and he got shooked back into reality.

"Yeah, I am."

"Matteo... is this the..." Gastón started asking

"Yes, it is," Matteo answered quickly, looking at the graveyard, "You know what? I should show you." He walked up and opened the gate to the graveyard. "Come on."

The three others followed Matteo who led the through the yard until they were in front of a big white tombstone.

And under it: Lucia Florencia Balsano (Astrella) 1969 - 2009

"Matteo," Luna asked with a small voice, "Your Mother's grave`? It is here?"

"Yes. She wanted to be buried here," Mateo said looking down at the grave, "I don't come here enough, even Dad comes once a year. But I guess it is the time for her to meet you." He looked at Luna.

Luna tuned around and walked toward a blossoming apple tree that was a couple of meters away from them. She picked a flower from the tree and placed it on the grave.

"Matteo! Mi sei mancata tanto tesoro! Mio caro nipote! " a short elderly woman had run up to Matteo and hugged her tightly as soon as they had entered a small garden that surrounded Matteo's grandmother's house. Luna had literally jumped out of the way.

"Nonna, è passato troppo tempo! Anche tu mi sei mancato. Hai un aspetto incredibile!"

After a really long hug Matteo was let go off and he turned towards Luna and the others. "Nonna, I hope you remember that I wasn't coming alone. They don't speak any Italian." Mateo said switching back to Spanish.

"Don't you worry about darlings!" Matteo's grandmother said with, heavily accented, but otherwise correct Spanish. "Call me Viviana. It has been a while since I have been able to show off my Spanish skills."

"So, this is my best friend Gatón and his fiancee Nina," Matteo introduced Nina and Gastón first and Luna felt suddenly nerves rising in her. This was the first time she met anyone from Matteo's family outside of Alexander, Sofia and Flor. "And this is my girlfriend Luna."

"...Hi," Luna said awkwardly and was offering her hand for a handshake but Viviana pulled her in a crushing hug. "Matteo, lei è una bella fregatura. Dove sei riuscito a trovare questa ragazza carina?"

"How long have you been together?" After Viviana had released her, Luna realized that the next question had been directed at her.

"Five years."

"And no ring yet? Matteo �� meglio che ti sbrighi!"

Luna laughed awkwardly and she saw Matteo throw Gastón a panicked look briefly.

"Okay, Nonna, everything in due time," Matteo responded quickly.

"Do you live alone?" Luna asked Viviana as they were all sitting around the table.

"No," Vivian laughed, "this is a small town. My husband is gone, but I have sisters, cousins and people who are not related to me, so I am never alone. Also, I might be an old lady, but I still know how to use these modern gadgets."

"How is Flor?" Viviana turned towards Matteo, "I haven't been able tp reach her in a while."

"Actually, Gastón and Nina know that better than me," Matteo responded, "They actually were at Oxford same time as her. Flor's boyfriend was Gastón's roommate."

"Oh, I see. You have really educated friends then"

Ode to Enchanted Light by Pablo Neruda

Under the trees light has dropped from the top of the sky, light like a green latticework of branches, shining on every leaf, drifting down like clean white sand.

A cicada sends its sawing song high into the empty air.

The world is a glass overflowing with water.

Consuelo Kanaga’s black and white photograph captures a dazzling, yet fleeting moment from everyday life. Three textured glasses cast shadows whose patterns are almost kaleidoscopic in effect. We can imagine Kanaga passing by her kitchen table, as she is brought to a halt to take a closer look at, and ultimately to photograph, the simple beauty generated by the play of light and everyday objects. The close-up scale of this image emulates the singularizing framing techniques deployed by Surrealist photographers, who also took parts of everyday life and blew them up in the photographic frame, thereby encouraging their viewers to look at life around us from a different angle. It is a way of saying: Here, take a closer look. Viewing the world with wonder, along with the joy that this act brings, are encapsulated in Pablo Neruda’s poem Ode to Enchanted Light. The speaker observes the way light passes through trees and creates enchanting patterns. He not only observes, but feels the beauty in the simple details of life, from the way light falls from the sky, to the sheen of leaves, to the buzzing of cicadas. Approaching life through such a hopeful lens evokes a glass-half-full perspective. In fact, the speaker is so hopeful that he believes “The world is/a glass overflowing/with water.” I think Kanaga would have felt the same way.

Easter Wings By George Herbert

Easter Wings by George Herbet and Martin Bach’s flower vase from the Brooklyn Museum’s Decorative Arts collection reveal the interrelationship between form and function. In Easter Wings, Herbert strategically varies the line length to create an image that enhances the meaning of the poem; when you turn the poem on its side, it resembles the wings of a bird, of which are symbolic of the atonement of Jesus Christ. In doing so, the author is not only telling us his message, but he is showing it visually as well. Similarly, the vase takes the visual form of its function. Its floral design amplifies the meaning of the object, as the vase is meant to hold flowers. In both instances, we see how aesthetic properties of a work echo the meaning and function of the work itself.

I am warm, moist soil  I am a single supple stalk  I draw my life  all the way up into corollas of wild berries on the roadside 

I am amazed at  a breast of water welling  to flow into the inlet of a muddy rice paddy  I am amazed at  myself being  hot steam blowing fire and sulfur up  from the bottom of the great ocean, deep indigo.  I am amazed at  the crimson blood flow  covering the earth’s surface in human shape;  I am amazed that it swells as the tides ebb and flow, and gushes out monthly under distant invisible gravity … I am the earth.  I live there, and I am the very same earth. 

In the four billionth year  I have come to know  the eternal cold moon, my other self, my hetero being,  then, for the first time, I am amazed that I am warm mud.

The vivid imagery conjured up by Kiyoko Nagase’s poem is beautifully visualized by Emmi Whitehorse’s painting. The emphasis on deep Earth tones and abstract corporeality in both the poem and the painting really creates an intense metaphysical link between the environment and the self.

Ocean Vuong’s “Seventh Circle of Earth” has persisted as one of the great, affective moments of poetry in my life since I first heard Pádraig Ó Toama’s gorgeous reading and discussion of it on his podcast, Poetry Unbound. I decided to pair Vuong’s poem with Mary Coble’s Untitled 2 (from Note To Self) because both works are urgently immersive into the violence and experience of LGBTQ people in the U.S., and for how each work uses text and physicality to address presence, pain, and erasure. Vuong’s poem is actually footnoted to a quote from a news article about a gay couple murdered in Texas. The page is thus blank, absent of text. The reader has to sink below the main stage, the accepted space of word and story, to find the voices of this couple and the depth of their story’s tenderness, eroticism, and utter devastation. Coble’s piece foils the structure and effect of Seventh Circle of Earth by taking what was subverted by Vuong—text and the narrative of violence—wholly to the surface. Her photograph captures her own legs tattooed without ink with the names of LGBTQ individuals victimized by hate crimes. I cannot help but think of Franz Kafka’s short story “In the Penal Colony,” in which prisoners’ “sentences'' are inscribed by the needle of a “punishment apparatus” directly onto their bodies. I was struck by how the curator’s note for this photograph describes Coble’s artistic endeavor here as “harrowing.” The needle in Kafka’s short story is indeed called “The Harrow”. The noun harrow is an agricultural tool that combs plowed soil to break up clumps of earth and uproot weeds and clear imperfections. The verb to harrow means to plague, and in the story’s original German the verb for “harrow”, eggen,  is also translated as “to torment”. Kafka and Coble conflate these definitions of “the harrow” in their respective works: they use a needled device, like the true noun definition, as an instrument of torment because of someone else’s idea of punishment and justice. Here, violence is brought to the surface, intimate in as much as we are brought right up to the artist’s skin and into the presence of her and her community’s pain. Together, one can see how each creator physicalizes their respective artistic space to tell the stories of LGBTQ people, of what is tender and harrowing, below the surface and written into the skin.

I have shabby dreams for you   of some vague freedom   I have never known.   Baby   I don't want you hungry or thirsty   or out in the cold.   and I don't want the frost   to kill your fruit   before it ripens.   I can see a sunny place  Life exploding green.   I can see your bright, bronze skin at ease with all the flowers   and the centipedes.   I can hear laughter,   not grown from ridicule   And words not prompted   by ego or greed or jealousy.   I see a world where hatred   has been replaced by love.   and ME replaced by WE   And I can see a world replaced                                       where you,   building and exploring,   strong and fulfilled,   will understand.   And go beyond my little shabby dreams. 

This poem is featured in Assata Shakur’s memoir, Assata: An Autobiography. It details her hope for a better world that  her daughter can grow up in. This poem is positioned in the book when Shakur is facing increasing prosecution as a result of her  activism and affiliations with the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation army. Being written more than 30 years after this picture  was taken, the poem summons me to think about the trauma that many Black women face and how much of that trauma gets passed  down to their children. The black and white photo of a mother and daughter provides a nice visual to the poem. “The image of a Black  mother and child sitting on their luggage reflects the little-discussed history of segregated transportation in the northern United States. Through the 1940s, Penn Station officials assigned Black travelers seats in Jim Crow cars on southbound trains” (Brooklyn Museum). The photograph of train passengers waiting outside of Manhattan’s Pennsylvania Station especially echoes the verse “I don’t want you  hungry or thirsty or out in the cold.” The overall optimistic tone of Shakur’s poem alters our relationship to the image as we imagine  the mother pictured above hoping for the exact same things

I retch as a mass of sinew lies between my lips.  The sensation is unbearable.  Fortunately, the jar of flies has gone missing again. 

Slowly, surely, and yet never sure at all,  the quiet of buzzing rings through the in-between. 

It is a symphony wrought from blood and bone. 

Saliva drips from bleeding, hungry gums,  And the crunch of glass echoes the grinding of molars.

If I proffered a sanguine smile, would masticated shards look like teeth?  Would they gleam just as prettily?  

The flies ring,  and the rot calls.

This excerpt comes from Appendix C of Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red, a novel in verse. A translator and classicist herself, Carson mixes fact with fiction in her unconventional retelling of the myth of Geryon and Hercules, beginning with a roundabout introduction to the poet Stesichoros. Autobiography presents a captivating example of recent Queer projects that take up Classical material as their basis. A fascination with the Classical past has pervaded our modern conception of sexual identity politics, down to the very etymology of the word “lesbian.” In this fascination, I see the same desire to capture Classical imagery as cultural heritage which has also pervaded American museums, albeit with significantly different aims. The fresco pictured above comes to mind, which passed through many collectors and was even purchased by the museum before anyone pegged it as a modern piece—not an original Roman fresco. John D. Cooney, a 20th century curator of our Egyptian, Classical, and Ancient Near Eastern Art collection, wrote that “the unclad and somewhat winsome charms of the lady [probably] diverted objective glances.” Both in the case of the fresco and Carson’s novel, the “unclad and somewhat winsome charms” of the Classical past shape and reshape our understanding of history.

While the author of the poem speaks about animals, their words can also speak on behalf of the erasure of indigenous peoples in South America. Much like the jaguar, indigenous traditions and culture are very important to life in South America. Despite their marginalization, Indigenous peoples throughout the Andes used coca leaves to help with the altitude. The use and cultivation of coca are criminalized throughout most of South America despite it being essential to indigenous cultures. This vessel was used to contain lime which would activate the coca leaves.  Much like the jaguar, indigenous traditions are also faced with endangerment despite being woven into the fabric that is Latin America. Through the opposite man and woman figures, the vessel shows the duality that is important to the Quimbaya people which is still relevant to Colombians today.

Con la mención del jaguar, se puede entender en el poema que la cultura y las tradiciones de las personas que son indígenas son sumamente importantes para la vida en Sudamérica. A pesar de su marginación, los indígenas en Los Andes utilizan la hoja de coca para ayudar en la altura de las montañas. El uso y el cultivo de la hoja de coca fue criminalizado (penalizado) a través de Sudamérica, aunque su uso para los indígenas era vital y esencial para su cultura. Este recipiente que se utiliza contiene limón lo que activa la hoja de la coca. Similarmente al jaguar, las tradiciones de los indígenas siempre estaban en peligro aunque estuvieran entrelazadas en las telas de lo que sería Latinoamérica. A través del hombre opuesto y las figuras de mujeres, el recipiente muestra la dualidad de lo que es importante para las personas que son Quimbaya, algo que todavía hoy es relevante para los Colombianos.

Awwww All these names will make Alexander all flustered and feel warm inside, especially baby boy.

Love is a petname that is better be used only if its true feelings because Alexander doesn't like to have his heart being played with.

Well this was a LOOOOOONG time request from my Wattpad account but I finally got some motivation to write and finish this fic. Now I talked with the requestor about this and some changes were made, originally this was gonna involve Criminal minds cast but I had barely watched the show at the time so I talked with them and they agreed to have this be a SPN X LUCIFER cast crossover. “Okay guys; here we are back at the Supernatural set ready to start filming the 2nd half of season 14. Before I get into the special prank on Alex day I want to first send a very special thanks to the Lucifans for the #SaveLucifer and thank Netflix for renewing a season 4 and 5 of Lucifer.  Yes I am a fan of that show as well. I mean I’ve got to my dad plays the famed Devil himself. No, no, no, no, no I’m joking. I watch the show because I really love what they did with it. The writing is phenomenal and the cast is super friendly. They’re like my second family next these guys here at Supernatural.”

I spoke through my Youtube channel streaming live.  I could already see comments popping up along my livestream. Comments like ‘YASS LUCIFERXSPN SUPPORT’ or Winchester sister stans Lucifer.

“Yes I do thank you. Now for the moment you’ve all waited for. I’ve got the plastic wrap, the super glue, feathers, and fan. And of course the star of this prank on Alex, my baby boy Shadow.” I then presented my black German Shepherd who was lying on Alex’s trailer couch. “You ready to prank Alex boy?” he tilted his head to the side. “You ready to prank him?” he let out a bark and I cooed. “Good boy!” I flipped my camera back around and said. “Now Jared kindly set up the camera just a bit ago so I will transition to that in just a little while. For now I’m going to set up the door so please enjoy this fast forward montage of me getting the prank set up.”

I spread the super glue all around the plastic wrapping and tapped it across Alex’s trailer door so that when he would run right into it, he would get trapped with the plastic wrapping before I would attack with the pillow filled with feathers.

“Okay everything’s all set up. Now for the final touch, c’mon boy up on the bed.” He got off the couch and into Alex’s bed and just lay there at the foot of it. “Good boy.” I opened the trailer door and waited for Alex to come around.  Once I saw him walking alongside Misha, I cried out. “ALEX! ALEX! SHADOW’S TAKING A SHIT ON YOUR BED!!”

“What!?”

“I’m not kidding I was walking him and he just ran in here and literally shit on your bed! Bad dog!”

“Shadow! Shadow! Damnit Shadow!” Alex then ran up and just like I hopped, he slammed right into the plastic wrap and fell right to the ground.  I then pelted him with the pillow till his entire face was covered with feathers.

“BOOM SUCKA!!! That’ll teach you to eat my big cookie.” I told him.

“Okay maybe I deserved that.”

“Wow (y/n), all this for a cookie?” Misha said as he helped Alex back up on his feet.

“Misha you don’t understand. Those cookies were my mum’s special recipe. Plus she makes them so big that you can eat it in the space of a week. I was saving the last bit of it and then this guy decides it’s a good idea to eat the last of it.” I said pointing to Alex.

“You know….one of these days. We’re gonna get you back. Everyone that you’ve pranked, we’re gonna get you.” Alex spoke as he coughed out trying to get the feathers out of his mouth.

“The day that happens is the day J2(I/l) turns on each other. And the boys and I have been doing this for a long, long time.” I sassed as I snapped my finger and Shadow hopped off Alex’s bed and we left the trailer.

Little bit about myself; the names (Y/n) Ellis, the last name sound familiar? Yep you thought right. Tom Ellis aka Lucifer Morningstar is my father.  He and I have been in the acting business together for a good amount of years.  In fact he’s helped me when it came to running lines or dealing with the pressures of the acting life, especially since I started off as a child actor at the age of 5.

I had a few small roles, but when I was just 9 years old a role on a little show called Supernatural came knocking at my door.  As a young British girl I was worried that I wouldn’t get it because this was an American tv show and I had to speak with an American accent.  But thanks to a good dialect coach, and 2 test screenings with the boys to see if we were a fit, I got to play the role of Sarah Winchester, the younger half-sister of Sam and Dean who was cursed with witch powers.

But instead of killing her, Sam and Dean actually take her in and she uses her magic for good instead of evil.  For years the Supernatural cast didn’t just become an ordinary job, it was like being home, we became a family.  Jared and Jensen were like the big brothers I never had (even though they were around my dad’s age).

When things got too tough around set, J2 always found a way to make me smile and laugh. And as the years passed, Misha came on board followed by the 2 Marks, Ruth, Brianna and Kim, Osric, Rob and Richard, and now finally Alexander Calvert.  The Supernatural family is a tight bond and we all send out a powerful message that Family don’t end in blood, and to Always Keep Fighting when things got bad.

Then when season 11 of my show was being filmed, my dad had gotten the role of Lucifer Morningstar in Fox’s new tv series “Lucifer” which was basically the story of the devil taking a vacation from Hell and he ends up working with the LAPD alongside a clever detective named Chloe Decker.

When Lucifer exploded every time I went to conventions, fans always ask me questions about potential crossovers or what I thought of the show.  And truthfully I loved it.  In fact whenever I would wrap on my time on a season, I took the hour and 45 minute drive where they filmed Lucifer and spend time with my dad and the Lucifer cast.

Lauren, Aimee and Lesley became my partners in crime when it came to the subtle pranks on the Luci cast or even my dad.  Aimee and I are always making Instagram videos of each other acting like complete nutjobs, she’s like the older sister I’ve always wanted (since I am the eldest of my three sisters).

But that’s my life, and if you were to ask me if I could trade it away for anything else, I would tell you hell no (no pun intended).

After getting Shadow back into my trailer, I decided to see if my dad was willing to talk. I grabbed my I-Pad and went over to Facetime and clicked my dad’s name (of course I added the devil emoji beside his name).  It rang about five times before I finally got an answer.

“There’s my little She-devil.” He answered with a smirk.

“Hey dad.” I said with a smile.

“Aimee saw your prank on that Alex chap.”

“She like it?”

“Mini Ellis you are a she-devil genius!” Aimee soon came into the frame. “You got to show me how that brilliant mind of yours works.”

“Guess I learned from two of the very best. I know exactly how to push buttons but not go overly extreme that it hurts someone’s soul. I’m not completely soulless like Jared is when it comes to pranks.”

“I still can’t believe he actually cut one of his credit cards. That’s super low.” She said.

“I know. I’ve been trying to get him to ease back and not go quite extreme. So far he hasn’t done it knock on wood.”

“Anyways you two, what brings on this call my dove?” my dad asked.

“Just wanted to call and see how you were doing. How’s season 4 coming along?”

“Great. Everything is great. Thanks to the Lucifans, and the Supernatural family.” My dad said.

“No sweat. You’re my dad. I’m still pissed that FOX could just cancel your show like that. And the way they would’ve ended it. God that’s literally the worst cliffhanger ever!”

“Tell me about it.” Aimee groaned.

“But it’s all fixed now. Netflix will take good care of us now. Plus we don’t have as much restrictions as FOX gave us.” My dad teased.  I then heard a knock at my trailer door which made Shadow raise his head up from his bed and his attention turned toward the door.

“Hang on dad, who is it?!”

“It’s Jared! C’mon kiddo they need us on set now.”

“Alright I’ll be there in a minute.” I turned back to my dad and Aimee and my dad said to me.

“Go on, we’ll catch up later.”

“Alright dad. Give my love to the rest of the cast.”

“You already have my love mini Ellis.” Aimee said.

“Love you Aims!”

“Alright darling love you. Stay safe and have fun filming your next season.” The two of them blew me a kiss goodbye and I waved bye to them and the Facetime shut off. I put my phone aside and quickly refilled Shadow’s water bowl before I took off and raced towards the set.

Although unbeknownst to both Jared and Jensen something was waiting for them.  As I walked in on the set I sat down at the spot where my character Sarah was to sit for this upcoming scene.

“Okay guys on cue marks. Cue lighting and roll sound.” I got into the mindset of Sarah and took the prop book in my hands as our director called out, “Okay cue Jensen and Jared. And…..action.” it was then Jensen came down the staircase while Jared came out from the back corridor.

“Hey, so any word from Jodie?” Jensen asked as Dean to Jared.

“No not yet. Hey Sar, any luck with the research?” Jared asked me as Sam.

“Not a damn thing. God even for a witch like me I still can’t figure out the spell to get us to that other place. I’m sorry guys I may be strong, but I’m not Rowena strong.”

“No, no it’s alright. It’s okay. We’ll……find another way.” Then Jared and Jensen took their seats before suddenly jolting upwards and letting out girlish screams of shock and pain.

“CUT!!!” our director called out.

“The hell was that!?!” Jensen proclaimed.

“Oh thank god I thought it was just me.” Jared sighed with relief.  I kept my poker face up as I said to them.

“What happened just now?”

“Something shocked us. I don’t know what but whatever it was, it should never have shocked me back there. My butt does not deserve that kind of treatment!” he looked around the cushioned seat until he found some sort of electronic shock pad. It was slightly smaller than the cushioned pad and as soon as Jensen took hold of it and pressed a certain button, it caused another shock to run through his arm as he swore out loud and shake his arm.

“Uhh Jensen why would you do that?” I asked him.

“I don’t know I needed to see if it was real or not don’t judge me!”

“How the hell did these even get here?” asked Jared.

“No idea.” Jensen said.  I covered my smile as I tried to act inconspicuous but that’s when the two of them looked at me. “You did this?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I said as I stood up and strutted out of the room sassily to run into Misha and I told him. “Your revenge plot has been successfully played out.”

“I knew I could count on you (n/n). Thanks.”

“No problem, but just know Misha all things come at a price with me. Pranking the kings don’t come without consequence.”

“I know, I know. But still I thank you for doing this for me. That’ll teach Jared to put old cheese in my pillow.”  I patted his arm before leaving him to reset the scene again.

Weeks passed and filming continued on up until I was finally done with my scenes which meant that I was now allowed to travel on up to the Lucifer set and pop in and say hello.  After bidding everyone goodbye until July, I got into the car and my driver Tommy drove me on up towards the studio where my dad and the rest of the Lucifer family were filming.

After finally arriving on the set, I saw Lauren and Aimee out and about with a Starbucks cup in their hands.  As soon as they saw my car, they immediately waved.  I rolled down my window and said.

“What up my Luci sistas!”

“Ahhh mini-Ellis!” Aimee proclaimed.  Once the car stopped, I stepped out and I raced towards her and she met me in the middle as the two of us embraced each other tightly, rocking aggressively from side to side.  “Where’s big Shadow? You usually bring him with you whenever you’re done with shooting.”

“Well for some reason Misha wanted to keep him around set. Guess he must’ve needed the fluffy protection from Jared and Jensen after the prank I pulled on them a few weeks back.”

“What’d you do to them?” asked Lauren.

“Just put a shock pad cushion underneath their chairs. Misha told me to do it to get back at Jared for putting old cheese in his pillow.”

“Wow those guys are relentless huh?” said Aimee.

“Yep. But enough of that now, let’s get going. I wanna watch you guys film some stuff.”

“Alright! C’mon kiddo let’s go.” Lauren wrapped her arm around me before playfully giving me a noogie while guiding me onwards to the set.

I greeted my Lucifer family like D.B, Kevin, Lesley-Ann, Rachael, and of course young Scarlett (ever since the show I officially adopted her as my younger sister).

“So, have you guys seen my dad anywhere?” I asked.

“Last we saw him he was leaving his trailer for costume and makeup.” Aimee said.

“Perfect.”

“What have you got in mind she-devil?” asked Lauren with a grin.

“Ohhh not much.” I grinned as I walked towards the costume and makeup trailers.

Once I got there, I had spotted my dad just getting out from the costume trailer in the full Lucifer suit.  I grinned mischievously and slowly stalked towards him.  This was something that I used to always do to him when I was a little girl, it’s been awhile but I hope I still got it.  Like a tigress on the prowl I stalked behind my dad silent and carefully.

Whenever he turned around, I would hide behind anything I could whether it was the side of a trailer/tent, or even one of the many gold carts/motorbikes.  Then when he would resume his walk, I trailed behind him once again.  Closer and closer I got till finally I was within strike range.

The mighty huntress has cornered her prey.

I then trotted forward before leaping up but I was foiled when my dad turned around and managed to catch me and spin me around for a moment in his arms.

“Thought you’d sneak up on my again huh my little tigress? After all these years I finally caught you red handed.”

“Took you over 20 years but no time like the present eh?” my dad smirked down at me, the smirk that I had inherited from him, and said as he booped my nose.

“I just know when my daughter feels a little extra cheeky.” He bopped my nose as he said ‘cheeky’ which made me playfully stick my tongue out at him. “And put that tongue away young lady we are not a snake.”

“Wrong. Don’t you remember I got sorted into Slytherin when we went to Harry Potter world.”

“Yes I do recall that. But that’s still no excuse. Stick that tongue out at me again and I’ll give you a good whopping, do I make myself clear.”

“Yes father.” I submitted.  He pecked my forehead before releasing me.

“So, you’ve finished with your filming?”

“Yep. Managed to wrap up a little early, at least for me.”

“Now I’ve been hearing a lot of rumors about you potentially branching off and getting your own spinoff series?”

“Well I don’t like to brag but it’s still a rumor. Not even I can confirm it. Besides, who knows if the CW will allow it. I mean don’t get me wrong the other two sub-series I didn’t agree with but Wayward Sisters, I would’ve LOVED to see that become something. Maybe have Sarah make a few surprise appearances.”

“Well, if the CW don’t allow it, maybe Netflix will. You never know. I could put in a good word for you.”

“Thanks dad.”

“Tom! Hey Tom! Susan needs you in makeup stat. You’re shooting in ten.” One of the make artists came racing up to us.

“Oh fu—sorry about that Johnny.” My dad wrapped an arm around my shoulders and the two of us walked towards the makeup trailer so that he could get ready.

After doing a quick touch up on my dad, the two of us left for the LAPD set and everyone was already running around getting to their marks or getting the cameras rolling.  I sat right next to the director Sherwin as he was calling for cameras to focus and start rolling.  Finally he called action and I got to sit and watch the new Netflix: Lucifer finally be filmed.

It was a long day of shooting and filming but it was a very productive day.  I even got to learn about directing since (spoiler alert! I get to direct an episode this season of Supernatural!).  I was currently right now sitting with my dad sipping a cup of tea.

“Now I know that one episode that witches have familiars. If Sarah were to have a familiar, which pet would she have and who would you want to play that familiar?” I hummed.

“Well. No offense to the women but most of the time when a new female comes on Supernatural she always ends up being a bitch. With the exception of Kim, Bri, Ruthie, Felica, and the rest of the Wayward sisters. So I’d have to say Sarah would want a male familiar. And yes while I do love dogs and would KILL to have Shadow actually be in front of the camera, I think she’d prefer a cat. Now for the actor to play him. Now don’t laugh but—this is my fantasy dream cast…..”

“Oh just get on with it will you little missy! Stop droning on!” my dad whined. I mimicked his whining before I finally admitted.

“Gwilym Lee okay!”

“The Welsh actor from that Midsomer murders series you used to watch?”

“Yeah, why not? I think he’d make a perfect cat familiar. Wise, loyal, good fighter. And—not that bad looking if I may say.”

“Alright down girl. I swear you and Aimee have been fawning over actors far too much.”

“Then you do not want to see me with the young Wayward sisters. We’re a lot worse. Plus it gets awkward when they start talking about you. Especially when it involves the Lucifer cast.”

“Oh my god.” He groaned.

“I know right!? It’s bad enough I hear from the fans about how much of a ‘thirsty dad’ you are. But now I have to hear it at work!” before my dad could say anything else, Lesley came running in with a worried look on her face. “Whoa Les, where’s the fire at?”

“You gotta call the Supernatural set (y/n).” she panted out.

“Why what’s going on?”

“I don’t know something about Shadow.” Without hesitation I took my phone out and dialed Misha’s number.  It rang and rang and as it kept ringing I grumbled.

“C’mon Misha pick up your bloody phone already!”

‘Hello?’

“Misha what’s going on!? What happened to my son!?”

‘I’m sorry (y/n) Jared was eating some M&M’s earlier and he left the table for one second and the next thing he saw was Shadow eating the M&M’s he had managed to knock down on the floor!’

“WHAT!?!?!?!?”

‘Just come by over here, he’s been whimpering and we don’t know the contact information to the vet.’

“Okay I’ll be there as soon as I can. Try to make him as comfortable for me as possible. Okay! Tell him mummy’s on her way!”

‘Okay I will. And (y/n). Hurry!’ I hung up the phone and raced off.

“Whoa, whoa mini-Ellis where are you off too in such a hurry?” Kevin said as he and Aimee were walking back from the catering (after I had noticed the chocolate doughnut in Aimee’s hand).

“Shadow’s sick! Ate M&M’s. I gotta go!” I couldn’t even form a proper sentence as I raced outside and phoned my driver to hurry the fuck back to the set and drive me back to the Supernatural set.

Thankfully, he was right outside and the second I jumped right on in, I banged on the back window and ordered him to drive and soon he was off.  Oh Shadow baby hang in there baby boy!

Finally after what felt like an eternity (I don’t know why the driver had taken the long way around. Said it was fucking traffic or something like that). But before the car could even come to a complete stop, I jumped out of the car and raced towards the building calling out Shadow’s name.

I quickly raced into the main Supernatural set to see that it was completely empty.

“Shadow!? Shadow! Here boy!” I whistled.  Just hearing the way Misha had talked on the phone it made me really worried about my baby boy’s health.  And now just not seeing him come on command when he’s supposed to, got me really anxious.

I walked further through the main set (which was the map room of the bunker) when I felt myself slightly trip forward and I looked down to see a tripwire.  Oh shit.

SPLASH! I jumped as I let out a shriek when a small water balloon fell right at my feet.  A split second later another dropped on the other side of me but still close enough to my feet.  I jumped two more times as two more water balloons splashed right by me.

“Really guys? If you’re gonna do something like that at least have good aim.” But I was unaware of the enormous water balloon that was now starting to roll down. When I looked up, my heart sunk as I slowly let out a scream and soon I was drenched.

But it wasn’t water.  Well normal water anyway, when I had looked at myself I had seen that I was now covered head to toe in the famed fake blood the makeup artists make from corn syrup, chocolate syrup and food coloring.

My breathing sharpened and I growled out.

“J2. Are without a doubt. The lowest most vile Americans to EVER WALK THE PLANET!!!” This was my favorite shirt and now the boys ruined it.  Plus do you know how long it takes to get fake blood out of your hair? Believe me it’s not pretty. Hours upon hours of just brushing through one section of hair.

Soon enough the entire cast came out laughing and clapping but what was shocking was that the Lucifer cast also came out smiling and clapping along.

“We got you good kid!” Misha laughed.

“You—you all were……”

“About time we finally dethroned the Prank Queen. You’ve been stealing our thunder for too long kid.” Jensen said.

“And thanks to your dad and the rest of the Lucifer cast, they gave us the time to set all this up.” Jared said as he held his phone up probably recording the whole thing.  I turned to my dad and hissed.

“Et tu Papa?”

“Sorry darling. They were convincing. Plus you’ve been going a little overboard with the pranks. You even placed a dead fish in my car.” Dad said.

“Or itching powder in my underwear drawer last year during season 3.” DW added.

“And hacking my Instagram professing love for the DCEU when you know I’m a Marvel girl.” Aimee said.

“And of course you can’t forget your recent little prank. The electric cushions.” Jared said.

“So we all came together and finally got you back.” Alex said smugly.

“How’s it feel now? You just got Carrie’d!” Lauren proclaimed.

“You all are so lucky I’m not a real witch or a telepath. Cause otherwise you’d all be screwed right now!” I spat out the fake blood that was starting to seep into my mouth.  “But I’ll admit. Only I could come up with something like this. I’m impressed. Especially since it was a crossover team effort.”

Both castmates from each show came around me and that’s when all the selfies and self-promotion of dethroning the “Prank Queen” has officially happened.  Of course I couldn’t help but chase after J2 as well as my dad so that I could smear the blood on them as payback for what they did to me.

Yep the life of an actress on Supernatural who happens to be the daughter of the current ‘hot’ Lucifer Morningstar, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.  So while the entire cast and my family got their victory out of the way, I began plotting my next ultimate prank.

Summary: July 11, 1804. Aaron Burr is pulled from the dueling ground before he can speak to a mortally wounded Alexander Hamilton. But an unexpected late night summons gives him a second chance to make peace with his one time friend.

Hamilton rose on his tip toes and arched backwards. Watching him fall reminded Burr distantly of the ballet he’d seen recently. Time seemed slower than normal. The sun glittered off the Hudson and filtered through the trees to create patterns on the rock face before him, giving the whole scene a dream-like quality, assisted by the cloud of smoke creating a haze around his vision.

Judge Pendleton dove forward to try to catch Hamilton but didn’t make it in time. Hamilton hit the ground hard, whimpering in pain. Burr’s eyes trailed down to Hamilton’s torso, to the long, ink stained fingers grasping desperately at Hamilton’s belly, just below his ribs. A red stain appeared on the waistcoat; red dribbled between the fingers; red splattered onto the dirt. So much red.

Pendleton had made it to Hamilton finally. He knelt in the dirt and hooked his arms under Hamilton’s armpits to haul him up. Hamilton’s lips parted in a silent scream as he was adjusted to sit up in Pendleton’s arms. Those familiar eyes opened, rolling over the New York skyline behind Burr before coming to stop on Burr himself. Burr met his gaze and suddenly felt reality assert itself.

He’d done this. He’d shot Hamilton.

Hamilton looked frightened and confused, and Burr felt the sudden, intense urge to comfort him. He took a step forward. Another. Something caught his arm, stopped his progress. Van Ness was tugging at him, muttering something. Burr tried to pull his arm away, but Van Ness tugged harder.

“I have to go to him,” Burr tried to explain.

“We have to go, sir,” Van Ness replied.

Burr looked back at Hamilton, lying in the dirt. This wasn’t what he’d wanted. Hamilton met his gaze again and Burr tried to communicate. He wasn’t sure what he was trying to say, exactly, just that he needed Hamilton to know. Another tear tracked down Hamilton’s face, but he smiled weakly, tremulously.

He suddenly heard shouting coming up the path.

“Now, sir,” Van Ness whispered harshly in his ear. An umbrella whipped before his face, blocking Hamilton from view as Van Ness tugged with more urgency. He staggered down the path, Van Ness tugging him along.

Had that been real? Had he done that? He thought suddenly of Eliza, who’d been a friend to his darling wife. He thought of Philip, who he’d known since he was a toddler, dead now from a duel just like this one. He thought of Angelica, who’d been a friend to his daughter since the two were crawling in diapers on the carpet. What had he just done?

“I need to go back,” Burr blurted out, stopping before the waiting skiff.

“Get in, sir,” Van Ness pressed, bodily pushing him towards the boat.

“I need to speak to him.” He dug in his heels, refusing to budge. Hamilton was hurt. He needed to help him.

Van Ness seemed to realize that Burr wouldn’t move until he’ d had his way, because he offered, “I’ll go check on him. Just, get in the boat. I’ll be right back.”

Burr stayed on land as Van Ness disappeared back up the path. Burr remembered walking that way not even a hour ago. The sun hadn’t risen yet. He’d been so angry. This had all been a mistake, a terrible mistake.

Van Ness returned quickly, shaking his head at Burr as he came back down the path. “He’s unconscious, sir. I’m not even sure if he was breathing. There’s no speaking to him now. We need to go.”

He was herded onto the boat.

He spent the return journey staring at his hands.

The knock on the door startled Burr badly enough that the book he’d been staring at fell out of his hands. A glance at the clock confirmed it was well after eleven o’clock, much too late for respectable company. Ill-news could be the only possible reason, and a sour feeling rose up from his stomach. He knew the only news someone may be compelled to deliver this late—Alexander Hamilton succumbing to his injuries.

He took his time walking to the door, as if putting off the report could make it any less true. When he opened it, a servant stood before him with a letter held out. “A message from General Hamilton, sir.”

Surely a slip of the tongue, but one that made Burr wince all the same. “You mean regarding General Hamilton.”

“No, sir. A message from him. He penned it himself not half an hour ago. I watched him do it,” the messenger corrected.

Burr’s eyes widened. He reached out and grabbed the letter, tearing the paper slightly in his haste to unfold it.

   Dear Sir,

 Dr. Hosack informed me of your letter inquiring after my health. If you are concerned for me, I would recommend you do as all my other friends have done and come see me for yourself. I will expect you no later than midnight.

                                                                         AH

The nerve of him. Summoning Burr to his bedside, as if he’d fawn over him like all his other simpering worshippers.

“Do you have an answer, sir?” The messenger asked, still standing in his doorway.

A scathing remark was on his tongue before the image of the morning passed before his mind’s eye. Hamilton’s body jerking as the bullet pierced his side, the agonized moan that accompanied his slow descent to the earth.

“Tell him, I will see him within the hour,” Burr heard himself say instead.

Burr dressed slowly. He wrapped a scarf around his neck despite the humid air outside, still fighting off the last dregs of his ague. He set off into the night, walking briskly towards William Bayard’s house, trying not to think of all the ways this was wrong. Disturbed. He was stealing into a home in the middle of the night to visit with the man he’d shot not eighteen hours earlier.

He was on the second step of the stoop when Gouveneur Morris opened the door and stepped outside. Morris froze on the first step, a moment away from colliding with Burr, and his eyes went wide with fury.

“How dare you. How dare you, sir!” Morris screeched, a vein in his neck popping.

The door opened again, Doctor Hosack poking his head out.

“Mr. Morris, please, have some consideration. You’ll wake the whole household,” Hosack scolded. “Mr. Burr. It seems you are expected by my patient.”

“Expected!” Morris spluttered.

“General Hamilton asked me to attend him,” Burr said simply.

He side-stepped Morris and pushed into the darkened house. Hosack jutted his chin towards the steps. Disappointment and grief were both stamped in the doctor’s expression, but his voice remained steady, professional.

“Mrs. Hamilton is resting in a spare room for now, but you shouldn’t linger long in the sickroom. General Hamilton needs his rest.”  

Burr nodded his understanding. With a deep fortifying breath, he mounted the staircase. His footsteps sounded too loud on the wood as he ascended. What if he woke Eliza? He couldn’t imagine facing her ever again, much less tonight.

The door to the sickroom was propped open, candlelight making the interior look warm and welcoming. Dread pooled in his belly. He hesitated in the doorway, debating whether he could sneak out without being accosted by Hosack or Morris.

“Is that you, Burr?”

His thoughts stopped. His whole body stood frozen. He couldn’t do this, he couldn’t, he couldn’t….

“Burr?”

Hamilton’s voice sounded shaky and weak, like he was suffering from a bad cold. How often Burr had shared an office or a court bench with Hamilton when he was sniffling and coughing. That would never happen again. They’d never face each other in court. Never meet for drinks to discuss politics. Never pause on the street to share tales of their children’s antics. Never…a million nevers.  Grief was welling up inside him.

“Aaron?”

Vulnerability. Fear. Was Hamilton afraid of him? He felt a flash of annoyance before the sinking realization—he was the reason Hamilton was dying. Whatever his reasons or justifications, Hamilton would be right to be afraid of him.

He forced his feet to step into the room. Forced his eyes to look upon the consequences of his actions from this morning. Hamilton was propped up in bed, his face so pale it was practically translucent. Those flashing eyes met Burr’s, and a weak smile pulled at his bloodless lips.

“I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come,” Hamilton said.

“You sounded quite confident of my obedience in your summons,” Burr retorted before he could bite his tongue.

He expected a righteously angry jab in return. Instead, Hamilton laughed. Then he moaned, a hand resting a top his stomach. “Don’t make me laugh.”

An apology was on his lips, but Hamilton continued, “Did I offend you?”

“You did, rather,” Burr admitted.

“Good. I meant to. I figured, if I already paid the ultimate price, I might as well enjoy myself.” Hamilton had, impossibly, blanched further as he spoke.

“Should I fetch the doctor?” Burr asked, ignoring the comment. He couldn’t fault the logic, at any rate.

“No,” Hamilton said, hardly above a whisper. “No, it will pass.”

A beat of silence followed. Burr stayed hovering in the doorway.

When the pain became manageable again, Hamilton flicked his wrist slightly. “Come here,” he whispered.

Burr obeyed. He knelt by the bed, and when Hamilton’s palm turned up in invitation, he took his hand, squeezing it lightly.

“I’m sorry,” Hamilton said, stealing the phrase from Burr’s lips.

Burr looked at Hamilton, wide eyed and confused. Hamilton’s eyes were damp with tears, and his hand squeezed back weakly.

“I’m sorry if the things I said hurt you. Whatever happened in our political lives, I never wanted to hurt you personally.”

Something like panic began to take hold of Burr’s mind. Such a simple sentiment. A few weeks ago, that little speech had been all he’d wanted to hear. An apology. A sob ripped from his throat, wholly against his will. “Why?”

A furrow appeared between Hamilton’s brow. “Why what?”  

“Why didn’t you just say that when I wrote you?”

Hamilton considered for a long moment. “Stubbornness, perhaps. Pride. The same reasons you challenged me rather than coming to my office to talk about what you’d read. It all seems rather pointless, now.”

“Alexander,” Burr said, voice tight. “I—”

“It’s all right.”

“You’re dying.”

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I forgive you.”

Burr gripped at the bedpost and he met Hamilton’s eye. Hamilton smiled, a gentle quirk to his lips. Burr nodded back, the corner of his own lips curving upwards despite the heaviness in his chest.

Later, people will look at him oddly when he claims Hamilton as his friend. “My good friend, Hamilton, whom I shot.” There’s satisfaction in the shock on their faces, that he can’t deny. But it was also undeniably true.

Game of Sultans - Teri (FIC)

The old Sultan, high in his Imperial Palace, surrounded by viziers, servants, and loyal kin, lay dying. A mysterious illness had struck him after a grand feast he held, inviting many nobles to join his family. Years before his most loyal wife had passed away giving birth to his sole heir, a dashing young prince, who stood steadfast by his father, learning all he could, knowing one day he would rule his father’s kingdom. And now, as the old man ailed, wasting away, the disease robbing him of his strength and health more and more each day, the prince vowed to uphold the standards his father had set, and his grandfather before. To protect the people, to keep the kingdom strong, and to repel the enemies of the throne. The news was announced across the kingdom, one day, the Sultan had succumb to his illness and died. Flags of mourning were raised, wailing was heard in the streets, and all bowed their heads in respect. Then the young prince rose to power. He assumed his father’s throne, and began his reign. Benevolent, but firm, he protected his people, and the lands prospered. The people within the kingdom were happy and thriving. Life was good, no one entertained the thought that trouble loomed upon the horizon.

In the palace, Sultan Rahmi, and his viziers were shocked to receive a threat against the kingdom. Who was this Alexander? Hocas, the eldest of the viziers cleared his throat. “Sire… perhaps it is time to think of the future of the kingdom as well.” He had served Rahmi’s grandfather, Taner, who had been slain in battle. Thankfully Taner had three sons who had survived to adulthood, and though none were living now. The empire had been secure.

Rahmi looked up from the parchment before him and lofted his dark brows. “The future? What do you mean, Hocas?”

“What I mean, Sultan, is that you have no heirs. I know you have your wives, but as of yet, neither have given you a child.” Hocas spoke frankly, no fault in his tone. “It may be smart to broaden your horizons, there are many eligible maidens in the kingdom.”

With a sigh, Rahmi sat back. He did have Canfeza, the graceful dancer who had enchanted him a few years ago, and then there was the ever passionate Cecilia, who made his heart beat deeply whenever they were together. And the sweet and curious Alessa had caught his eye of late. Perhaps it was time to expand his interests. “I see. I cannot force anything upon my women, of course, but… you may have a point.” “Of course, sire, of course.” Hocas nodded and they spoke again of soldiers and armies and battle tactics with his other viziers.

Days passed, and he had approached Alessa more often, until he was certain she too felt for him as he did for her. When he proposed she was ecstatic and soon they were happily married. Like his two wives before, she fit into palace life quite well, and was fast friends with the others in his harem. Though Canfeza did sneeze a lot, once Alessa moved her cat, Fluffy, into the palace.

Within two years, he was the proud father of two little girls. His beautiful princesses were his world. The threats of the crazed Alexander seemed distant, nearly forgotten. His days were full of managing the minutiae of the kingdom, and doting on his darling daughters, and his beautiful wives. Perhaps it was silly to some, but he did so enjoy spoiling them, showering them with whatever they desired and lavishing his attentions on them.

But still, no male heir came. Hocas kept this notion in his mind, subtle reminders, a gentle urging to produce a prince to take the throne when his time was over. Thinking about this, he brooded in the imperial gardens, until something caught his attention. He could feel eyes upon him and his hand went to the decorated sword at his hip, and he looked up to find himself staring into deep and dark eyes. They stunned him, robbing him of his breath. It took a moment for him to recover his wits. “Ah, m’lady, I do apologize if I have disturbed you with my presence.” He rose from the bench he had been resting on.

With a demure gesture, she glanced down, her gauzy wrap over her face obscuring most of her features, and the scarf draped lightly over her hair covered her even more. “Nonsense, Majesty, how could you possibly be a bother to me?” “Ah, then you know who I am.” Rahmi smirked faintly, amused by her already. “I am at a disadvantage then. Might I ask your name, maiden?” With a bow, she nodded, “Teri. I am an apprentice of Lady Cansu.” She lifted her gaze again, albeit briefly, to gauge his features and his mood.

Rahmi thought for a moment, the name was familiar to him. It took a few seconds before he placed it. “Ah, Vizier Ayas’ wife! I see, so then you study the healing arts of the hands? Perhaps this is fate, I do have such a headache today!” He grinned, almost boyishly when he spoke, toying with her lightly.

The woman smiled behind her scarf, gauzy as it was, her brilliant and bright smile was visible through it. “For you, Majesty, anything.”

With a chuckle, he stepped across the path to her, “Perhaps another time, good lady.” He inclined his head politely, and studied her form as she bowed in response. “I hope to see you again.”

“And I you, Sire.” Teri answered honestly. She watched as he left, her gaze following his figure. “Most certainly, I will be sure that we do meet again…” Her full lips curved into a smile, though there was nothing bright about it, instead it was cold, dark even, with a determined set to her beautifully angled jaw. “Most certainly…”

A week or more passed before it happened, but they did encounter one another again, in the same place even. Rahmi was walking, worried and unsettled, through the garden to relieve his mood, when he came upon Teri, sitting on the bench he had been on before, reading a book. He paused just out of sight, watching her for a moment through the branches of a blooming tree. Reaching up he gently plucked a single beautiful blossom and brought it to her. “Ah, the elusive Lady Teri.” Looking up sharply, startled, Teri’s eyes widened a moment. “Sire! I am no Lady, just a simple maiden!”

“You could be so much more, if you wished it.” He answered her, “I haven’t gotten you out of my thoughts since we first met.” He dropped to his knee before her and placed the blossom on her book. “Come, be with me in the Palace!”

“Sire!” A flush had spread across her cheeks and the woman stammered, “I-I d-don’t know…”

Rahmi winced, “I am too forward, I apologize. I will leave you to think about it then, shall I?” Taking her hand, he placed it on the blossom resting on the pages of the book, a romance novel he took note of that little detail, and stood once again, sweeping his broad, fur lined, cape back. Standing tall, he did strike an impressive figure. “I will come back, tomorrow, to this spot, at this time. Meet me here with your answer.” Strong and angular though his features were, they softened when he smiled to her then. “Please be here.” And he was walking away from her.

Teri stared after him, shocked. That had gone so much easier than she had anticipated. Now to just play the part. “S-Sultan!” She called after him, rising quickly, her novel toppling from her lap as she grasped only the blossom. “You don’t have to come back! I can answer you now!” Running after him, she caught up to him, bosom heaving, as she smiled, “I could be no happier to be with you!”

Turning to her with a broad smile, Rahmi reached out and drew her into his arms. “Then I must insist upon one thing, my dear.” “Oh?” She asked in a soft dazed voice. “Call me Rahmi.” And thus was it that Teri joined the Sultan’s harem, becoming one of his darling wives. All the time, he had no idea that she was not the sweet woman he expected her to be.

In her own room, behind a locked door, the lovely Teri practiced with deadly precision, with her knives, hidden in decorative nonsense about her living quarters. And she played the part of the dutiful loving wife, waiting for word from her contact, waiting to strike…

However, no word came. The Ottoman army fought against all threats, wiping out one enemy after another. Teri, who did not know who had hired her, with no information besides what to expect from her contact, waited for orders she did not know would come or not. It came as an unexpected shock to her when the royal physician told her that she was with child. That was not at all in her plans. But there she was, her hands resting on her soon swelling belly. Beside her lay Rahmi, sound asleep, having spent his night with her, proud of his wife, who would soon be a mother. She almost swore she could feel the child moving. Turning to look at the father of her child, she felt her heart tearing in two. This was never supposed to happen. She was not supposed to love him… she was not supposed to have a family with him. From the other side of the bed, her hand dropped to the stand beside her, fingers brushing over the ornate handle of the lamp, which would pull out into a blade. She could sink it into his throat, completing her mission, before the orders came…. couldn’t she?

She was certain she felt movement then, and she gasped. Before she knew he was awake, she felt the strong hand of her husband on her stomach, tender and protecting. He was only half awake, and he drew her closer to him, nuzzling his bearded face against her neck. It tickled and she twitched away from it before she could help herself.

“I’m sorry, little dove, I will shave in the morning…” he muttered to her.

Little Dove. His sweet nickname for her. She wished she didn’t love the sound of it.

“No, don’t. It just surprised me. Alessa and I both like you with a beard,” Teri turned to drape her arm around him, empty hand resting against his back, as the ornate hilt cooled from her touch.

Months later, a heavily bearded Sultan stroked his tired wife’s hair as she recovered in her bed, holding her little baby in her arms. “A son, my little dove, I am so proud!”

Teri gazed into the tiny face of her child, their child, smiling in awed dismay. Nine months of carrying him had not prepared her for the sheer rapture of seeing him in her arms. He had nursed, and was sleeping happily and peacefully in her gentle and loving embrace, blissfully unaware of the strong hand stroking the little bit of dark fuzz on his head. “What…. What shall we call him?”

“Dursun.” Rahmi answered immediately.

Looking up at him in surprise, Teri’s eyes watered before she could help it. “My father…?” “Yes, I know you miss him terribly, and the way you speak of him, he loved you dearly. I’m sure he would love our son just as much.” The Sultan smiled, smoothing her sweat damp hair back. “Rest, little dove. You both have had a hard day, spend your day with him, and I will tell the kingdom of your good works.” Bending, he kissed them both before leaving her to recover with the child. He had learned with his first daughter that it worked best to let the mother and child bond and have time together. Besides, the girls were eager to meet their little brother, he could hear the excited whispers at the door.

As the midwife and her aids left, with only a quiet maid in the corner of the room to fetch anything she could need, Teri watched the face of her little son.

“To hell with them,” She muttered under her breath and snuggled him closer. She was the wife of a powerful Sultan. “Demet,” Teri addressed the maid, “Take those papers by the basin and start a fire, it’s too cold in here.” “Yes, M’Lady!” The maid bowed and hurried to do so.

And as the orders to assassinate the Sultan went up in flame, Teri sighed, content and happy.

Orders be damned.
