1. Guide Line
2. Stillover
4. Stand Up
6. Black Coffee
7. FREE

DARKDAYZ GET SOME REST WHILE YOU CAN!
I SPY GOOD TIDES JUST AROUND THE CORNER
So we are about to go into some of the deepest tides of the season.
I thought this would be a good time to talk about why tides are such a major factor in chasing Corbina.  You can learn just about everything you need to know about Corbina behavior by fishing tide cycles and more specifically a single 6-hour tide cycle.
Let's go through a likely scenario for the weekend. If you arrive at a beach where there is an ample volume of Corbina this is most likely what you are going to experience.  At the crack the beach will most likely be high and dry but if you are lucky and have done your homework the beach you have chosen will have a fair amount of structure.  Think of this as a poker game and mother nature is showing you all of its cards.  You should be identifying where the best and deepest structure is and how when the tide fills in which areas will get flooded first. Any structure that has a cut running from the outside break to the inside should be sought after.  These come in the forms of long troughs and often will have a dog leg bend to it will look similar to a fairway on a golf course.
Corbina will slide in these areas first because they want to move up to the kitchen as stealthy as possible.  You will experience a few phases of behavior on the rising tide with Corbina. The first phase is the approach.  If the crab beds are still beyond the reach of the Corbina they will generally start staging themselves to make a move as soon as the water depth will allow them. This is where you want to be keen on your observation.  If there is more then one likely pathway for them to follow I will keep checking back between the different likely structures to see which on they seem to be concentrating on. They will often start sliding up likely structure even though it’s still dry at the end where the crab beds are located. This comes in the form of seeing fish sliding halfway up a beach and turning back mid slide, “C’ mon everybody charge” halfway up the beach, “We are not going to make it.” “Run away, run away!” Eventually, they do make it and that’s when the next phase kicks in. Once the water level gets to the point it starts to lap on the crab bed you will find the aggressive fish trying to feed.  This often looks like a dine and dash.  There is not much time for them to feed even though they will try and do so.  You will recognize this because the fish will often tail quickly, make a splash with an audible pop as they turn as quickly as possible. Similar to when you spook a fish although they are simply spooking themselves.  This phase will keep repeating until the structure reaches a level that the Corbina are comfortable with.  Once you have the right depth of water in the structure they won’t feel the need to flee or at least run all the way back to the outside before returning for another go at the crabs. The tricky part about this phase is it’s hard to get the timing right to present a fly to the fish. Casting at them on the approach is what most people will find themselves doing because they are an easier to target but anytime you can get in a good presentation at Corbina just before they are nose into a crab bed is your best chance at getting bit. I try to keep my casts on the putting green instead of the fairway.
The next phase is happy fish.  Weary Corbina will glide perpendicular to the waterline.  Happy fish you will see swimming parallel to the waterline.  As the tide builds you will see the fish change in behavior often it seems someone has flipped a switch and fish start piling in and showing themselves with reckless abandon.  This what we call the magic hour although I doubt it really lasts that long. If you have good structure and the tide is at a perfect level what I like to call equalized the fish are content to stay in there and feed. They will most likely feed in a circling pattern nose into the current which if you pay attention you can get a radar lock and put in the cast.  These are the fish that give you the greatest amount of time to perfect your approach.
The last phase is when the tide is getting too high and the beach and or structure starts to flood. Once this happens the fish go on a walkabout and start to roam and often they whereabouts are now concealed by the surf.  You can still do well if you have full high sun and low surf but the window is closing on your session.
A good Corbina session is like listening to Guns and Roses Sweet Child O Mine. It starts off with a long slow build-up into a feverish pitch and then it’s over.  Tight lines Axel
