Euclid Space Telescope continues to be plagued by technical problems Euclid's problems began when its guidance system failed to observe dim stars. The Euclid Fine (FGS) is a device that helps orient the telescope. Under normal conditions, FGS records known stars to determine where the telescope is pointing. Engineers extensively tested the FGS before launch, but real-world space conditions are difficult to simulate—ground tests don't always account for factors such as cosmic rays that interfere with the device's performance. [caption id="attachment_60436" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Euclid Space Telescope[/caption] To resolve a fault in the system, the Euclid mission was extended to develop a software update to correct the problem, and ESA is optimistic about the outcome of the problem. However, this is not all the problems that Euclid has encountered. One of the instruments caught strange streaks of light from time to time. The ESA command center soon determined that the Sun was to blame. Euclid Space Telescope continues to be plagued by technical problems Euclid is located at the L2 Lagrange point, sharing this space with NASA's James Webb Telescope. Here, “behind the Earth,” the Sun is behind the telescope, and the telescope is in the shadow of the Earth. To provide protection from excess radiation, the telescope has a sun shield. But the sunscreen doesn't shade everything it should. Euclid reflects a small amount of light that appears to evade the sunscreen. Euclid's visible light instrument (VIS) is sensitive enough to detect even reflected light when the instrument is turned at certain angles. In total, stray light appears in approximately 10% of VIS images. How much this will impact the success of the Euclid mission remains an open question. The European Space Agency (ESA) launched the Euclid Space Telescope from Cape Canaveral on July 1. By all accounts, the start went smoothly.

Readers added context they thought you should know:
The universe is estimated to expand faster than the speed of light.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_energy
the size of the universe doesn't add up. like if its 13.7 billion years old isn't there a hard cap of 13.7 billion light years on its radius? what we can see is like 5 times bigger than that, though. howd it get so big

Rumors of a Dark Universe Image Credit: High-Z Supernova Search Team, HST, NASA
Explanation: Twenty-one years ago results were first presented indicating that most of the energy in our universe is not in stars or galaxies but is tied to space itself. In the language of cosmologists, a large cosmological constant -- dark energy -- was directly implied by new distant supernova observations. Suggestions of a cosmological constant were not new -- they have existed since the advent of modern relativistic cosmology. Such claims were not usually popular with astronomers, though, because dark energy was so unlike known universe components, because dark energy's abundance appeared limited by other observations, and because less-strange cosmologies without a signficant amount of dark energy had previously done well in explaining the data. What was exceptional here was the seemingly direct and reliable method of the observations and the good reputations of the scientists conducting the investigations. Over the two decades, independent teams of astronomers have continued to accumulate data that appears to confirm the existence of dark energy and the unsettling result of a presently accelerating universe. In 2011, the team leaders were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work. The featured picture of a supernova that occurred in 1994 on the outskirts of a spiral galaxy was taken by one of these collaborations.

From SpaceTelescope.Org Picture of the Week; August 13, 2018:
Galactic Treasure Chest
Galaxies abound in this spectacular Hubble image; spiral arms swirl in all colors and orientations, and fuzzy ellipticals can be seen speckled across the frame as softly glowing smudges on the sky. Each visible speck of a galaxy is home to countless stars. A few stars closer to home shine brightly in the foreground, while a massive galaxy cluster nestles at the very center of the image; an immense collection of maybe thousands of galaxies, all held together by the relentless force of gravity.
Galaxy clusters are some of the most interesting objects in the cosmos. They are the nodes of the cosmic web that permeates the entire Universe — to study them is to study the organisation of matter on the grandest of scales. Not only are galaxy clusters ideal subjects for the study of dark matter and dark energy, but they also allow the study of farther-flung galaxies. Their immense gravitational influence means they distort the spacetime around them, causing them to act like giant zoom lenses. The light of background galaxies is warped and magnified as it passes through the galaxy cluster, allowing astronomers insight into the distant — and therefore early — Universe.
This image was taken by Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide-Field Camera 3 as part of an observing program called RELICS (Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey). RELICS imaged 41 massive galaxy clusters with the aim of finding the brightest distant galaxies for the forthcoming NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to study.

What Are The Consequences of Dark Energy?
Calling it a consequence might be an odd word to use in this instance as dark energy isn't worrying about the implications of it's actions, but for us, there might be some not so welcome end results. While our lifetime certainty doesn't have to worry about our Sun blowing up soon or the cold, cold death of the known universe, it doesn't mean it won't happen! Our Sun, of course, will go kablam in about 4.7 billion years give or take. We know that because we have a pretty good understanding of how stars work by now. Not TOTAL understanding, but we understand their lives and evolutionary tracks pretty solidly. But with this expansion of the universe we know, and the acceleration of it that we seeing happening (as well as increasing) - what exactly does that look like for the universe at some point? LIKE THIS BIG FIERY DEATH EXPLOSION?!
Tumblr media
Nah. Not really. More likely, people think this pulling apart could lead to a kind of "Big Rip" (which it's kind of funny to see so many theories reiterating the word big - Big Bang, Big Rip, Big Crunch, Big Chill... Not very creative!). At first, we thought the pull of gravity was all we had to worry about and that eventually everything would come smashing back together after the Big Bang, but then you know, oops, expansion was discovered. Now we're sitting here going "Uh oh, what if everything gets SO far apart, that we reach a sort of ice age across the universe?" Without enough mass and gravity to overpower this newfound dark energy force, what's to really stop the continual drift or even slow it down? And if it doesn't stop, new stars won't be able to form and the old ones will eventually die out - leaving us very, very cold... And if it gets EVEN worse - those remaining galaxies and stars left might be torn apart by the rapid expansion - the idea that the initial expansion that started from the Big Bang to create our known universe is gonna be the expansion that ends our known universe.
Tumblr media
If dark energy does overpower gravity, it's estimated to take at least a good 22 billion years, so I suppose... we don't have to freak out JUST yet. But again... that's just a theory, one of a million possible theories we may not even have thought of yet. Space is cool, but man, it's also scary sometimes.

A Letter to Earth 2017 Review
Before I begin I will write to let you know this is my first Social Media post really. I did try to join Facebook, but was banned within 24 hours of spreading hope.  I am glad to be joining the community and I am not too sure how It works.  So, my first post ever. I Apologize for anything I may have overlooked.
I also have come to understand things are broken down into Memes for some reason, but as long as one person decides to read this, thank you.  I am not one to normally partake in the social media experiment.
There is a Gallery associated with this of all the images of the past year, but it has taken hours to upload for some reason.
Since I can only post Text, Images, or Links, The others will be in subsequent posts, citing sources, links, and a Gallery of the last year.
Enjoy.
This is my Letter to the Earth. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello,
As it seems everyone has looked back on the past year, there seems to be one big underlying theme of the Planet as a whole.  Many of whom are still continuing to fight for some time ahead as well.
The news is wrought with one big News Scandal after the next.  Pain and anguish fill our nightly news, and we tune in, we log on, we make sure to see what else happened today – what will happen tomorrow.
The people are tired of the way things have been running, a society of oligarchs ruling against the common peoples own wishes in many ways.
But, to me 2017 has been the greatest year.  It is one filled with hope, a year that saw tremendous agony, but together people rose up without the help of the Corporations, without the help of the Governments at hand. The Common people out doing their best to help, in any way they can.  Hope.  True hope that one can feel, the pure satisfaction that isn’t displayed on the News.
This past year was one filled with pain, one where everyone only reflects upon how angry everyone is how we are all just waiting for the world to end in some way.  Hurricanes?  Fires?  Earthquakes or even record flooding.
We sit around, waiting for a way to change things, but the change is everywhere.  It is amongst the everyday people who are handing out water, the ones fighting back against world changing events, the people not on the News.
This year gives me hope.   The world saw all new Technological advancements, the likes of which the world has never seen before.  We have the power to harness the Sun, the Wind, we have the technology to finally break-away from the chains that bind us.
The world is changing, but for the better.  There is good and evil in everything we do.  The world’s  science is being clouded, the effects are real, and they are widespread.  The world’s encyclopedia at our finger-tips, the ability to print out of thin air.  Magic technology, things we as a whole had only fantasized about.
Now is not the time to be fighting, it is a time of hope.  We like to fight the fact that the planet is not dying, but is it  so hard to say its not true?  Paychecks?  Debt?  Does it really matter when the technology is literally sitting out there just waiting to be plucked?
The new phone, is it really so much better?  Does your thousands of dollars of debt racked up for menial things really buy you happiness?   Today, maybe.  What would make you happy?  What gives people hope, the politicians? The people of the world once gave hope a chance, but everyone is learning it takes a village.
Are the possessions now really enough? There are so many in need, but all you have to do is search. Times are changing, there is no doubt.  There are experiences all around, there is hope in mankind as we band together.
We are people of this world, not of any one country, we have no obligation or moral need to rely upon those that abuse and degrade this planet even more.  It is time we act like it, to act like human beings, to give hope regardless of borders.
Republicans?  Democrats?  Does it really matter at this point anymore?  What are we suppose to do, go out and vote to change the world?  It helps. So the next corrupt politician can come along, bought and paid for by the corporations?
We no longer have a need for that.  The Technology has finally hit its mark, where we can give an amputee an arm, replace a heart, things the ancient people could only have dreamt of in their most wildest of fantasies.
It is time as a people to recognize our flaws.  To look deep within, call it Prayer, call it Meditation, breathing, looking within your own self.  Science even calls it Consciousness for  you can call it whatever you may.  Its time to focus, to focus on the hope of tomorrow, on the person to help when a disaster strikes.  To focus on yourself when the time comes.
This world is a terrible place, there is no doubt about that.  This gives me hope, it gives me peace, for the past year revealed how little we truly need another corrupt politician. This year has shown that all we need is to stand together.
I am not interested in -FAKE NEWS- but I am a purveyor of cold hard facts.  Nothing more.
The 44th President gave us Hope.  It’s time to use it.  It’s time to stand together, to help, it is a time of Wonder.
But, I’m just another speck in the vast landscape.
What do I know.
Oh, and Happy Winter Solstice. Hope you enjoy the time.
Sincerely,
Qai Ke

This means, one not only has to start out from the hypothesis of the existence of a nonobservable negative density in interstellar spaces but also has to postulate a hypothetical law about the space-time distribution of this mass density. The course taken by Herr Schrodinger does not appear possible to me because it leads too deeply into the thicket of hypotheses.
Huh. What the heck's going on here? Oh, just Albert Einstein accidentally stumbling on dark energy 70 years before the rest of us.
Check it out at io9: Einstein may have discovered dark energy without even realizing it.
