The Property Brothers’ Worst Design Fails: What Went Wrong?
HGTV
Drew and Jonathan Scott have been household names in the home renovation world for years. And while they’re known for their incredible home transformations on “Property Brothers,” they can’t always be on their A-game. Over the years, they’ve had their share of design fails, too.
As proof, just check out these home design bloopers below. Consider them warnings of what not to do to your home, and learn how the brothers typically fix these mistakes so you can, too.
Not enough storage
This entryway may look nice, but there’s hardly any storage.
HGTV
Drew and Jonathan are usually good at providing lots of storage in a home. Still, there’s one place they sometimes fall short: the entryway.
In one renovation, they brought in a bench with a few drawers, then installed three pegs for hanging hats, coats, and purses. At least it was something, but the brothers could do better.
The fix: Luckily the brothers learned from past mistakes when working on another entryway with a similar layout. In this home, they installed full-length closets with a shelf, a drawer, and a bench seat for optimal storage. Much better!
These closets provide more storage.
HGTV
Too bland a design
This living room is a bit plain.
HGTV
The brothers love making a living room feel warm and welcoming, but in one renovation, they left a sitting room feeling a bit stark. With a beige sofa, few decorations, and empty walls, the space felt cold and generic.
The fix: The brothers typically add tons of personality to a space, with wall hangings and shelves displaying a family’s treasures.
Wall hangings and shelves make a space feel more homey.
HGTV
Glass dining tables
This dining table doesn’t make the space feel cozy.
HGTV
Glass dining and coffee tables have been popular in recent years—but they can give a dining space a harsh, cold look.
In one renovation, the brothers used a glass table with a built-in banquette. Yet the glass table’s corporate feel combined with the casual look of the banquette left the space feeling more like a hotel dining space than a home.
The fix: The brothers mostly stick to warm, wood-tone tables. These tables give homes a classic gather-around-the-table vibe while still being stylish. The soft colors of light woods make dining rooms feel bright, and when paired with modern chairs, they create a stunning space.
This wood dining table brings a warmer feel to the home.
HGTV
Transitional flooring
This flooring transition from wood to tile seems harsh.
HGTV
In one home, the brothers used a patterned tile for the flooring, which ended suddenly where the wood floor began. It was a harsh transition and, they realized, a poor design decision.
The fix: Jonathan and Drew typically choose uniform hardwood from the living room to the dining space to the kitchen. It’s a good style choice because the uniformity gives a house good flow, and avoids the awkward look of changing flooring from room to room.
These days, the brothers encourage homeowners to go with hardwood flooring throughout the home, from the living room to the kitchen.
HGTV
Dark stairs and railings—and carpet!
These stairs are too dark, and the runner looks outdated.
HGTV
Both carpet and dark wood can make staircases look dated, so it’s a mystery why the brothers ever combined these looks in one very strange staircase.
In this renovation, they chose to keep the dark wood steps and handrail (despite the rest of the wood flooring being much lighter), then installed a gray riser, which made the staircase look no better.
The fix: The brothers typically lean toward lighter colors. In another home, they painted the dark-wood handrail white, took the carpeting off the stairs, and refinished the wood to get a lighter color. The results were much more welcoming!
These lighter stairs look fresh and modern.
HGTV
A kitchen that’s too white
These white cabinets are clean, but the look is overdone.
HGTV
White kitchens were all the rage once, so it’s no surprise that Drew and Jonathan caved to this trend and styled numerous kitchens with white counters, white cabinets, and white or gray backsplashes. But today, all-white kitchens can look stark and boring.
The fix: The brothers typically take more chances with their palette by installing colorful cupboards, two-tone cabinets, and fun accent pieces.
The brothers used wood tones and green chairs around the island for a colorful look.
HGTV
A bathroom with too many dark colors
A bathroom should be light and bright.
HGTV
These days, Drew and Jonathan know that bathrooms should be light, bright, and luxe. But they didn’t always renovate this way.
In one episode, Jonathan designed a bathroom with dark-wood paneling, a dark vanity, and dark floor tile . The space ended up feeling small and dingy.
The fix: The brothers’ bathroom designs typically feature light tones to make the space seem larger. In another renovation, they chose white walls, a white vanity, and a white counter. With a splash of color from the gold hardware and some dimension from the gray floor and shower tile, this space is lovely.
This bathroom is light and bright.
HGTV
Too much of one color
This living room has too much of one color.
HGTV
In one renovation, Jonathan and Drew transformed a living room into a monochromatic nightmare. With so much gray, the space looked dull and flat.
The fix: The brothers usually mix up their colors a bit to add more visual interest. In another renovation, they used a lot of brown (in the form of various wood tones), but they evened out the look by adding light walls and a large, cream-colored sofa. Together, these tones worked to make the space feel relaxed, stylish, and approachable.
Drew and Jonathan Scott use lots of wood tones in this living room, but it doesn’t all come out one color.
HGTV
Boring backsplashes
This backsplash blends into the wall.
HGTV
In one renovation, Jonathan and Drew chose a plain white subway tile backsplash to go along with white cabinets, white counters, and white walls. The backsplash faded away!
The fix: The brothers know that backsplashes are meant to bring some color and personality into kitchen design. It’s a much better pick than the plain subway tile.
This backsplash brings the right amount of color into this kitchen.
HGTV
Busy fireplaces
This fireplace seems a bit busy.
HGTV
Stone fireplaces have long gone out of style, with many preferring sleek tile fireplace faces instead. Nonetheless, the brothers sometimes left stone fireplaces as they were, as they did in this one renovation fail that keeps this home stuck in a time warp.
The fix: The brothers usually paint brick or stone fireplaces white to give it a sleek look.
This clean and white fireplace looks much better.

A Softer World prompt: 24. Cam and Lucy.
I joined Plenty of Fish to find out who stole my bike. A fun first date would be going to your house to see if you have my bike. (What a lovely home. Do you have a shed?)
AN: This got long. I also don’t know who survived WW, so I’m trying to leave references to a minimum, so... there.
--------
He couldn’t look at her after the Vault -- not directly in the eyes, and not even indirectly or out of his peripheral. Cameron could not physically bring himself to look at Lucy Morrill without the room falling colder and condensation gathering on nearby window panes. He wanted to look at her. Cameron wanted to do more than look at Lucy Morrill, but each time he tilted his head up to meet her eyes...
He pictured her clawing at her throat, pictured her gasping for air, pictured her falling blue-lipped and still in his arms.
“I’m sorry,” was all he managed to say when she tried to confront him on his avoidant behavior, and not even Henry could get him to leave his room whenever Lucy was around. Eventually, Cameron packed up his meager possessions into a cardboard box and left. He was an early riser, and was up far before anyone else in Gil’s house was.
He hopped a Greyhound out of New Haven, but didn’t notice the orange glow of a cigarette on the porch, much less Lucy sitting in the dark watching him leave.
------
Months passed. Cameron managed to hold down a few tutoring jobs while he poked his head into finding more of a permanent position -- stability. He laughed each time he thought about what he was trying to find. Wasn’t that why he had come to New Haven in the first place? Stability over powers that rained storms and hurricanes all through his personal life and left him grasping at flotsam? He’d come searching for stability, but what he found was the quickened pace of his heart whenever he saw Lucy and the mischief in her eyes and the shadows in her smile.
She said she would never let him hurt her, but that’s all he’d seen in the Vault. That’s all the Vault had been -- endless dreams of his friends and loved ones and how he’d hurt them and killed them. None of it was real, he’d come to find, but it could have been...
He managed to save up enough money to rent a hole in the wall apartment, and to buy another bike. His old one was still dangling from a tree somewhere in New Haven, and he wasn’t brave enough to show his face in a city he’d destroyed to try and find it.
Some things, he’d decided, were best to just move on from.
-----
He was running late. Cameron didn’t like to swear -- he always pictured his mother glaring at him for each minor curse word -- but he managed to throw out a few shits and fucks under his breath as he ran around his apartment in a fluster of confusion.
He had an interview, and he was... mostly dressed for an interview. His button-up now had wrinkles from leaning over the couch, and one of his shoes had come untied. His tie had loosened from its knot, and his bag had been blown aside at one point due to a panicked gust of wind spreading through the apartment. The air was snowing resumes and reference letters and testimonies, but Cameron found it hard to care about paper when he had another more puzzling conundrum to worry about.
He had an interview across town, and no bike to get to the school. He kept his bike tucked behind the couch and carried it up and down the stairs each day so that nobody would steal it from out front...
How the hell did he lose a bike inside his own apartment?
Sure enough, though, the bike was gone, replaced with only thin air and the faint silhouette left behind from where the dust had fallen...
He almost missed the sticky note tacked to the wall. Cameron’s mind had been turning over a thousand different logical possibilities that he missed exactly what was in front of him. His brows furrowed as he reached out and detached the neon yellow note from the wall with a crinkle of adhesive.
Come home
He knew her handwriting better than he knew himself at times.
Cameron sighed...folded the note neatly and stuffed it into his pocket before turning and walking out into the sunlight.
----
He didn’t have a bike, and New Haven was miles away in any case, so he had to ride the bus. Cameron supposed there was a bit of beauty in that plan, because it gave him time to sort his thoughts and ready himself for what he was about to face when he got off the bus and hailed a cab to Gil’s house.
It was unlike Lucy, though. It was unlike the Shadow Girl to be so cryptic when she could just tug him back to where she wanted him without him noticing until it was too late. He spent the remainder of his bus ride worrying about her and letting his breath fog up the glass of his window seat.
----
New Haven had cleaned up well in the aftermath of The Riots... or rather, it had cleaned up after him. Cameron kept his head low and tried to avoid looking out of the cab windows as he was sped from the Downtown bus station to the suburb that held Gil’s House. He didn’t want to see the evidence of what he had done to keep everyone else safe, but there it was: roof shingles that still needed to be redone, trees bent and bowed in every which way, and a car still smashed into a radio tower that nobody had figured out how to retrieve yet. Some of the houses still had boarded up windows, while others were perfectly fine, and then the car stilled, and Cameron saw the familiar ring of devastation that provided Gil’s house with a barrier.
The house itself was untouched, still a home, and -- when he gave it a second glance -- still a daycare, but all he could see was the hell of what he’d done... and what he could still do.
He considered tapping the driver on the shoulder and considered going all the way back to the Station and back to the hum-drum anonymous life he’d tried to carve for himself, but instead...
Instead he sighed, paid his toll, and stepped out onto the familiar street and then up to the front door where another familiar sticky note awaited him:
Come in.
He opened the door, expecting fully to be tackled by children or Henry and his swinging arms, but there was only silence and another sticky note on the tray that they used to keep their house keys on.
Upstairs
Cameron sighed and took a moment to reign his emotions into check before he made his way to the familiar staircase of the house and clambered up until he saw the bedroom doors staring back at him.
The Vault had so many doors too, and none of them pleasant. Cameron shivered, even though the air in the house was still warm. It was only when he remembered where his door was that he found the next sticky note:
In here.
He took another breath, placed his hand on the doorknob, turned it, and walked in.
------
Lucy was there, sitting at the edge of what had once been his bed.
“Oh good -- you made it!” she called, her voice all cheer as she hopped to her feet. “I was beginning to think you were never going to show.”
Cameron still couldn’t look at her, so he averted his gaze to the corner of the room, and to the... bike...
The battered bike.
“Lucy this...--” Cameron started, but the words stuttered into nothing as his mind went blank.
It was the bike that the tornado had launched into a tree. It was his old bike. The one he’d bought on his way to New Haven. The paint was scratched to hell, and the metal was wrangled into strange shapes, and there were tree twigs hanging from the basket, but it was his.
“Yeah, I stole your bike,” Lucy admitted, still all grins as she strode over to the corner of the room and walked it over to him...
The wheels didn’t even turn. The bike scraped across the ground with a groaning protest of the hardwood.
“And I know it’s not the boring one you bought in San Fran, but it’s the one I remember you on, and it’s the one we’re going to fix. Together. It’s just a little bent, not broken.”
Bent, but not broken.
“Lucy, I... I don’t know how to fix a bike. I wouldn’t know the first place to start.”
I don’t know how to fix myself...
“Well,” she said as she took another step closer to him, and then another, and another, until she was staring right at him and he had no choice but to look her directly in those famous Morrill blue eyes. “We’ll just have to learn together, huh?”

The Property Brothers Reveal One Room You Don’t Even Realize Is on Your Wish List
HGTV; realtor.com
Each week on “Property Brothers: Buying and Selling,” Jonathan and Drew Scott dish as they drive to meet their latest clients. In the latest episode, “Downsizing to Maximize Living Space,” Jonathan asks Drew what’s the one thing he’d want if he were stranded on a desert island.
“A genie, so he could grant my wish to get off the island,” Drew replies.
Jonathan calls foul. What would Drew wish he had on the island to make his life better there?
“Okay then, a multitool,” says Drew. In fact, he adds, he wants Jonathan to be his living multitool. After all, he can pretty much fix anything!
It’s a sweet moment of brotherly love—all before the Scotts get down to business with Canadian couple Dave and Lisa, who are ready to downsize from their four-bedroom house to a smaller place that nonetheless has plenty of open space for reunions with their adult kids and their partners. They’re willing to pay $950,000 for the right house.
Drew Scott goes to great lengths to find the right home for Dave and Lisa.
HGTV
Meanwhile, Jonathan has to update the couple’s current home. As is, Drew estimates, it’s worth about $850,000. But after five weeks and $80,000 in renovations, he thinks they can expect to get their hoped-for price of $1 million-plus. Here are some smart real estate tips the Scotts impart as they get to work.
Nix the fully carpeted stairs
A little stylish carpeting on the steps to reduce slippage is perfectly acceptable, but the stairs in Lisa and Dave’s house have worn shag on the risers, the steps, and everywhere in between.
Jonathan intends to remove the carpeting and sand and polish the wood underneath. However, when he pries the carpet loose, he finds nothing more than plywood. He has to redo the entire staircase. While he’s at it, he replaces the wood railings and posts with modern metal.
The update makes all the difference—especially since the stairs are visible from the entryway.
Light floors and new, carpet-free stairs make a huge difference.
HGTV
Light floors make a room look bigger
Dark floors may be stately, and can make large rooms look more intimate, but when you want a room that feels airy and spacious, light wood is the way to go. In this case, they use light pine planks, and it does wonders.
Don’t skimp on the laundry room
“A lot of times, laundry rooms are the overlooked space that nobody puts extra effort into,” says Jonathan. “But if we’re going to have an amazing kitchen, we need to have an amazing laundry room. And then this will be the space that buyers didn’t even know was on their wish list.”
Lisa and Dave’s laundry room was originally a haphazard space with a mismatched washer and dryer and bright yellow walls. Jonathan puts in brand-new, stainless-steel appliances and paints the room a nice dove gray. Home buyers end up fawning over it once they get to tour the house.
A nice laundry room with a matching washer and dryer draws raves.
HGTV
Waterproof floor in wet room
While there is light pine used throughout the house, Jonathan decides to go in another direction for the laundry room.
“Because this is a wet room, you’ll have spills on the floors, so I don’t want to run hardwood in this space,” he says. “I’m going to run beautiful tile in here that looks like marble, but underneath that, I’m affixing a waterproofing layer right over the subfloor that will prevent anything from seeping through the grout, and with the vibrations from the dryer, it will keep the tiles from popping up.”
Good thinking, Jonathan!
How to update a fireplace
The painted brick fireplace that stops halfway up the wall looks extremely ’80s, so Jonathan decides to overhaul the entire wall by tearing out the bricks and carrying the fireplace all the way up the ceiling, and also expanding it a few feet on each side.
The end result looks very grand, but it didn’t cost a lot, he says: “All it is is decorative trim and molding. Now it looks like a stunning floor-to-ceiling feature.”
Jonathan Scott shares inexpensive tips for making a fireplace look grand and regal.
HGTV
Do the Scott brothers deliver?
As promised, buyers are impressed. So impressed, in fact, that there are multiple offers on the home. In the end, Dave and Lisa accept the highest bid, which comes in at $1,075,000—or $25,000 over asking price.
Meanwhile, Drew has found them a brand-new home for $50,000 below their budget of $950,000.
It’s a win-win situation, and the Scotts prove themselves indispensable again.
Lisa, Dave, and two of their five daughters rejoice with Jonathan and Drew.
