So, I've been seeing a lot of talk lately about the Force, what you can and can't do with it. Its all been very interesting.
And it got me thinking about the Jedi and the Sith, and about how it all parallels real life.
The Force is life—spirit, vital force, the animating principle.
That statement may seem pretty vague. Even a bit mystical. I ask that you hear me out.
Regardless of what you believe (or don't believe) there are things that are just plain fascinating, impressive, or awe-inspiring. Those feelings, that wonder, that marks us as sapient beings, that's apart of the Force, as are the things that spark those feelings in us.
One all-encompassing driving Force influences the destiny of the galaxy. An energy field generated by all living things, the Force surrounds and penetrates everything, binding the galaxy together. Universal balance—life and death, creation and destruction—is reflected in the Force, and thus is reflected from the Force back into the galaxy at large. The Force, for all the mystery and the power it provides, is as much a part of the natural order as suns and planets and life itself.
Taken from The Dark Side Sourcebook
In my opinion, if you were to take the above quote, and strip it down to its most base parts it is thus:
The Force is being. Or more specifically, the Force is the continuation and striving of being.
Which loops back around on what I said earlier. The Force is life—spirit, vital force, the animating principle.
With that said: the present participle of life is living.
And how we live (our thoughts, beliefs, and choices) determine our relationship with the Force and in turn with literally the entirety of existence.
How we approach life determines what side of the Force we're on.
Mr. Lucas said it best I think.
"The core of the Force….you've got the Lightside and the Darkside, one is selfless, one is selfish, and you want to keep them in balance. What happens when you go to the Darkside, It goes out of balance."
George Lucas, 2010 video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiImoO5QkcA - [50 second mark]
So I was trying to reconcile the two quotes I've listed. What is put into the Force is reflected back out. Is that why Anakin seemed to fall so quick in the movies? He put in a little selfishness, a little greed, a little fear, and it got reflected back into him? Did he essentially take space magic cocaine and lose his marbles?
Depends on your interpretation.
Universal balance—life and death, creation and destruction—is reflected in the Force, and thus is reflected from the Force back into the galaxy at large.
A little digging saw me realize how much Lucas took from various philosophies around the world. Digging deeper into those global philosophies saw me realize how much they took from each other.
A way of describing this reflective nature of the Force is described in various ways throughout the world's oldest philosophers, some dating all the way back to Mesopotamia.
The Microcosm-Macrocosm Analogy.
That is, truths about the nature of the cosmos as a whole, can be inferred from truths about human nature or in GFFA sapient nature.
In reference to Anakin, his fear didn't make him fall, the fear was already there, the Force just reflected what was really going on inside of him which made Yoda's comment make a lot more sense.
Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealously. The shadow of greed, that is.
Yoda, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Anakin's fear is twisting his visions of the future. He can see a future, but what he's seeing is messing him up even worse, because he's only seeing the worst possible endings.
He let his fear into the Force and the Force reflected it.
He was worried about his wife dying. He was having flashbacks of his mother's death. It was rising in him like a tidal wave and his lack of control over this fear twisted his precognitive powers against him, showed him, what deep down, he expected and believed to see.
His fear became all he could see. And because he didn't take Yoda's advice, didn't change the channel as it were, his situation only got worse. He dug himself into a rut, a loop, where he didn't control his fear, the Force showed him his fear, and in turn his fear grew.
Because he trusted in the Force totally. But in the same breath overestimated his abilities. And that fear? I don't know about you, but when I'm afraid, I want to feel safe, what would make a former slave feel safe?
His wife?
No. That's just a reminder of what he's seeing.
His mother?
A reminder of a failure to save someone he loved.
Or, perhaps, power?
Foreshadowing people. Don't we love it.
The War probably didn't help either. How many clones do you think he saw die? Just like that. No warning. No nothing. Just death. Because we already know the precognitive powers of the Jedi had been harmed on a galactic scale.
He'd had no idea she was about to walk into a blaster bolt. The Force never offered the faintest hint of a clue. No trace of a bad feeling-or rather: no hint that all the bad feelings he'd had were about to add up to something much, much worse. Nothing. Nothing at all. That's what sickened him. What happens to a Jedi when he can no longer trust the Force?
Mace Windu, Shatterpoint
I guess, I've said all this to say that when reading about the Force, or for those writers amongst you, writing about the Force, the key element is character, the character of the character, because that is the Force.
Spirit.
THE END.
Yeah, I had no idea where I was going with all this. I just rambled until it made some sort of sense in my head.
If you got this far, hope it was worth it.

Illustration by Mike Vilardi. “Dark Force Rising Sourcebook.” April, 1993.
Mara Jade reuniting with Grand Admiral Thrawn has long been my favorite scene from Timothy Zahn’s “Dark Force Rising.” I don’t think I’ve read the passage in over a decade at this point, but was shocked to realize I remembered the dialogue verbatim.
"We met once, during the public dedication of the new Assemblage wing of the Imperial Palace on Coruscant. At that ceremony the Emperor introduced me to you as Lianna, one of his favorite dancers. Later, during the more private ceremony that followed, he revealed to you my true identity."
"And what was that private ceremony?"
"Your secret promotion to the rank of Grand Admiral."
Thrawn pursed his lips, his eyes never leaving her face. "You wore a white dress to both ceremonies," he said. "Aside from the sash, the dress had only one decoration. Do you recall what that decoration was?"
Mara had to think back. "It was a small shouldersculp," she said slowly. "Left shoulder. A Xyquine design, as I remember."
"It was indeed." Thrawn reached to his control board, touched a switch; and abruptly, the room was filled with holos of shouldersculps on ornate pillars. "The one you wore is somewhere in this room. Find it."
Mara swallowed, turning slowly as she looked around. She'd had literally hundreds of fancy dresses for her cover role as a member of the Emperor's entourage. To remember one particular shouldersculp out of all that...
She shook her head, trying to clear away the unpleasant buzzing sensation that hovered deep in her mind. She'd had an excellent memory once, one which the Emperor's training had made even better. Focusing her thoughts, fighting upstream against the disquieting aura of this place, she concentrated...
"That's it," she said, pointing to a delicate filigree of gold and blue.
Thrawn's expression didn't change, but he seemed to relax a little in his seat. "Welcome back, Emperor's Hand." He touched the switch a second time, and the art gallery vanished. "You've been a long time in returning."

Tumblr media
In the all-too-near future, the world slides into the Greater Depression, the United States affected most dramatically. Nationalism surges, and the social safety net is in tatters. Corporations control governments openly, corruption is commonplace, and the citizenry is starkly divided between those who have and those who go without. Urban sprawl runs amok, and great metroplexes connect the great cities into teeming, soulless metropolises, their lights shining across the countryside.
The heartland of America is largely abandoned, the bread basket now empty. Law enforcement and the government have given up on these regions, and utilities are scarce and unreliable. Few can survive within these outlaw areas. Few humans, that is.
Tumblr media
For in these forgotten and empty places in the rust belt, the tissue of reality tears wide, and energy from nightmare dimensions and planes of utter terror seep into this world. These places, called demongrounds, grow more substantial, expanding each day, and creatures from these hell-places walk freely there, and from the demongrounds they infiltrate the metroplexes to feed their inhuman hungers and bring ruin to all.
Some of these strange and terrible creatures are remembered through folklore and legend — monsters such as vampires, demons, ghouls, and their like — while others are utterly fantastic, extradimensional and alien beings from beyond time and space. Together, these minions of darkness are opposed to all life, and they struggle to extinguish the last lights of human civilization.
Some few stand against them, humans banded together and armed against these dreadful forces of darkness. These minion hunters stalk them in the cities and even in the demongrounds, but the greatest challenge they face is the realization that these monsters do not work alone: they are aided by humans who have made terrible pacts with the forces of darkness, selling out their own kind for power and survival.
This is the world of DARK CONSPIRACY.
Tumblr media
In 1990, Game Designers Workshop first brought Dark Conspiracy to life. It was a robust and acclaimed roleplaying game series, far ahead of its time with canny predictions about the shape of things to come.
Tumblr media
In 2019, Clockwork Publishing brings it back. For the first time in more than 20 years, Dark Conspiracy will be available in print in a deluxe new version of the acclaimed roleplaying game, with an updated system and setting, featuring all-new art and content.
Tumblr media
The relaunch will begin with the release of the Dark Conspiracy quickstart adventure, the Dark Conspiracy core rulebook, accompanied by the Dark Conspiracy Gamemaster Screen and Resource, and more. Future supplements will include sourcebooks detailing gear, psychic powers, minions, and will further explore the world of Dark Conspiracy.
The Rules
Our version of DARK CONSPIRACY uses and updated and streamlines version of the original rules. The resulting system is straightforward, runs quickly in play, and players can grasp it easily.
The basic chance of success is equal to the relevant skill of the task being attempted plus the associated attribute that skill belongs to: Skill Rank + Attribute = Skill Value.
All actions a character (whether minion hunter or nonplayer character) attempts are handled on a single d20, attempting to roll equal to or below the Skill Value. The d20 result itself is not modified, just the Skill Value being attempted.
The Skill Value may be modified by the general difficulty of the task being attempted, such as due to environmental factors, conditions, how injured the character is, or other factors. The Difficulty Modifiers range from +6 for a Routine task to –9 for an Impossible one.
A roll of 1 is always a success and a 20 is a failure, no matter what the modified Skill Value is.
A roll of 10 lower than the modified Skill Value is an outstanding success (like a critical in other games), and a roll of 10 higher than the modified skill value is an outstanding failure (a fumble in other games).
Initiative is based on a combination of a character’s relevant combat skill rank plus their Agility attribute plus a roll of 1d6.
Each combat turn is broken into six five-second combat phases. In each combat phase, characters can perform a minor action and a combat action, as well as multiple reactions and/or free actions.
Minor actions include things like bracing, moving at a walk or trot, switching gear, and standing from being prone.
Major actions include aiming, firing, attacking in melee, readying a weapon for later use, reloading, running, using an object, throwing something, and disengaging.
Reactions include blocking (parrying) and reactive attacks. The more you attempt in a round, the harder it gets.
Free actions are things like dropping items, going prone, and brief talking.
If you are a veteran player and would like to know more about specific changes, consult the section "What has Changed?" below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s what stands out with this new edition:
This version of Dark Conspiracy is aimed specifically at a modern audience and modern gamers. The system is an updated version of the popular alternate rules system presented in The Empathic Sourcebook and has been optimized for rapid resolution of action sequences and conflicts. Unnecessarily complicated system elements are now resolved using the standard dice mechanic.
Character generation has been streamlined, and the overwhelming superiority of military-based careers has been re-balanced in favor of allowing players to choose a wider variety of background options.
The original game was cannily accurate about the shape of things to come when it first appeared, but some background elements have not aged well. The setting has been revised and updated, modernized but still in the original flavor and keeping many core concepts intact.
One of the core aspects of this game are in its title: the conspiracy itself. The dark invaders are powerful and malignant, but they are being aided and abetted by humans, trading members of their own kind for temporary power or survival.
Many classic fantasy or folklore-based monsters and dark races from the original game — the fey, vampires, harpies, mummies, ogres, living skeletons, manticores — have been replaced with creatures and entities more suitable to an audience jaded by decades of exposure to horror films and games, or are modified into something more terrifying to the modern audience. Some are intact, but are not what they seem.
Indianapolis is presented as the default setting for the core book, and the game’s scope has been expanded to include demongrounds in other locales around the world, including Berlin.
Tumblr media
These are only some of the changes, but veteran fans of the game will find that this new edition is still recognizably Dark Conspiracy, and newcomers will enjoy a strong and distinct game with a unique flavor, unlike anything else.
Tumblr media
The initial plan for the Dark Conspiracy line includes five books, a gamemaster screen, a quickstart adventure, and three card decks. These are described below:

Dark Force Rising is my favorite of West End Games’ Star Wars RPG sourcebooks for Timothy Zahn’s trilogy of novels. There was a lot going on in the book, and that means a ton of interesting material to be converted into game terms.
Which is swell and all, but let’s talk about Grand Admiral Thrawn, the more than memorable villain of the trilogy.
To my eye, Thrawn represents the very best of what an expanded universe could offer Star Wars. Here was a complicated villain unlike any we had encountered in the films, most of whom are broadly drawn and a bit silly (save Grand Moff Tarkin, whose technocratic fascism is perhaps even more frightening forty years later). Thrawn is an intellectual of staggering ability, an enthusiastic student of both art and war who thinks in the mode of Sherlock Holmes. A blue-skinned, red-eyed alien, it is testament to his singular abilities that he defied the institutional racism of the Empire’s military apparatus and rose to one of its highest ranks. And, as the custodian of the Noghri assassins, he inherited some of Darth Vader’s legacy.
Something that is often misunderstood about the Expanded Universe, even by folks who worked on it: the good stuff developed naturally in order to tell stories that were different from those of the films. Thrawn exemplifies this. He’d be a strange inclusion in any of the movie trilogies, and yet still feels indelibly at home in that far, far away galaxy.
It’s no wonder he immediately became the subject of fascination for legions of fans, overshadowing the Zahn novels to the degree that they are referred to as the Thrawn trilogy now – an odd development for books meant to be a triumphant return for beloved characters from the films. I suspect that when Disney jettisoned the Expanded Universe out of its canon, fans were most upset at the loss of Thrawn, though it was no real surprise that he eventually resurfaced, in a reimagined form, in the Rebels cartoon.

I have a video game idea, but am trying to write it up as a tabletop RPG source book
YOU KNOW IN SOURCEBOOKS THEY ALWAYS HAVE, LIKE, A FICTIONAL STORY THAT SERVES AS AN EXAMPLE OF GAMEPLAY? THIS IS LIKE THAT, WRITTEN WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF IT EVENTUALLY BEING AN ANIMATED VIDEO FOR A GAME TRAILER
(please excuse my terrible sketches)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An alien planet. Two moons are visible already as a large red sun prepares to kiss the horizon goodnight - copper light still warms the tops of a group of small mountains, or perhaps large hills. Between them, a dark fog pools in one of the shadowed valleys. Purple tinted lightning flashes in the gloom... once, twice; a glowing purple rift opens.
From this portal, a skeletal hand emerges. Slowly, a rotting zombie crawls out, as if from a grave. As it shambles off, a goblin head pokes out, looks around. Before it can come through, a second goblin clambers out over it, getting its fingers up the first goblins nose and stepping on its eye in the process. There is a tussle as each goblin tries to be the first to get all the way out. Then both reach back through and haul out a third goblin, who obviously doesn’t want to leave the rift. While they wrestle, another zombie or two wanders out. The goblins freeze for a moment, staring into the rift. Suddenly the third goblin stops trying to fight his way back in, and all three of them run off into the alien evening. Everything is quiet for a beat. Then an imp flies out of the glowing portal.
About the size of a monkey, the imp has purplish blue skin, red eyes, and a mouth with teeth like a piranha; it flits and hovers on leathery wings like a malevolent humming bird, growling and chittering to itself. As it hovers, a leaf falls behind it. It reacts to the movement like a cat, spinning with a snarl and shooting a small bolt of fire from its clawed hands, incinerating the falling leaf.
A creature somewhat like a large spider emerges from the rift next, with a squid-beak for a head and an inhuman eye the size of a beachball instead of an abdomen. A twig snaps beneath one of its eight legs, and the imp is on it in a flash, shredding and rending and stuffing random handfuls of the flailing thing into its continuously growling mouth.
.....
On the hilltop, the last of the day’s light still warms a patch of alien forest. A creature like a wolf-sized newt with four eyes and a three-way mouth suns itself on a rock. Nearby, a sickly green mist rises in wisps from something green that just might be a pile of poop. A magnified view shows the mist to be made of microscopic spores that split and multiply as they float through the air. One of these spores floats and bobs before getting sucked into a giant damp vent that, from farther away, turns out to be the slit nostril of the alien newt-thing. It twitches and shudders and climbs down off the rock. Waddling a bit jerkily, it sneezes a few times as it moves through the underbrush to the edge of a meadow. As it goes, it sprouts a couple small patches of spore-mold along its neck and face. Crossing the clearing, it becomes obvious the creature is fighting against something forcing it toward an undesired destination, past a couple of out-of-focus background shapes that might be the bodies of other creatures covered in spore-mold.
Quivering, the newt-thing stops and looks up, its view sliding past stick-legs, over an abdomen caked in spore-mold like armor made of moss, up into the face of a crouching insectile alien like a giant praying mantis. The two large striking arms bear weapons, a backpack-fed plasma cannon on one side, a chrome warhammer on the other. The mantoid reaches out with a thin third arm and places a claw/hand gently on the newt-things head. Spores flow from mantis to newt. The body language of the newt thing turns from frightened wild animal, to that of a pet happy to see its owner. The mantis lifts its hand from the newt-things head and points.
At the far edge of the meadow is a signal beacon, like a basketball pole with a transceiver dish instead of a backboard, flashing a small orange light. When the Sporeborn Mantoid points at it, the newt thing springs over and tears it apart playfully, like a dog with a pillow. Satisfied, the Mantoid stands, jetting out several tiny puffs of spores. They convey the Mantoids orders, seeking out the other spore-covered beings in the clearing, a few antmen, some kind of four-winged miniature dragon creature, and a couple species that look related to the newt-thing. They move as a pack, following the mantoid down the hillside, toward the purple tinted storm brewing in the valley below.
Tumblr media
.....
One valley over, music echoes quietly from a slightly beat up Mobile Command Base, perched creakily in the wind on a sheer hillside that shows obvious signs of mining and de-foresting. The MCB looks like somebody attached a clear-cutter combine to a small oil rig, decorated it with pieces of battleship, and stuck the whole thing on a pair of giant tank treads. This one looks as if it has at some point tumbled down a giant set of stairs; stenciled on its battered surface is the Cyberian trademark and model number, some graffiti-style letters and the icon of the Cybernaughts. Hand-painted under all that is the rig’s name: The Grabbyelle.
Inside, a screen provides an overhead sat-link view of the area, tactical information overlaid in glowing lines and numbers. The image clearly shows the local control zone, with the locations of the signal beacons marked. Suddenly, one of the signal beacon indicators turns to a flashing red ‘x’. The one next to it does the same. When a third signal beacon follows, the whole local control zone flickers and dies, shrinking to a small circle immediately around the MCB. The music shuts off.
“Commander Lin,” says a computer voice “there is a situation, please wake up, Commander Lin”
“Mmm?” a woman’s voice answers, “sorry, didn’t mean to fall asleep on you, Grabby.”
“There is plenty of room on my servers to store you for a nap, Commander.”
“Aw, that’s sweet, ‘Elle. Wanna give me a sit-rep?”
“Yes, Commander: signal beacons 13, 14, and 15 are down, terminating our connection to the nearest gridplex- the local supply field is down, we’re under our own power”
“Again? I think there must be a Queen Bug over that direction. Grabby, what’s my crew doing?”
The screen switches from map to a crew list, a silhouette of each of the nine player character classes next to stats and resource meters.
“Currently, I am remote commanding your full roster; all nine of them were deployed, but when the supply field failed I walked them back in so they wouldn’t drain their on-board power supply systems. Currently the whole crew is docked in their bunk-lockers, on stand-by for deployment. Would you like to select one to inhabit?”
“Yeah, I gotta go out there. Let’s see, put me in my Sword-walker and give me a dog pack, a full 7 war-dogs with their custom presets”
“Yes, Commander, initiating link and download now”
Tumblr media
.....
Back in the gloomy valley, the tip of a gigantic tentacle pokes out from the center of the portal. It extends further, waving around in an exploratory way, like the trunk of a blind elephant, then stretches straight down at an angle, touching the ground, and stays there.
From the rift, using the tentacle as a sort of ramp, dancing two steps forward one step back to unheard music, emerges what could be a man. He is dressed in what could be a cloak or duster, wearing a brimmed hat with small horns, like a little viking’s cowboy hat. It is shadowy and he does a little twirl. It is hard to tell, his skin might be some kind of muted fuchsia. He dismounts the tentacle with a flourish, landing in a frozen position with his arm out while the tentacle withdraws back into the portal, which closes. The imp flits down and lands on the man’s outstretched arm. He dances off into the deepening gloom.
Tumblr media
.....
The Mantoid Sporeborn Fighter commands its spore-supports to take up flanking positions on either side and hold while it charges forward into the next clearing, engaging Cyberian Commander Lin and her support dogbots. She has been downloaded into a futuristic cyborg knight/samurai hybrid - wielding a sword in one hand and a submachine gun in the other. She charges forward with all 7 dogbots, and the Sporeborn Mantoid falls back. And back. When it commands its spore-supports to engage, Commander Lin and her dogbots are caught between them. Two of her dogs die, and she is forced to retreat. The Sporeborn press their attack. Commander Lin continues to retreat over a ridge and down the slope on the other side
Meanwhile, the dancing man is making his way through the area. He sees the two dead dogbots and claps his hands in glee. Dancing along, he comes across a dead spore-support, which makes him similarly gleeful. He sees Commander Lin and the Sporeborn Mantoid fighting, and his dance now incorporates very sudden flowing movements from shadow to shadow, almost teleportation, which he uses to cover ground while remaining un-noticed, working his way around the Sporeborn and Cyberian combatants. He stops and mutters to himself, pointing at the Sporeborn Mantoid. The Mantoid's plasma cannon stops working suddenly, and the Sporeborn warrior shakes it frustratedly, looking around with suspicion. The dancing man laughs silently, and continues on his way, unseen, his demonic imp flitting along malevolently behind him. It is obvious that battles have been fought here before - all around are piles of bones and armor, shattered carapaces covered in brown and oozing dead spore-mold, heaps of ash with charred body parts poking out...

"Grabyelle!" Commander Lin yells, while slaying the spore-caked newt-thing. "Yes, Commander?" "Call me down a Drop Base!" "Commander, this will cost more than half your remaining credits." "I DON'T CARE," Commander Lin uses a shoulder mounted mini-cannon to blast apart a spore-support that has just killed another of her dogbots, tosses a grenade, and sprints backwards. "Grabby, I'm DYING out here! Order a Drop Base to my location RIGHT NOW!" "Yes, Commander" Commander Lin is clearly wounded. A pair of her dogbots are almost done finishing off the largest of the spore-support and she orders them to stop and attack the Sporeborn Mantoid. Moving in on the big spore-support, Lin holsters her gun and takes out a device like a robot lobster with a large syringe for a tail, full of a thick liquid that sparkles with nano-bots; it looks like glitter suspended in gel. Blocking a blow with her sword, she leaps forward, plunging the syringe into the base of the large spore-support's skull; the device wraps its legs around the back of the spore-support's head, leg tips sliding under its skin while its tail pumps in the syringe payload. An antenna extends upward from the device, and a light activates. The spore-support twitches and shudders as the nano-bots flood it, putting it under Cyberian control. It turns and begins attacking the other spore-supports. A terrible whistling sound grows louder and a shape like a giant bullet slams butt-first into the ground. Three hooked ground supports unfold from its sides, thudding out into the dirt and anchoring it in place. Commander Lin commands her remaining dogbots into a protective formation, and they guard her while she programs the Drop Base. First she brings the turret at the top online, then she enters a string of digits that begins 3D printing a large mech inside the main chamber of the Drop Base. She turns back to the battle just in time to see another of her dogs go down.

The dancing man has entered a small clearing in the shape of a suspiciously perfect circle, and he moves toward the middle, imp hovering over his shoulder. At the center is an altar with a candle on it. He dances up to it, and shoots a spark out of one finger, igniting the candle's wick. He takes out a knife, and strikes a pose. His arm shoots out and snatches the imp. In one smooth motion, he brings the imp down to the altar and plunges the knife through its heart, leaving it impaled next to the burning candle. Its blood ignites the runes carved all over the altar's surface. Around the altar, a glowing ball of energy appears, and begins charging, growing larger.

The mech inside the Drop Base is almost done printing. Inside the mech is a small and basic human-sized cyborg. As the double nozzle of the 3D printer finishes finishes, we see it is Commander Lin's face. Outside, Commander Lin is almost dead. All of the spore-supports are dead, but the Mantoid's plasma cannon is working again, and she dodges around struggling to stay alive. A chime like an over timer sounds, and a horizontal rectangle slides open along her forehead. She turns and runs. Her last dogbot sacrifices itself, throwing its body between her and a plasma blast as she sprints for the Drop Base. A large data port folds down from it next to the double doors. Her SwordWalker body is larger than a human's and she slides to her knees, slams her head into the data port, which plugs in like a giant USB. There is a vibrating, tense moment while she makes the transfer. The SwordWalker slumps lifeless and falls away from the Drop Base. Inside, Commander Lin's eye's open, housed in the newly printed Battle Mech. The double doors slide open, and she steps the mech out. One side has a large battle axe affixed to an arm that is a gatling gun. The other arm is an RPG launcher with an enormous shield mounted on it. Lin enters an order and the mech hatch opens. The mech raises its shield to protect her while the other arm lays down cover fire, scattering the oncoming spore-supports and blocking several shots from the Mantoid’s plasma cannon. Lin hops out amid the chaos and hastily enters a command on the Drop Base keypad - doors slide shut and uses the last of its material reserves to begin printing again. She jumps back in her mech and charges the remaining Sporeborn. Back by the alter, the glowing ball of energy has grown until it fills the circle. The dancing man takes off the viking cowboy hat, but the horns stay on his head. He tosses the hat, two holes in its brim, to the side. Behind him darkness unfurls as his cloak turns out to be claw-knuckled bat wings. His skin is fuchsia with black fur, his eyes are brightly glowing red embers. He stretches one arm out in front of him, palm down, sharp-nailed fingers spread. His other arm quirks above his head, middle digit pressed to thumb. He smiles with a mouthful of sharp teeth and snaps his fingers. Purple lightning strikes the altar and unleashes the energy contained in the circle - it bursts outward like a balloon popping. Rushing outward, it explodes over the battlefield, where it knocks over Lin's Battle Mech as well as the Sporeborn Mantoid. When they recover, they aren't the only ones climbing to their feet. All around them the dead are rising, glowing purple. The zombies shuffle together into a mass of maliciousness, then turn as one and face Lin and the Sporeborn.
Lin swivels the Battle Mech, grabs the Sporeborn warrior, and flings it bodily into the crowd of undead. The Mantoid rolls to its feet, and slams its massive warhammer into the ground in a power move, knocking the zombies over. While they stand back up, it crouches and concentrates. Spores rapidly multiply on its skin, bubbling into existence like green popcorn. To one side, the Drop Base dings, and 7 freshly printed dogbots pile out of the doors. On the Mantoid a super thick layer of spores has rapidly built up, and now puffs suddenly outward in a cloud. Several of the surrounding undead sprout spore mold and form up around the Mantoid warrior, who screams an alien war cry, facing the rest of the zombies. Their fuchsia-skinned master glides down to the battlefield on lazily flapping wings, purple lightning arcing from the fingers of one hand, summoned fire-sword in the other. The zombies attack, the Sporeborn and its new spore-support crew execute a coordinated defense maneuver, Commander Lin's Battle Mech fires from both arms as her dog bots bound into the fray. Fade to black...
again, this is for a video game idea i have had for a long time, where you can play as a futuristic sci-fi faction, a horror / fantasy faction, or an animalistic alien faction, in a universe that allows cyborgs and dwarves and vampires and weird aliens to all interact.
The core concepts of the game involve commanding teams and competing for resources you can read more about the game itself here but it’s basically just my collection of WIP notes on it so far

NeoExodus Chronicles: Monsters of Exodus (5E)
Tumblr media
Publisher: LPJ Design
Exodus boasts a turbulent history - from the rise of the Kaga to the defeat of the First Ones and the events of the Twilight War. From creation of the Imperial Alliance to the present crisis that threatens to tear that alliance apart. Great heroes and terrible villains drove its march, though even in hindsight the two are not always easily separated. Theirs were the titanic passions, the burning obsessions and base treacheries in which modern Exodus was forged and tempered. The world of Exodus Needs heroes…
Inside this sourcebook you will find for the NeoExodus campaign setting for 5E nearly 20 all new monsters for use in the NeoExodus campaign setting and your home setting including:
Caliban: Calibans are cannibalistic creatures that can be found throughout Exodus, though they are most common in the Wyldlands of Bal, where their brutality has earned them the admiration and friendship of many harsh rulers. The calibans share mankind’s hatred and fear of the First Ones, who enslaved them long ago.
Cynean-Hunter: These feline-looking creatures are made of living crystal, like the cyneans. Cynean-hunters have six legs and hunt mostly at night. As their name implies, they prefer to eat cynean flesh, but they also enjoy creatures with the earth subtype. They are common on the island of Gavea, but have been found throughout Exodus.
Exodite (First Ones): The most common of the First Ones, Exodites are creatures devoted to physical perfection and draconian self-discipline. As such, they typically take positions of command among the First Ones’ forces. As part of the collective of races that once ruled Exodus, they consider themselves superior to most other humanoid life. Exodites view the intelligent races outside the First Ones to be barely higher than beasts, suitable for little more than slaughter or servitude.
Locari: The locari resemble man-sized insect-like abominations, their chitin mottled with dark browns and grays, giving them great camouflage. Their features combine elements of insects, reptiles, and arachnids. They are only known to occupy the island of Ablis.
NeoExodus Dragons: The world of Exodus is inhabited by marvelous creatures, both dangerous and benign. Among the mightiest of these are dragons. Described herein are two new categories of dragon that can be found upon Exodus: the noble and mysterious stellar dragons, and the fell creatures known as conflict dragons. Both types provide for dangerous new foes. While the stellar dragons may be noble and high-minded, they tend to be dismissive of lesser creatures, finding them expendable in the face of achieving the greater good. The conflict dragons delight in misery and destruction and will run unchecked through the world, bringing its eventual demise, unless stopped by those with the power to do so.
Scythian: The scythian is a humanoid race of violent brutes serving the First Ones. Scythians have only one thing on their mind: violence. They live for killing and mayhem. Scythian soldiers are the most common type of Scythian encountered by the outside world.
And may more...

Illustration by Mike Vilardi. “Dark Force Rising Sourcebook.” April, 1993.
This illustration by Mike Vilardi depicts Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade on a mission to rescue Talon Karrde from imprisonment onboard the Chimera, from Timothy Zahn’s “The Dark Force Rising.”
"What now?" Luke whispered to Mara.
"What do you think?" she retorted, dropping her blaster back in its holster and flexing her fingers. "Just tell me which room has the fewest people in it and then get out of the way. I'll do the rest."
"Wait a minute," Luke said, thinking hard. He didn't want to kill the men behind those doors in cold blood; but neither did he want to put himself into the dangerous situation he'd faced during the Imperial raid on Lando's Nkllon mining operation a few months earlier. There, he'd successfully used the Force to confuse the attacking TIE fighters, but at the cost of skating perilously close to the edge of the dark side.
It wasn't an experience he wanted to repeat.
But if he could just gently touch the Imperials' minds, instead of grabbing and twisting them…
"We'll try this one," he told Mara, nodding to a room in which he could sense only three men. But we're not going to charge in fighting. I think I can suppress their curiosity enough for me to walk in, take the flight suits, and leave.
"What if you can't?" Mara demanded. "We'll have lost whatever surprise we would have had."
"It'll work," Luke assured her. "Get ready."
"Skywalker—"
"Besides which, I doubt that even with surprise you can take out all three without any noise," he added. "Can you?"
She glared laser bolts, but gestured him to the door. Setting his mind firmly in line with the Force, he moved toward it. The heavy metal panel slid open at his approach, and he stepped in.

Aysle continues the Possibility War started in Torg Eternity. Storm Knights rise to battle High Lord Uthorion and his army of darkness. A supplemental sourcebook for Aysle, an extended adventure book set within Aysle, and multiple extras and surprises help you continue and expand your table-top role-playing game experience in the evolving world of Torg Eternity.
Tumblr media
Aysle is a realm of magic, fantasy, and an eternal struggle between Darkness and Light! It's ruled by High Lord Uthorion —currently inhabiting the body of a Viking warlord—and his Dread Covenent of nightmares, necromancers, and nefarious lords. Uthorion attacked from above and below, with maelstrom bridges crashing down in the sea to bring his Viking raiders, and a massive ritual connecting the underground passages of Aysle to subways, cellars, and caves on Earth. Any break in the ground may now be a portal to treasure and danger.
Tumblr media
Within Uthorion’s borders magic is powerful and miracles happen, but technology beyond a flintlock rifle sputter and malfunction. High tech doesn’t belong here, and reality tries to right it and transform items into something accepted by the Ayslish. Storm Knights resist this effect, and may bring modern weapons (and more) to bear against the forces of Darkness.
High Lord Uthorion didn't come to Earth alone. For the last century he had possessed Queen Pella Ardinay, the Lady of Light, and used her to corrupt her forces and undermine her allies: the elves and the last of the dwarves. She was recently slain and resurrected—freeing her—and now she leads the remnants of her armies to Earth in pursuit of her hated foe.
Tumblr media
The Aysle source book is an expansion designed for both players and Game Masters. Inside you'll find:
New Perks, Spells, and Miracles for advancing characters. Includes options only available to Beta Clearance Storm Knights, as they learn more about their own abilities and the nature of reality.
Magic Gear! A bevy of new items for adventurers, and random tables for discovering items in coffers or on foes!
An extensive status update for the default timeline. See the course of the first year of the Possibility Wars and the toll it's taken on Great Britain and Scandinavia. Includes a list of ongoing Delphi Council operations and who's who in the Aysle theater of the war.
Get the statistics for the Dark Lord himself, as Uthorion takes matters into his own hands. Defeating him comes at a price, as Pella Ardinay found out the hard way!
New threats. Angered Elementals erupt throughout the realm as raw magic courses across new lands. Knights and wizards roam the roads—many of them selfish and bent towards the ways of Darkness. The Dread Covenant has its own troops: monsters of legend, giants, undead, Vikings, and the foul spawn of Darkness controlled by Uthorion.
Quest generation tables, new Eternity Shards, and more!
Tumblr media
Revenge of the Carredon is a massive adventure suitable for several months of gaming. Start off in middle of the war, fighting in the trenches of Oxford. Tolwyn Tancred, the legendary hero who slew Uthorion’s strange dragon—the dreaded Carredon—and returned to save Pella Ardinay is cursed, and heralds the return of the mighty beast she seemed to slay. Embark on a quest to unlock the mystery of the Carredon’s origins and break the curse before Tolwyn is lost forever and Uthorion regains one of his most powerful weapons.
Tumblr media
When Cosms Collide! Original Torg co-creator Greg Gorden returns with a new mega-adventure! The Cyberpapacy, technodemons, Mobius' shocktroopers, and others all seem to have business in the realm of Aysle—and the Storm Knights are caught in the middle. Join the action and uncover the mystery of what has so many High Lords moving through Uthorion's kingdom, and if anyone can beat the Dark One on his home ground !
Tumblr media
The Aysle GM Screen has three panels. On the inside, all the most needed charts from Torg Eternity in addition to the new charts specific to adventures in Aysle. The outside features a single, gorgeous seamless image and the axioms and World Laws players need to remember.
Tumblr media
Aysle Archetypes come within the GM Screen, and offer new stock heroes to draw from to fill the ranks of your Storm Knights. Meet the Champion of Light, a Core Earther transformed by the magic of Aysle into an armored paladin, the Necromancer, a hero touched by Darkness but who deploys her deadly spells against a common foe, and the Cleric of Dunad, an elf from Aysle who channels the holy power of the gods…and many more!
Tumblr media
Kickstarter campaign ends: Tue, July 30 2019 3:21 PM BST
Website: Ulisses Spiele North America
Tumblr media
The "High Lords" came from other cosms—other realities—conquerors joined together to steal the Earth’s living energy…to consume its very Possibilities! The High Lords impose their reality and transform everything within, draining the Earth of its Possibilities in the hopes that one of them will become an ancient and all-powerful being called the "Torg!"
Tumblr media
Earth is not defenseless. The player characters are "Storm Knights," heroes from all the cosms who fight against the High Lords. They use magic, technology, miracles, and even super powers against the Reality Raiders and their endless minions.
Tumblr media
Join the fight and you can play a monster hunter from Orrorsh armed with alchemical creations, magical medals, or a "Slayer's Gun" loaded with various bullets carved with cryptic runes…a heretical cyberwitch decked out with spells and stolen cyberware...a dwarven "Dragon Warrior" with enchanted armor forged with amazing enhancements and steam-powered devices of doom...an "Electric Samurai" armed with high-tech "Ion Gusoko" armor and ion-charged katana... a psychic survivor who uses demonic Occultech...an mystical edeinos who can call on the miracles of a fierce and powerful goddess whose interventions are very real...a stalwart Core Earther, a realm runner who can negate your enemies' powers... or a pulp hero of the Nile Empire detailed above!
And so much more!
Tumblr media
Each cosm in Torg Eternity doesn't just feel different, it plays different thanks to its Axioms (Magical, Social, Spiritual, and Technological) that define what can exist there, and most importantly its World Laws, rules that reinforce the genre and trope of the place.

Top New YA Books in September 2020
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The YA genre is still booming, providing romance, adventure, and more for teens and adults alike. Here are some of the YA books from August 2020 we’re most looking forward to…
Top New Young Adult Books September 2020
Night Shine by Tessa Gratton
Type: Novel  Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books  Release date: Sept. 8
Den of Geek says: We’re all about crossovers between fantasy and YA here, and this looks like a good stepping stone for a kid who is just about ready to start reading high fantasy. The prose style is slow and deliberate as the author tells a tale of romance, kidnapping, and friendship.
Publisher’s summary: In the vast palace of the empress lives an orphan girl called Nothing. She slips within the shadows of the Court, unseen except by the Great Demon of the palace and her true friend, Prince Kirin, heir to the throne. When Kirin is kidnapped, only Nothing and the prince’s bodyguard suspect that Kirin may have been taken by the Sorceress Who Eats Girls, a powerful woman who has plagued the land for decades. The sorceress has never bothered with boys before, but Nothing has uncovered many secrets in her sixteen years in the palace, including a few about the prince.
As the empress’s army searches fruitlessly, Nothing and the bodyguard set out on a rescue mission, through demon-filled rain forests and past crossroads guarded by spirits. Their journey takes them to the gates of the Fifth Mountain, where the sorceress wields her power. There, Nothing will discover that all magic is a bargain, and she may be more powerful than she ever imagined. But the price the Sorceress demands for Kirin may very well cost Nothing her heart.
Buy Night Shine by Tessa Gratton on Amazon.
Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam
Type: Novel in Verse Publisher: Balzer + Bray  Release date: Sept. 1
Den of Geek says: Authors like Tochi Onyebuchi have taken hold of the moment to write political novels about incarceration in the last few years. This mix of poetry and prose adds to that genre with real world experience from prison reform activist Yusef Salaam. Publisher’s summary: The story that I thought
was my life
didn’t start on the day
I was born
Amal Shahid has always been an artist and a poet. But even in a diverse art school, he’s seen as disruptive and unmotivated by a biased system. Then one fateful night, an altercation in a gentrifying neighborhood escalates into tragedy. “Boys just being boys” turns out to be true only when those boys are white.
The story that I think
will be my life
starts today
Suddenly, at just sixteen years old, Amal’s bright future is upended: he is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and sent to prison. Despair and rage almost sink him until he turns to the refuge of his words, his art. This never should have been his story. But can he change it?
With spellbinding lyricism, award-winning author Ibi Zoboi and prison reform activist Yusef Salaam tell a moving and deeply profound story about how one boy is able to maintain his humanity and fight for the truth, in a system designed to strip him of both.
Buy Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam on Amazon.
Gold Wings Rising (The Skybound Saga) by Alex London
Type: Novel Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux  Release date: Sept. 1
Den of Geek says: It’s always nice to see a fantasy series that moves away from the staple creatures, even if I love dragons, and this series replaces them with ghostly birds that give it a horror movie flavor.
Publisher’s summary: The war on the ground has ended, but the war with the sky has just begun. After the Siege of the Six Villages, the ghost eagles have trapped Uztaris on both sides of the conflict. The villagers and Kartami alike hide in caves, huddled in terror as they await nightly attacks. Kylee aims to plunge her arrows into each and every ghost eagle; in her mind, killing the birds is the only way to unshackle the city’s chains. But Brysen has other plans.
While the humans fly familiar circles around each other, the ghost eagles create schemes far greater and more terrible than either Kylee or Brysen could have imagined. Now, the tug-of-war between love and power begins to fray, threatening bonds of siblinghood and humanity alike.
Buy Gold Wings Rising by Alex London on Amazon.
Top New Young Adult Books August 2020
Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From by Jennifer De Leon
Type: Novel Publisher: Simon & Schuster Release date: Aug. 18
Den of Geek says: This looks like it could be an incisive and hard-hitting book that speaks to the way American Latinx students experience racism and navigate high school social life. It has gained high praise from authors including Celeste Ng.
Publisher’s Summary: Liliana Cruz is a hitting a wall—or rather, walls.
There’s the wall her mom has put up ever since Liliana’s dad left—again.
There’s the wall that delineates Liliana’s diverse inner-city Boston neighborhood from Westburg, the wealthy—and white—suburban high school she’s just been accepted into.
And there’s the wall Liliana creates within herself, because to survive at Westburg, she can’t just lighten up, she has to whiten up.
So what if she changes her name? So what if she changes the way she talks? So what if she’s seeing her neighborhood in a different way? But then light is shed on some hard truths: It isn’t that her father doesn’t want to come home—he can’t…and her whole family is in jeopardy. And when racial tensions at school reach a fever pitch, the walls that divide feel insurmountable.
But a wall isn’t always a barrier. It can be a foundation for something better. And Liliana must choose: Use this foundation as a platform to speak her truth, or risk crumbling under its weight.
Buy Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From By Jennifer De Leon on Amazon.
Lobizona by Romina Garber
Type: Novel  Publisher: Wednesday Books (Macmillan)  Release date: Aug. 4
Den of Geek says: Described as a Hogwarts-style fantasy world with werewolves, this fantasy doesn’t flinch from the real world effects of ICE and deportation.
Publisher’s summary: Some people ARE illegal.
Lobizonas do NOT exist.
Both of these statements are false.
Manuela Azul has been crammed into an existence that feels too small for her. As an undocumented immigrant who’s on the run from her father’s Argentine crime-family, Manu is confined to a small apartment and a small life in Miami, Florida.
Until Manu’s protective bubble is shattered.
Her surrogate grandmother is attacked, lifelong lies are exposed, and her mother is arrested by ICE. Without a home, without answers, and finally without shackles, Manu investigates the only clue she has about her past―a mysterious “Z” emblem―which leads her to a secret world buried within our own. A world connected to her dead father and his criminal past. A world straight out of Argentine folklore, where the seventh consecutive daughter is born a bruja and the seventh consecutive son is a lobizón, a werewolf. A world where her unusual eyes allow her to belong.
As Manu uncovers her own story and traces her real heritage all the way back to a cursed city in Argentina, she learns it’s not just her U.S. residency that’s illegal. . . .it’s her entire existence.
Buy Lobizona by Jennifer De Leon on Amazon.
Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger
Type: Novel  Publisher: Levine Querido Release date: Aug. 25
Den of Geek says: Charming illustrations and a ghost story deeply tied to a family’s history promise a richly textured tale from this Lipan Apache author.
Publisher’s summary: Imagine an America very similar to our own. It’s got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream.
There are some differences. This America been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day.
Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered, in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect facade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets, and she will rely on her wits, skills, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family.
Darcie Little Badger is an extraordinary debut talent in the world of speculative fiction. We have paired her with her artistic match, illustrator Rovina Cai. This is a book singular in feeling and beauty.
Buy Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger on Amazon.
The Dark Tide by Alicia Jasinska
Type: Novel Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire  Release date: Aug. 4
Den of Geek says: Described as atmospheric and salt-soaked, this F/F romance might be a good introduction to readers who want to switch from post-apocalyptic YA to dark fantasy.
Publisher’s summary: A gripping, dark LGBT YA fantasy about two girls who must choose between saving themselves, each other, or their sinking island.
Every year on St. Walpurga’s Eve, Caldella’s Witch Queen lures a boy back to her palace. An innocent life to be sacrificed on the full moon to keep the island city from sinking.
Lina Kirk is convinced her brother is going to be taken this year. To save him, she enlists the help of Thomas Lin, the boy she secretly loves, and the only person to ever escape from the palace. But they draw the queen’s attention, and Thomas is chosen as the sacrifice.
Queen Eva watched her sister die to save the boy she loved. Now as queen, she won’t make the same mistake. She’s willing to sacrifice anyone if it means saving herself and her city.
When Lina offers herself to the queen in exchange for Thomas’s freedom, the two girls await the full moon together. But Lina is not at all what Eva expected, and the queen is nothing like Lina envisioned. Against their will, they find themselves falling for each other as water floods Caldella’s streets and the dark tide demands its sacrifice.
Buy The Dark Tide by Alicia Jasinska on Amazon.
Top New Young Adult Books In July 2020
Feathertide by Beth Cartwright
Type: Novel  Publisher: Del Rey  Release date: July 30
Den of Geek says: This has won a lot of praise for its prose. While some fairy tale adaptations can come off as empty, not actually adding anything to the context of the tradition they’re supposedly writing in, this one’s specificity seems like it might set it apart and add detail to the central metaphor about a young girl’s search for her family.
Publisher’s summary: Born covered in the feathers of a bird, and kept hidden in a crumbling house full of secrets, Marea has always known she was different, but never known why. And so to find answers, she goes in search of the father she has never met.
The hunt leads her to the City of Murmurs, a place of mermaids and mystery, where jars of swirling mist are carried through the streets by the broken-hearted.
And Mara will never forget what she learns there.
Buy Feathertide by Beth Cartwright on Amazon.
Running by Natalia Sylvester
Type: Novel  Publisher: Clarion Books Release date: July 14
Den of Geek says: A political novel of a different type. This fantasy of being part of a presidential campaign seems like it has a lot to say about family and change.
Publisher’s summary: In this authentic, humorous, and gorgeously written debut novel about privacy, waking up, and speaking up, Senator Anthony Ruiz is running for president. Throughout his successful political career he has always had his daughter’s vote, but a presidential campaign brings a whole new level of scrutiny to sheltered fifteen-year-old Mariana and the rest of her Cuban American family, from a 60 Minutes–style tour of their house to tabloids doctoring photos and inventing scandals. As tensions rise within the Ruiz family, Mari begins to learn about the details of her father’s political positions, and she realizes that her father is not the man she thought he was.
But how do you find your voice when everyone’s watching? When it means disagreeing with your father—publicly? What do you do when your dad stops being your hero? Will Mari get a chance to confront her father? If she does, will she have the courage to seize it?

A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor by Hank Green
Type: Novel  Publisher: Dutton  Release date: July 7
Den of Geek says: YouTube sensation Hank Green’s science fiction debut, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, kicked off this series about alien robots. The sequel shows the aftermath, and continues to engage with the author’s internet in internet culture and science.
Publisher’s summary: The Carls disappeared the same way they appeared, in an instant. While the robots were on Earth, they caused confusion and destruction with only their presence. Part of their maelstrom was the sudden viral fame and untimely death of April May: a young woman who stumbled into Carl’s path, giving them their name, becoming their advocate, and putting herself in the middle of an avalanche of conspiracy theories.
Months later, April’s friends are trying to find their footing in a post-Carl world. Andy has picked up April’s mantle of fame, speaking at conferences and online; Maya, ravaged by grief, begins to follow a string of mysteries that she is convinced will lead her to April; and Miranda is contemplating defying her friends’ advice and pursuing a new scientific operation…one that might have repercussions beyond anyone’s comprehension. Just as it is starting to seem like the gang may never learn the real story behind the events that changed their lives forever, a series of clues arrive—mysterious books that seem to predict the future and control the actions of their readers—all of which seems to suggest that April could be very much alive.
In the midst of the search for the truth and the search for April is a growing force, something that wants to capture our consciousness and even control our reality. A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor is the bold and brilliant follow-up to An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. It is a fast-paced adventure that is also a biting social commentary, asking hard, urgent questions about the way we live, our freedoms, our future, and how we handle the unknown.

Type: Novel  Publisher: Scholastic Press  Release date: May 19
Den of Geek says: It’s arguable whether a new Hunger Games book from the point of view of the man who will become the despotic President Snow is really what readers wanted, but it’s here. Inevitably this one will spark a lot of conversation after the runaway success of the original series.
Publisher’s summary: It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. Also, there are dragons and a frightening fantasy job interview, two of my favorite things.
Publisher’s summary: When the Emperor dies, the five royal houses of Etrusia attend the Call, where one of their own will be selected to compete for the throne. It is always the oldest child, the one who has been preparing for years to compete in the Trial. But this year is different. This year these five outcasts will answer the call. . . .

What I Like About You by Marisa Kanter
Type: Novel  Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers Release date: April 7
Den of Geek says: YA romance, and digital age romance in particular, can easily come off as cheesy or derivative. But this ‘love triangle between two people’ looks like a twist on relationships and online identity, plus the coziness of a crush story.
Publisher’s summary: There are a million things that Halle Levitt likes about her online best friend, Nash.
He’s an incredibly talented graphic novelist. He loves books almost as much as she does. And she never has to deal with the awkwardness of seeing him in real life. They can talk about anything…
Except who she really is.
Because online, Halle isn’t Halle—she’s Kels, the enigmatically cool creator of One True Pastry, a YA book blog that pairs epic custom cupcakes with covers and reviews. Kels has everything Halle doesn’t: friends, a growing platform, tons of confidence, and Nash.
That is, until Halle arrives to spend senior year in Gramps’s small town and finds herself face-to-face with real, human, not-behind-a-screen Nash. Nash, who is somehow everywhere she goes—in her classes, at the bakery, even at synagogue.
Nash who has no idea she’s actually Kels.
If Halle tells him who she is, it will ruin the non-awkward magic of their digital friendship. Not telling him though, means it can never be anything more. Because while she starts to fall for Nash as Halle…he’s in love with Kels.

Type: Poetry Publisher: Greenwillow Books Release date: 2/11/2020
Den of Geek says: This unique book of poetry seems perfectly suited to today’s environmental and humanitarian issues. What happens to the things we throw away? What happens to the people who aren’t wanted? The metaphor is rich.
Publisher’s summary: Acclaimed poet and Young People’s Poet Laureate Naomi Shihab Nye shines a spotlight on the things we cast away, from plastic water bottles to those less fortunate, in this collection of more than eighty original and never-before-published poems. A deeply moving, sometimes funny, and always provocative poetry collection for all ages.
“Nye at her engaging, insightful best.”―Kirkus (starred review)
“How much have you thrown away in your lifetime already? Do you ever think about it? Where does this plethora of leavings come from? How long does it take you, even one little you, to fill the can by your desk?”―Naomi Shihab Nye
National Book Award Finalist, Young People’s Poet Laureate, and devoted trash-picker-upper Naomi Shihab Nye explores these questions and more in this original collection of poetry that features more than eighty new poems. “I couldn’t save the world, but I could pick up trash,” she says in her introduction to this stunning volume.

Rebelwing by Andrea Tang
Type: Novel Publisher: Razorbill Release date: 2/25/20
Den of Geek says: Robot dragons? What more to say? The fantastical war story setting and high-energy cast of characters looks like it’ll make this one a good read for fans of Pacific Rim.
Publisher’s summary: Things just got weird for Prudence Wu.
One minute, she’s cashing in on a routine smuggling deal. The next, she’s escaping enforcers on the wings of what very much appears to be a sentient cybernetic dragon.
Pru is used to life throwing her some unpleasant surprises–she goes to prep school, after all, and selling banned media across the border in a country with a ruthless corporate government obviously has its risks. But a cybernetic dragon? That’s new.
She tries to forget about the fact that the only reason she’s not in jail is because some sort of robot saved her, and that she’s going to have to get a new side job now that enforcers are on to her. So she’s not exactly thrilled when Rebelwing shows up again.
Even worse, it’s become increasingly clear that the rogue machine has imprinted on her permanently, which means she’d better figure out this whole piloting-a-dragon thing–fast. Because Rebelwing just happens to be the ridiculously expensive weapon her government needs in a brewing war with its neighbor, and Pru’s the only one who can fly it.
Set in a wonderfully inventive near-future Washington, D.C., this hilarious, defiant debut sparkles with wit and wisdom, deftly exploring media consumption, personal freedoms, and the weight of one life as Pru, rather reluctantly, takes to the skies.

What are the best books on Roman history?
(Textbook) The Romans : From Village to Empire: A History of Rome from Earliest Times to the End of the Western Empire by Mary T. Boatwright (2013)
"The Romans is currently the best textbook on Roman history available in English." - Walter Scheidel, Stanford University
(Textbook) The Romans : An Introduction by Antony Kamm (2014)
A concise but wide-ranging introduction to the civilization of ancient Rome. Covers 1200 years of history; religion and social life; literature, art, architecture and technology; extracts from key contemporary authors, and includes maps.
(Textbook) As the Romans Did: A Sourcebook in Roman Social History by Jo-Ann Shelton ( 1997)
An anthology of translations from Latin and Greek source materials,As the Romans Didoffers a highly revealing look at everyday Roman life, providing clear, lively translations of a fascinating array of documents--from personal letters, farming manuals, medical texts, and recipes, to poetry, graffiti, and tombstone inscriptions. Each selection is newly translated into readable, contemporary English and fully annotated to give necessary historical and cultural background. In addition, the book includes abundant biographical notes, maps, appendices, and cross-references to related topics, as well as an extensive bibliography, providing students with substantial background material to broaden their understanding of the selections. Arranged thematically into chapters on family life, housing, education, entertainment, religion, and other important topics, the translations reveal the ambitions and aspirations not only of the upper class, but of the average Roman citizen as well; they tell not only of the success and failure of Rome's grandiose imperialist policies, but also of the pleasures and the hardships of everyday life.
(Scholarly) The Oxford History of the Roman World (first published 1986)
In less than fifty-three years, Rome subjected most of the known world to its rule. Written by a team of specialist scholars, this book traces the rise of Rome from its origins as a cluster of villages to the foundation of the Empire and its consolidation in the first two centuries CE. It includes chapters on social and political history, the Emperors, art and architecture, and the works of the leading Roman poets, historians, and philosophers.
(Scholarly) The Constitution of the Roman Republic by Andrew Lintott (1999)
There is no other published book in English studying the constitution of the Roman Republic as a whole. Yet the Greek historian Polybius believed that the constitution was a fundamental cause of the exponential growth of Rome's empire. Knowledge of Rome's political institutions is essential both for ancient historians and for those who study the contribution of Rome to the republican tradition of political thought from the Middle Ages to the revolutions inspired by the Enlightenment.
(Modern Scholarship) The Roman Empire : Economy, Society and Culture by Peter Garnsey (first published 1987)
During the Principate (roughly from 27 BC to AD 235), when the empire reached its maximum extent, Roman society and culture were radically transformed. But how was the vast territory of the empire controlled? Did the demands of central government stimulate economic growth or endanger survival? What forces of cohesion operated to balance the social and economic inequalities and high mortality rates? How did the official religion react in the face of the diffusion of alien cults and the emergence of Christianity?
(Textbook) History of the Roman Republic by Klaus Bringmann ( 2006)
In this new and authoritative history of the Roman republic, distinguished historian Klaus Bringmann traces the rise of a small city state near the Tiber estuary into a power that controlled the Italian peninsula and created the final Empire of antiquity, an Empire that was to become both the most enduring in the ancient world and to have the most far-reaching consequences for posterity. Whilst this book is chronologically organized, giving the reader a clear sense of the historical progress and dynamics of Roman republican history, it also offers a coherent and authoritative overview of the culture, economics, religion and military might of the Roman empire, presented in an original and stimulating way. Thoroughly referenced and illustrated throughout, with a wealth of primary sources from great Roman writers such as Cicero and Plutarch, A History of the Roman Republic will be essential reading for university students in history and classical studies. It will also appeal to a wider audience of general readers who are interested in the history of the Ancient world and its legacy.
1. A History of the Roman World 753 to 146 BC by H.H. Scullard (1935)
This definitive study from the author of From the Gracchi to Nero, examines the period from the foundation of Rome to the fall of Carthage. An accessible introduction to these centuries of change, this book will also be useful as context for those studying later developments in Roman history.
2. From the Gracchi to Nero: A History of Rome from 133 BC to AD 68 by H.H. Scullard (first published 1959)
Scullard's clear and comprehensive narrative covers the period from 133 BC to 69 AD, exploring the decline and fall of the Republic, and the establishment of the Pax Romana under the early Principate. More than forty years after its first publication this masterful survey remains the standard textbook on the central period of Roman history.
Caesar: Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy (first published 2006)
Tracing the extraordinary trajectory of the great Roman emperor’s life, Goldsworthy covers not only the great Roman emperor’s accomplishments as charismatic orator, conquering general, and powerful dictator but also lesser-known chapters during which he was high priest of an exotic cult, captive of pirates, seducer not only of Cleopatra but also of the wives of his two main political rivals, and rebel condemned by his own country. Ultimately, Goldsworthy realizes the full complexity of Caesar’s character and shows why his political and military leadership continues to resonate some two thousand years later.
Augustus: First Emperor of Rome by Adrian Goldsworthy (first published 2014)
The dramatic story of Rome’s first emperor, who plunged into Rome’s violent power struggles at the age of nineteen, proceeded to destroy all rivals, and more than anyone else created the Roman Empire
Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic by Tom Holland (first published 2003)
“On a dark January morning, Julius Caesar, the governor of Gaul, rode with his closest aides towards a river named the Rubicon, which marked the line of the frontier with Italy. A governor was forbidden to lead troops out of his allotted province – to break this severest of laws was tantamount to a declaration of civil war. Caesar was a gambler, however. Like the consummate actor on the public stage he had always been, he quoted a line from one of Menander's plays: "It's time to roll the die." Then he ordered the legion behind him to advance, over the river and on towards Rome. Crossing the Rubicon was a step so consequential that it has come to stand for every fateful step in history since. When Caesar rolled his die, the result was indeed a civil war, one that would end up destroying Rome's traditional freedoms and establishing a permanent dictatorship on the wreckage of her constitution.”
Dynasty: The Rise and Fall of the House of Caesar by Tom Holland (2015)
Dynasty continues Rubicon's story, opening where that book ended: with the murder of Julius Caesar. This is the period of the first and perhaps greatest Roman Emperors and it's a colorful story of rule and ruination, running from the rise of Augustus through to the death of Nero. Holland's expansive history also has distinct shades of I Claudius, with five wonderfully vivid (and in three cases, thoroughly depraved) Emperors—Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero—featured, along with numerous fascinating secondary characters. Intrigue, murder, naked ambition and treachery, greed, gluttony, lust, incest, pageantry, decadence—the tale of these five Caesars continues to cast a mesmerizing spell across the millennia.
SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard (2015)
“In SPQR, an instant classic, Mary Beard narrates the history of Rome "with passion and without technical jargon" and demonstrates how "a slightly shabby Iron Age village" rose to become the "undisputed hegemon of the Mediterranean" (Wall Street Journal). Hailed by critics as animating "the grand sweep and the intimate details that bring the distant past vividly to life" (Economist) in a way that makes "your hair stand on end" (Christian Science Monitor) and spanning nearly a thousand years of history, this "highly informative, highly readable" (Dallas Morning News) work examines not just how we think of ancient Rome but challenges the comfortable historical perspectives that have existed for centuries. With its nuanced attention to class, democratic struggles, and the lives of entire groups of people omitted from the historical narrative for centuries, SPQR will to shape our view of Roman history for decades to come.”
The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome and the Barbariansby Peter Heather (first published 2005)
The death of the Roman Empire is one of the perennial mysteries of world history. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Peter Heather proposes a stunning new solution: Centuries of imperialism turned the ...
The Fall of Rome and End of Civilization by Bryan Ward-Perkins (2005
“In The Fall of Rome, eminent historian Bryan Ward-Perkins argues that the "peaceful" theory of Rome's "transformation" is badly in error. Indeed, he sees the fall of Rome as a time of horror and dislocation that destroyed a great civilization, throwing the inhabitants of the West back to a standard of living typical of prehistoric times. Attacking contemporary theories with relish and making use of modern archaeological evidence, he looks at both the wider explanations for the disintegration of the Roman world and also the consequences for the lives of everyday Romans, who were caught in a world of marauding barbarians, and economic collapse. The book recaptures the drama and violence of the last days of the Roman world, and reminds us of the very real terrors of barbarian occupation. Equally important, Ward-Perkins contends that a key problem with the new way of looking at the end of the ancient world is that all difficulty and awkwardness is smoothed out into a steady and positive transformation of society. Nothing ever goes badly wrong in this vision of the past. The evidence shows otherwise.”
(Epic 6 volumes study of Rome's decline) The History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon (1776)
Edward Gibbon's six-volume History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire(1776-88) is among the most magnificent and ambitious narratives in European literature. Its subject is the fate of one of the world's greatest civilizations over thirteen centuries - its rulers, wars and society, and the events that led to its disastrous collapse. Here, in book one and two, Gibbon charts the vast extent and constitution of the Empire from the reign of Augustus to 395 AD. And in a controversial critique, he examines the early Church, with fascinating accounts of the first Christian and last pagan emperors, Constantine and Julian.
The Roman Emperors: A Biographical Guide to the Rulers of Imperial Rome, 31 B.C. - A.D. 476 by Michael Grant (first published 1984)
“One of the greatest multiracial states the world has ever known, the Roman Empire stretched from Britain to the Sahara & from the Atlantic to the Euphrates. Vast & powerful, Imperial Rome instituted many conventions that distinguish life today--reason enough for us to wonder about the men who ruled in her name. Some early writers painted vivid portraits that, with their sensational details, often overshadowed the events of the time. In this book, classical historian Michael Grant uses these writings, augmenting them with evidence from archeology, inscriptions, coins & medallions to reconstruct the lives of 92 Roman emperors.”
A History of the Later Roman Empire, Ad 284-641: The Transformation of the Ancient World by Stephen Mitchell (2006)
“This book presents a historical study of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity from the accession of the emperor Diocletian 284 to the death of the emperor Heraclius in 641. The only modern study to cover the western and eastern empire and the entire period from 284 to 641 in a single volume A bibliographical survey supports further study and research Includes chronological tables, maps, and charts of important information help to orient the reader Discusses the upheaval and change caused by the spread of Christianity and the barbarian invasions of the Huns, Goths and Franks Contains thematic coverage of the politics, religion, economy and society of the late Roman state Gives a full narrative of political and military events Discusses the sources for the period“
A N C I E N T The rise of the Roman Empire Book by Polybius (170 BC)
Polybius, himself a Greek and an active contemporary participant in political relations with Rome, wrote the forty books of his Universal History primarily to chronicle and account for the Roman conquest of Greece between 200 and 167 B.C. He saw that Mediterranean history, under Rome's influence, was becoming an organic whole, so he starts his work in 264 B.C. with the beginning of Rome's clash with African Carthage, the rival imperialist power, and ends with the final destruction of Carthage in 146 B.C.
The Conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar (c. 50 BC)
Among the most durable and engaging texts in world literature, Julius Caesar's Conquest of Gaul tells how he and his legions conquered much of modern France in less than a decade (58-51 BCE), despite determined resistance. ...
The Jewish War by Flavius Josephus (c. 75 AD, Jewish general and historian)
Josephus’ account of a war marked by treachery and atrocity is a superbly detailed and evocative record of the Jewish rebellion against Rome between AD 66 and 70. Originally a rebel leader, Josephus changed sides after he was captured to become a Rome-appointed negotiator, and so was uniquely placed to observe these turbulent events, from the siege of Jerusalem to the final heroic resistance and mass suicides at Masada. His account provides much of what we know about the history of the Jews under Roman rule, with vivid portraits of such key figures as the Emperor Vespasian and Herod the Great. Often self-justifying and divided in its loyalties, The Jewish Warnevertheless remains one of the most immediate accounts of war, its heroism and its horrors, ever written.
The Early History of Rome: Books I-V of The History of Rome from Its Foundation by Livy (c. 1 AD; Roman historian)
This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. ...
The Civil Wars by Appian (c.AD 120 – c. AD 165)
The only suriving continuous narrative source for the events between 133 and 70 BC. Appian's writings vividly describe Catiline's conspiracy, the rise and fall of the First Triumvirate, and Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon, defeat of Pompey and untimely death. The climax comes with the brith of the Second Triumvirate out of anarchy, the terrible purges of Proscriptions which followed and the titanic struggle for world mastery which was only to end with Augustus's defeat of Antony and Cleopatra.
Plutarch Lives of the noble Grecians and Romans by Plutarch (100 AD)
“Plutarch’s Lives, written at the beginning of the second century A.D., is a social history of the ancient world by one of thegreatest biographers and moralists of all time. In what is by far hismost famous and influential work, Plutarch reveals the character andpersonality of his subjects and how they led ultimately to tragedy orvictory.”
Lives of the Caesars by Suetonius (121 AD; Roman historian belonging to the equestrian order)
The Lives of the Caesars include the biographies of Julius Caesar and the eleven subsequent emperors: Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitelius, Vespasian, Titus, Domitian. Suetonius composed his material from a variety of sources, without much concern for their reliability.
The Annals: The Reigns of Tiberius, Claudius, and Nero by Cornelius Tacitus (c. 100 AD; Roman senator and historian)
The Annals by Roman historian and senator Tacitus is a history of the Roman Empire from the reign of Tiberius to that of Nero, the years AD 14–68.

A Dictionary of the Roman Empire by Matthew Bunson (1995)
The extraordinarily rich cultural legacy of the Roman world has had a profound affect world civilization. Roman achievements in architecture, law, politics, literature, war, and philosophy serve as the foundation of modern Western society. Now, for the first time in an A-Z format, A Dictionary of the Roman Empire assembles the people, places, events, and ideas of this remarkable period in one easy-to-use source. With over 1,900 entries covering more than five hundred years of Roman history, from Julius Caesar and the Gallic Wars (59-51 B.C.) to the fall of Romulus Augustus, the last Roman emperor (476 A.D.), this accessible guide provides quick reference to one of the most studied periods of all antiquity.
The Penguin Historical Atlas of Ancient Rome (1995)
More than fifteen centuries after its fall, the Roman Empire remains one of the most formative influences on the history of Europe. Its physical remains dot the landscape from Scotland to Syria. Its cities are still the great metropolises of the continent. Its law and institutions have shaped modern practice, and its ideal of a united Europe has haunted politicians ever since. Fully illustrated and featuring more than sixty full- colour maps, this atlas traces the rise and fall of the first great multinational state. It looks at its provinces and cities, its trade and economy, its armies and frontier defences; follows its foreign ward and internecine struggles; and charts its transformation into a Christian theocracy and its fall in 476.
Handbook to Life in Ancient Rome (1998)
Describes the people, places, and events of Ancient Rome, describing travel, trade, language, religion, economy, industry and more, from the days of the Republic through the High Empire period and beyond.

HIGHLAND DRAGON MASTER by Isabel Cooper: Excerpt & Giveaway
NOW AVAILABLE / SOURCEBOOKS CASABLANCA
Legend claims when Scotland fell to English rule
The Highland dragons took a vow: freedom at any price.
The war for Scottish independence rages on, but it’s only a matter of time before England is victorious. Exhausted and battle-weary, Highland dragon Erik MacAlasdair will face unknown seas to seek the Templar stronghold and claim a power so great it could free his beloved homeland forever.
If only that kind of power didn’t come with such a terrible price.
Daughter of a mortal woman and an ancient dragon, Toinette has never forgotten the proud Scot who once stole her young heart—she’ll gladly fight at his side. But when dark forces leave them stranded on a cursed island, it will take everything they have to defy their fate…and trust the passion that burns within the heart of every dragon.

“How long has he been with you?” Erik asked as Marcus strode away over the deck.
Toinette hesitated a moment, searching his voice for prying or possessiveness, the sort of quality that would demand a sharp answer. She heard none, only a friendly question. It was a pleasant surprise from a man. “With me alone, these ten years. He sailed with my husband for five years before he died.”
“And he thinks you’re…”
“An adventurous young woman who married an older man. Hardly a creature of myth. He also doesn’t ask inconvenient questions.”
“A good quality in a companion.”
“That it is.” Toinette clasped her hands at the small of her back, lacing her fingers together, and stretched. The surrendering crack of her spine felt good. So did Erik’s eyes on her outthrust breasts.
She’d never been able to be very dishonest with herself. As a boy, Erik had been handsome in a gawky kind of way. He’d grown into himself in the last century, into a long nose and a square jaw, arms that rippled with muscle and thighs that filled his hose nicely. Jaded as Toinette was, she couldn’t stand near him and not feel desire ripple through her.
After Jehan’s death, she’d never taken lovers on board the Hawk, be they crew or customer. Men were too unpredictable, too apt to resent each other’s access to any woman’s bed or to think that their presence there gave them authority. Erik was possibly less dangerous in the second case, but the crew were no less prone to the first.
“What sort of birds are those?” Erik asked, sensing and then breaking the silence before it could become too awkward.
Toinette looked up and out. She spotted white wings, black heads, and a profile she knew well. “Terns. They’ll follow us for a little while, but they don’t go very far from land. Once we get further out into the ocean, we might see porpoises.”
“Do you catch them?”
“No. The men think it’s bad luck. For all I know, they might be right. No sense tempting fate on a voyage like this, is there?”
“Not in the least.” Erik grinned. “I’ve a fair idea of how daft the whole venture makes me sound.”
Toinette glanced back from the water to meet his eyes. “Do you think it’s daft?”
“I don’t know,” he said. “Artair doesn’t, and it’s seldom that he’s far wrong.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment too.”
“You’re very quick to seize those.”
Toinette shrugged. “I’ve an eye for a good thing, and I’ll take what I can get.” She turned back to the waves, watching them rise and fall. White foam broke around the Hawk’s prow, and the boat rocked steadily onward. She could feel the wind as if she were the sail herself.
“Almost as good as flying, in its way,” said Erik.
“Oh,” Toinette laughed, “better to my mind. Much of the time, anyway.”
“Truly?” Perhaps remembering how quickly she’d taken to the air at Loch Arach, Erik sounded completely surprised.
“Mm-hmm.” Toinette turned around again, facing into the wind and taking a deep, salt-scented breath. “Flying, you’re above everything. You see it from a distance. It’s you and the stars and the clouds. The birds if you’re staying low enough. Don’t mistake me, there’s a glorious sort of freedom in all of that.”
“But…”
“But on the sea, you’re a part of things. You smell the air, you see the way the water changes from place to place, the difference in what you catch for dinner or the whales in the distance. You get to know the ship too.” She smiled. “I wager I could tell the Hawk beneath my feet even if I were blind. It’s a place to come back to, a thing you make and maintain—and I’d say that’s the mark of souled creatures, though I’m no priest. Craft.”
“Earth and water, not air,” Erik said thoughtfully.
“And not fire, God willing. Rather the opposite of your line.”
“Yours too—or rather your blood,” he amended the statement quickly.
“Ah, well, perhaps it’s the mortal in me. Drawn to what will outlast short-lived men and so forth.” Toinette waved a hand in the air.
“That could be on both counts,” said Erik, looking out to the water. The wind played with his golden hair. He had less to disturb than Toinette did, yet it still ruffled in the breeze, and strands clung to his neck. “The Norsemen carve dragons’ heads on their boats, you know.”
“They might just want to frighten their enemies.”
“We are often things to be feared,” Erik agreed, and his smile was devilish.
Toinette returned it. “Some of us more than others,” she said, “and perhaps for different reasons. Depending on who it is we’re frightening, of course.”
For just a moment, before she went to check on Marcus, she let Erik see the veiled challenge in her eyes.
It would be a long voyage. With no privacy, there was also no danger that either of them would get carried away. And few people were more qualified than Toinette to play with fire.

About Isabel Cooper
Isabel Cooper lives in Boston, Massachusetts with her boyfriend and a houseplant she's managed to keep alive for over a year now—a personal best. By day, she's a mild-mannered editor at a legal publishing company. By night, she's really quite a geek: polyhedral dice, video games, and everything. She only travels through time the normal direction, and has never fought any kind of demon, unless you count younger sisters. She can waltz, though.
