483. Vuk (AKA The Little Fox) (1981)
4/10
This Hungarian movie is about an orphaned fox who gets revenge on the hunter who killed his family. Although superficially similar to the Disney feature The Fox and the Hound, the art and story are actually very different, particularly the utterly unwatchable character animation in a juvenile style that leads me to wonder whether any artist involved had actually ever seen even a picture of a real fox. The writing is shallow at best, and largely is just plain dumb. How any critics at the time could mistake this for some sort of masterpiece, which apparently some of them did, is beyond me.

Tiny: The Seventh Brother (1991)
I can’t imagine more than a handful of people in the world confirming they've seen Tiny: The Seventh Brother but I review everything I see so you're getting a review anyway. This children’s animated film is harmless but any adults watching will be driven just a little bit crazy.
Originally released in German and dubbed in English, It’s about Tiny (voiced by Aaron Bybee), a puppy separated from his owner Angie (Danielle Holliday) during a rainstorm. Alone in the woods, Tiny meets six rabbit siblings who decide to adopt him as part of their family. Throughout the story, the seven siblings (and any children watching) learn about helping each other, being themselves, being brave, welcoming strangers and other wholesome lessons.
I’m not the target audience for this movie, so I can’t say I enjoyed watching it but can give it some credit. Tiny: The Seventh Brother is completely harmless and a good way for you to babysit the kid(s) for an hour while you make supper or something. It’s a nice story with nice morals so children won’t pick up any nasty habits from it. I also thought that although the animation isn’t consistently good, there are some moments where the imagery is very well drawn, particularly the human characters. Angie and her grandfather are always on-model.
The picture doesn’t offer much except to the youngest of audiences and it’s not memorable. The songs spread throughout are like butter on white bread: bland. The characters are stock. There's little imagination present. The acting is wooden and the dubbing lousy. While I give the film credit for some well-animated sequences, there are just as many, if not more, who recycle footage, and a really cheap song montage about halfway through.
On the back of the VHS cover, a questionnaire encourages parents to discuss the film. I've seen it so might as well play along.
We are happy when we help each other. What did the rabbits do for Tiny? How did Tiny help the rabbits? The rabbits prevented Tiny from starving by feeding Tiny plants and carrots. In return, Tiny protected the rabbit from the numerous predators that would have eaten them.
Why didn’t Mrs. Magpie want Tiny living in the forest? How can you welcome new people in your neighborhood? Mrs. Magpie doesn’t like dogs and thought Tiny would ruin everything in the forest. She was kind of right. His presence altered the food chain and made animals who would go after rabbits go after her instead. You could welcome your new neighbors with a bucket of popcorn or by inviting them to come to watch a bad movie with you and your friends, something obviously bad they could laugh at, like The Room.
Tiny got separated from his family when he ran off without their knowing it. What can you do to make sure you don’t get separated from your parents? What should you do if you do get lost? If you get separated from your parents, find a nearby store and ask someone working for help by calling the police or your parents - assuming you don’t already have a phone of my own.
It is always best to be yourself. Tiny tried hard to act like a bunny, but because he was a dog he could save the rabbits. What can dogs do that rabbits can’t? What are you good at doing? Dogs can fetch, play dead, chase away burglars, lead the blind, smoke, and play poker. I am good at watching movies all the way through to the end, even if they’re not really that good. And sharing my movie-watching experiences too.
Tiny taught the rabbits they must sometimes face the danger and not run away. Are there times when you should run away from danger? When? If you spot a large body-builder type with strange armor, white hair, no pupils that repeats “I come in peace” over and over, turn and run. Runaway from any movie titled I Come in Peace as well.
There’s no reason to seek out Tiny the Seventh Brother and I doubt anyone would. If you happen to just find it at a garage sale or it comes with a bunch of other VHS tapes in a classifieds ad (like mine did) I suppose you can dust off your VCR and pop it in to entertain the youngest of kiddies. There are worse movies out there sure, but this one is ok at best. Ultimately, anyone who watches this film - young or old - will forget it. (On VHS, December 29, 2014)

Today’s animated film is: “The Treasure of Swamp Castle” (1985)
“In the turmoilous 18th century, young poor Hungarian aristocrat Jonas helps Szaffi, a young pretty gypsy Romani girl and the illegitimate daughter of a Turkish pasha, get the treasure that’s owed to her by the right of inheritance.”

For instance, Jucika, a Hungarian comic character is also in this legal limbo, as long as she is credited to Pál Pusztai, you are going to be fine, but she is a bit more complicated, as the rights are in the hands of the Pusztai family (no information if they care), the Hungarian state (no care at all) and the magazine Ludas Matyi (bankrupt, all assets absorbed into the Hungarian state and may be sold in the future but not a lot).
There are some who are technically useable but not for specific things, for instance Krtek, the little mole is free to be used but only for fun, peaceful adventures. The Checz state owns the rights, but the creator Zdeněk Miler said anyone can use the character as long as they keep them a nice, cheerful, helpful guy who can not harm a fly and teaches or learns something valuable.
Such stipulations however not cover smaller or mostly state-owned versions, for instance Gusztáv, another Hungarian character who can be used for wartime stuff even... Technically, his rights are owned by Attila Dargay but practically, the Hungarian state owns any rights.
And of course, there is the rather strange case of the character designs done for multiple adaptations, for instance the famous Ukranian version of Treasure Island (with everyone's favourite meme walk cycle), or non-literary versions of Alicia from Kir Bulichev's series as seen in the movie The mystery of the third planet, or the movie Alice, girl from the future. The legal rights are rather weird there, because the owner of the books own the rights but the animated or movie versions are owned by both the writer, the movie cast AND the soviet state, and one of these entities is gone.
There are a few more but I'll have to dig into the legal archives a bit more. I do know however that one is allowed to use a version of the characters from Pannónia film studios' Kérem a következőt, alias Doctor Bubó as long as you do a slightly different version of their design (the design is owned by a still existing government institute) and credit them to Pannónia studio, Zoltán Maros and József Romhányi.
A more personal interest... Is modding an idea? Or can one propose various public domain characters from the former Warsaw Pact countries? :3 I mean, some of the stuff are essentially public domain due to the USSR being gone...
It's a hope! It's technically moddable right now with the Undertale modding tool but that hardly counts, you can do that for any GMS2 project.
If this thing becomes a success at all (which it isn't yet, not even a little) then doing a big reorganizing thing where the files are stored externally, making modding easier, wouldn't be tooooooo difficult

“Közülük az egyik Mácsai Pál, akit a magyar filmesek finoman szólva sem dolgoztatnak agyon. Persze ő Dargay Attila, a főszereplő az HBO Terápia című sikersorozatában, de mozifilmben ritkán láthatjuk. “
