‘A slap in our face’ Dardenne Prairie Board of Aldermen pass controversial development despite residents’ concerns
The former board of aldermen wanted to do some work before the new administration in Dardenne Prairie was sworn in, which the populace found annoying. “Today is a dark day in Dardenne Prairie,” community member Mark Hunter said. A four-story mixed-use development featuring 190 housing apartments and space for commercial businesses was approved by the board. This occurred when audience members continuously yelled at the mayor and board through formal speeches and spontaneous comments throughout the meeting. “It’s not about we don’t want people here, it’s what we don’t want... is a skyscraper,” said Cheryl Bratton. As one of the city citizens organizing the opposition to the proposal, Bratton, who describes herself as not one for politics, called the construction "outrageous." She resides close to the site of the facility. “They have refused to listen to us, and we’ve, goodness knows we’ve tried,” said Bratton. The project received several tax benefits for the developer, but the Wentzville school system last week decided to oppose it. They even made legal threats. They worried they would miss out on at least $3 million. However, an agreement was reached over a week. “The district is withdrawing its previous comments in opposition to the project and no longer plans to seek litigation as it relates to this development,” said Danielle Tormala, superintendent of Wentzville Schools. The land the flats will be built on is expected to be worth 80 times more than it is presently. Therefore, the city stands to gain from this. Although the developer needs such tax advantages to make the project work, according to Alderman Justin Underboeck, he was initially suspicious of the concept. “I don’t think they’re getting a windfall here. They do have a lot of extraordinary expenses for this piece of ground,” said Underboeck. However, a large portion of the audience, which had initially opposed the project, felt anger at the development being forced through before a new board could be seated and may have changed its mind. “It’s a slap in our face,” said one resident who spoke at the meeting. Wentzville's agreement with the developer, according to Tormala, would eventually be made public.
