Southampton FC -This season thus far

Now reading many posts about various football teams this season. It seems like our fate is already decided amongst the critics and the fans alike. I have followed my team in 2 phases so originally 1991-1995, then 2000 on wards. Before I followed them I was a fan of Coventry City which was more a family thing really. I have a long memory and can remember when the club was almost going out of business, the nathan jones months. When I lived on Isle of wight it seemed like many supported Portsmouth but I felt in a minority.
Over the past few seasons we have witnessed many different styles the best one for me up to now was the Hassenhuttl years. In that he managed for a few years to sort of punch above our weight and pull of a famous few victories along the way. There was of course the 9-0s, but both those losses were down to trasnfer listed players being sent off very early in the game. But fast forward to the end of that season and we beat man city 1-0 and secured top flight football. The problem was that Hassenhuttl was doing it mainly by himself as Danny Rohl left soon after. The season before we sacked Hassenhutl and then went for Nathan Jones and Selles. Before relegation.
Like many fans I have much respect for Russel Martin especially last season when we had numerous players looking to move Nathan tella, JWP and others. He steadied the ship and got the players pulling together apart from a blip at the start a 5-0 loss to sunderland we then went on a 25 game unbeaten run. Just as the play offs were being decided we were being written out of the running. But a victory over Leeds and we were up.
So the season we got promoted I felt the board in their wisdom tried to stick within a pre-determined budget. If you look at the incomings we spent about 70 million to create a bit of depth in the squad. This was roughly the money from Tv rights. At a board fan meeting the executive sort of said that for further players sales would have to be made. The problem was also the fact that the squad had players who were happy to stay and be in a top division team, as opposed to the season before. If we had not gone up they would have gone. Also the board also viewed that when we dropped down to the championship we made 210 million in sales. Relegation means you make money from sales of players who do not want to stay. So you get parachute payments, sales and reinvest that money on potential. I think the way the board is being is that we are probably going to have a few yo yo years between the divisions.
When you look at teams like Brighton and Bournemouth they do remind me of the saints 2015/6 where the recruitement and the team was united. I think as a fan I think they thought, right we are not going to break the bank and bankrupt the club and if we go down we go down. These clubs are now better than that period we were in.
The Russell Martin idealism was great and we really played well and dominated and this meant that as fans we were losing, but we could not fault the effort of the team. We could see the development of the team. Players coming through like DIbling as well. The problem for me was that as much as we liked the guy he was a kind of victim of the boards indecision in the transfer market and by that I mean they did not try to get a top striker, not even a striker from scottish leagues or Championship.
For all the pushing and possesion play if you don't have a striker then there is no outlet and the midfield sort of stays or you pass back. Also there were other issues Armstrong being put back on the wing where he was more effective as a striker.
This transfer window has past without many comings and goings, like the club has almost resigned itself to the championship. With the exits of Walker Peters(out of contract), Flynn Downes(A Martin stalwart, who seems to be having his head turned by Ipswich) who could be relegated as well, Bella Kotchup(probably go back to Germany on cheap due to injury, Ramsdale will probably go to Newcastle as a number 2 to enable English players quota. Harwood Belis will probably go to another club as well. But many errors this season as well, the new club for him will have to work on that side of his game.
So this season we have Juric and its what we need a manager that believes in a team and is not really focused on Loyalty. We can take 8 losses out of the last 14. Just to give fans hope that they are not going down without a fight. I cant really fault the board also as they have changed the structure and now the main investor of sports republic is being more involved.
If we stand any chance of having a successful championship season we urgently need a club change of mentality that includes buying a striker or 2. The fact that we seem worried to spend money in this department is a bit of a worry. But we seem willing to spend money on potential in other areas of the pitch. I do think with the right backing and a change of the old order we could be looking at a strong team next season. Which will be a more collective rather than a set of players with agents and it will show to many fans of those players that are willing to fight.
Whether its Sheffield United, Leeds, or Burnley. Enjoy those victories while you can, the premier is a slog. Just one or 2 seasons out and the progress of the division is so fast you can get left behind quickly. Also social media and fb reels are now sort of more involved in the overall picture adding to the press critics as well. I think when you are championship you are more off radar . We March on

Josh Windass went into his side's Championship match against Derby in excellent form with a goal in each of his past four appearances.Boss Danny Rohl, mindful of the loads on players over the busy festive period, decided to rotate the number 10 to the bench for the game against the Rams before bringing him on at half-time.A managerial masterstroke?Just over 15 minutes after entering the action, Windass, who was not best pleased about not starting, got the ball about 35 yards out from his own goal, took a touch and..."I just looked up and I was initially going to try and outpace the defender but the keeper was too far out and I thought 'he's getting done here'," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.Rams goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom was beaten from 62.2 yards, and if his new year's resolution wasn't to not stray too far from his own goal before, it probably is now.Windass, meanwhile, is hopeful the goal will earn him a nomination for the Fifa Puskas Award, given to the best finish in world football in a year, after feeling he was snubbed last year for a brilliant goal at Blackburn. 2025-01-02 16:32:18 https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/branded_sport/1200/cpsprodpb/a828/live/bd4616e0-c918-11ef-94cb-5f844ceb9e30.png
