my mota OCs as olympians because i have to

mahalia - reigning gold medalist in women’s tennis but not the favorite because of the injury struggles. she has a fiery relationship with her doubles partner, fellow princeton alumni john egan. know for a mouth and a temper, plays with tactical precision and crazy speed, and is not someone you want to get in a fight with on twitter. she has a nike campaign and a racquet you can buy at dick’s sporting goods and outfits that have her fans making edits of her to meg songs on tiktok. doesn’t play about her parents. is coming into this olympics with less fire than usual, but her best playing in two years. some think she learned from the injury, some think it’s getting a new coach, but everyone can agree that it’s definitely not getting a new training partner in john egan, who seems to be the only person seeing the old mahalia on the court.

bucky - back to back tour champion. hasn’t medaled at the olympics yet, but after a roller coaster first five professional seasons, he’s held it together these past two seasons mostly due to a coaching switch. bowman seems to pick the problem kids. charming, strong, looks good in wristbands, has an undefinable relationship with a woman who could knock him unconscious with a tennis ball. he seems to linger around mahalia more and more as they fight less and less. they even stood with each other for the parade of nations. has a real shot this year.

hazel - beach volleyball, plays with sheila hartman. third olympics. got silver in her first, bronze in her second, and is chasing that elusive gold using momentum from the best professional season of her career. played on a national championship indoor team at stanford and everyone assumed she’d go pro in europe like her older brother did, but she joined the beach circuit instead. she’s found lots of success there, but there’s always been a “what if” hanging over her head. maybe this year she can prove that she’s right where she needs to be. is very friendly and welcoming to new players, but it’s no more mr. nice guy come game time

jack - two-time indoor volleyball olympian, first time beach volleyball olympian. it’s worse on his knees but easier on his shoulders. (there’s definitely something going on between him and hazel keene, right? or is it just me?)

dora - 100m and 400m hurdles. two timer. she’s fucking fast. always has her nails did, hair did, and face beat on track. always smiling. dating fellow columbia law student and olympian rosie rosenthal, a triathlete. hops the into the stands to hug him when she wins. has darren, delilah, and her grandparents’ names drawn on her shoes. wants to be a sports agent for black athletes when she retires.

rosie - proud boyfriend first, law student second, olympian third. not here to win, but brings home an honorable bronze nonetheless. dora definitely makes tiktoks about being a world-class athlete and student at the same time and rosie is in a lot of them and the world is in love with him but he’s the most married man of all time without being married.

vera - women’s eight rower, bow. top of the field in her sport, less than 5k followers on the instagram, incredible husband and beautiful, loud husky at home. she’s living the life. advocates for mental health in sports and coaches rowing when she’s not competing. rowed with ginny in college and hopes to defend her title from last olympics. has a smattering of tattoos and approx 12 piercings in each ear. married to u.s. men’s soccer player ben demarco (not playing this season due to injury but followed his wife to paris. making hab content on ig and tt)

ginny - women’s eight rower, seat 6. daughter of two olympic rowers. her two oldest brother, danny, and second youngest brother, peter (at the olympics) row quadruple sculls and quadruple sweep respectively. her youngest brother nathan is a ncaa champion eight, just like her. she and vera match their outfits each race, including hair and jewelry (up to 2 piercings, ginny ain’t doing all that).

lola - 50-200m freestyle. swims a crazy anchor leg for the women’s and mixed relays. the only person happier than her when she wins is fellow swimmer john brady.

bobbie - indoor volleyball, middle blocker. 2x ncaa player of the year and 4x first team all-american lighting europe tf up in her first professional season. but is it enough? her father, robert chambers, was on the last u.s. men’s team to win gold and she’s expected to outmatch his legacy by defending the u.s.’s title.

dolores - park skateboarder who takes on the course in wired headphones and not only does she not get tangled, she normally wins. soooooooooooooo bisexual.

summary : you live on the coastline of south carolina. danny comes to visit you for a week.

word count : 4.1k+

Danny had lived about 9 hours away from where you lived. He lived in Nashville while you lived on Edisto Beach, South Carolina.Whenever you had seen him, it was in Nashville.

Danny had made plans to come visit you at your house while he was on a break from tour. He had called you and asked if he could come visit you for a week. You missed your boyfriend, obviously you said yes.

Danny was going to be arriving at Colleton Airport at around 6:30 tonight. You changed the sheets on the bed, cleaned the bathroom, mopped, dusted, vacuumed, even cleaned out the fridge. You made room in your closet and drawers for him. You left spots on the bathroom shelves for him. You made your house homey.

You had taken a nap and woke up around 5PM. You said bye to Zoey, your Cane Corso and made your way to the airport. When you got to the airport, he had already landed and was waiting for you to arrive.

You pulled up and went inside to get him. You saw him sitting down and you went over to him and said, “Hi Danny,” and sat on his lap.

“Hi bumblebee, missed you” he said and hugged you as best he could.

“Sorry I'm late, I took a nap and I got caught in traffic.” you said to him.

“That's alright, just glad I get to see my best girl, want me to get you a coffee for the road?” he asked you. You said, “I can get my own coffee, D. I'll get you one, I was late.” You walked over to the Dunkin inside the airport and ordered. You grabbed your card and went to pay, but his card was already in the card terminal. You hit him on the chest and handed him a 20. He refused and told you to keep the money.

You got your coffee and went back to your car. He was surprised at the fact that you drove an SUV. “I wouldn't of taken you for a Bronco girl, but I dig it.” he said, as he put his bags into your trunk. You got in the driver's seat and he sat back and relaxed. Mac DeMarco’s “Ode to Viceroy'' was playing on your stereo. South Carolinian sunsets were the best, so you rolled down all the windows and opened the sunroof.

He took a video of the sunset as you drove and panned the camera over towards you. You smiled into the camera and scrunched your nose. You were stopped at a red light as you looked over to him and asked, “Are you hungry, McConkeys is still open.”

He nodded but asked if he could drop everything off first. You said yes and told him to get ready. He asked, “What do I need to get ready for?”

“Zoey.” you said.

“Who’s Zoey?” he questioned

“My Cane Corso. She's a little lover. She won't leave you alone.” you told him.

He laughed and said he wouldn't mind. You drove to your home and told him, “There's a golf course in my complex, you can rent clubs.”

He looked over at you in awe, grabbing your hand and kissing it. You pulled up to your condo and turned the car off. You opened the trunk and helped him grab his stuff.

“I'm going to change into a bathing suit with some shorts. I wanna show you the beach. I have towels in my car.” you informed him. You two walked up the stairs and heard Zoey barking. You opened the door and told him, “This is Zoey. She can either be your best friend, or your worst enemy.” He laughed and pet her head. He went into the guest bedroom and said, “I'm assuming this is where I'm staying?”

You chuckled and grabbed his shirt, “Nuh uh, you're staying with me.” He giggled and followed you to your room.

You took his suitcase and put it on the bed for him. You went into your closet and grabbed your bathing suit. You closed the closet door and let him get changed in the bedroom. You changed and put your shorts on. You asked if he was done, and he said yes. You walked out of the closet and he looked at you with stars in his eyes.

“You look great,” he said. “It's just a bathing suit and shorts, I've looked better.” you told him and laughed.

“Not to me,” he said and kissed you. You were in a SKIMS cut out monokini and jean shorts. He had on yellow trunks and you grabbed his hand and went to McConkeys.

“So, what’s McConkeys?” he asked you.

“It's called McConkey's Jungle Shack. It's a tropical themed restaurant, it's very tiny, so we might have to sit outside. They have seafood, burgers, hotdogs, I'm sure you'll find something to eat.” you told him

You drove there and the parking lot was mostly empty. You two grabbed an outdoor table and were served.

“Can I get a Yuengling with shrimp and chips, please?” Danny said to your waitress, who was eyeing him way too much for your liking. She looked over at you and you said, “I'll take a sweet tea with chicken tenders, teriyaki, with ranch, thank you.” and grabbed Danny's hand.

She looked at your hands together, sighed, and walked away. You got your food shortly and you two ate together, enjoying the sunset.

The check was brought to you and you quickly grabbed it out of his reach. You put a 50 down and told her to keep the change.

The beach was walking distance away from the shack, so you grabbed his hand and led him to the sand. You could hear the waves crashing against the shore.

You took your shoes off and held them in your hand. You let go of his hand and ran towards the edge of the water. He followed you to the edge and wrapped his arms around your neck from behind, embracing you.

“I know I just got here, but I don't want to leave.” he whispered to you.

You checked your phone and it was 8:30PM, the beach was closing in 30 minutes. “We should get back to the car, it closes in 30 minutes.” you told him.

He sighed and let go of you. You two turned around and made your way back to the car.

When you two arrived back at your home, you couldn't even make it to the door before his hands were roaming your body. You tried unlocking the door as best you could with his eager hands all over you.

You shut and locked the front door before being carried away to your bedroom.

“God, I missed you.” he said as you got off of him. You two laid together, in silence. You asked him what he wanted to do within the week he was gonna be there. He said tomorrow, he would go play golf.

You woke up the next morning and turned to his side, no Danny. You got up and put clothes on and went out to the living room. You saw a piece of paper sitting on the counter when you went to the kitchen.

Went to go play golf, don't miss me too much. - D

You smiled and grabbed your phone, asking him if he wanted lunch when he came home. You went to the grocery store and got some sandwich stuff to make for lunch. You came home and heard the shower running. You set everything out to make him a sandwich.

When he came out to the living room you asked him what he wanted on his sandwich. “I got turkey, ham, chicken, salami, american cheese, and cheddar. I also got a tomato, lettuce and some olives.” you asked him.’

“Ew, you like olives?” he asked you.

“I fucking love olives, green, black, spanish, I am an avid olive lover.” you told him.

“Olives are gross, but I'll let you enjoy your olives.” he informed you.

You laughed and he told you, “I can make my own sandwich, love.” You shook your head and said, “No, you're my guest, I'm making it for you. Tell me what you want on it.”

He got up from the kitchen table and came up behind you. He turned you around to face him and wrapped his arms around your waist. “As of right now, all I want is you.” he said and lifted you up onto the counter. He placed one of his hands on the side of your neck and placed his other on your thigh. He kissed your neck until the butterknife on the counter slid onto the floor.

He pulled away and laughed. “I don't want to stop,” he said and put his mouth back on your collarbone. You reluctantly pushed him away, “What do you want on your sandwich, D?”

“Can you put turkey with cheese, mayo, and some tomato on it for me?” He asked you. You nodded and told him to sit down. You got him a six pack of Yuengling and poured one out for him. You made his sandwich and served it to him with some cheetos.

He said thank you as you sat down next to him. “What do you want for dinner? I can go back out to the store if you want to rest.” You asked him. Zoey came over to you and you picked her up as he spoke. “You're Italian, make marinara.” he said. “I do have my Mom’s recipe. What kind of macaroni do you like? I have stuff to make meatballs too.” you told him. He perked up and said, “I like Rigatoni. Can I help you?”

You nodded, grabbed your extra large saucepot and told him to finish eating. You grabbed all of your tomato products along with an onion, garlic, fresh thyme, fresh rosemary, fresh parsley, fresh sage, a few bay leaves and most importantly, fresh basil. You got the ground beef and pork out of the fridge to make meatballs. You got the bread crumbs, sugar, half and half, italian seasoning, and an egg.

You told him how to make the meatballs and left him to do so. You added a little oil to the pot and added your whole, peeled onion and your entire head of garlic, smashed. Once those had some nice color, you added in your San Marzano whole tomatoes and squished them, along with a can of tomato puree and a can of tomato paste. You added the fresh herbs and the sugar into your sauce.

You helped Danny cook the meatballs and once they were done, you added them to the pot. You cleaned the dishes you dirtied and sat on the couch with Danny and Zoey. “What do you want to do?” you asked him. “I have puzzles, board games?” you told him.

“I can think of a few things.” he said and pulled you on top of him.

When you woke up, you heard the shower running. You got out of your comfy bed and put a shirt and shorts on. You went to stir the sauce, not wanting it to stick. You checked the time and started boiling water.

You added the macaroni and waited on the couch for Danny. He came out with his hair wet and asked if you could help him with something. You nodded, got up and followed him to the bathroom. He asked if you could put his hair product in for him.

You helped him do his hair and he grabbed onto your waist and rested his head on your chest. You wrapped your arms around his shoulders and he pulled away to pick you up. You wrapped your legs around his waist and he carried you out to the kitchen.

You two shared kisses as the macaroni was cooking. “I don't ever want to leave.” he said as he pulled away from you. “Then don't, you can stay here with me.” you told him and smiled. “I wish it was that easy, love.” he said as you pulled him back into your arms. You heard Zoey barking outside the window, at another dog who walked by. “Zoey Elizabeth, stop. That dog is not doing anything to you.” you told her. She stopped and walked over to you and jumped up onto Danny's leg. “Do you want me to take her out?” he asked you. You said, “If you want to. Her leash is over there.” You pointed to her leash and he walked over to the front door. “Come on, Zoey girl.” he said to her as she walked down the hallway to go outside.

You smiled at the sweet gesture and heard the timer go off for the macaroni. You strained the water and put the macaroni back into the pot. You brought it over to the stove and added some sauce and meatballs to it. You grabbed the romano and ricotta cheese and brought it over to your table. He came back in and hung the leash up. “Can I give her a treat?” he asked you. You nodded and got him a treat.

He gave it to Zoey and she walked away with it. You told him to sit at the table as you got him a drink. “Are you gonna let me do anything?” He asked you. You shook your head no and said, “Nope, you're my guest.” He sighed and let you serve him. You put his drink on the table in front of him and he rubbed your lower back and rubbed your ass. “Hello Waitress.” he said to you. You laughed and sat down in front of him.

You two finished up dinner and you grabbed ingredients to make a cake. You had asked Josie what his favorite cake was and she said, “Funfetti, white icing.”

You told him to go sit on the couch and to never come into the kitchen. You made his cake and frosted it for him. You told him to close his eyes as you walked him into the kitchen so he could see what you made for him.

“Open!”

“Baby, is that a cake? Do you ever get tired of being in this kitchen?”

“No, come on, slice it.”

“Should I make a wish?”

“Cut the fucking thing already, Danny.”

He cut into the cake and you grabbed two plates for you two. You sat down at the kitchen table together, savoring the time you two had.

Once you both finished, you cleaned up your mess and told him to sit on the couch. He picked Zoey up on the couch with him. You looked at him from the kitchen and asked, “Do you want to play a game or anything? I have Monopoly, Clue, Cards Against Humanity, you can look in the tv cabinet, they're all under there.”

He stood up and went over to the cabinet. He grabbed a puzzle and said, “How about a puzzle?” You nodded and got yourself some water. He opened the box and laid out all the pieces on the table.

About 50 pieces in, he swiped the puzzle off the table and said, “Screw the puzzle,” and picked you up.

You woke up at around 8AM and saw Danny asleep next to you. He had his back turned to you, so you moved his hair off his bare back and gave him a light kiss. He stirred awake and turned to you. He pulled you closer to him by your waist and said, “Did I hurt you last night?” You shook your head no and kissed him. He pulled you on top of him and played with the hem of your shorts.

“We should probably get ready,” he said in your ear. You chose a black hoodie and black leggings.

You and Danny were driving up to Charleston to go to the Aquarium. They opened up at 9 AM, but it would probably take about an hour to drive there. You two got dressed and headed for Charleston.

You stopped at a local breakfast restaurant and ate there. Before you left, Danny offered to drive. You let him drive the rest of the way and sat in the passenger seat, quiet. He asked if you were alright and you said, “Fine, I'm just tired.” He put his hand on your thigh and listened to the music you were playing.

When you got there, you found a place to park and got out of the car. You pulled the tickets up on your phone and showed admissions. They let you in and Danny said, “I'll be paying you back for those tickets.”

You laughed and said, “The fuck you are,” and continued walking in front of him. Sadly, they had the river otter enclosure closed due to renovations, so you couldn't see them. The two of you walked around the aquarium together, saddened that he had to leave the next day.

Around 1, you heard Danny’s stomach rumbling next to you. “Hungry?” you asked him. He nodded and you led the both of you to the cafe that was in the aquarium.

You had gone to the bathroom while Danny ordered your food. When you came back out, you saw a few girls looking at him. When you walked back out, they paid no attention to the fact that you were there with him.

When you had finished eating, the same group of girls looked you up and down and scoffed. As you were leaving the cafe, you reached your hand around and grabbed Danny’s ass. “What was that for?!” he exclaimed. “Group of girls were staring at you, and had to show them you were taken,” you explained to him. “I love it when you're jealous.” he said and grabbed your chin as you walked out.

When you and Danny got home, you played Monopoly and took a nap. When you woke up, Danny was still asleep beside you. You decided not to wake him up and went to make dinner.

You left him a note and went to the store down the street. You grabbed everything to make your beef and broccoli. You got home and started cooking everything. You left the bedroom door open and let Zoey up on the bed to lay with Danny. You could tell Zoey liked him, she cuddled next to him as he slept.

You sat down next to him on the bed and moved his bangs out of his face. “Danny? Honey, it's dinner time.” you quietly to him.

He stirred awake and put his hand on your arm. “Why didn't you wake me, I would’ve helped you.”

You shook your head and said, “You need sleep, Danny” He rubbed your arm and sat up. “I have something I need to take care of, in the bathroom. That low cut shirt is doing something to me.” he said. You laughed, got up, and tended to dinner. You could hear him moaning in the bathroom. You also saw Zoey, head lifted up, ears perked up at the sound of him.

Once dinner was done, you made him a plate and called for him. “Danny! Once you're done thinking about me in the bathroom, dinner’s ready!” You heard him yell out a thank you as you sat down with the drinks in your hands. He walked out of your room, fully dressed. He sat down and thanked you for dinner.

Usually, Zoey ate the same time you did. You made her dinner and fed it to her out of her slow feeder. She drank water and went to sit on the couch.

You finished up dinner and he offered to clean the dinner dishes. “You have done more than enough while I've been here, sit.” he said, firmly. “Okay, I'll go take a shower.” you said to him. “No! Not without me. Sit on the couch.”

You did exactly what he said and sat on the couch, waiting for him. “We never finished our puzzle last night, Mister.” you said to him.

He finished the dishes and walked over to where you were. He stuck his hand out and said, “Come on, now we can shower.”

You grabbed his hand and he pulled you off the couch. He picked you up and you wrapped your legs around his waist. You laughed as he ran to the bathroom.

He put you on the bathroom counter and took your shirt off for you. “I like that bra. Send me pictures of you wearing it next time.” he said to you. He unclipped your bra and pulled you off the counter to pull your leggings down. He got onto his knees and kissed down your body. Once he got to the waistband, he put his hands on your hips and looked up at you as he kissed your stomach. Luckily, you had your phone right next to you on the counter. You pulled up the camera and quickly snapped a picture of him, brown eyes looking at you from below, hands on your hips. You grabbed one of his hands and pulled him up so he could stand on his feet. You ripped his shirt off and viciously made out with him. He leaned forward and put his hand on the mirror behind you as you two made out.

You put your legs around his waist as he lifted you up off the counter and bent down to turn the shower on. He stepped into the shower, you still around him. You kissed his neck as he said, “We both need to shower, come on. I know you don't want to but we have to.” You reluctantly got off of him and continued with your shower.

Danny had gotten out first as you continued with your shower. You got out and got dressed. You heard Danny in the living room on his phone.

“How do I tell her that I'm going on a six month world tour and won't be able to see her for that long? Sam, she's gonna be heartbroken. We see each other at least once every month.” Danny said. You had been introduced to his bandmates a long time ago, so you knew who he was talking to.

“I'm not going to be an asshole and not tell her, Sam! That would kill me and her! I need to tell her, I just don't know how. Should I do it at the airport tomorrow when she drops me off? Should I do it tonight before bed?” he asked Sam.

“I'll do it tonight. Do you think she'll be mad at me? I hope she doesn't get mad at me. I just love her so much. I don't want to hurt her.” he said. You came out of your room and said, “Danny, it would've never hurt me. You have a job. A reputation. It wouldn't of made me mad in the slightest.”

He whipped his head towards you and said, “How much did you hear?”

“All of it.” you told him.

“I didn't want to keep it from you, you're a part of my life too. Jita and Dana want to make a Greta girlfriends group chat, and they want you in it, I sent Jita your number. They said they will share tour dates. We are going to Greenville next month, I know you're from there. We can get you a pass, so you can come to the show.” he said to you.

You sat right next to him on the couch and said, “I'd want nothing more than that.” He grabbed your face and kissed you. “Let's go to bed, yeah?” he asked you. You nodded and got up and walked towards your room. “Your ass looks great in those pants, babe.” he said, behind you.

He laid down in the bed and you crawled on top of him, your favorite place to sleep. “What time is your flight tomorrow?” you asked him. “9.” he said. You started crying and he kissed your forehead. “Don't cry, bumblebee. I'm gonna come back soon. I promise. We can facetime every night.” he said and rubbed your back. You looked at him and he pulled you up closer to his face. You wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed him.

When you woke up, you saw Danny packing all of his stuff up. “Hi,” you said to him, very unenthusiastic. He turned around and walked over to your side of the bed. “I know, I don't want to leave either,” he said and hugged you.

He pulled away and continued packing. You left the house around 6:30, so he wouldn't be late. You two ate breakfast at the same dunkin you went to when he first got there. You finished your breakfast sandwiches and sat with him near the terminal.

He turned to you and whispered in your ear, “Quickie in the bathroom?”

Film Review - Wild Card

Continuing my efforts to get caught up on film reviews as 2024 begins, we add to the Jason Statham run by taking a look at the 2015 film Wild Card…

Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):

Nick Wild is a recovering gambling addict who takes odd jobs in Las Vegas as a "chaperone" (his version of a bodyguard) to support his addiction. After helping a client impress a woman, he accepts a proposition from a young man, Cyrus Kinnick, to show him around Vegas and provide protection while he gambles.

While eating at a diner, Nick's waitress friend Roxy hands him a message from a woman he knows, Holly, who wants him to stop by her house. Holly, a professional escort, explains she had a date the previous night at the Golden Nugget. Afterward, she was brutally raped and beaten by three unknown men in their hotel room. Holly asks Nick to find out who they are so that she can sue them.

Nick discovers that the man responsible for raping Holly is Danny DeMarco, a gangster, who had two of his thugs dump her in a hospital car park. Nick goes to the hotel to confront DeMarco and a confrontation develops, resulting in Nick overpowering DeMarco and his men, who are then tied up. Nick calls Holly, who contemplates castrating DeMarco, who then breaks down and begs her forgiveness. Holly decides to just take the $50,000 from DeMarco's desk and leaves.

Holly splits the money with Nick and leaves Las Vegas. Nick takes Cyrus to a casino and whilst playing blackjack with dealer friend Cassandra, Nick goes on a huge winning streak with the next dealer, amassing over a half a million dollars. But when he goes to the cashier, he has a sudden anxiety attack and decides to keep on gambling, eventually losing all his winnings (as well as his original $25,000) on a single blackjack bet with Cassandra. The next morning, Cyrus, revealed to be a self-made millionaire, wants Nick to mentor him on being brave, but Nick declines. At the bar, DeMarco's men arrive to deliver Nick to DeMarco, but Nick fends them off.

Nick meets with Baby, the mafia boss of Las Vegas. Baby has received a complaint from DeMarco, who claims that Nick broke into his hotel room, pistol-whipped him, and killed two of his men – all to fund his gambling addiction. Baby takes Nick to a room with DeMarco, where Nick tells his side of the story: that DeMarco killed his own men, to save face after begging for his life, and that DeMarco bears a cut on his penis. Baby tells DeMarco to drop his pants to prove Nick wrong, but he refuses and leaves.

At the local diner, Cyrus offers Nick a check for $500,000 and a plane ticket to Corsica for what he has learned from Nick. DeMarco and his men appear in the diner. Cyrus shows his newfound manliness by singing loudly as a distraction so Nick can escape. Nick thinks about his sailboat and then kills the thugs and DeMarco with his utensils behind the diner.

Afterwards, Cyrus insists Nick take the check and the ticket, and Nick accepts. Nick then drives out of Las Vegas.

Review:

According to Wikipedia, this film is an adaptation of the novel Heat by William Goldman, who also wrote this film’s screenplay, and also a remake of the Burt Reynolds film Heat from the 1980’s that is likewise adapted from the novel of the same name. Not having read the novel or seen the Burt Reynolds adaptation myself, I can only review this film based on its merits as a stand-alone film. How does it do in that capacity? I would say not bad, but also not brilliant.

So, what does the film get right? Well, it’s got a decent plot that’s fairly well-acted, and the cast do well, though outside of Statham, most are not on my personal list of actors I’d know if you said their names. The only two I can recall from other works are Jason Alexander, who once had a guest appearance in Star Trek: Voyager, and of course Stanley Tucci, whose credits in the past decade or so include Captain America: The First Avenger, Transformers: Age of Extinction, and the 2017 live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. The action set-pieces are also well-performed, and yet, there aren’t all that many of them, which is the first of the film’s flaws.

The second flaw to the film is that the plot doesn’t gel with my understanding of addiction from other narrative works, such as the West Wing. My understanding is that addicts are wired to seek out whatever stimuli they’re addicted to, and any relapse is almost always a hard one. In other words, once they start back on anything they’re addicted to, they will not stop because their brains aren’t generally wired to accept that there’s such a thing as “enough”, or else their level of “enough” is far above what is healthy. It takes extraordinary willpower to resist the urge to relapse, and once they’re going through a relapse, it’s even harder still to reassert that willpower.

During the film, we see Nick manage to get some money, then when he starts gambling, he has moments where he stops before then resuming. Surely, if he is an addict in the middle of surrendering to his addiction, those pauses wouldn’t exist. Granted, I’m comparing one fictional example of addiction to another and have little first-hand-knowledge, but it strikes me that this is inconsistent behaviour to what I know. Coupled with the relative lack of action scenes, this makes the film a bit underwhelming compared to other efforts Statham has made in the action film genre.

I do have to give the film credit for showing a rape victim get even with her rapist at one point in the film, as that’s an issue the entertainment industry needs to do more to tackle by treating the matter with some sensitivity and giving victims a sense of empowerment and agency. In fact, given some of the news stories in recent years about the mis-treatment of actresses by certain individuals in Hollywood, I would say the entertainment industry owes it to the victims of that mistreatment to better tackle this issue both on-screen and off-screen. This all being said, I question the wisdom of the story part where Statham’s character fakes getting beaten up so a client can make his girlfriend really fall for him by looking tough. Fairly sure blokes that have to resort to silly stunts like that to get or retain relationships don’t deserve them, and films should probably not encourage that as a relationship tactic.

So, on the whole, it’s an ok film if you just want to veg out on a Jason Statham film for a while in general, but some of what is shown between the action moments is variable in terms of both quality and merit. My end score for this one is 6 out of 10.
