You often have to remind Marble Danish Cookie of small things. Nothing too big, but you often carry around a notebook to do so.

Sometimes he'll give you his coat if you seem to be getting cold. He doesn't listen to any of your objections, you need it after all.

What do you think of the argument that royals do a lot of behind the scenes work that's not counted. Danish press is talking about how Fred has only worked 19 days since his coronation about 100 days ago. Personally I don't know what to say about that. A royals job is to be a representative in public, I highly doubt Fred is the one doing ceo type work for his patronages like the royal run. So whats do you think is going on with him?

I don't really support that argument for a few reasons:

Firstly, all royals do work behind the scenes. To use the UK as an example, people often say William and Kate's low numbers are ok because they do work behind the scenes. But Anne can do 400 engagements while still doing behind the scenes work. What would make people believe she's not doing anything other than rocking up at events? lol.

Secondly, as you say, the "behind the scenes" work isn't quite what people think. They don't do the leg work to plan events, they don't usually have any formal leadership role in the charities they run, they aren't personally writing the captions on their Instagram pages. There is other work that goes into these events but a large proportion won't be carried out by them personally, they just give the rubber stamp. However...

...the third and most important point is that even if we say that all of those things above are incredibly important, the royals choose not to share them. They choose not to put them in the royal calendar. They choose not to release pictures of them. And there might be very good reasons for that. But the reality is that if we are trying to come up with some data which we can use for comparison, we have to have some kind of inclusion criteria. We don't know how much work they do or don't do from day to day behind the scenes so we cannot establish any kind of figure. We have to use the data they give us.

So basically I don't think that the work they do behind the scenes is worthless or unimportant by any means. But I also don't think that we can make it a factor when we look at engagement numbers because we just can't put a number on it in any fair way.

As for Fred, you can't really compare engagement numbers across different families - we covered that in Episode 95 of the podcast - so it's difficult to establish his levels. But the articles I saw weren't particularly critical of Frederik, they were just commenting. He's only been monarch for 100 days and time will tell what kind of monarch he'll be. Ultimately the Danish people will decide. What I think of his work rate - what anyone who isn't from the Kingdom of Denmark thinks about his work rate - is secondary to what Danish people think about it so something might seem low to me but until the Danes get upset it's not really my place to tell them how to feel.

I'm not sure what prompted this but thank you for the ask, nonnie! The easy answer is that I'm Swedish & it's in the DNA of Swedes & Danes to hate one another. There, ask answered!

Okay, no, to be serious. There is this joke amongst the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Åland, Iceland, Faroe Islands & Greenland) that Denmark is the USA of the Nordics & among the Scandinavian royals (Sweden, Norway & Denmark), the Danish have always been my least favourites. I'll post a deeper discussion around my thoughts under the cut & people; remember that these are my personal opinions. I'm not talking facts or trying to be objective here.

Not just the fact that they've done some questionable things (the same could be said for many of the European royals), but it has always struck me weird how borderline worshipped the Danish royals are - especially Margrethe & Mary. It reminds me a bit of the stan culture around some singers & bands where the fans don't simply like the person; they adore them & to the level where you're not even allowed to criticise the person. Then we have Margrethe's approval rating - in a democratic country (Denmark) & its territories (Greenland & Faroe Islands), there is no way someone can continuously have around 80% or higher approval rating.

Up to 2022, I didn't necessarily dislike them & I had no personal issue with Margrethe. The Danish royals weren't my cup of tea, but I found Margrethe very cool as a person & I still do to some extent. There was this public narrative of Frederik, the golden boy, Mary, who could do nothing wrong & Joachim having difficulty finding his role & purpose in the family. As someone who has grown up with Nordic tabloid culture, I assumed it was a Victoria vs. Madeleine situation where the tabloids make a hen out of a feather & try to create drama where there is none. Then that statement around the titles of Joachim's children was published & all the puzzle pieces came together for me...

Now I've seen a lot of people here on Tumblr point towards Nikolai & claim it's all his fault. But that guy has been working as a model under the name of Prince Nikolai since at least 2018. Maybe even earlier, I can't remember. But anyway, the only time his grandma told him off was when he was doing ad work for some car brand & used his royal title. If his modelling career was the problem, Margrethe would have done something years ago & not suddenly, out of the blue, make a decision in autumn 2022.

No, for me, the puzzle pieces all fell together. Joachim struggling to find his place within the Royal House & no one really helping him carve out a position for himself; it being public knowledge that Margrethe favoured his first wife; Marie saying that it wasn't her or Joachim's choice to move to Paris & they weren't happy about it; Marie being painted as the bitter step-mother who wouldn't allow Nikolai & Felix to be with their father & instead, they were kept close to their grandmother; & yeah, the car crash that was Margrethe stripping Joachim's children of their titles a.k.a. she legally changed her grandchildren's names behind their backs without talking to them about it. These are just some instances from the last couple of years that were at the top of my mind.

I've mentioned it in messages to @cambridgemadness @lizisanamimal & @world-of-wales (maybe other people as well, sorry if I forgot to mention you), but to me, it feels very much like Margrethe favouring one son over the other & also doing everything she can to coddle him. It's not just the Nordic tabloids pitting family members against one another. It's very much based on Margrethe's behaviour & her leadership.

Please don’t worry about how quickly you respond—I truly don’t mind at all. After all, I’m the one reaching out, so if anyone should be worrying, it’s me, haha. One of my friends takes even longer to reply, if that makes you feel better.

The word was “lak” (I think? My memory is questionable). They explained to me that it’s meant to be a derogatory slang term in the country I’m currently living in. I’m not sure if it’s used worldwide, though, haha.

Gaslighting myself happens when I need to take action but can’t. I use self-deception, convincing myself to push through tasks or meet goals. I’m tricking myself into believing something that isn’t entirely true to make progress—like thinking, “if I don’t do this, certain consequences, such as this and that, will happen,” when in reality, that’s not true at all.

Dexter’s habit of avoiding conflict is relatable. The poor man truly needs people who understand him without him needing to explain himself—which made his brother’s death particularly difficult for me—at least initially? I think he’d stay guarded at first, but over time, he’d start opening up once he realised that his vulnerability won’t be judged as harshly as he fears. I also find his subtle—well, subtle in a sociopathic sense—love for his sister to be really admirable.

I also thought his brother died too quickly, though I wasn’t entirely surprised. Dexter was caught between choosing him or his sister, and in the end, he deliberately chose his sister. One could see that as selfless, perhaps. He had the opportunity to build a life with someone who truly understood him, yet he chose his sister instead. But was it really selflessness? Or was it simply a reflection of the affection he felt for her, which he didn’t seem to have for his brother? It’s a very complicated matter, I think.

And yes, I finished watching Arcane! Well, first of all, I actually really thought Viktor was dead at the end of Act II, so I was surprised and delighted to see him return in Act III. I found his character development a tad amusing because he has an unhealthy amount of parallels to my favourite character from BSD, which made me predict almost anything he did and what happened to him. The Powder/Vi/Vander plotline was very heartbreaking—they deserved so much better. I liked Jayce’s heroism, and I liked the parallel universe aspect. Did you notice the intro always slightly changing, by the way? I would’ve skipped it after watching it once if my brother didn’t force me to watch it every single time, hahaha.

Somehow, the series began as a political and social dilemma, grappling with issues of power and inequality, but eventually evolved into a blend of witches, mages, alchemy, and magic-infused technology. All mixed in a pot—and somehow, it worked.

Interesting, I do believe "lak" is a regional slang term (Germany, if memory serves me right?), but now I am curious about the definition.

I imagine having false consequences as an incentive would be stressful, seeing how you utilise fear as your primary motivating force. Perhaps motivating yourself with a reward rather than a perceived punishment would be less emotionally taxing, assuming you haven't tried that already?

I believe there are many reasons why Dexter killed his brother, and it definitely is complicated. Dexter almost threw 20+ years of the Code away and told Brian, "Yes. I’m ready to join you. But I won’t kill Deb. I’m very fond of her. Perhaps if Brian was a little less possessive and allowed her to live, he and Dexter could have run off together being Murder Brothers. Dexter loved his sister, but he was very nearly willing to leave her until Brian forced Dexter's hand and ultimately prioritised his own vision over Dexter's wants by attempting to kill her himself (twice, for that matter), essentially trying taking away Dexter's ability to choose any other option but him.

I think Dexter did hold affection for Brian, seeing how he was upset that he "had" to kill him and held no enjoyment in the act the way he did with his usual victims. It even bothered him so much that he had difficulty killing people after. Dexter wanted to be free so bad, but he also cared about Debra. His brother's conditions were too black and white, and Dexter ultimately could not fully embrace his true self with him if it meant killing her.

Yes, Arcane is a uniquely beautiful and incredibly well-made show. I have been forcing my coworkers to watch it. I didn't notice the intro changing (I skipped it after watching it once as well), but I saw comparison videos of all of the hidden shots. There are so many details, Easter eggs, and story even with background characters who don't have dialogue. I am both inconsolable about the ending and in awe. I don't know how familiar you are with the characters outside of Arcane, but there is an endearing official short story League of Legends has for Viktor.

Who? Margrethe? She does loads, mostly visual arts. She did the illustrations for the Danish edition of Lord of the Rings (with her work signed off by the big man, Tolkien himself). She makes embroidery and textiles for churches around the country. She designs monograms for other royals (like Ingrid Alexandra recently). She has done costumes and sets for over a dozen stage productions at Tivoli over the years, and worked on a few movies. Last year she worked on Tivoli’s production of The Nutcracker and did sets and costumes for a Danish Netflix show!

I've got a few underrated/underused characters that I looove, most of them which this side of the fandom tends to dislike I'm afraid vjfnbjgnb. I'm a sucker for Peter and then I love the versions of Edmund (Avery Jr), Aurora, Charity and Igor that I've done vjnfbjgb. They do exist just a bit in my head tho I'm gonna be honest. I'd love to do a seabunny (Igor/Charity) fic someday cause I just love them!!! I also just love writing Aurora but idk if she'll ever end up in a fic of mine, she just doesn't mingle with the characters I usually write.

I don't know what to say about Aurora, there's so much. I love her,, my lovely autistic lady. Her special interest is telescopes even though she knows a tonne about stars as well. She loves cats, she's an only child (if you don't count the cat her parents essentially treat like a second child), she's Muslim, she's half Egyptian on her dad's side and half Sierra Leonean on her mum's side!! She makes pros and cons lists before doing anything, she's blunt, she loves deeply!!! She's besties with Charity and Wilhelm (though the latter is just,, it's complicated and one-sided and oh that man 110% haunts her). I enjoy starrynight (Aurora/Severus) a surprising amount but this is 100% a pansexual woman who'd be open to anyone. There's just something about these two and their parallel play kind of dates and their understanding of each other fjnvjfnbjg

Peter!!! I'm still not over the thought of suburban dad Peter with a wife who finds the rest of the marauders endearing but incredibly annoying. Peter who drives a sky blue Prius when he takes his son to soccer practice and his daughter to ballet like??? I love it. He's half Danish on his mum's side and half British on his dad's side. One of his favourite things to do when meeting new people is trying to get them to pronounce Danish words. He slept with a stuffed animal for many years. He started losing his hair early and it's one of his biggest insecurities. Plays Santa for the kids around Christmas because Remus lost his Santa privileges after he was seen snogging Sirius with the suit on. Not just on his own but also with like seabunny!!! Like where on the scale of shitty person was he in the beginning of the war vs after he spent more time with Charity who was eager to share all her muggle knowledge etc. They died within a year of each other!!! Also!!! With how isolated Durmstrang is I have this headcanon that Igor's afraid of birds. When I say it like that it makes no sense but!! In the wizarding world owls are the main way to communicate so if you can't use an owl for whatever reason it can be quite isolating and thus it all works with how he's managed to isolate the school vfjnbjgnbjgn can you tell I think about this in like a super deep way? He's the youngest in the family and the only boy with three sisters. He was a mama's boy and he used to sneak down creaky stairs to crawl into her bed. He's incredibly nonchalant when it comes to most things. I think he spent his last year at Hogwarts on an exchange program since it's alluded that he's got some sort of memory at Hogwarts and I doubt it's from his time as headmaster.
