To the Jew first and also to the Gentile

The phrase, "To the Jew first and also to the Gentile" (from Romans 1:16) was not an ongoing principle. It had a very literal, historical meaning, that was fulfilled in the first century. It does not still apply today, because, according to Galatians, Ephesians, Colossians, and other verses in Romans, there is no Jew or Gentile in the New Covenant (see list of verses below). The Gentiles became fellow heirs, because the true children of Abraham are children of faith. Christ took the 2 groups and made one new man, ending the separation. But there was a progression to the story in order to get to that point. The Gospel was very literally to be offered to the Jews first, for a period of 7 years....

"He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’

(1 week of years, Daniel 9:27)

"In the middle of the ‘seven’ He will put an end to sacrifice and offering."

We see this again (to the Jew first) in Luke when Jesus told the disciples,

"and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Lk 24:47)

And also in Acts 13:

"Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: 'We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.'" (Acts 13:46)

So halfway through the 7 years, He (Jesus) would put an end to sacrifice and offering (by dying on the Cross). This left another 3 1/2 years that the Gospel needed to be preached only to the Jews, in order to "confirm a covenant with many" and fulfill Daniel 9:27. This is exactly what happened. It took another 3 1/2 years before Philip went to a city in Samaria to preach the Gospel (Acts 8:5). Then the apostles sent Peter and John to Samaria as well, and the Gospel continued to spread like wildfire through the known world.

“To the Jew first and also to the Gentile” literally happened, in order to fulfill the Old Testament Scriptures. Now there is no longer Jew or Gentile, but we are all one in Christ. (Gal 3, Col 3)

Eph 2:15-16 “He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself ONE NEW PEOPLE from the two groups. Together as ONE BODY, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.”

Eph 2:19-21 “So now YOU GENTILES ARE NO LONGER STRANGERS AND FOREIGNERS. YOU ARE CITIZENS along with all of God’s holy people. YOU ARE MEMBERS OF GOD’S FAMILY. TOGETHER, WE ARE HIS HOUSE, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.”

Col 1:27 “For God wanted them to know that THE RICHES AND GLORY OF CHRIST ARE FOR YOU GENTILES, TOO. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.”

Gal 3:7 "Understand, then, that THOSE WHO HAVE FAITH are children of Abraham."

Rom 4:11 "So then, he (Abraham) is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them."

Rom 9:6-8 "It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children.” (In other words, it’s about believing in Jesus. Those are the true children of Abraham.) Parenthesis added.

Rom 2:28-29 "A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code."
