As servers, women are at times subjugated to harassment and demeaning behavior. They’re supposed to smile, go through with it, all for a good tip to keep living. For Libby, that’s no option. So what does she do? Dumps a Sangria right on her customer, Perry Ackerman. Bad. Ass. Consent is the underlying theme of the novel, with sprinkles of racism as well as mental illness. The book introduces a doctor who brings up many helpful methods and ways of consent and ways to notice when someone doesn’t want to go too far. (Body language, tone-they all matter). There are also discussions on rape and the many complexities of it. The lines can be blurred and this novel really colored them in. I loved Libby from the second she showed Perry what happens when you mess with her. She’s perceptive, diligent, and all around brave for doing the unthinkable. The side characters were a joy as well. I loved how supportive Emma was toward Libby and Yaz was just adorable with her aura hugs. A sweet careful romance that involves stomping, a kiss quota, and honest conversations about the future after high school. Talk about real. She’s far from perfect though which I also admire. She’s full of contradictions and sometimes may not say something in the right way when addressing the boys in her life. But there’s no perfect way to address accusations of rape. @danielleyoungeullman NAILED the high feeling of working at a busy restaurant. As a past bus boy, I can one hundred percent relate to the high of getting off work and still being energized. Bottom line: NO. MEANS. NO. And if you don’t treat female servers, or male ones, with respect, you might experience payback with a side of fries!
