Unsolicited thoughts from today regarding the Iga-Coco match:

(I hate how I feel the need to do this but)

-I said earlier that once the head to head is fixed, Iga-Coco can be an amazing rivalry for women’s tennis and I was proved right. Couldn’t actually watch the match because it was so early for me and I had things to do, but some of the points from the highlights were absolutely crazy. These are the two best defenders on tour, and a match where they are equally competitive was a sight to behold. That was the biggest takeaway I got from the match and that SHOULD be the biggest takeaway

-I’m not as worried about Iga as some people are. She produced some amazing points and was better than expected with her volleys, but just struggled to hold at times and made dumb errors. She had chances to win both sets. Coco was just playing out of her mind today, and I think she’s the favorite to win AO (I felt this way even before the United Cup but she further proved it). Iga still had marked improvements this tournament, but the wear and tear of so many competitive matches and mixed doubles was gonna get to her

-The Iga-Coco h2h was only lopsided because most of their matches were on slow courts. All three of Coco’s wins were on fast hard courts, and she’s much younger than Iga and has a quicker rate of improvement. That doesn’t mean Iga is regressing, it only means Coco is getting better and playing in favorable conditions

-I’m ngl the timing and reasoning for the MTO was a bit weird but I’m not gonna think much of it because I genuinely don’t think Iga is the type of person to fuck around with this stuff. I just hope she’s healthy. And also miss me with that “classless celebration” and “classless handshake” bullshit, I truly could not care less

-As someone who has advocated for women’s issues before, it’s genuinely sad to see Danielle Collins start one sided beef for no reason

dont know if you’ve seen it, but collins was very disrespectful at the end of her match towards the australian crowd and i wanted to know your thoughts on it

i haven’t seen it, im waiting for them to upload it. my mum saw the end of it and said that the crowd were booing her and she was being snarky back in her interview and with gestures? i don’t know if the booing started first or if she was snarky first, though. I will have to expand on this once I watch it but i will say now that:

1) the crowd should not have been booing her, it’s never okay to boo a player when it’s a whole crowd against one person.

2) danielle is not doing herself any favours engaging with the crowd in such a way. i don’t think we should expect her to be totally reactionless, but egging the crowd on isn’t going to achieve anything

3) destanee is both playing for Australia AND Samoa/Pacific Islanders as a whole. I think the crowd should be given some leeway in their disappointment given how much Destanee’s achievements mean to them.
