RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7

Relished the one-on-one battle with Sofiane Boufal and easily came out on top, making countless challenges to shackle the Southampton winger.

Needs to work on the consistency of his end product while his shooting leaves plenty to be desired, but the youngster was one of United’s better performers.

CB: Victor Lindelof – 5

Looked the most assured of United’s rearguard in the opening stages but was exposed in the air, losing a number of headers to Danny Ings before being dominated by Vestergaard for the goal.

CB: Harry Maguire – 6

Classy with the ball at his feet, picking out plenty of forward passes that got United moving.

Solid defensively, demonstrated by Southampton’s decision to target Lindelof instead as the game went on.

LB: Ashley Young – 6

Called up for the injured Luke Shaw and put in a fully-committed display, never shirking a challenge and receiving his fair share of bumps and scraps.

CM: Paul Pogba – 5

Started the match in a deep role, meaning he saw a lot of the ball but did little with it.

Some of the Frenchman’s passing was particularly wayward and while he improved after the break, it was still another frustrating display from the World Cup winner.

RAM: Andreas Pereira – 6

Was bright in the opening 45 minutes, showing some lovely touches in tight areas, but fluffed his lines with a complete mis-kick when attempting to cross and was subbed shortly after.

CAM: Juan Mata – 7

One of United’s star men in the opening half, playing on the turn and finding pockets of space that caused Southampton plenty of problems.

His run created the space for James’ strike but the Spaniard faded as the game went on.

LAM: Daniel James – 8

A stunning strike continued James’ impressive goalscoring run and the Welsh winger could have had another when he cut in from the left minutes later.

A real bright spark in an unimaginative United display and continued to terrorise Cedric Soares until the final whistle.

ST: Marcus Rashford – 4

Didn’t look confident with the ball at his feet, despite having plenty of opportunities to test Gunn, and struck straight at the Saints keeper when slipped through.

Spared his blushes by the linesman’s flag after missing a simple header and was caught on his heels when he should have been attacking Wan-Bissaka’s delivery.

Also passed the ball straight out of play in a below-par performance.

James the one bright spot for Man United as team struggle vs. Southampton

With Alexis Sanchez now on loan at Inter, Craig Burley examines how it went so wrong for him at Manchester United.

A laboured second-half display saw Manchester United relinquish a half-time lead to draw 1-1 against an energetic Southampton side that played the final 20 minutes with 10 men.

Positives

An excellent afternoon for two of United’s new boys — they have a real player on their hands in Daniel James, who took his goal in glorious fashion early on, while Aaron Wan-Bisakka was pretty flawless at right-back.

Negatives

The Paul Pogba problem isn’t going away anytime soon, and the Frenchman’s poor showing today suggests his mind — as well as his long-term future — may be elsewhere.

Manager rating out of 10

6 — Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has work to do on an attack that was ultimately lacking in creativity outside of James, and the manager could have done more to provide support for an often-isolated Marcus Rashford up front.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK David De Gea, 6 — The 28-year-old made a great one-handed save to deny Danny Ings, but had no chance against a towering Jannik Vestergaard header just seconds after.

DF Ashley Young, 6 — The less expansive of the two full-backs, but Young was rarely troubled at the back by a Southampton attack that looked more centrally for a pathway to goal.

DF Harry Maguire, 6 — Booked for a late tackle on Che Adams in the first half, but an otherwise it was a composed display by the former Leicester man.

DF Victor Lindelof, 6 — Given a tough examination by Southampton’s aggressive high-press but the Swede came through it and looked assured. However, he will be disappointed to be beaten in the air for Southampton’s leveller.

DF Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 7 — Enjoyed plenty of freedom down United’s right and provided some testing balls into the Southampton penalty area, while sparing no change in his defensive third as Saints tried several players on the left.

MF Scott McTominay, 7 — Provided a vital block to stop an on-target Sofiane Boufal shot in the first half, and the 22-year-old is beginning to look like a player who feels like he belongs in a Manchester United shirt.

MF Paul Pogba, 6 — A deep-lying midfield role gave Pogba license to get on the ball and dictate play, but the Frenchman was sloppy in possession, and United fans will once again be demanding a lot more from the World Cup winner. Improved when pushed further forward in the final 20 minutes.

MF Andreas Pereira, 5 — Handed his first start since the opening weekend of the season, but the Brazilian will have work to do if he wants make it a regular gig after an anonymous showing that was littered with errors.

MF Juan Mata, 6 — The Spaniard’s intelligence in the final third is a huge asset when he’s on form, and he showed some lovely touches in the first half but faded as an attacking influence as Southampton began to turn the screw in the second half.

Daniel James was the one bright spot for United.

MF Daniel James, 8 — A stunning right-footed drive set United on their way early on, and his United colleagues were always looking to the Welshman as they looked to make further inroads in the final third. A couple of poor touches in promising positions in the closing stages showed the 21-year-old is still somewhat raw, but he was United’s best player.

ST: Marcus Rashford, 5 — A poor day at the office for United’s No. 10, with nothing quite coming off for him. He did force a couple of second-half saves from Southampton stopper Angus Gunn but they were comfortable.

Substitutes

Jesse Lingard, 6 — Often a figure of criticism among United fans for failing to make a difference in the final third, but his introduction for the final quarter of the game gave his side a lift.

Nemanja Matic, 6 — Brought on to take up the deeper midfield role as United looked to bring Paul Pogba into the game further up the pitch.

Mason Greenwoord, N/A — Gave the side a lift with a lovely shot, which was saved. Will get more time.

Man Utd news: Maguire demands Red Devils adopt Cantona arrogance after Southampton draw | Football | Sport

Manchester United fans still sing affectionately about ‘King’ Eric Cantona, the hero who helped them win that first title in 26 years, way back in the mists of time in 1993.

They were singing it again on Saturday at St Mary’s, just days after the enigmatic Frenchman puzzled the football world by quoting Shakespeare as he won the Uefa Presidents’ Award.

But Harry Maguire believes that this current Manchester United need to adopt a bit of that Cantona arrogance, that familiar shirt collar-up strut about their game.

As this current Red Devils team dropped another precious two points down on the South coast, there was plenty of talent on show from the sparkling skills of the likes of Daniel James and Aarron Wan-Bissaka.

But not enough arrogance.

The new United centre-back said: “It’s another game where we’ve deserved to win. We’ve created the majority of the chances and we’ve dropped two points.

“The start of our season has been like that. We deserved to win at Wolves and then we conceded two shot against Palace and they scored two.

“We can definitely improve, especially on the ball. We gave the ball away far too much.

“We were too sloppy and we need to improve on that and show arrogance and be confident on the ball. We’re Man United – we want to control games.

“There were spells where we didn’t control the game, and we got punished.”

United did get better after Saints had Kevin Danso sent off – but not by enough, and this morning they lie seven points off the top, with just one win from their opening four games.

Maguire added: “That’s how we should play all the way through the game. You’ve seen the confidence of the players when they went down to ten men.

“They seemed like they wanted the ball, everyone wanted to create a chance. We did enough in that 15 minutes to score a goal.

“We’ve got to be more clinical. We had numerous crosses, numerous balls across the box, we just needed to stick one in. We’ll keep working hard, keep improving.”

United had just the right start at St Mary’s, as the excellent Scott McTominay found James, and he stepped inside to curl home a lovely first goal, the youngster’s third in his first four games.  

But United did not build on that goal as Saints floundered, goalkeeper Angus Gunn twice denying James, Wan-Bissaka blazing over and Marcus Rashford missing.  

After the break, Saints improved, as Che Adams wasted a glorious chance, and then Danny Ings saw his glancing header well saved by David De Gea.

But United once again, as has happened too often this season, failed to clear their lines, and Jannik Vestergaard headed Saints level with a goal that will have annoyed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The sending off of Danso galvanised United again, but once more Gunn proved defiant, stopping James, Rashford and Mason Greenwood with some good saves.

There was plenty of pressure, and the ball fizzed across the Saints area plenty of times – but not enough of an end product.

In Wales starlet James, United look like they might have uncovered a little gem, with his sharp shooting and blistering pace. What they need now is a man to tuck away the chances. An arrogant man.

Southampton 1-1 Man Utd: Jannik Vestergaard header earns 10-man Saints a point

Jannik Vestergaard headed home Kevin Danso’s cross to cancel out Daniel James’ first-half opener at St Mary’s

Jannik Vestergaard’s towering header gave 10-man Southampton a point after another moment of magic from Manchester United new boy Daniel James looked to have put them on course for victory at St Mary’s.

James scored his third Premier League goal in four appearances with a fierce, rising right-foot drive after only 10 minutes, and the 21-year-old Wales attacker was the biggest threat for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Saints, however, gained momentum in the second half as a disappointing United side grew increasingly sloppy, and Vestergaard capped a spell of pressure with the equaliser just before the hour.

Che Adams had blazed wide of an open goal and David de Gea had saved superbly from Danny Ings before the giant figure of Vestergaard rose to meet Kevin Danso’s fine cross.

It proved the high point of Danso’s afternoon as he was then sent off for a crude lunge at Scott McTominay when he was already on a yellow card, leaving referee Mike Dean with an easy decision.

United, predictably, laid siege to Southampton’s goal in the closing stages but were kept out as keeper Angus Gunn saved superbly from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, while both Jesse Lingaard and Ashley Young were just off target.

It leaves the Old Trafford side with only one win from four league games, the opening-day win against Chelsea being followed by draws here and at Wolves and that home defeat by Crystal Palace.

United lack quality & killer touch

Solskjaer bemoans Man Utd’s poor finishing

Few tears were shed when Manchester United said their farewells to expensive attacking failures Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, departed for Inter Milan permanently and on loan respectively.

It was ironic, then, that a lack of killer touch by those left behind saw United leave St Mary’s with just a point after taking charge of most of the first half and mounting an assault on Southampton’s goal following Danso’s dismissal.

James mixed the dangerous and the erratic after his brilliant goal but looks a real talent, with pace to burn and end product – the same could not be said for the disappointing Rashford.

Solskjaer will rightly point to the late heroics of Gunn and several other near misses but their chance of victory suffered its biggest blow when they lost any semblance of control early in the second half and allowed the hosts, always determined under Ralph Hasenhuttl, back into the game, culminating in Vestergaard’s header.

Juan Mata had little influence, while Paul Pogba produced the sort of display that frustrates so many, conceding possession countless times and his efforts paling in comparison to those of the likes of James and McTominay.

United’s recent record is dismal, reading just two wins in their past 13 games and with no away victories since Paris St-Germain were beaten in the Champions League in March.

There is plenty for Solskjaer to ponder – and work on.

Hasenhuttl joy as Saints show fight

Hasenhuttl praises ‘unbelievable performance’ after draw with Man Utd

Saints boss Hasenhuttl’s reaction at the final whistle showed exactly what this point meant to him and his side.

The Austrian punched the air in delight, hugged counterpart Solskjaer then delivered a few more clenched-fist salutes before making his way around the pitch taking the adulation of the home fans.

It may only have been a draw but his delight was understandable. Hasenhuttl must have feared the worst when Danso’s reckless lunge at McTominay left his side at a numerical disadvantage and at United’s mercy.

Goalkeeper Gunn played his part, while bravery and last-ditch defending answered other emergency calls. It was exactly what Southampton’s manager and supporters wanted to see.

It also means Saints can look back at a good week, with a win away at Brighton, victory at Fulham in the Carabao Cup and a creditable draw here after opening with defeats at Burnley and at home to Liverpool.

United’s winless away run goes on – the stats

Southampton are winless in nine home Premier League matches against Manchester United (D4 L5), although this is the first time they have avoided defeat in consecutive home games against them since January 1998.

In the past three Premier League games between Southampton and Man Utd, the team scoring first has failed to win each time (D2 L1).

Manchester United have collected five points in their opening four Premier League games this season (W1 D2 L1), last picking up fewer in their first four games of a Premier League campaign in 1992-93 (four points).

Manchester United are winless in eight away matches in all competitions (D3 L5), their worst run since going nine without a win between April and November 2014.

James has scored three goals in his first four Premier League matches for United – as many as he scored in his final 22 Championship appearances for Swansea.

Vestergaard scored his first Premier League goal for Southampton in his 27th league appearance for the club, becoming the third Danish player to score for the Saints in the Premier League, after Ronnie Ekelund and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Southampton defender Danso is the first player to get an assist and be sent off in a Premier League game since Paul Pogba in December 2017 for United against Arsenal.

Before Danso, the last player to be sent off in their first home Premier League appearance was Yannick Sagbo for Hull City in August 2013.

‘Daniel James is fantastic’ – what they said

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BT Sport: “We showed good mentality today after the red card. It was not easy. But with all the hard work, a man less and a third game in a week it is an unbelievable performance mentality from my team. I can only raise my hat to them. It was fantastic today.

“In the first half we showed a really intense performance. There was one action where we went 1-0 down. The players believe in what we are trying to do and showed they are always trying to be positive. That was the key to the success today.”

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to BBC Sport: “We need some scrappy goals as well. We should have won today – we had the game where we wanted it [but] we were careless in our finishing and our last pass.

“We built pressure, we got round them, created good openings but the clinical edge wasn’t there. We should have won, again.

“Daniel James is fantastic – he has a great attitude, he wants to learn, he is hungry. He is at the start of his career but with his habits he will have a good one. We want to help him become the finished article.”

What’s next?

Southampton travel to Sheffield United in their first game after the international break on Saturday 14 September (15:00 BST), while United welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford at the same time.

Liverpool concluded their preparations for the new season with a victory over Italian side Torino at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were too clever, quick and powerful for their opponents throughout the game, despite making numerous changes at the break and further substitutions throughout the second half.

Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum were on target in the first half for a strong-starting Reds XI that featured three summer signings – goalkeeper Alisson and midfielders Naby Keita and Fabinho, the latter of whom missed the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot after Sadio Mane had been fouled in the box.

The visitors rarely threatened but pulled a goal back through Andrea Belotti’s powerful close-range header.

With West Ham visiting Anfield for the Premier League opener on Sunday, Klopp withdrew most of his first string, giving run-outs to the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana, Danny Ings and Marko Grujic, along with another off-season recruit, Xherdan Shaqiri.

It was Sturridge who rounded off the scoring, steering in a header from Shaqiri’s neat chipped cross late in the match.

Despite the restricted game-time for most, there was enough quality to demonstrate Liverpool’s readiness for the coming campaign.

Firmino’s deflected opener from inside the box came from the eagerness and awareness of Mohamed Salah, who harried and picked up the loose ball before supplying a neat pass to his fellow forward.

The second goal was better, with Wijnaldum driving into the box and receiving Firmino’s pinpoint pass in his stride before stroking in a low shot.

And while Sturridge and Shaqiri may not start Sunday’s game, they have the predatory instinct and creative ability to make a significant impact from the bench if required.

There was also another promising display from 21-year-old Nathaniel Phillips, who played almost the full 90 minutes at centre-back, and a nice moment midway through the second half when Loris Karius, whose errors contributed to Liverpool’s defeat in last season’s Champions League final, replaced Alisson to huge cheers from the home crowd.
