I'm curious about that too! Personally I like the worldbuilding that comes with magical humans being (at least a little bit) not human. It implies that the magic is inherent to their physiology somehow. If someone like Zach had their magic removed- not repressed or made dormant but fully removed- would they even survive that process? Would it be like trying to take someone's blood? How much can you separate magical ability from the body of someone who was born with it? Is it even something separate from the body at all?
At the same time, people like Zach who are able to naturally do things like see ghosts and summon fire being fully human in every way is also very interesting. Because that implies that magic is involved in the biosphere of the material plane. It's not an extraplanar force that sometimes interrupts the barriers between worlds, it's as natural as light or water. Some people are born with sharp eyesight, some have a natural dexterity, some have keen hearing, and some happen to see ghosts. Just one of those random things that may or may not happen depending on a million different factors.
I'm just rambling at this point, but GOD I love magic systems!!!
Mr. (derogatory) The Custodian what do you *mean* the LADZ are "not all human men"? Is Zachery *not* just your run-of-the-mill human man with magical powers? (For real assumed he was just a human dude who had magic powers for whatever reason, as one does in urban fantasy settings). (Also big L on The Custodian for being all (paraphrase) "I would surely know if one of you wasn't human!" and then not long after seeing Zachery's magic meltdown and being. Apparently proven wrong. Cringe and fail old man!!!)
#dandies in danger#dandiesindanger#DinD#i love asking questions that dont actually have answers that matter but theyre fun to think about#also Mr. Custodian (derogatory) made me laugh so hard

July 7th is the birthday of our dear, tortured poet/doctor, Adrian Edwards! 🍷
◇ Despite his usually gloomy outlook, Adrian has a secret fondness for slapstick and "low comedy". When a comedic performer is truly skilled at their craft, Adrian considers it just as impressive as a ballet. Liam is the only one who knows this little secret.
◇ He has a big sweet tooth and often stole treats from his younger brother as a child. James still brings this up in arguments.
◇ He grew up with a Clumber Spaniel named Poppy: a very mild-mannered dog who let baby Adrian use her as a pillow.

Please tell me about Dandies & Danger, I'm loving that title!
(sorry for the late response, I didn't notice the ask :/)
They are on tumblr: @dandiesindanger
They do homebrew dnd-based adventures taking place in regency era paranormal london:) They are all very queer (both characters and players) and neurodivergent (also both), which makes it so enjoyable for me. All of it is also so well put together, the current running campaign is a mystery-solving one and I am SO invested i just listened to all the episodes again :)
Highly reccomend, also bc there is not thAt much content yet (compared to critical role or dungeons and daddies and such), which is always a bit overwhelming for me

Hello! It's been a hot minute since I posted 😳 Thanks for sticking around!
(Clockwise from the top) Zachery, Daniel, Adrian, & Liam are the blundering protagonists of the roleplay podcast Dandies in Danger. If you enjoy queer, Regency shenanigans, you can find us on:
•YouTube
•Podomatic
•Google Podcast
•Apple Podcast
😎 We're partway through Arc 2!
This is the linework for the full-color piece that I posted over on the @dandiesindanger account. If you haven't seen it already, I included many more close-ups in that version. ^^
One thing that I didn't share in the finished version is the AMAZING REFERENCE PHOTO/INSPIRATION. Some of you classic horror fans might recognize Peter Lorre, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Basil Rathbone. Their dynamic in this photo was too good to pass up! (°♡∀♡)

It's important to me that you all know that in my computer this is labeled as "divorce.png"
Tested out some different stylization with this one! I especially wanted to do a little studying on how Sage Cotugno does their lighting in TGS, so it's basically that but a little different. Some rambling about art and divorcees under the cut.
These two are so fucking funny to me, because their type of divorce vibe is SOOOOO specific. They feel like two divorced dads working out a custody calendar with their almost adult children. While they're arguing (meaning Fergus is arguing and Carrion is calmly messing with him for entertainment) Zach and Liam go "eh, I've been living with him longer anyways" and stay at their respective houses and Adrian and Daniel play rock paper scissors in the background to see who gets first dibs.
By god this took so motherfucking long. I'm still not entirely happy with it. That inconsistent light source is really frustrating, I had a clear idea of it in my head that I just couldn't get on the page properly, but I've also spent so long on this and sometimes you just gotta call it done. I don't really cel shade, so this was good practice at least. I definitely want to get way better at it. Especially because I love comics, and there's no way in hell I will survive if I try to do painterly shading in a comic. I also wanted to try to practice drawing clean images of characters actually interacting with each other physically, something I tend to fudge through the messiness of a sketch.
And for fun, some details:
I put both of their sigils in their respective upper corners. I did my best based on the narration, but this kind of design is not my forte, so hopefully I got it in the ballpark at least. I think they look pretty neat anyways
The background has those curtain outline things- that is intended to be a reference to the Chariot card! Chess has said that Fergus is essentially the Chariot in terms of plot relevance, so I wanted to include a little bit of that imagery. I was gonna try to put in some references to Temperance to represent Carrion (my best guess for what fits him, I don't know tarot beyond basic Google searches) but it was already pretty busy so I scrapped that.

JUST TELL YOUR FRIENDS IN DIRECT TERMS THAT YOU'RE SCARED AND YOU WANT THEM TO BE OK
YOU DONT HAVE TO BE THE SHIELD EVERY TIME!! MY DUDE!! NO ONE WANTS YOU TO DO THAT!!!

There is something so cool about the different horror strengths each DM has in their respective arcs. They're all great, but I think each of them has a specific shining strength that really stands out to me, and shows how versatile horror writing can be.
Cass (Arcs 1 and 4): Imagery
Both Arc 1 and Arc 4 have these moments that have branded themselves into my brain with their sheer visual power. For Arc 1 a few things stand out, but maybe my favorite is the Lads turning to see themselves in a mirror and their reflections having animal skulls for heads. It's such a simple image but with the tension of the surrounding scene it's absolutely perfectly unsettling.
And Arc 4??? Oh my god, the ghost slowly turning towards Zach and Daniel with a green spotlight bursting out from where her face hypothetically is like a human lighthouse- genuinely fucking haunting. So fucking scary. Oh my god. It's so fucking good.
Elijah (Arc 2): Situations
This sounds vague but hear me out- there are scenes in Arc 2 that I think absolutely thrive on the idea of the scene alone. As in, if I were to picture the circumstances without the context of the story, characters, music, ect., I would still find it scary. My very favorite is the scene where the Lads and some of the crew break open a door, rallying together with a shanty. Actual fucking chills dude. Think about it for a second- there are these people who have been trapped in an enclosed space with a ravenous beast by their own friends and comrades. They have been betrayed out of complete and total desperation, and they know that if they don't break out they will die a horrible painful death. And they're too afraid to even properly see the hopelessness of the situation. Even if they save themselves for a few minutes, they will all still die brutally and painfully, and so will everyone else. That's. Fucking. Terrifying. And deeply, deeply tragic. Which, personally, I find to be what makes the most compelling horror stories.
Chess (Arc 3): Characters
Man, do I even need to explain the Manus. He's so fucking scary. God he's so fucking scary. What I find most striking about him is his voice. Soft. Melodic. Most of the time he's hardly above a whisper. He has no need to play at being scary, or threatening, or aggressive. It is pointless to perform as dangerous. Everyone already knows. He simply is. He is exactly as dangerous, ruthless, and cruel as he acts. No pretending necessary. The way that he's played like this slow, stalking predator... He's like a panther, or a tiger. First and foremost, a hunter. I think a big part of what makes him so fucking effective is how he makes Zachary, and by proxy the audience, feel utterly helpless. You can be the most clever rabbit in the warren, but when a cougar comes along you're just meat. The way he dehumanizes Zach is genuinely haunting. It's not just the evil of the system, it's this horrifying psychological attack. He's using the fear that he instills in people to make them hopeless, to make them hate themselves. And that's what he wants. He wants puppets. He wants prizes.
("Prizes" in italics)

Had to do some preliminary sketches of Carrion to get a feel for his design! I took some notes from the narration and tried to get that good slimy vibe that's in the official art.
These were the first three attempts. Carrion is a pretty simple character design-wise, so it didn't take a lot to get him somewhere I liked. By take 2 I was happy, but I still wanted to try some other options.
I tried to push some of the fish-like features, but not so hard that you lose the uncanny effect. It's actually a really difficult balance to keep, that was probably my biggest struggle with this guy. I also took some inspiration from the citizens of Innsmouth, which the description reminded me of. Bulbous eyes a little too far apart, tight skin, oily hair with a really far back hairline. Unrelated but that first sketch of the three is when I decided I was basically gonna give him a Morticia Addams wardrobe. It ended up being a lot more ethereal and spectral in the end, kind of sliding and swirling around as it pleases whenever he moves. I might play around with those Morticia style glove/sleeve things though, that could be really fun.
And I have a couple Fergus sketches as well! Mostly just working out just how bird-like his face would be. And also how much I would subconsciously make him look like Ebeneezer Scrooge. I also don't know why, but I always picture him with a walking stick/cane. I think it's because I like giving him something to wave around at Carrion. Gives him that "get off my lawn" old man vibe
They note that his clothes are like 30 years out of date, so I referenced an outfit from 1795 here. It was literally the first completed outfit from a museum that I found. He looks... Much shabbier in the final piece lol. He's doing his best.

God, Liam and Zach have some of the best interactions for both drama and comedy.
Zach is trying to stay safe and subtle and there's this odd tension where Zach trusts Liam but is still anxious about the worst case scenario and the whole interaction basically goes:
"I'm a bit... Different. Than most people."
"No shit you're 'different' you can shoot fuckin magic out of your hands, Zachery."
"I mean- yeah, but that's not- nevermind."
Amazing. These lads hold my whole heart.

I just started the @dandiesindanger podcast and this is my contribution to the art collective.
I'm on episode 7 of the first arc, and so far its delightful! Very gay, very petty, and very spooky. I'm excited to see where it goes!
Side note, did you know that Lord Byron's first name was George? Because I didn't. For some reason it's kinda funny to me

I love putting a bitchy little "❤️" at the end of comic dialogue. It's such a simple way to communicate "I love you dearly, but also in a mean way, you excellent little shit"
This is meant to be when Liam and Catherine are teenagers, probably after one of Liam's first London parties. He did great! He doesn't think so though! After he's calmed down from the embarrassment and she's done teasing him I think she would actually reassure him that he did a great job and there's nothing to worry about.
The second drawing is based on my real life experience of being one of the eldest of my cousins and being deeply disturbed when the young ones got taller than me. Extremely rude of them imo
I'm very excited for the day Cathy shows up in the podcast proper. Liam is very much an Eldest Sibling™ with an absolutely ferocious need to protect the people around him. And I'm certain that extends to Cathy as well, but she's pretty much the only person that will regard Liam as one of the babies in the room and act accordingly as a Big Sister. Which, if things keep going the way they're going... Yeah, I think he could really use a big sister in his life. Just from the peek of Catherine through their letters, she seems like the type of person that wants to help but is completely blind to their own biases. She so easily fits into societal standards that it doesn't make sense that anyone would deviate from them. Her advice to Liam tends to boil down to "Just be Normal! :) " without ever stopping to examine
1.) what "normal" is
2.) if he can even fit within those standards
3.) how much work it might take to force himself into what is "normal"
But despite all that, it's clear that she really loves him and wants the best for him, misguided as she might be. I love that she's flawed, it makes for a very interesting dynamic, but I also hope that we get to see them grow closer in the future and that Liam can find safety with her. I've spent objectively too much time thinking about a character that hasn't even shown up in the story yet lmao
