As I sit here staring at a blank screen, the cursor staring impassively back at me, I find it difficult to gather my thoughts and put them into coherent words. Looking back over the years stretching out behind me, it all seems so incredible—so insane—that there's no way any of it could have actually happened. Except it did. I should know, I lived it.

Who am I? Well, I'm kind of hoping you already know, because chances are if you're reading this, then my family and I are dead. That's fine, it's long overdue, I just hope I got this into the hands of someone that can use it. Or at least be entertained by it.

It's likely you're a Hunter, in which case the name above should be familiar to you. If not, then I really have to wonder how you got your hands on this thing. Maybe just put it down now and back away slowly. Nothing contained herein will make any sense to you and you'll probably just conclude that I'm delusional. Hell, maybe I am.

If, however, you are a Hunter and you still don't know the name 'Winchester', then I just have to wonder what rock you've been living under because seriously dude, we're kind of legendary. Or maybe infamous would be a better word? I don't say that in a bragging way (mostly), it's just a fact, and not one that's always been easy to live with. We weren't always 'legends'. No one starts out that way, and certainly no one in their right mind would seek it out, not if they knew the price. And there is always a price.

I suppose that brings me around to why I'm writing this in the first place. I guess I just want those of you that come after us to know the price you could be asked to pay, and maybe hopefully you'll learn from our mistakes. God knows we made enough of them. And I have to give credit where credit is due, it wasn't exactly my idea to keep a journal. Someone very important to me kept one once and we learned a lot from it, though perhaps maybe not as much as we should have. If you want my honest opinion, I say get out now while you still can. This is not a glamorous job, there are few benefits, and if you're really lucky, you'll die before you watch everyone and everything you love burned to ashes in front of you.

That being said, the stories in this journal are as accurate as I can make them, but I freely admit that a lot of it is also educated guess and artistic license. With that in mind, this is bound to be skewed toward my point of view, and Sam and Dean's to a lesser degree, because, well, I'm the one writing it.

Before we go any further, please be aware that these pages contain inappropriate language, violence, alcohol and drug use, as well as adult themes and situations and basically just a whole host of unpleasant and uncomfortable things.

I mean it, this shit gets  dark, and if you're not comfortable with that then this really isn't for you. Might I suggest something by Lewis Carrol or maybe Stephen King? He can be downright cheerful in comparison. No? Still here? Well, don't say I didn't warn you...

I guess I should start at the beginning. My name is Skyler Summer Winchester, though my maiden name was Bleu. Yes, my name was Skye Bleu. Get over it, I've had to. Now, where exactly is the beginning of our story? It's not the day I was born, of that I'm certain. Oddly, I can't even say it was the day I met Dean Matthew Winchester and my life, my entire world, flipped upside down and changed forever. Really, I guess the beginning would be the day I met Sammy, Dean's younger brother, and the three of us hopped in the car and took a little road-trip to Jericho, California...

The Ties That Bind is a Supernatural series rewrite by TinkerbellBleu that can be found on FFNet and Ao3. With an OC that brings her own issues and story arcs, it adds new dimensions to an old favorite.
