Spotlight on Studio Partner: Are You Willing To Sacrifice For Your Dreams? #2 : Zena Xing, Founder/Director of Merzly Oriental Dance Singapore (Part 10 of 10)
Tumblr media
As for her other students, she is preparing them to progress their next level of skills always by providing them ample opportunities to showcase the fruits of their learning in recitals and invitational performances whenever possible.
I enjoyed chatting with Zena as she  embodies the spirit of building others up which is aligned with the mission of danceBOOK+ .
I love it when she simply wants to share her love for this art form and to celebrate the bond and sisterhood created.
Importantly, I see how she exemplify through her journey of Merzly Oriental Dance that if we put our heart to learning something, we would be able to achieve our dream.
She started as a total beginner with no background in dance and look at her now.  Now, this gives me hope 😝
Watch out for stories about other dancers too & I will be covering another series about Zena again one day

Spotlight on Studio Partner: Are You Willing To Sacrifice For Your Dreams? #2 : Zena Xing, Founder/Director of Merzly Oriental Dance Singapore (Part 1 of 10)
Tumblr media
All the odds are against choosing dance as a career.
As a dancer, you asked to be extremely adaptable to the choreography without ownership over any dance. And dancers are sometimes barely ever paid, constantly traumatized by bad working conditions and trained for years without any promise of returns.
Obviously we love to  dance. It feels good. There are so many reasons to do it, and we're still doing it, still believing in it. So what's the drive to do something that's obviously not in your best interest and even taking it to the extreme, pursuing it as a career?
This series is dedicated to the attempt to comprehend why these dreamers can give up the conventional path of career to pursue dance.

Tumblr media
As a matter of fact, she started this dance studio only because she wanted continual learning for her group of students who otherwise would be left stranded as she had left her position as an instructor in the previous school.
She could not bear leaving her students, such is her heart for the love of imparting and sharing her skills.
Hence, her mission for her school is to encourage growth among her students by offering a mutually supportive environment which emphasize collaboration and exploring for improving their technical and performance skills

Spotlight on Studio Partner: Are You Willing To Sacrifice For Your Dreams? #2 : Zena Xing, Founder/Director of Merzly Oriental Dance Singapore (Part 5 of 10)
Tumblr media
As I talked more to her, I realized she is really what she meant, about sharing her passion for dance.
"I love to dance and wanted to share my love for this art form" said the bubbly Zena, who had won many awards in dance competitions held in Singapore and Malaysia such as  the Asia Global Bellydance Professional Solo Championships in 2015, the Malaysia Oriental Expression Oriental Queen 1st Runner Up in 2015, the Belly Dance Asia Professional Solo 1st Runner up in 2014 and the Asia Global Bellydance Professional Troupe and Solo 1st Runner Up in 2014
Zena started the Merzly Dance Troupe in 2013 with its founding members— Mandy, and other fellow dance students who were attending the Nile Group Festival in China.

Spotlight on Studio Partner: Are You Willing To Sacrifice For Your Dreams? #2 : Zena Xing, Founder/Director of Merzly Oriental Dance Singapore (Part 4 of 10)
Tumblr media
" I fell in love with bellydance right away as dance is a good stress reliever.  When I dance, I forgot myself and live in the moment only" and I nodded in agreement as this is exactly how I felt too when I danced.
She enjoyed her bellyfit classes in Desert Roses for about a year before she felt that she had to deepen her knowledge in bellydance.
She made the bold decision to go for a 6 months full-time intensive bellydance professional training programme with AFOD - Angella Format Oriental Dance (training programme),  (北京安琪拉东方舞) in Beijing in which she practically spent all of her waking hours in the school moving from one level of training to the next.
She was introduced to Korean Shimmy Queen Angella Kim by her colleague who knew of her passion for bellydance.
She recalled pensively," That was a total torture.
I did not know how I got through all those intensive training and immerse pressure to master all the skills taught within a short period of time. Sometimes I would cry out of sheer pain and stress"
Her passion to master the craft of bellydance helped her endure the hardship and she completed the course and came back to Singapore to Desert Roses as a instructor to share her knowledge.

She asked me instead," Why did you dance?"
A short pause ensued before she smiled and answered her own question, "When  I first came to Singapore 10 years ago, I was looking for a healthy recreational activity to widen my social circle and get fit.
There was an option of a bellydance school, Desert Roses, in Singapore which provided dance instructions in Mandarin in which I  chose immediately since I was still struggling with English."
I must intercept here, Zena can now converse confidently in English pretty well now, in fact, I had been sharing with her all about dancebOOK+'s story and mission in English only as I did not  even know how to say " our dance community" in Mandarin correctly😝

Spotlight on Studio Partner: Are You Willing To Sacrifice For Your Dreams? #2 : Zena Xing, Founder/Director of Merzly Oriental Dance Singapore (Part 2 of 10)
Tumblr media
It's very beautiful and inspiring to hear why these dancers are so insistent on dancing, even when it's putting them in extremely precarious and economically desperate positions.
Was it something in their genes, or was it something to do with the way their brain is wired from too much dancing?
This series is a special space for shining the spotlight on our dreamers who are our everyday heroes, who took a great leap of faith to chase their dreams, who otherwise would not be known unless they are some super dancing stars.
With my curiosity piqued, I was looking forward to interview these dreamers, analyse, connect the dots and get some answers to as to why they could make such a huge leap of faith.
So I popped the first question to Zena Xing, a modern Egyptian-style dancer and founder of Merzly Oriental Dance Singapore: “So why do you choose dance?”
