Backstory: Unlike the other three Ghostbusters, Winston Zeddemore was not originally a university professor. Winston applied for a job opening late in 1984 after business started to pick up. Janine Melnitz interviewed Winston from her desk. She asked him if he believed in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full trans-mediums, the Loch Ness monster and the theory of Atlantis. Winston replied if there was a steady paycheque in it, he would believe anything she said. The interview was interrupted when the phone rang and by the return of the weary Peter Venkman and Raymond Stantz. Winston turned his head and observed them while Janine spoke to the caller. Raymond was not pleased to see two free repeaters on the evening worksheet. He walked to the basement Janine brought Winston to their attention. She introduced him. Winston stood. Raymond stopped and turned around. Raymond took one look at him and hired him on the spot.

Book of the month: Black Tides of Heaven by JY Yang: didn't finish it. I grabbed it because I heard the world building was super interesting, both on its face, and also from a craft perspective. (because it's a novella, i heard that it was impressive it fit such good worldbuilding in such a small wordcount.) and the worldbuilding was fine, but i didn't click with the plot. so that's that.

Other book of the month: On Teaching Children by Philip Done. I loved this one, and also didn't finish it. But I will finish it!

Hamilton by Chernow: finished it! This was my second try. I made it a lot farther in this one than I expected. It's pretty good, but I am grateful that I borrowed the audiobook from the library. I doubt I would have finished it otherwise.

The Real Macaw, Donna Andrews. I LOVED this book. It's a cozy mystery. I was hoping for a lot of bird stuff, but there was only minimal bird stuff. BUT this book had some great, great stuff. 1) There are bits with dogs (and cats) and they read exactly like "oh yes this author has experience with cats and dogs." 2) There is a scene with a bunch of 5-year-olds playing T-ball that SENT ME. I was laughing so hard because it was so true to both child-behavior and parent-behavior. 3) The protagonist does a reasonable job of trying not to stick her nose into the mystery and call in the cops when appropriate, but still ends up in the thick of things. Loved this one.

A Wrench in the Works, Kate Carlisle. This was another cozy. The protagonist is a handyman(lady), and her sister comes into town to film an HGTV show with her. And there's a mysteryyyy~~~ This one was a lot of fun. I liked the interactions between the sisters. It was interesting because the first body doesn't drop until about halfway through, but I wasn't impatient for the murder to start because I was enjoying the sister-sister reunion.

Reread: Monstrous Regiment, Pratchett. This book is still fantastic. I felt so many things. I LOVE the reveal with Wazzer's place in the story vs what Polly expected.

The Island of Doctor Moreau, HG Wells. I read this in anticipation of reading The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, but then I ended up not finishing that one. Whoops.

The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal: This one was SO GOOD!!! SO GOOD! I recommend it. (it's a whodunnit set on a luxury cruise IN SPACE. the protagonist is really well-developed, she feels like a living-breathing person. the setting is great. the ratcheting up in tension is amazingly done)

The Thursday Murder Club, Richard Osman. This one was okay. There were some good, poignant character moments, and there were some good, funny lines, but overall it was just okay. Many of the characters felt like caricatures, and the plot could have been developed and organized better. I wouldn't recommend it.

ANOTHER GREAT BOOK: How to Draw Birds by John Muir Laws. This is a nonfiction drawing book about drawing birds! It's really great. There are lots of illustrations and examples. There's also great notes about bird anatomy & behavior & bird ID. STRONGLY recommend!

Prone to being absorbed in her work. Normal mode is serious, Independent in her work. Resourceful. Committed to her field. Smart as hell. Patient but anxious. Will complain out loud. Takes responsibility but tends to place blame on herself for mistakes. Materialistic about her books. Friends bring out the best in her. Calm temperament for the most part. History

Dana would read books at her school’s library that were all about monsters and scary stories. Her hobby was primarily reading and exploring the woods behind her childhood home. Halloween was always her favorite holiday, and she loved dressing up as monsters from late 70s, early 80s horror movies. Amassed a collection of VHSs and DVDs. As such she loved all things creepy and weird.

As she grew older, she learned more and more about the real monsters of the world through any and all mentions of the BPRD. She made it her goal to join. Dana was mostly interested in Urban Legends, and the truth behind them.

In college, she researched mythological creatures in her spare time, connecting them to urban legends. She majored in Anthropology(Bachelor's) and graduated in 1993(a year typically after people grad?). Dana enlisted in the Army Reserves in order to afford college but her tour was mostly uneventful.

In early 1996 in her off-tour time Dana pursued her Cryptozoology goals and researched in her spare time. Had connections in Europe she tried to contact for leads on a job. Not much luck. Kept job hunting around. Finally found something in Portland, Maine the following year. During this time in her personal life, she had a falling out with her mom. She stayed close to her dad. He supported her through the job hunt.

In her research, Dana stumbled upon multiple sightings of the Loch Ness Monster of Scotland in June 1996, and made her way there a few months later. A staff member of the The Craigdarroch Inn claimed to have seen a creature zig-zag across the water. There she met Frank Burke, a fisherman who claimed to have been after Nessie for weeks. She investigated his report, and accompanied the man on a fishing trip. Burke reeled in a “whopper” which was, indeed, a small Nessie. Dana covered the story and discovery in her first official Cryptozoology study paper.

Dana gained quite a bit of notice with her paper on the Loch Ness Monster discovery. She hoped with this under her belt, she would be able to get into the BPRD like she dreamed about. She submitted the paper to various research institutes and journals, and was published a few times. But it wasn’t quite getting her to the Bureau. A few years later in mid 1999, Dana tracked down Woodrow Farrier, now in his sixties, a retired Cryptozoologist who worked for the Bureau in the 1950s. She asked him for a recommendation based on her findings. Farrier was far impressed with them, and saw what he could do for her. Farrier reached out to the BPRD and Kate Corrigan took notice. A few months later, Dana was brought in to be a consultant on a new mission.

Current Events (1999)

First time working at the BPRD, Dana was a Consultant for a Dog-man related massacre in Duluth, MN. It was this mission she first met and worked with Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman. Dana was assigned to accompany the team to Duluth, MN, but was ordered to stay out of the action on her first day. She provided insight into what creature may have committed the horrors. Her findings were accurate, as the team was attacked by a group of Dog-men. No casualties were suffered on the team, which reflected well on Dana’s performance. Hellboy and Abe Sapien enjoyed having her on the team and looked forward to the possibility of working with her again.

Manning satisfied with the reports and results of the mission, as a specimen was brought back, relayed his approval to the new Assistant Director of Field Operations, Kate, on her choice to hire Carlisle. Dana was officially employed by the BPRD in November of 1999. At first Dana was tasked with organizing paperwork of un-filed documents covering various encounters of monsters. At the request of Hellboy, Kate and Manning assigned Dana on more field missions throughout the following year.
