10 years of Bonkai. It’s so bittersweet how 6x16 was the episode that made the Bonkai tags explode. Like there was such a long ass wait for them to reunite. It had been months that Bonkai fans were waiting, theorizing, in our little corner of the tvd fandom.

People felt pretty good when 6x13 aired and Kai saved Bonnie and nearly died doing so. But then 6x16 had us all shook. It’s interesting, cause nothing romantic even happened. Bonnie hates him at this point. But seeing Kai so obsessed with Bonnie and determined to show his regret and guilt (something no character on this show ever did. Klaus and Damon usually have the narrative apologizing for them. But the actual characters themselves are never shown actually taking accountability and feeling guilt like Kai did. Anyway…) Bonkai episodes especially 6x16-6x17 are such bittersweet episodes. Kai wasn’t just feeling sorry, he also had feelings for Bonnie. And Bonnie was rightfully angry. But with good consistent writing this could’ve developed into such an interesting dynamic. Even if the writers left us with blue balls and never made them a couple we could’ve still saw more Bonkai on our screen that was consistent with what they were showing in 6x16-6x17.

10 years later it still stings. But im glad the bonkai fandom produced so many great fics. Thefudge had a fic (i wish i remembered the name) that was an au to 6x22. It was so emotional. Proof that even with that stupid sleeping beauty plot the writers still could’ve had the grace to give Bonkai a better send off.

Was you a fan of kai in season 8? I know alot of people myself included wasn't a fan loved the little bonkai bit we got at the end still was disappointed they waited until the very end to have them reunite and don't even get me started on kai hyping up katherine

here's the thing anon i suffered through s7 holding on by the single fraying thread that was bonnie bennett. then enzo died in such a stupid, ridiculous, heartbreaking way. and THEN kai showed up steaming in the grill and for the briefest of moments i thought to myself: are they about to give us an ambiguous bonkai ending ?? there's no way we can be so blessed ?? and i was unfortunately correct 💀

so seeing kai in s8 at all was like a reward for my suffering. i love that he shows up in the wedding suit (as if that's not wildly traumatic for all of us) i love that he begs to see bonnie every chance he gets, so even if we have to wait until the very end it's confirmation on his end that he's thinking of her/wants to see her. the heart on the window moment ????????? come on.

so yeah im always a fan of kai, but to me we lose him in 6x17. the kai that comes back from 1903 is inherently different and while we get little flashes of good writing here and there, its just never the same. my favorite moments in s8 from his episodes are when he's in the grill, at the bar singing, in the armory cell/chasing the twins through the house, and at the end with bonnie. to me that's when he feels most like himself. if he's centered on a personal/gemini storyline i'm immediately like 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

the scenes with damon fall flat for me because they write kai as relying on damon for help, and i just feel like he would go to literally anyone else ??? like are we supposed to pretend he's not mad damon killed him ??? in what world does kai "revenge is my middle name" parker not try to kill his own murderer on sight ??? so the moment he flips on damon and steals elena's coffin im like thank GOD, there's my boy.

pls the katherine stuff is so fucking funny. the fact that the option to have Kai kill cade and take over as king of hell was RIGHT THERE and they still went with katherine is just 😂 typical 😂 imo kai is only ever interested romantically in bonnie, so i take anything he says about katherine as excitement that she can scare/mess with the mfg. i do think he's mad at them, and it makes sense he'd be happy there's someone else ready to torment them.

but do i think he actually appreciates how evil she is ?? sure, i guess. 😂 like if that's something he even cares about ??? because if that's the case, wouldn't he have been more interested in damon's crimes in s6, or even stefan/lily being a ripper and the damage they could cause ??

there's this weird push for kai to be Absolutely Unhinged and Insanely Evil and i just don't think he is 🙈 i mean the first thing he did when he bargained his freedom from cade was to get drunk in a karaoke bar 😂 so much could have been avoided if they just !! left him alone !!

1920’s ripper Stefan was something else 🤤 what’s your fave ripper Stefan era?

So my absolute biased answer is S6 Ripper Stefan because he was OBSESSED with Caroline and that's how I like my Stefan, completely obsessed with Caroline. But I am instead going to give you an episode from each Ripper Stefan era because what I love about Ripper Stefan is he revels in all the qualities that Regular Stefan tries to keep hidden, his mean side.

3x03: 1920s Ripper Stefan was A MOMENT! The fact that he had two original vampires obsessed with him because he had such charm and charisma while also being a completely manipulative psychopath was awesome to watch. When he made that guy drink his wife's blood and Klaus looked in awe like "he's the worst person I've ever met, I want to travel the world with him" one of the best flashbacks the show ever did.

6x17: Probably my favorite Ripper Stefan episode because he took to heart what he said in 3x11 to beat the villain you gotta me the better villain. NH!Caro completely outsmarted him and he had no idea she'd be as ruthless as he was in getting him to shut it off to leave her alone and he wanted revenge. The way he used everything he taught her about her bloodlust to get her to lose control was a masterclass in manipulation only Stefan could pull off. The way him seducing Caroline by feeding on that girl to make her give up control paralleling with him teaching her control in the bathroom. Lives rent free in my mind.

8x08: Again this was about teaching Damon a lesson, he was pissed Damon tricked him into making that deal with Cade (he said it twice) and thinking this would be easy for Damon. He was also mad Damon had something that was triggering his humanity. The way he used Dr. Elena in his diabolical plan because he loves nothing more than messing with people, hell that was the first thing he taught NH!Caro to do after she let go, fuck with people. He kept giving people morality tests and it was a joy to watch, I love when the show embraces the fact that deep down Stefan is the more evil brother. When his humanity is on he fights against it but when it's not he is one of the best villains on the show.

Delena have angry sex 4x07, 4x08, almost 4x17, 5x02, 5x16, 6x13 cause they are mad at each other, opposite to steroline's sex who is sex grief because they cannot fix. Stefan cannot fix his lost for Damon to Elena 4x23, 5x21 or to death 5x22, 7x22, 8x14, 8x16, and Caroline cannot fix Liz's death in S6 so they have grief sex for what they cannot fix 6x17, 7x01, 7x05, 8x01.

I wouldn't call it angry sex, more like rigorous. 4x7 is Elena's pent-up sex. The problem isn't that she had sex with Damon after her and Stefan just broke up. The problem is that she didn't break up with Stefan when she should've. She's been in love with Damon since her birthday, but waited more than a season to have sex with him, and waited out of respect for Stefan. Fans simply have it backwards because of their bias. I'm pretty sure 4x8 was the final moment of an all-nighter for Delena.

I would change very little with pre-6x17 Bonkai, for the most part I’m happy with what we got. With a few exceptions.

1. Kai 10000% should’ve called Bonnie, beautiful, gorgeous, hot, sexy at some point in the prison world and/or when he got out and was talking about her to other characters.

2. I wish we got more alone time with Kai and Bonnie in 1994. And Bonnie discovering more about the Gemini Coven and Sheila’s relationship with them.

3. I’m on the fence about Bonnie sacrificing her magic to keep Kai in prison while letting out another mass murderer Damon (and later on in the series being ok with Lily and her gang getting out). So at times I wanna change that part and wish they left together. Like maybe Bonnie kills Kai and hopes she has enough time to escape before he resurrects but last minute Kai hops on. But if her sacrificing her magic would remain in the plot then I wish this would’ve been used as something she has to confront later on with herself.

1. Kai not complimenting Bonnie was just pettiness on Julie’s part because he was flirting aggressively (to the point Damon even clocked it), it’s ridiculous that he never paid her a blatant compliment or commented on her looks.

2. Definitely agree that they should have spent more time. It would have contributed to the immense - arguably disproportionate anger Bonnie felt towards Kai when she realized the truth. Making her feelings go deeper than a momentary attraction that never moved past skepticism would have explained why she took his deception so personally. I won’t have minded that they didn’t go deep into their shared family history if that was something they were keeping for later. But it’s annoying that no one ever acknowledges that Sheila/the Bennetts were responsible for a very important Gemini spell.

3. That’s another thing I won’t have minded if it was building up to something/ developing Bonnie’s character. Like you said, if this was something that she was going to confront later on and deal with her tendencies to sacrifice herself for people who were never worth it. Like the way I put it in the Big Fight between her and Elena in Long Shadows - “it was Elena then Jeremy and now Damon, and Bonnie finding someone to sacrifice herself for was a pattern and the common denominator in this pattern was *Bonnie*. There’s something in her psyche that makes her keep doing this and she needs to fix that thing inside her.

I have heard showrunners conduct tone meetings with directors.So that explains why the first episode or for that matter all other episodes under that wench was like that.I think ep 1 was Pascal.By the way, is the cut SC scene you mentioned available on DVD boxset?

Ha I wish! But really wasn't that bad this time because I know how it all ends, and I thought that gave me a clearer picture of just how much she was sabotaging their scenes. It just became so clear in the binge especially 7x03 and 7x05 like they were really trying to sell SV as this tragic love story and the way their scenes were shot with the lingering and lighting. It was similar to how Stefan would act around Rebekah and Katherine in the flashbacks and even in the present but the difference with that was SE wasn't being sabotaged at every damn turn! 7x03 just felt like a pure directional sabotage not so much the scripts (except for the car thing I mentioned in my recap). Then every time they'd do the "previously on the vampire diaries" I'd see Stefan and Val in what looked too similar to SC in 6x17 by the fireplace for like 5 episodes straight. So I can definitely see that she would have had tone meetings with directors to do that, what's funny is the first director that season who seemed to give emphasis on SC scenes was Paul Wesley!

So when S7 was airing and everyone was freaking out Julie was interacting a lot with SC fans trying to almost calm their nerves. I remember someone asked her about Valerie and she replied "other obstacles get in between them but Stefan loves Caroline" which was the first sign Julie wasn't running the show. Then she said that Stefan and Caroline were going to talk about everything going on (she said something like they have a conversation in episode 8 or 9) and then when those episodes aired and we still didn't get anything she said sorry it must have been cut. This was probably around the time they were shooting 11-13 which is why those episodes felt different already, like 11 and 13 had direct parallels to 2x02 and that's always been the moment for Julie where she saw their potential.

And Dries did the same thing in S5 because she just dragged DE constantly through the villains talking shit and even some of the shots like Damon on the ground while Elena looks so worried at comatose Stefan. But that season she could occupy herself with Katherine who she LOVES but she didn't have that in S7 so everything suffered. Mostly I'm just shocked at how unprofessional she is and I'm sorry you can't say that Julie would have done the same thing because look at S6 and S8 and what she gives SC when she's running the show.

Julie said in an interview that Kevin wrote 1x3 and she referenced the scene where Stefan tells Damon "These are people Damon. They aren't puppets," and I believe in that interviewe she also said he thought it was a good way to juxtapose Damon's humanity surfacing at the end of the episode after he sees Elena sleeping after the events of the episode. Kevin also wrote 1x2, 2x1, 2x13, 2x19, and is responsible for the storylines he had with Caroline and Andie but Julie is overly hated and people accuse her of treating Damon like the golden boy even though it was Kevin and not Julie who said Damon was his favorite to write for and Julie's favorite was Caroline. Also Stefan didn't care what Damon did as long as it wasn't in a town he's trying to start over in, as is pointed in 6x4. I also thought it was weird how in the first half of season 5 before Katherine got into Elena's body Caroline was getting along with her better than she did Damon despite the way Katherine treated Stefan and Elena. Caroline was also trying to date Jesse after compelling him and before she found out he was turned into a vampire, with her specifically talking about wanting a cute guy in her life after breaking up with Tyler and constantly called Jesse without knowing that Wes turned him. I don't think she ever apologized to Matt for compelling him while they were together. She never apologized for trying to kill him in season 6, but people hate Matt because he wasn't comfortable with her being a vampire in season 7. Also before she compelled Liam after she tried to take their make out session outside the bar she slams his face really hard against his glass wall before making out with him. I also thought it was weird how Stefan said compulsion was what he missed most after becoming human when Damon asked him if being less physically healthy and strong was what he found lacking as a human. Stefan says "Nothing more important than free will," to judge people but uses compulsion and is sad to have lost that ability after becoming human. I also thought it was weird how in 6x17 he creepily barges into the room of one of the female students at Whitmore without knocking and touches her chest to turn her around when he could've touched her anywhere else.

I love the end of 1x3 because it shows their direction with Damon's character as it pertains to his relationship with Elena. But that was also the first time I saw him act in response to something someone said. He's often affected by the words of others, and Stefan's words sent him to Elena's room. The necklace was all about Damon seeing his humanity, so it's all introduced in that episode.

You're right about Stefan not caring what Damon did as long as it wasn't in a town he was trying to start over in. Such is the case with his comment to Damon in 1x9 and the reality of his comment being shown through Silas in 5x2.

Damon: I'm on edge. Crash diet. You know, I'm trying to keep a low profile. Stefan: You could always just leave, find a new town to turn into your own personal Gas 'n' Sip.

Literally what Stefan does when he leaves town with Klaus in 2x22... he turns the entire eastern seaboard into his own Gas 'n' Sip.

Caroline is hilarious with Katherine because she loves being a vampire, so it's hard to hate the person that turned her into one. I suppose there's a certain level of love there that wouldn't be had Katherine not turned her. A lot of these characters have hypocritical moments whereas Damon is more honest and less hypocritical
