i would like to hear your thoughts about [redacted]'s italian dubbing, please do enlighten me

i mean, not to encourage avoiding your chores but uhh yes let’s talk about that dubbing

thank you sara for indulging me! i hate the italian adaptation of supernatural with a burning passion!! the italian voices are actually ok but the lines are sooo badly translated t.t i’ll provide some examples:

ok so, generally speaking, swear words tend to be avoided or replaced with “softer” ones: “fuck”, “shit”, “son a bitch” are often replaced by “cavolo” or “diamine” - diamine?? for real??

sexual innuendos tend to be generally disregarded, but especially when regarding religious themes (which lmao good luck trying to avoid meddling with religion in a show like supernatural): “angel condom” (5x01) was translated as “vestitino degli angeli”

there’s also the infamous “i was never in your... [ass]” translated with “non ti stavo appiccicato”(6x19), although i have to admit i personally couldn’t come up with a way to keep the sex joke in italian, so i might let them get away with this one

god’s name in the first seasons was almost never pronounced: every single "oh my god” was translated with expressions like “oh cielo”

“this whistle makes me their god“ (4x13) was translated as “il fischietto mi rende il loro mentore“... i mean, no surprises here as italian television has a history of censoring god’s name when used “in vain“

broken sentences typical of spoken dialogue are rendered in a more prosaic tone which clashes with the characters’ way of expressing themselves: “that was about as fun as getting kicked in the jewels” (2x21) “è stato un dolore intenso e fortissimo” - who even talks like that??

references are completely lost in translation for no reason at all: “you totally should have been jamming ‘eye of the tiger’ right there" (3x16) was rendered as “dico che devi essere completamente impazzito” - did they assume we’re too stupid to know the song? i’m confused

or again: “so, pit stop at mount doom?” was translated as “prossima fermata: viale dell’apocalisse” - do they think we’re too stupid to recognize a lotr reference??

“sam, interrupted“ (5x11) was translated as “il virus della follia“, when “sam, interrotto“ would have been a clear reference enough to the 1999 well known film

and again, titles which reference songs (”sympathy for the devil”, “dark side of the moon”...) could have been left in the original english (but that’s just my opinion)

also i have a minor beef with “jus in bello” (3x12) not being left in the original latin 

“jerk” - “bitch” are recurring catch phrases and as such should always be translated in the same way, but translations tend to change a lot: “idiota” - “imbecille” / “fesso” - “puttana” / “idiota” - “stronzo”...

and finally, my biggets beef against the italian adaptation of supernatural: castiel NEVER being called “cas”. i assume they just thought we were too stupid to realize it’s a nickname, since this happens a lot with other dubbed tv shows as well. however, in this case, it’s relevant how the nickname cancels out the suffix “-iel” (meaning “of god”), showing how castiel no longer belongs to god since he rebelled.

i stopped watching spn in italian around season 7 so i don’t know what kind of atrocities were committed later on. these are just a bunch of examples that came to mind and some other i found in online forums, but back in 2012 i probably could’ve named a lot more 😳
